Sharks win in overtime, take 3-0 stranglehold on series
It's nights like these when you realize just why you're alive.
Seven minutes into overtime Justin Williams ripped a slap shot wide of the net as the Red Wings overpursued below the circles, springing a Sharks 2 on 1. With Joe Thornton carrying the puck down the wing and Patrick Marleau driving hard to the net, Thornton threaded a pass through Brian Rafalski to Marleau's patient stick.
Tape to tape, take it to the bank.
With that goal the annals of history became unraveled, the faces of past failure suddenly transformed into symbols of success. The expectation headed into tonight was that Detroit would play their best game of the series, and after the initial thirty minutes of play, that expectation held true. The Wings dominated the Sharks throughout the first period and the first half of the second, peppering Evgeni Nabokov with shot upon shot from various angles.
Roughly ten minutes into the game the Wings appeared to have struck first. Henrik Zetterberg took a pass off the skate to beat Nabokov, but the officials overturned the ruling due to the fact that the Swedish winger had kicked in the goal with his toe and displayed a distinct kicking motion. As the review went to Toronto and a premature octopus flew to the ice, Fear The Fin's first star of the game made an appearance. From "Let It Be" by The Beatles during the initial conference amongst the officials, "The Waiting" by Tom Petty during the review in Toronto, and "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes after the call was reversed, the DJ's tunes were timely and on point.
Say what you will about Marleau, Nabokov, Couture, Setoguchi, or Thornton-- Detroit's event coordination staff might have had the performance of the postseason.
Following the overturned goal, waves continued to roar into the Sharks defensive zone. Although he Sharks did a good job of keeping the Red Wings' talented forward group to the perimeter and blocking shots from the point, Detroit managed to assert themselves on the low cycle and flip pucks from the boards into the low slot in front of Nabokov.
That zone domination paid off as the Wings struck first. Carrying the puck from the center of the circles, Nicklas Lidstrom drove below the net amidst a scrambling Sharks defensive unit. He found Franzen behind Nabokov, who promptly circled above the end line and sent a centering feed to Tomas Holmstrom in front of the net for the first tally of the game. Kent Huskins, who had taken a high stick from Dan Boyle in the seconds preceding the goal, was unable to body the gargantuan winger out of the crease.
Evgeni Nabokov, who looked excellent and kept the Sharks within striking distance all night long, came up with a pivotal save in the minutes following the Detroit lead. Henrik Zetterberg was awarded a penalty shot when Logan Couture allegedly covered the puck in the crease during a scramble in front of the net. With Nabokov sprawling to take away to lower half of the net, Zetterberg attempted his patented forehand, deke, backhand up high trickery during the ensuing attempt. Nabokov reached behind him to snare the shot with a brilliant glove save, and kept the deficit at one.
However, Detroit continued to force the issue. Dan Cleary banged the twine late in the third after finding a soft spot in San Jose's defense, and it looked as if the Wings would take a two goal lead into intermission. With the seconds ticking down to the ten second mark, San Jose cycled in the zone and Joe Pavelski attempted to jam the puck in past Jimmy Howard from behind the net. It kicked out to the low slot, where Setoguchi pounced and slid it five hole to cut the lead in half with two seconds left on the clock.
The memories of bad bounces were thought to have been left behind following the Sharks first round series against Colorado, but they reared their ugly head again at the start of the second. Henrik Zetterberg threw a puck at the net that Nabokov managed to save, but the ensuing rebound bounced off Douglas Murray's skate back into the net. If Joe Louis Arena needed a reason to get behind their team already, they had it. And once again, Nabokov was up to the task, stopping everything that seemed to be thrown his way. He would not surrender a goal for the remainder of the game.
The middle of the second saw the Sharks push back to even the score, generating good opportunities against a relatively untested Jimmy Howard. None was better than a slick cross-ice feed from Joe Pavelski to Devin Setoguchi, who chipped the puck just wide towards the tail end of the period.
The momentum from the end of that periodwould eventually pay off.
Heading into the third period down two goals in Joe Louis Arena is a recipe that results in some pretty awful concoctions. It generally gives you the runs, your palms get sweaty, and eventually you just head to the can to expel the mistakes from your orifices. Punch your card and get back on your horse tomorrow.
Turns out the Sharks got on that horse today.
Joe Thornton started things off for San Jose by controlling the puck and driving to the front of the net, utilizing the traffic Patrick Marleau supplied in front to place a great shot past Jimmy Howard. It seemed as if the Sharks wouldn't let up on their attack during the entire period, running circles around the tired Detroit defenseman below the circles, engaging themselves physically, and reaping the rewards from a much more aggressive approach to pinching and puck carrying from their defensive unit. All that hard work paid off with six minutes left in the period when Logan Couture flung a shot from an off angle to beat Jimmy Howard five hole and tie the game. If there is one thing I know, it is that Couture has won the hearts of the Hockey Gods. Ever since coming up to San Jose after the trade deadline, Couture has made a habit of scoring the ugliest and dirtiest goals on the roster. The blessings from above have bathed him in light.
Although the Sharks would go 0-7 on the power play tonight, squandering a brilliant opportunity with two and a half minutes in the game to put the icing on the cake, it didn't matter. Nabokov handled the rigors and silenced the ghosts of Joe Louis by providing timely saves throughout, and the team as a whole responded with a bold and dangerous attack for the last twenty seven minutes of the game to score three goals and put a stranglehold on their series.
It was a performance that was one of the best in recent memory-- the demons of Joe Louis vanquished, the Red Wings overcome, Thornton and Marleau landing the killing blow in overtime when it mattered most. A period such as the first would usually result in a lead that was insurmountable for this franchise. But on this day, it was one that proved to be a mere stepping stone. The path to closure is now just one stride away.
It's nights like these when you realize just why you're alive.
Go Sharks.

Thanks, got roped into LOST and put it off even more. Couldn’t even think about trying to recap for the first two hours after the game— I was honestly stunned with emotion.
I don’t think the entirety of it all will even fully set in until tomorrow morning.

This game’s result changes everything. I finally feel like this club is finally ready to overcome the proverbial hump that sports writers have labeled us with. Just about everyone expected this series to go the full frame, but here we are with an opportunity to close it out on Thursday. Wow. Just wow.
Jimmy Howard hasn’t played like his regular season self at all in this series. Poor rebound control. Soft goals. Inability to hold a lead.
Patty Marleau: An Erotic Life
Picked overall #2
Adored by the faithful
Trade rumors abound
Turns-around career
Year of the Cup?
Joe Pavelski: Real- American Mojo
If you would have told me before the playoffs began that the Sharks would have a 2-0 series lead going into Detroit, I would have nodded my head and said it was possible.
If you would have told me they would be up 3-0 in the series, and come back from a two goal deficit in the third period at The Joe to eventually win it overtime, I would have told you to check yourself into an insane asylum.
Unreal, and I feel the same way about the hump. I’ve always been warily optimistic about this team, but right now, there’s very little keeping me from exploding through the roof with visions of grandeur.

I never in a million years thought we could be up 3-0.
My wildest dreams (quite literally) were taking game 4 after winning 1 and 2.
I don’t think any team in the playoffs is playing like the Sharks are right now. They’re all in the zone, they’re all working and I just don’t see any quit in them.
I’m not getting ahead of myself, I hope they can keep the intensity and pace up, but after 9 games I can’t think of a team in the league that is playing close to the consistency and drive that the Sharks are.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
It’s literally unreal. Detroit definitely had their chances in this game, and halfway through it seemed as if the Sharks were probably going to drop the first game of the series. But damn man, they just found that switch and flipped the fuck out of it.
I think there’s a big push back from Detroit in game four— can’t imagine they go out without a fight, especially like tonight where they just looked tired/beat in the third. Game five will probably be the most difficult for them to win considering The Tank will be screaming for blood and everything will just be electric. After that though, you run into some dicey momentum swings and the road gets a lot more unclear.
Cleaning this up in the next two games would be huge, I think. Want no part of a game six in Detroit.

Werd.
See, I’m actually the opposite. I’m horrified of what can go wrong, and I’m letting those fears keep me totally grounded. That and they keep me from admitting that the Sharks are playing some god damn good hockey, after taking arguably one of the worst shots on the chin ever with the Boyle OT mishap. It’s just so backwards for me. I’m ecstatic. Cautiously ecstatic.

Things to be amazed at
Other than the obvious “HOLY CRAP WE HAVE A 3-0 LEAD!”
1.) After displaying little to no hustle for the first two periods, the Sharks came out SKATING in the third, and in overtime. It’s hard to remember a game this season where the Sharks came out flat and found their legs.
2.) 2 Goal deficit overcome. Can not say how huge that is. No lead is safe.
3.) All goals at even strength. No secret that if you want to win in this league, you have to be better 5 on 5. For the Sharks to have such a strong 5 on 5 game is a WONDERFUL sign.
4.) Evgeni Nabokov shut the door. We all saw this same game played a ton of times in the regular season. The team would give up 3 goals in the first period and a half on a flat effort. You couldn’t really fault Nabby, because his defense had pretty much abandoned him, but you just felt that if he could stop the NEXT one, maybe we could fashion a comeback. And then, bang, number 4, maybe number 5 would go in. Cue the Squirrel, and we’d be looking at 7 or 8 on the board. But tonight, once the team was down, Evgeni Nabokov was lights out. Detroit threatened, but Nabokov kept his team in it when it mattered.
5.) Oh yeah, penalty shot.
6.) Pavel Datsyuk: 22 minutes, -2, 1SOG. Brian Rafalski, 26 minutes, -2. Marc Eduard Vlasic and Rob Blake. 25 and 26 minutes (rounded up) respectively, both +3.
7.) Faceoffs dead even at 33 a piece. We knew Detroit would probably reverse the faceoff % at home, but for the Sharks to hold dead even on the road is nothing to sneeze at.
8.) San Jose was outshot to the tune of 14 to 8 in the first. How big is that Setogutchi goal?
9.) Did I mention we’re up 3-0 and came back from a 2 goal deficit on the road?
10.) Biggest game in franchise history this Thursday. GO SHARKS!

Stunning results for sure

Indeed and not to pour cold water on this party but Dany Heatley needs to stop floating around and take puck pursuit/possession seriously. He was giving me fits with his lax efforts last night. I found him to be a glaring liability in a game where puck possession is king.
Having said that the boys amazed me, I was so stunned I didn’t even raise my hands on Marleau’s goal because I didn’t believe it actually went in. Flat out amazing turn of events. Seto and Couture’s goals were equally fantastic and Jumbo’s was effortlessly awesome. Patty’s hustle made it happen in the end and I’m blown away. Detroit fans are not used to this and I just love it. GO SHARKS!
I'll drink that! oh...I'll drink TO that, oh crap I quit drinking.
Just to be fair
while it looks like Heater is feeling better, I doubt he’s still 100%. He’s still skating slowly, but his shot is still there, and he’s starting to get better. Still, I’ll take a Heatley at <100%.
by Chicago Shark on May 5, 2010 5:06 AM PDT up reply actions
I'll take him
Any way he comes. I wore my Heatley jersey all day at work. One thing that does concern me is it seems like JT is just not wanting to shoot. He’s missed several excellent scoring chances to shoot with lanes open, but instead, he holds off and waits on another Shark to come up and pass the puck. I’ve seen it in the Avs series and I’m seeing it again this series. By the time he waits on another Shark, the Avs or the Wings already have several D-men in place and the shot is blocked.
I know my neighbors are going to love it when hockey season is over. I was screaming “Just shoot the damn thing” so much last night, it probably sounded like I was calling for a murder in my house. Then when Paddy got the go ahead goal in OT – wow. I woke the dead I’m sure.
Go Sharks.

haha
weird ive never heard any mention of Thornton’s preference to pass.
But seriously though, I’m not a big fan of convincing Joe to shoot. After that game against the Flyers where he had those two identical last second cross crease feeds to Heater in 2 on 1s I have succumb to the idea that Joe knows best.
Also I think he was shooting a lot in the first two games. If I have time later today I’ll do some sharktistical analysis.
I shouldn't have said anything.
…and Heatley being <100% is a valid point, one I should have mentioned. It’s something coaching may want to look at as I focused on Dany throughout the game we all know that giveaways are a killer, and the Sharks played soft early on. His shot is epic for sure, I rarely can trace his shot because it’s so blasted hard and seldom can anyone react or predict it’s direction. He’s a shooter.
I'll drink that! oh...I'll drink TO that, oh crap I quit drinking.
Heatley would say he's 100%
But I think we all know he’s not quite 110%

At some point...
Heatley is definitely in a goal scoring funk right now. Even taking in the last 10 games or so from the regular season- I think he has maybe one goal in 16 or more games (pure guess). But with Heatley, as Rob Blake likes to say, he just needs one chance. And I can’t help but feel that some goals will be coming very soon- he more than anyone on the team has the ability to score goals in huge bunches.
I hope so
I need the points in my playoff pool. I’ve been racking up with Seto and Pavs though.

Solid post Elvis. I thought Datsyuk did a good job in the first period shutting down Pavelski, but after that he seemed to struggle. Nothing like getting one of the best shutdown forward in the league to show up a -2 against your second line.

After the Avs I was one of the few crazies that said I would like the Wings over the Coyotes. I just had a good feeling we would play well against them. Series isn’t over with yet, but I’m finally allowing myself to believe this is actually happening.
Just fucking WOW! 3-0 over the Wings. Never saw that coming.

I also wanted Detroit in re second round. I told my Wings fan friend that I wanted the Sharks to play the Wings and he was like “do you WANT them to get creamed?!” I didn’t know what to expect going in, but now I’m super glad we drew Detroit :D my Dany Heatley t-shirt is now 6-0 when I wear it on gameday. and actually I couldn’t find it yesterday but I miraculously managed to find it during the second period and then the Sharks turned it on in the third. You can bet I’ll be wearing it tomorrow

What a game!
What a nice feeling! Nabby played amazing, kept us in it! Steeling a playoff game, it feels good to be on the winning side! Far too many times as a Sharks fan we are on the other side after a game has been stolen! I’m sure there is going to be a good number of Detroit fans complaining about the refs or Sharks players diving, same old record. Bottom line is that the Sharks went into Detroit, went down 2 goals, and stayed in it. They did not give up and it payed off for them in the end!
There's definetly something special about the Sharks this year.
This is the happiest and most excited I’ve ever been about hockey. Ever.

I am most excited about that our secondary scoring (in this case, the first line) has shown up – I know we can’t do everything with “lil” Joe, so I am glad Patty and Jumbo came to the game.
To only imagine what can happen when the sharks fire on all cylinders and score through 4 lines. The wings or any other opponent won’t know how to cover us. We will be a threat EVERYWHERE!
Great account
I’m still amazed at how fast Nabokov got the glove up considering how close Zetterberg was.

Didn’t you hear? Nabby lines the inside of his glove with metal and inserts powerful magnets into each puck before the game starts. It makes glove saves easier for him, but also can cause a metallic clang, causing people to confuse a glove save with hitting it off the post.

Food for thought
Detroit now faces an 0-3 deficit for the 10th time in franchise history. Only once have they rallied to force a Game 7 — in 1945 Stanley Cup Finals versus the Toronto Maple Leafs — but failed to win the series. In all other cases, Detroit was swept.
Let’s hope it’s the latter.
Seriously? Nine times they just rolled over and died? I like those odds.

note even 'warning'
came by to say you were trolling. to quote the article in which you say we are still blaming the refs:
But, in the end, the Red Wings dug their own graves, failing to convert a penalty shot after Logan Couture was ruled to have covered the puck in the crease behind Evgeni Nabokov, giving up a goal with just four seconds remaining in the first period, then allowing three unanswered goals, including a Couture blast that Jimmy Howard simply misplayed.but in the end, it is what you perceive. so whatever, i dont care about what people say on the internetz…. "That Jimmy Howard simply misplayed"
Over on NHL.com they have him saying that he always plays those situations that way, and that he’ll continue to do so. Apparently, Couture was lucky enough to sneak one under his pad (paraphrase of Howard’s words). He still has some learning to do to hang with the big boys.
Haven’t been over to your neighborhood, so I won’t comment on the state of Wings’ fans. Just wanted to say that Howard doesn’t think he misplayed it, just that he thinks Couture got lucky.

Oh well if ‘warning’ says it it must be true, whoever that is. The officiating in that game was about as good as you could ever hope it to be in an NHL playoff game, and yet some people in the comments were still blaming the refs as though PP’s should always be even between 2 teams no matter who is actually committing penalties.
as though PP’s should always be even between 2 teams no matter who is actually committing penalties.
That’s one of the things I really do hate about postseason commentary on officiating. Everyone has this belief that penalties need to be exactly even in numbers. And that’s complete bs. If one team is cheating (using in a general sense, I really don’t need any flame wars around here) more than the other, they should be penalized more. I tend to look more at the evenness of missed calls and bad calls. And on those fronts, things have seemed to me to be pretty even in every game the Sharks have played through a series and a half. The Sharks have been very disciplined, and it has helped them get a special teams advantage. It’s just smart hockey. There’s no unwritten rule that says teams have to be called for an even number of penalties, no matter what. That’s retarded.
This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.

The only time I thought the number of penalties should be distributed differently was when the Sharks were up 4-0 or something on Dallas, and the Stars had 5 power plays and the Sharks had none. That just looked a little strange to me, and the play backed me up.
But other than that, if you don’t have the puck and are getting outworked, you’ll likely have more penalties called against you. That’s hockey. I may bitch about it during the games sometimes, but at the end of the game the penalty disparity is usually justified.
Unless Mike Cvik is a linesman for that game, of course ;)

That dream was an epic one. Apparently, there was this list of names that these evil-doers were killing off, one of the most prominent being Joe Pavelski. After playing soccer with those guys (and, as a side note, I don’t like soccer and haven’t played it outside of PE), I found out about it and went on a train to try and fix it. After going through these huge cars with lasers – I apparently knew martial arts and gymnastics or something – I battled some evil cats. And then we got off in Alaska, where an owl told me that the only way to bring everyone back to life was to get the forest animals to line dance, as that would create a magic spell. So I did, and the day was saved.
In hindsight, it could be a pretty epic fantasy/action movie if the plot is tightened up/makes sense.

This reminds me of a story i wrote when i was 6 right before a playoff series with dallas. Basically I was Owen Nolans son and he was kidnapped by Madano day before the series started. So Me and Ricci went and rescued him. Owen Nolan proceded to beat the crap out of Modano it was epic.

Dont boo your team!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
So holy shit!!! Did that just happen? The morning after and I still can’t believe it! I mean, it was just incredible! They came back from a 2 goal deficit in the 3rd period over the Red Wings in Detroit to take a 3-0 series lead!
I should repeat that last epic sentence.
They came back from a 2 goal deficit in the 3rd period over the Red Wings in Detroit to take a 3-0 series lead!
Oh, that is beautiful! I have to say, I said before the playoffs began that I thought Couture would be a key to our secondary scoring…and tonight he proved why. Kid has the golden stick! He’s always a threat to score. One of many we seem to have on our roster now! I mean, if you’re defending Pavs and Seto, Thornton and Marleau will get you. Try to lock both of them down, and Couture will get you! Nichol can get you. Manny’s gonna finish one of his chances at some point. I mean, it’s ridiculous. This team has a drive and a determination that I have never seen out of a Sharks team! It’s a beautiful thing.
I just hope they can keep up the same kind of intensity and level of play against a team that is not Detroit. They had a lot of motivation to put past demons to bed this series. Will they have the same drive against Vancouver or Chicago? I think so, but it will remain to be seen…if we can get that 4th win!
Here’s to hoping we get to celebrate something big tomorrow evening!
This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.
We have a winnnaaahhhh
practically did a backflip on the winning goal and through my son in the air (don’t worry I caught him). So fired up to watch the next Sharks game.

we have lost
four of the last five playoff games at home guys. this is not our year. not a knock against you guys, but i will obviously be pulling for the nucks (i like kessler a lot, going to meet him in the offseason when he comes back to Livonia). I’ve been a fan of the sharks-wings rivalry since ’94, and this series propelled it to another level. nice comeback there, even if the weak goals were a rusty dagger jammed into my kidney
Was talking to a friend here at work who is a Wings fan – his comments:
We’re good and take every advantage we see. He can’t believe the Wings have double the penalty minutes we do (he said nothing bout conspiracy, just disbelief so don’t rag on him). And he asks that we finish this and put him out of his misery.
:)

The thing that is being overlooked is how smart the Sharks are playing. Blake hasn’t taken his requisite penalty per night and Huskins has only committed one penalty this series that I can think of.

Yup! The league clearly hate the Red Wings…that’s why they’ve been to the SC Finals in 6 of the last 14 years, and hae won 11 Stanley Cups in franchise history.

I’m still euphoric!
It’s nights like these when you realize just why you’re alive.
I couldn’t whole-heartedly agree more with that sentiment. I’m so proud to be a Sharks fan right now. All that wait, time, rage and disappointments have paid off. Funny thing now is that all the people at work who couldn’t give a rat’s ass about the Sharks are now high-fiving me…weird but its OK cause nothing is going to bring me down! Onto tomorrow! What I would like to see in Game 4
Sharks score the first goal in the first 2 minutes of the game and watch as the steady stream of red and white pour out of the building in disgust. It’s going to happen…GO SHARKS!!
I Would love to see that....
Either that or zero – zero tie going into overtime and the sharks score in the first 30 seconds to end the game and their season.
I don't care how they do it I just want to see hand shakes on Thursday.

For a goalie
yes. Goalies in most sports tend to peak at an older age, and while 26ish is older than I am (24), it’s still not that old for a goalie.

Don't know what to do...
Was absent for the first period and a half…down 3-1
Stayed around for half of the 2nd…nothing happened
Missed the rest of the game due to stuff…Sharks comeback 4-3
What do I do for game 4?
Pattern is simple enough
No-show the start, show up for a couple minutes, then leave for the rest of the game.

How can this week be any better?
Sharks up 3-0

Top Dog in the Orange County…I think I am going to cry
Funny thing is that going into the third i had already accepted the game as a loss. I figured, Wings came out and dominated a lot but that we did a lot of positive things we could take into being ready to take game 4, but wow. Now looking at where things are I’ve gotta say…Detroit’s goaltending is just not good enough to beat us in this series. It took 7 games to knock out the Yotes and they weren’t much of a scoring team at all. I thought we might have a chance to do some damage going into this series offensively after seeing Howard after losing game 6 in round 1 5-2 and saying that Pheonix got “lucky” winning that game. a team beating you clean 5 times isn’t luck my friend. The biggest thing has certainly been our mentality in the series. Finally looking at them as just another opponent and our size and strength has finally begun to give them fits.
Phoenix did get lucky in that game
They were lucky Howard was the goalie for the Wings.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Ha, Howard seems to think that any player is "lucky" to get a puck behind him
He said something to the same effect about Couture’s goal last night. Said he’s always made that play off the post, and will continue to do so, but Couture somehow snuck one under his pad… Dude needs an attitude adjustment.

Ughhhhhh, congrats on the win, I guess
That game tying goal was the worst and our color analyst Mickey Redmond smelled the GWG before Williams even took that slapshot. Here’s hoping you guys just set yourselves up for your worst choke yet.
3-0 is a huge lead, obviously, but we’ve let it get it to 3-2 a couple times in our past and then it feels like you’re never going to win again.
I’m glad there were less penalties in Game 3. The standard for calling penalties changed post-lockout to encourage offense, but I think it’s clear calling penalties in this series diminishes the quality of the game between these two teams.
If you guys are gonna win, do it now, don’t tease us to a Game 7 then win 15-0.
Oh, and because I think I forgot to do this before
Great write-up, Plank. And I completely agree about Detroit’s PA music choosers/DJs/whatevers – they rock. They have like, an encyclopedia of music in their head and know exactly which song to choose. Like, when Hasek tripped Gaborik, they went with, “I Believe I Can Fly.” Or at the end of Game 5 in the 2009 SCF – they played a whole bunch of songs that crowds sing along with, capitalizing on the blow-out and the emotional rush the fans were going through. Probably the best in the league at that.
Music choices aside, this game really was such a great milestone, with the Sharks finally overcoming their demons against the Red Wings and at the Joe, even the ones that plagued them only a period or two earlier. Watching this team come back from bad break after bad break, from own-goals and injury and third period deficits, I just can’t help but feel like this team is different. I have this funny feeling watching them and listening to their interviews, a feeling that I didn’t have in previous years (although, it could have been something I ate).
