I'm probably not the best person to be writing gameday today. After the Sharks dropped the first two games at home I had a hard time finding any positives in the situation, and despite TCY's excellent post on keeping the faith, had to stay away from the comments-- it was a whole lot of fist-pumping optimism, a whole lot of smiles.

I guess I just couldn't relate.

Then game three happened. Heartbreaking on so many levels. The Sharks played well, as they have for large segments of this series, but were unfortunately unable to capitalize on their chances. Whether that has to do with Chicago's defensive presence in front of the crease, Antti Niemi's general brilliance between the pipes, or a little bit of both, it was frustrating to see Dustin Byfuglien (of all freaking people) put the game on ice in overtime after San Jose had thrown everything they could at the Blackhawks.

It's readily apparent this series has been closer than the 3-0 lead indicates, and I guess on some level the Sharks were due-- it's eerily similar to Detroit beforehand, where a couple big goals and defensive breakdowns ended up tilting the scoreboard one team's way, and maybe in the eyes of the Hockey Gods the bounces had to even out or something. I don't really know. Expecting any sort of in-depth analysis from me today is fruitless.

All I'm really aware of is how proud I am of this team for a relatively solid season. If they manage to dig deep and deliver a win tonight, I fully expect to be headed to the United Center for a game six, and that's a great opportunity for the franchise to put their stamp on something special. You get to that point and now you're looking at a home and home, with both matches definitely winnable.

We'll hear this so many times over the course of the next week, but it really is just one game at a time. If we can assume that the Sharks have a 50-50 shot at winning tonight, all they need is the coin to come up heads at noon, grab a plane, and get back to flipping once again. Each game is an independent event with this approach, so pay no attention to the fact that four in a row is what will be required. It starts tonight, and that is the only thing that should worry our pretty little heads.

The effort has been there for the most part-- of course there are going to be nitpickings and complaints, hell even after wins there are more than enough to go around, but this team has legitimately put their careers on the line out there. Marleau rebounded from a so-so game two (despite notching a pair of goals) and did a lot of great things yesterday with the puck, moving his feet and driving hard to the net. Joe Thornton has played like a bull with his balls roped. Dan Boyle is a guy you never have to worry about, Nabokov looked pretty damn good in game three, and the role players all played their roles.

They haven't folded like a house of cheap cards.

It's just a matter of capitalizing. And even though a lot of things are going to have to break right for San Jose (and, concurrently, break against Chicago), there's always that glimmer of hope waiting down past the echoes of this dark tunnel. Tonight gets us one small step closer to swimming in the bliss that has evaded us during the last three games.

Godspeed San Jose. Burn down the United Center tonight. We're not quite ready to head to the golf course just yet.

Prediction: Sharks win 4-1. Goals by McGinn, Boyle, Pavelski, and Setoguchi. Niemi finally cracks, and The Tank gets ready to rock.

Go Sharks.

We're certainly down

But not out. Remember, the Flyers barely won game 4 at home against the Bruins, and look what happened? They won the series. Yeah, the Sharks have one hell of a hole to dig out of, but that doesn’t mean we as fans, should give up. Show your pride.
Go Sharks!

"The Payback"

In my perfect world, if the 4th game were to have a theme song it would be the inimitable James Brown’s “The Payback” and the Shark’s rallying cry would be “I don’t know karate but I do know CRAZY!”.

And, of course, they would win.

I’m just going with blind faith at the moment, one game at a time.
What else can we do? Either that or drown in depression and pessimism.
Your game day post, Plank is depressing, but at least you’re not down in the dumps yet… /sigh.

I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day

I believe I can fly

One game at a time. I’m trying so hard to believe. But it doesn’t matter if I believe it or not, the players themselves need to believe it. And I believe they can fly.

Well I feel like saying something nice

But at the same time, well…you know. FTF has been fun visiting, and have no desire to be an ass, Here is to a good game, Good Luck for both sides, but obviously for me, hoping it is only one plane back to SJS and not two. Regardless of how this series ends up either way, watching these two teams play compared to the Leastern Conference, these are the best two team in the league right now. Once again Good Luck, but may my teams luck be a little stronger today.

I’m not trying to be an ass, but also not patronizing, just really want to say good luck, and still pull for my boys.

I'll thrown in my 2 cents as well

I’ve had fun here, and here’s to a seeing good game played today. The thing that bothers me the most about the series is that the wins total says nothing about how close the games have been, or how good these two teams really are and how well they match up against each other (INCREDIBLY well). The fact that these games haven’t been score-fests with two such high-powered offenses proves that. Of course I want the Hawks to win, but last game was a coin toss, and we got lucky – sometimes you just gotta get lucky.

Game on, and good luck.

can you guys explain something to me

as a hawks fan that loves to read other teams boards, but rarely their comments, im curious about something.

why do you guys (and vancouver before you and nashville before them and apparently even teams were not playing) hate byfuglien?

and saying “he just stands in front of the net like a pussy” isnt good enough, because if you had a middle linebacker that played hockey, youd do it too, and love it.

LET'S. GO. HAWKS.

by elpjuly4 on May 23, 2010 8:54 AM PDT reply actions

For me it is the dickhead antics to the crowd after scoring. No class. Hockey players are supposed to be above that nonsense.

by psantangeli on May 23, 2010 9:01 AM PDT up reply actions

This above all else!!!

And. He not really that good or that physical.

But mainly his on ice gloating especially towards fans. He has that same dick attitude that Kane does.

by skilletboy on May 23, 2010 9:52 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Both of the above. Even if he was a Shark I would not like him. You can call “bullshit” on that all you want, but I really hate that kind of attitude and to me it isn’t all about winning or losing…Celebrate after a goal or win all you want! I don’t mind that at all! It’s when you start acting like you’re some sort of god is when I can’t stand it.

And this exactly as well…

the “big guy on the other team thing” was my only reason until that vancouver series.

i thought the fans in vancouver were stupid, but the way buff showboated is classless and belongs in the nba or nfl- not hockey.

now all i can see is that arrogance – denver_diaspora

I agree with you. He’s a douche, and I don’t want douches on our team either.

Yep, some of us are smart enough not to be swayed by a player’s uniform only – I admit there are plenty of guys on other teams who I think are awesome, just ‘cuz they’re talented and seem like decent guys (Fucking love Overchkin, for example). Some Sharks fans hate it when I say Player X on Team Y is awesome, but fuck it. And I wouldn’t want some asshole on our team either. These players who “act like gods” are the worst for sure. They act like they fucking saved the universe and I just wanna smack ’em upside the head.

Anyway, Go Sharks!!!

by JenLovesHockey on May 23, 2010 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions

There are ton of guys in the league that I love that aren’t or were never Sharks. That’s weird that some fans hate when you say that, it’s not like you’re any less of a Sharks fan because you like other players or maybe even a fan of another team. That just shows that you are a hockey fan, not just a Sharks fan!

Yeah, I agree with you again. Some fans are just biased/blind followers, I think, and they can’t accept that, if our own guys were to act like douches, we should tell it like it is, etc.

by JenLovesHockey on May 23, 2010 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe...

…but let’s face it… he’s the kind of player (like Homer in Det.) who every team would want… I can’t stand him, but I’d love for him to be in Teal. He comes up with big goals at key times… that’s another reason to hate him if he’s on the other side.

…gotta look at it from both sides of the fence.

Same reason we hate good players on other teams

They’re good… although I admit there’s something about Byfuglien that gets under my skin… I think he reminds me of ‘Sheed with his posturing to the refs a little… but honestly I can’t really put my finger on it… good question.

I also feel somewhat about him the way I feel about Holmstrom. He engages in a game in front of the net that I wish there were a way to eliminate. It’s just kinda stupid. As an ex goalie I don’t find it terribly interesting.

I’m with you Plank, in that I’ve also avoided commenting for the last week, by and large. It’s not that I don’t think it can be done. Rather, it’s just so overwhelmingly frustrating and heartbreaking to see a 3-0 deficit after a postseason in which they’ve executed so well on so many levels, and legitimately elevated their game. The fact that Byfuglien has two GWGs in the series doesn’t help matters. That said, I’m also approaching today with a “one game at a time” mentality as well. Go Sharks.

Every time the Game 3 announcers said “if necessary” after mentioning Game 5, I wanted to smash the TV. It seemed like they said it more often than they needed to, like it was a personal attack. I like them better than the NBC guys. I just wish NBC would stop pretending they are interested in showing hockey. It’s a free weekend morning filler for them. They are using the same lame way of covering it they have been using since the 70’s.

It doesn’t help the NHL at all to have the same old hacks doing the same shallow coverage for 8 days a year. Even if they are ‘broadcast’.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. Mike Milbury is clearly an expert when it comes to hockey.

We're still more awesome that Chicago, no matter how this thing turns out

We get to live in the Bay area, where there’s art, culture, diversity, innovation in technology, amazing schools, smart people, and plenty of Indian restaurants.

Sure, Chicago’s got some of each of those things, too, but we don’t have to shovel snow in the winter. We’re still more awesome than they are.

by JenLovesHockey on May 23, 2010 11:56 AM PDT reply actions

My aunt & uncle live in Chicago. Aunt grew up in MN & uncle grew up in Iowa.
Somehow Chicago is worse than either of those two places. (altho I think it may have been the intervening 30 years in NYC that broke them.)

Yeah. My wife and o went to Chicago for vacation two years ago. We saw the Sharks win at the United center too.

But, the White-non White divide was really obvious and uncomfortable. I’m white and it was really sad. My wife is Asian and it was difficult for her.

And yes CA can be bad but it made me feel grateful for growing up in such a diverse place.

Lousy Defensemen

When you have Wallin and Huskins playing a regular shift, you don’t have the talent necessary on the blueline to win a stanley cup.

These two guys have been so exposed by the Hawks. They will never play for the cup with these two slowpokes in the lineup.
