News from the Hockey World: New Heroes in Goal, New Future for Backstrom and World Championships

Despite the last night's loss by the Sharks leaving us desperate or even hopeless, the players are moving on, and so shall we. It's the second half of May, and the Sharks are still playing. It's hard to imagine that the second best away team in the league in the regular season can't win two on the road and turn things around. Dan Boyle is pissed and wants to raise the middle finger. We all remember how it ended the last time he felt this way, as the Sharks were two games away from ending the season, and instead went on to win seven of the next eight. We'll write more on that before the series resumes on Friday, but let's take a look at what else is happening in the hockey world this week.

  • The Eastern Conference final between Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens started in a rather surprising fashion. The Flyers 3rd string goalie Michael Leighton who has to play due to injury to Brian Bouche have yet to allow a goal in the series, after two games played. His 58 saves are impressive, but is anyone else surprised that defense led by Chris Pronger is still playing late in May and is two wins away in the next five games from still playing in June?
  • One trend we're seeing once again this spring is how important goaltending have been for teams succeeding in these playoffs. What's surprising is which goalies are making the headlines. Take the four teams still playing hockey - Montreal made the Eastern Conference final due to an unbelievable play from Jaroslav Halak. Philadelphia could not be where they are today without a confident play of Brian Boucher in the backend, and now Michael Leighton. Chicago's situation in goal raised many questions during the regular season, until a rookie Antti Niemi became a starter. None of these goaltenders have been considered elite even two months ago, and yet they carry their clubs behind them. San Jose, of course, had to rely on Nabokov's confident play in the two rounds of playoffs, and with few exceptions, Nabokov have played his best post season hockey since the lockout.

Star-divide

  • The only difference between Nabokov and the other goaltenders is his salary. Halak is making $775k this year. Boucher's salary is $925k and his teammate Leighton is making a wooping $300k. Niemi's salary is $826k. Nabokov's - $5.3M. It's something to think about as we consider the future of San Jose Sharks. What we may be seeing this spring is a change of guard when it comes to goaltenders in this league, as older, more experienced and more expensive goaltenders begin losing their jobs to younger and cheaper goaltenders.
  • Washington Capitals resigned their top center Nicklas Backstrom to a new 10-year deal that averages $6.7M a season. With his future secured with that club, we'll never know how good of a center he is without Alex Ovechkin playing next to him, or what kind of a player Ovechkin is during the season he's not playing next to Backstrom, but either way, I see it a a good deal for both the club and the player. With numbers Backstrom put this season at the age of 22, the sky is still the limit for the young Swedish center. His salary is below that of other similar centers in the league, and Backstrom might have taken a discount from what he could sign for elsewhere.
  • The IIHF World Championships in Germany are entering the knockout stage. At this point, there is only one clear favorite, and it is Team Russia that won every single game so far, and is riding a 25-game winning streak in this tournament, with the last loss dating all the way back to three years ago. None of the other teams can boast the same quality of roster as Russia that includes Ovechkin, Semin, Malkin, Datsyuk, Frolov, Afinogenov, Fedorov, Gonchar and Varlamov.
  • Team USA did not make the quarter final stage, but did avoid relegation to a lower division. With Jack Johnson leading the troops as Team's captain, I can't say I'm surprised.  While the team roster is compromised primarily out of NHL players, they still lack the impact players, as the main heros of Vancouver Olympics Ryan Miller, Chris Drury, Zach Parise and Joe Pavelski all missing the tournament for various reasons. This kind of a turnout is to be expected in the Olympic year.
  • Team Canada did not look that much better, but did make the knockout stage and as a result, will face Russia in the quarter final.  When asked whether the win over Canada will redeem the sins of the recent Winter Olympics, all Russian players responded that the redemption will have to happen in Sochi in four year's time. However, the very fact that all big stars showed up to the tournament when asked shows that they still care about this team, and Russia's coach Bykov in particular. Bykov is still on the hotseat, but will likely be retained should Russia go on and win the World Championship. Judging by the attendance at the tournament, this is how the Russian players want it. For some of them, such as Capitals or Penguins players, or Pavel Datsyuk, the win will also in a way be a somewhat happy finish to an otherwise disappointing season.

THANK YOU

That being said, perhaps we should part ways after this season. I would say to him a sincere thank you and best of luck in your next team.

i liked reading the reactions in the chicago article to JR saying he chose the Sharks over the hawks and the fans who responded calling him a traitor. How is he a traitor? There isn’t anyone left on the active team or coaching staff that he has a connection with, where a good chunk of the coaching staff, the core of the team and the GM he has close relationships here. Shouldnt be a suprise that he is pulling for the guys he was in the trenches with only a year ago. that being said, when he is put into the hall of fame, it will certainly be as a hawk.

I have no problem with JR siding with the Sharks

I think he is a bit divided. He loved being a Hawk and he loved being a Shark. The Hawks screwed themselves by trading him. I think both fanbases love him just the same. He was a Shark more recently and probably feels a bit more of a connection with you guys.

But if you’re ever in Muncy (I know, why would you be) go for Domo, it’s got great Sushi and great Hibachi. My in-laws own it, so I am maybe a bit biased, but it still tastes great. The one place I knew intimately in the Chicago area was in Tinley Park, but they moved and the place shut down.

lol actually, is there any chance of that happening?

Maybe trade Heatley + a 1st rounder? It’d be totally worth it imo.

by Khaaz on May 19, 2010 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Nabby, Marleau, Heatley

He has got to go. Five million for a guy who is just good enough to lose when it really matters isn’t worth anything close to 5 mil. I wish we would have let Nabby go and
kept Boucher. We could have spent that extra money
getting a defensemen who could keep the opponents
from camping out in front of out net.

The Sharks have proven in this series that they have
two weaknesses that will keep them from winning the
cup, one is Nabby and the other is team toughness.

Murray and Clowe are it. The rest of the team is soft
as jelly. I am afraid that the window is closing on this
group of Sharks ever winning a cup.

The young Hawks and other young teams have either
passed us by or have pretty much caught up with us.

We need to do the same, go young.Let Nabby and
Marleau go get younger, faster and stronger.

I would also try to get rid of Heatley and his salary.
He isn’t a championship player and makes too much
money. When the going gets tough, Danny goes in
the other direction.

by The Sear on May 19, 2010 5:03 PM PDT reply actions

Cup

Do you think this team will win the cup this year? Do you think this team can come back and beat the Hawks in this series? They are younger than we are. Their stars are very young compared to our stars.

I want to eventually be able to beat this team and win the cup sometime in the future.

Tell me how we are going to do that with this group of players?

Listen we have had a very nice season and I hope we come
back and win two in Chicago and win the series. I have been watching hockey for almost 50 years and I see the Hawks
being the better team and they will win the series. If not, I will come back and eat serious crow and love doing it.

I want to the Sharks to win the cup one day, and this team seems to lack some essentials to get that done. I hope that I am wrong and this was an overreaction, but I don’t think so.

by The Sear on May 19, 2010 5:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Definitely an overreaction

It just wasn’t a good game. Nabby didn’t play well and our offense didn’t play nearly as well as they are capable of, even though we probably did get the better scoring opportunities once again (according to The Copper & Blue: http://www.coppernblue.com/2010/5/19/1478448/blackhawks-4-sharks-2-game-two#storyjump).

When anything starts going badly for this team the “fans” show up in mass to say how they knew we couldn’t win and we should blow up the team, blah blah blah.

Nothing another fan base can say can hurt us because we have to deal with the idiots within our own fan base so often.

why are you discussing the relative age of each team’s stars? The focus should be on the ongoing WCF. What happens in the offseason in San Jose, who knows, and I really don’t care.

Teams like Detroit have shown you can remain competitive for a very long time with smart drafting, good player development, and smart free agent signings.

Blowing up the team’s roster if they fail to advance to the SCF is the worst possible knee-jerk reaction.

Totally

Chicago’s a great team, and they’re playing great. We got a great team too, but they’re only playing ok, so were losing games. If the Sharks start playing the way we all know they’re capable of, or if Chicago starts playing more like they have throughout the majority of the previous 2 playoff rounds, we should start winning some games; and if both of those things happen we should start dominating games and be done in 6 lol.

by Khaaz on May 19, 2010 6:23 PM PDT up reply actions

In 2 games

I don’t think Nabokov has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’s the problem. I will certainly not deny he has been less than his best. But the only reason we are playing the Blackhawks in the WCF is because Evgeni Nabokov played out of his mind when his team’s strategy was to abandon him in front of his net and hope he cleaned up their mess. His save % against Detroit is in no way a reflection of his play, as our strategy dictated that only a few, high quality shots, would make it to the net. To say, at THIS moment in time, that he needs to go, is to throw the baby out with the bathwater. We plain and simple aren’t at this point in the season if he isn’t on this team.

Chicago is a tough team, but they are fast more than anything. Murray and Clowe are gifted players, but Murray is at the peak of his game, and he has no foot speed to keep up with a fast team like Chicago.

The window for Patty and Joe may be closing, but Pavelski, Setoguchi, Clowe, Vlasic, Couture, McGinn, Mitchell, Ferrerrio and co. will be here for a long time. There is quite a bit of money coming off the books, and the team will be reshaped on the Blue Line in a big way.

Love me some Nabby – I honestly do – but, yes… I think he’s got to go. I’m not going to say it’s his age specifically, but he doesn’t play a consistently good game for us, and he’s sadly not worth a full 5 mil.

I don’t see why we should let Patty go, though. Sure, he doesn’t always give us a good game (he stops and looks confused occasionally), but 10 pts in the playoffs to date and 83 pts in the reg season isn’t exactly something I want us to lose.

Murray and Clowe are it. The rest of the team is soft
as jelly.

Okay, I see the jelly, but Nichol’s awesome (and often “forgotten” by the fans) – and he’s probably got more grit and spunk in that little body of his than virtually every guy on our team. (I don’t know, I just have this soft spot for li’l guys with a lot of spunk. Kinda’ reminds me of me, ha! ) Loved when he literally took Chara down when play stopped in front of the net, in our last regular season game against the Bs. For a guy that small to even think about taking down Andre the Giant deserves a bit of respect.

I would also try to get rid of Heatley and his salary.

Yeah, okay. A bit overpaid. Beautiful hat trick first home game of the season, yada yada, and he is really good, but hasn’t exactly been earning his keep.

Am I only one who can’t stand Huskins? I mean, he’s first on my get-rid-of list. Wallin and Blake should probably retire. Wallin can be good, but since he came back from injury game 5 of the Wings series, he’s looking mediocre at best out there. I like Blake, but he’s overrated especially this season. Oh god, and don’t get me started on Staubitz. He’s got some talent and potential and loves the rough stuff, but he too often decides to get in the box at the worst possible time for us. Can’t stand that guy, even though fans seem to like him. (It’s the tickler, isn’t it?)

by JenLovesHockey on May 19, 2010 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

oh, and I’m definitely not intending to imply that Nabby’s “the problem” – just want to make that clear. It’s his salary and the inconsistency of his game.

For some reason I have a feeling Jumbo is going to be a goddamn beast this year. Sharks are going to be tied 1-1 in the series going on the road for game three in the first round, and five minutes into the second he is just going to take over. ~Plank

I am really starting to like Kent Huskins.

Now I know why DW wanted to resign him. Huskins is one of those players who doesn’t do much in the regular season but amps his game up in the playoffs. Love it.

by U Guys R Good on May 20, 2010 9:00 AM PDT up reply actions

If you want to judge on regular season performance

then yeah I would want to get rid of Huskins and Blake too.

But this entire postseason, both of them have far exceeded my expectations and have held our defense intact. There’s nothing you can really do against Chicago if they are just flat out faster than you are.

by U Guys R Good on May 20, 2010 9:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Huskins is good at passing, he often makes nice, smart plays

but I’ve seen a number of times leave Nabby completely stranded in front of the net or fail to keep on his guy in front of Nabby. Really talking regular season, specifically, in several instances. Yelling “fucking Huskins!” a few too many times, it got stuck in my mind that I don’t like him.

by JenLovesHockey on May 20, 2010 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

my apologies if my criticism of Nabby sounded harsh or like it’s coming from a fairweather fan or something, but it’s really the combination of his skill level and consistency as well as his salary, that I felt compelled to jump in when The Sear said something yesterday.

by Beyr on May 21, 2010 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Can we postpone all "trade player XYZ"

“drop player ABC” “player DEF is terrible and should retire” talk until after the season is over? I have enough crap to worry about with the WCF without having to read all of this rosterbation while the Sharks are still playing. None of us knows how the offseason will go, and we have no idea what DW will do when the season is done. All we know is that the season is not done yet! Sorry, I’m off the soapbox now.

by Chicago Shark on May 20, 2010 5:07 AM PDT reply actions

I agree to a point

Talking about trades and drops now is moot, as the season isn’t over until it’s over.
Talking about who should be scratched and dressed for games, is fan speculation and I think is a part of fandom fun.
I do, however, maintain a list of who I’d keep if I was GM, who I’d drop, and who is a maybe, for a couple of years now. It is always based on the current roster at the time, whomever DW trades, brings in, or drops. But, it is a list basically for my entertainment and speculation, and has never been shared.
That being said, I really really really … hope that the Sharks pull this series out, go to the finals, and take the Cup!

Who dresses and who doesn't is a valid point for speculation

Rosterbation (who stays and who goes) is better left for the offseason. We’re not quite there yet, and with some luck won’t be for a little while longer. I’m just saying, the stress of the WCF is enough to worry about at this point, so stacking more irrelevant (at this point in time) crap on top is too much. I’d rather enjoy watching hockey than reading stupid comments on how the team should be blown up in the offseason, or about how Nabokov should be shipped back to Russia (even though he’s Kazakh), or about how Joe has no heart and should be traded. I’m just sick of it.

by Chicago Shark on May 20, 2010 9:02 AM PDT up reply actions

same here gosh!

someone said it yesterday. This is the team we have here and now. How is it going to help any to be talking about who to get rid of. We still have quite a few games left to seriously bust it out and BATTLE. I know the Sharks have to step it up but no point in discussing who to get rid of now. I’m not sure if you’re aware they may be reading this and all we’re doing is betraying our Sharks players by talking smack.

My friends got an ear-full for rosterbating 15 minutes before game 2 started. I mean seriously…15 minutes before puck drops and you’re saying sell Nabby? C’MON! I just feel like its kicking a person when they’re down. I understand we’re all pretty invested in this and bi-polar but Nabby is who we have Greisser is who we have Jumbo, Heater and Marleau…stick with them until this is over! Geesh.

Meh

Don’t take rosterbation as some sort of defeatist attitude that our season is over. A lot of this stuff is stuff we’ve talked about on/off since the regular season. It doesn’t have anything to do with thinking our season is over, at least not for me. It probably has a lot more to do with the 2 day break before the next game. People are probably just trying to take their minds off the loss last Tuesday and being down 0-2 in the series while we wait for Friday’s game.

by Khaaz on May 20, 2010 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions

true, true

Seems that we’re all having some form of anxiety this week, manifested in various ways from fingerpointing to rosterbating (what an awesome term), blaming Lost mojo as bad mojo, to proclamations of suicidical intent.
Trade talk is jumping the gun right now. Can I wait another 24+ hours for game 3 without chewing off my fingertips? No, not really. But yes, some of us, including myself have been re-evaluating the roster a bit too soon.

I was just coming here to post that. This encapsulates how I feel to a T. I also posted this on theNHLArena.com this morning, because this is how I truly feel:

Yep, in the immortal words of Dan Fucking Boyle, its time for us to “raise our middle fingers in the air” to all the outsiders and non-believers!

I am disappointed, that’s true. Do I think this series is over? NO. Am I nervous anyway? Yes.
But that’s because I’m a goddam Sharks fan and I think it’s safe to say every other true Sharks fan out there is experiencing similar emotions.

I believe.
I believe like I have never believed before.
I believe that these are not yesterday’s Sharks.
I believe in every guy on our roster.
I believe they have the mental toughness that was so sorely lacking in previous years to get thru this round.
I believe these Sharks eat adversity for breakfast.
I believe that those who have already written the Sharks off aren’t true Sharks fans anyway, so screw off and take your negativity elsewhere. We don’t need it and we don’t want it.

Overcome! I believe you can boys.

Should be a great game, even if it’s Russia’s “A” team (minus Nabby) vs Canada’s “C” team led by Correy Perry.

Dan Boyle = future captain

I think he’s proven himself worthy with his comments these playoffs. No bullshit, just “yeah we won/lost… but there’s more hockey to play. Still a long way to go before we prove ourselves.” That’s the kind of attitude I like to see. And it makes me happier and happier that Campbell ditched for the money in Chicago. Maybe we should start cheering him everytime he touches the puck.. sure would freak him out ;)

Nothing against Blake, but I have a feeling that he’s done. Which is alright in my books, cause it’ll leave some cap space to negotiate with Pavs, Seto, Patty, and Nabby…

How cool? Think Steve Nash...
