Around the League: San Jose's Time?
And here we are, Round 3 around the corner, with Round 2 seems to last a century with two Game 7s and the Sharks resting for a week now.
But with Boston Bruins completing the biggest meltdown in playoffs history, it's time to look ahead as hockey writers around the world are turning their focus on the conference finals. I don't know how anyone finds any courage to predict anything anymore. I have not seen a single bracket before playoffs began that had the Sharks facing the Blackhawks in the conference final, let alone the Flyers facing the Canadiens. But they do have to give their predictions and preview the series, so let's take a look at what are they saying about the upcoming Western Conference finals between the top two teams in the West.
Plenty of material about the series is already posted in Chicago's media. Chris Kuc if Chicago Tribune thinks that the key match up in the series is Chicago's defense vs the HTML line.
It's one tough defensive challenge after another for the Blackhawks.
After hand-cuffing the Canucks' top offensive line featuring the talented Sedin brothers - Henrik and Daniel - in the Western Conference semifinals, the Hawks now have to find a way to do the same to the Sharks' No. 1 trio of Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau in the conference finals .
His colleague in the paper Steve Rosenbloom disagrees, as he thinks that Joe Thornton is still a "No-Show Joe." His logic is based solely on the fact that Thornton is -6 in these playoffs. For someone who humbly states in his bio that he "smoked cigars with Michael Jordan, Mike Ditka and Red Auerbach", this is a surprisingly lazy analysis. But after taking multiple stabs at Thornton, he proceeds that actually, yes, the Sharks are still dangerous because of someone else on the team.
Pavelski, though, is the key. He's the guy. He's what Thornton was always supposed to be in April and May and June. The player whom teammates have taken to calling "The Big Pavelski'' has come up big with nine goals in 11 playoff games this spring. His 15 points tie him with Patrick Kane for fourth in playoff scoring among active players, but Pavelski leads the postseason with five power-play goals, is tied for first with three game-winners, and is a plus-7, best among players still chasing Lord Stanley's chalice.
Of course. It's all about plus/minus, isn't it? Someone should send him a video of the Detroit series. Perhaps he was too busy smoking cigars.
Mike Helka, previewing the game for Versus, notes that a lot will be decided in Game 1 of the series.
So quite honestly, anything could happen when the Western Conference final starts Sunday afternoon. But I get the feeling Game 1 will tell us a lot. If the Blackhawks can find a way to win - and possibly win going away - the Sharks very well could have memories of previous meltdowns against Dallas and Anaheim leap into HP Pavilion. If the Sharks can set a pace, they can gain confidence and make that trip to United Center knowing it hasn't been that scary (3-3 for the Hawks) so far in the post-season.
It will be a very interesting struggle for two teams that have not yet been able to succeed in a situation like this.
The Canadian Press takes a comprehensive statistical look at the upcoming series, noting, for example, that no Shark have ever matched up against any of the Blackhawks players in any previous playoffs series, which is remarkable, if you consider the playoffs experience of players on both teams. They are feeling that the time for San Jose has come.
OUTLOOK: Sharks finally swim away from disappointment to reach finals for the first time. San Jose in 6.
The Hockey News has traditionally liked the Sharks, and have picked them to go deep every year since the lockout, including this year. Their faith in the Sharks continues. However, I was surprised that they are giving the defensive edge to the Sharks, while giving an edge in goal to the Blackhawks, because that view is the opposite view we've taken here at Fear the Fin. THN goes on and cites the negative playoff mojo that Brian Campbell and Marian Hossa bring to the table. But either way, they think the Sharks will win in seven.
The two best teams in the West are near mirror images in terms of their offensive pop, defensive sturdiness and puck-possession strategy. But San Jose brings a whole lot of beef to the forward lines and Chicago doesn't exactly have a punishing defense corps to repel them with.
No formal prediction from ESPN yet, but their correspondent Pierre LeBrun is in town covering the game. His first impression of what San Jose is like during playoffs this year is a good one, and by the sound of the rest of the article, his sympathy is with the Sharks.
Let's be honest, many people around the hockey universe are cheering for the script that has Chicago ending a 49-year Cup drought against the 24-time Cup champion Canadiens. But there are also some in the industry who would quietly cheer for a Cup triumph in San Jose. People around the league know how well this franchise has been run, both in hockey operations and the marketing/business side.
On the hockey side, a Cup win would vindicate years of patient roster building. It would compensate a franchise that didn't bottom out in the standings in order to draft its core players. There's something to be said for that.
And there's something to be said for this terrific hockey town in Northern California.
More previous for the series will come out today and tomorrow. As you come accross the new articles, feel free to share them in the comments.

It’s nice to see at least a little love coming San Jose’s way. The boys have been playing pretty awesome this postseason. If they can keep it up, they could open some eyes around the league, as everyone will pretty much be forced to watch us for once…
This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.
How about that
I’m waiting for the “West Coast bias” talks to come up because people will have to stay up almost late to watch some games.

West Coast Bias my ass
We need to explain to the idiots that it is hard for people to attend games when they are at WORK. That means 7PM + start times. Boo hoo, drink a cup of coffee and enjoy some hockey.

exactly – why should we start games at 4:00 here just for the east coast fans, when people have jobs and/or kids to pick up from school, etc. – it’s just another thing for them to whine about.

I don't think the times are really for us in the Central time zone
I’m sure they are doing it to try to get more East coast viewers. I personally would have no problem with a later start. 7:00 for the West is 9:00 for me. I would stay up to watch hockey if it started at 1:00 am.
I went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out.

LeBrun got the duty to do the West preview, and he took Hawks in 7:
Honestly, flip a coin. These are two powerhouses firing on all cylinders right now. We could easily make the argument for either team winning. But since we’re being forced to declare a winner: Toews scores in quadruple overtime at HP Pavilion in Game 7. Hawks in seven.
Hradek and Melrose took the Hawks too (video in that link). That’s probably a good thing, though…

Hawks fan here
Melrose predicted the Bruins to win it all when they were up 3-0 because they were playing the best hockey of anyone left. His prediction for the Hawks does not inspire confidence in me. I agree with the Hawks in 7 flip a coin approach though
the fact that Melrose picked the Hawks
is what has made me MOST nervous as a Hawks fan. Forget the stats or any “logic”, i think his support can be worse than the supposed “Hossa Curse.”

I must admit I haven’t paid attention to Melrose but, by some chance, did he pick the Caps and Pens to beat Montreal?
Then again, Melrose is the same guy who didn’t exactly think Steve Stamkos was ready for NHL hockey. He used to coach the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Note: what happened to Stamkos with a regime change from Melrose to Tocchet. (Tocchet may have been a crook but he’s a least a better judge of talent than Melrose.)

Must admit I did. (But of course I had this little paranoid little voice in the back of my mind picking the Habs to win. Hey, I’m a Caps fan. Of course, I’m paranoid.)
But I didn’t think the Habs would beat Pittsburgh — until it happened. (Pitt was looking suspiciously like the Caps in their losses to Montreal. Same guys were starring against Pittsburgh that starred against the Caps. So I thought there were possibilities.)

5 of 6 on ESPN picked the Hawks. Most of them picked the Hawks in 6…
Barnaby stuck with the Sharks, though, since he picked us to win it all when the postseason began.
As I figured, most of the “national media” really isn’t giving the Sharks a chance. Which is good. They’ve been hating on the team all postseason, and it’s been working really well for the boys. Hopefully they keep that chip on their shoulder and keep proving people wrong.

Oh come on. I’m not going to get into a matter of opinion about who’s team’s XX line is better but the concept that the Hawks are a one line team is simply silly. Using season numbers:
The first line of Heatley, Thornton and Marleau scored 40% of the totals goals on the Sharks. The Sharks scored 154 goals outside of that line.
The current first line of Buf, Toews and Kane scored 27% of the total goals on the Hawks. The Hawks scored 190 goals outside of that line.
I agree too
Patrick Sharp, Kris Versteeg, and last year’s Prize UFA Marian Hossa… all players many teams would covet. Really not a one-line team.
Then again, neither are the Sharks. The 40% HTML stat just goes to show how beastly that combination could be though.

It will be interesting to see which lines matchup in this series. I can make an argument that the Hawks coach would purposely matchup every Hawks line with every Sharks line.
I’m thinking that Ladd will probably matchup with the Thornton line. If the Hawks switch Ladd to the top line, I’m thinking the Hawks will play ones against ones. Even then, I don’t know which line the Hawks coach would prefer to play on the Sharks second line.
BTW, I do think 72 will start against Thornton’s line….

We had three expectant parents and planned a baby shower for them that was supposed to be a surprise but, mirabile dictu, one guy’s wife delivered early (before the shower), and a pregnant female was having early contractions so had to stop work that week. So when we had the shower, only two of the expectant parents could be there.
And Tom Poti of the Caps (the guy who blocked a shot with his eye and nearly lost an eye as a result) is now an expectant dad — any day now.

Actually, Wyhshynski himself has been much kinder to the Sharks this year than usual.

Wyshinksi has gotten better.
The others, however, haven’t.

Follow the money
Sharks are slight favorites to win the series, according to those taking a pecuniary interest.
All else (writers and talking heads, Rosendouche above all) is harmless windbaggery.
Gotta say I’ d rather not have the media bandwagon on the Hawks though.
Gentlemen! I have invented...this thing!
THN fail
Chicago doesn’t have a punishing defensive corps to deal with Team Canada Line? As much as I’d love to believe this, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook have the best defensive pairing in the Western Conference playoffs (I would’ve said NHL, but they haven’t exactly had to shut down Ovechkin/Semin and Crosby/Malkin in back to back series). Brent Sopel is also hugely underrated since he’s put on the 3rd defensive line, but he plays the important quality minutes against top lines when Keith and Seabrook need their minutes managed.
I think that Hjalmarsson is one of our most underrated defensemen
Just call him Hammer if you like – some of us can’t spell/pronounce his name either. I love listening to the announcers butcher it.
I went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out.
- Rodney Dangerfield
more like Jal-mer-son
something about how if it is HJ at the beginning of the name the closest sound in English is to pronounce it like it is a J.

We just need to listen to the radio
I’m sure Dan Rusanowsky has got it down pat. He’s our radio play-by-play guy. Pretty meticulous about getting the pronunciation correct for most players.
Ovvv-yech-kin anybody?
"If you're going to start talking about Joe Thornton then watch the freaking games because the guy has been an absolute dominant player in this series." - Drew Remenda
- Joe Thornton, 2nd Round: 3G, 5A
I used to work with a Hjortsvang, and they pronounced it like Heyort-svang. But then, this is America, where immigrants are given instructions on how to pronounce their names upon arrival.
Maybe it depends upon where you are from in Sweden
I don’t know, but now you can see why we call him Hammer
