The Morning After and Look at Other News of Hockey World
Amazing what few Sharks wins can do to to a fanbase. Just a couple of weeks ago the Shark Tank was booing the team as it conceded a goal, or could not convert a power play. The last home game witnessed perhaps the loudest cheering noise at the HP Pavilion since the Sharks killed off that historical 5-on-1 penalty against Edmonton four years ago. Not just that, it's impossible to turn on any radio station int South Bay without them talking about the Sharks. The cars drive around with flags. The newspapers all of a sudden cover hockey. Tim Kawakami is sounding apologetic after writing anti-Sharks articles this time of the year in the years past. It's impossible to walk through a cubicle farm in a typical Silicon Valley office and not hear Sharks talk. I even saw one woman on VTA today heading to work wearing Thornton jersey.
Are we shocked that the Sharks are up 3-0 over Detroit and that tomorrow is the elimination game? The general consensus is that yes, we did not expect the events to turn out this way. We all thought that the Sharks can beat Detroit, but no one imagined that they'll win three in a row to open the series. Only RudyKelly from BoC predicted the Sharks will beat the Wings 4-1, and in his email to us, he wrote that he's not sure why we are getting so worked up over the Wings - they're not that good.
One thing I am not surprised about is how good the Sharks have been playing. On the morning of the game against Edmonton Oilers when the Sharks were playing their worst hockey of the season (just five weeks ago!), I looked at how the Sharks did after long losing streaks since the lockout. This is what I wrote at the time:
One pattern that emerged from all these losing streaks is that as they ended, the Sharks came together as a team and in almost every instance played their best hockey of the season. ...
Every losing streak eventually ends. This is still the team that only lost 18 games in regulation out of 71 this season (let that number sink in for a second). If history is of any indication, once the Sharks jump through the hurdle of that first win, they'll come out as a better team than they were before - more unified, more focused, more hungry and more determined. Is there a better time to overcome all these demons and get the team back on track than now?
I'll admit, I was wrong by one game, because the Sharks hit the rock bottom that night in their embarrassing loss to the Oilers 1-5. But as that stretch ended in the next game against the Wild, the Sharks were indeed reborn. Since then, they won 11 times in 15 games, including the current streak of 6 in a row in playoffs. The Sharks lost just once in regulation in a regular season, once in OT and twice in playoffs to the Avalanche, both times on fluke goals. This team is playing its best hockey at the right time of the year.
If you are curious how Detroit's media is reacting to the series, George Malik has a comprehensive summary here.
When things are going the way they are going for the Sharks this spring, it's much easier to follow what else is happening around the league. Here are few random thought on what else is going on in hockey world.
- Tonight's game 3 in Vancouver between the Canucks and the Blackhawks can be a turning point in that series. In the opening game of the series, the Blackhawks looked overwhelmed by the Canucks offense, and went down 1-5. In the second game, Vancouver was leading the game 2-1 going into the 3rd period, but allowed Chicago to tie the game with a shorthanded goal by Patrick Sharp and then take the lead with 90 seconds remaining on the goal by Versteeg. After strong performance in Game 1, former Shark Christian Ehrhoff had game stats in Game 2 that we're familiar seeing this time of the year - 0 points and a -3 rating. Will Vancouver recover in front of their home fans, or is Chicago going to make a statement tonight? So far their play has been least consistent of all teams still playing in both conferences.
- While it looked like Jaroslav Halak was ready to continue sting the Penguins the same way he stung the Capitals, especially after his performance in Game 2, the big stars of the current Stanley Cup champion came through in Game 3 and Penguins are now leading that series 2-1. A game winning goal was scored at the beginning of the 3rd period by Evgeni Malkin, assisted by Sergei Gonchar and Sindey Crosby. After winning Conn Smythe trophy last season, Malkin's recent play came under a lot of scrutiny in the East. He has "only" 10 points in 9 games.
- Boston Bruins is taking on Philadephia Flyers away from home tonight, and thus far, it's been all Bruins. With the return of Marc Savard, they are looking like a better team, but this may all change should the Flyers win tonight in Wachovia Center. By the way, isn’t it time for that arena to get renamed?
- Elsewhere in the news this morning, it's been reported in various media outlets that Olli Jokinen is set to sign a contract with KHL's Dynamo Minsk. I'm not sure he realizes the magnitude of shock he'll experience when he moves to Minsk, Belorus from New York, but at least he'll be relatively close to Finland, and likely making a lot more money if he stayed in the NHL. He won't have to deal with the media pressure of Calgary or New York either. What a downfall of a once promising player. Remember those sweet times two years ago when many Sharks fans were suggesting Marleau for Jokinen trade?
- Several reports out of Detroit stated that Nicklas Lidstrom may retire at the end of the season. I suppose I shouldn't be shocked seeing how he just turned 40, but he's still no. 1 defeneseman on one of the best defenses in the league. He said he'll address the media on the topic when the season is over. He still has a year remaining on his contract. Lidstrom won everything there is to win in hockey, and in some instances, more than once. If he decides it's time to call it a career, the league will not be the same without him.
- 2010 IIHF World Championship of hockey is kicking off in Germany on Friday, with USA taking on Germany in an opener that is taking place on Veltins-arena where soccer club Schalke 04 normally plays. The game is sold out to a world-record number of hockey audience of 76,152. Most rosters look nothing like those who played at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Not sure how good are Team USA chances, seeing how Jack Johnson has been named a captain. Canada's full roster is here, and among notables includes Correy Perry, Steven Stamkos and Steve Ott. No typos here, yes, Steve Ott. Russia is looking to win third world championship in a row, and partially redeem itself for the embarrassment of the Winter Olympic Games. All eyes of the country are on them and on Coach Bykov, who's job will be in jeopardy should Russia fail. The notable players on their roster include Alex Ovechkin, Ilya Kovalchuk, Alexander Semin, Denis Grebeshkov and Alex Frolov, and no Alexei Semenov.

There’s already nine Wells Fargo Centers out there. Two others have “Wells Fargo Arena” instead.

Pierre McGuire was on Jim Rome is Burning. He brought up an interesting point about the Sharks. After that Game 3 loss to Colorado, the team has rallied around each other and have a belief in each other. He also gave McLellan credit for never panicking.

After all of the outrage of game 2 against the Wings or any dives that may have happened against the Avs, it still doesn’t hold a candle to your standard FIFA league soccer game.
Any game where the refs are tougher than the players isn’t a sport I can watch.

So true
Let’s just say Carrie Underwood, Hillary Duff, and Elisha Cuthbert would be the fuglies in a group of soccer WAG’s, and those three are mighty fine catches themselves.
Yeah, I knew the complaints about diving were going over the top when people started comparing it to soccer. When they start bringing out stretchers on the ice, the player is put on it, it is wheeled to the tunnel, and then the player gets off the stretcher and takes his next shift, thats FIFA level diving. It’s IMO the #1 problem with soccer, ahead of the lack of parity in the Euro leagues and lack of offense in the world cup.
Diving and lack of offense
Both solvable by instituting unlimited subs.

Further proof that Rome can only hit softballs
It’s easy to criticize soccer. I mean, if you let the Europeans and Latin Americans run anything, of course it’s going to degenerate into garbage. Turn the game over to people who give a shit about it instead of just wanting to make a metric fuckton of money off of it.
Rome is a joke. He’s Howard Stern, except he talks about sports.

But they care only that the game exists, not that it be at its best.
Ask anyone in charge to consider things like replay, removing offsides from the game, unlimited substitutions, a salary cap, or anything that might open up the game and make it more competitive and help weed out diving and flopping, and they’ll laugh at you and say you have no appreciation for the beautiful game.

I know you hate the Crosby comparisons
But look at the Pens for reference. Crosby’s first postseason, when they got dumped by the Sens, Crosby was playing on a broken leg. Malkin and Crosby (and Staal, and Fleury and the rest of their young core) had to lose in early rounds and ultimately in the Finals before Malkin was able to put together a complete effort.
Ovechkin takes a lot of heat for being who he is, but I gotta imagine that him, Mike Green, Backstrom and Varlomov are going to learn a whole lot from this. Semin is sorta anyone’s guess, but the rest of that team, I think they’ll get over the hump.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Ovechkin is still young, but do keep in mind he’s been losing in every possible tournament since he came on a scene as a 16 year old. The only trophy he has is 2008 WC gold medal.
I still love watching him play, but there is no doubt in my mind that that Crosby has a bigger impact on the teams he’s on, and hence, in my mind, he’s a better player.
Never thought I’d say this.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
In terms of Worlds
I’d chalk it up more to the fact that there’s not enough discipline around him.
Outside of Malkin, I can’t think of a Russian forward in his age group that could play the kind of game that the Crosbys, Getzlafs, Morrows, Pavelskis, Parises and Staals of the world can play.
And I think we all know about the defense.
Ovechkin plays the long shift where he occasionally drags. On a Russian All Star team, or playing in the Southeast Division, that’ll fly. At the higher levels, not so much.
If he ever plays for a coach who shortens his shifts and makes him more defensively accountable, I think he’ll get over the hump.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
It’s true. I’m sure they’ll learn from this. If they’ll finally find success next season is anyone’s guess.

I'm unsurprised Ott is on Team Canada's roster
Guy is a dirty dirty pest, but unlike Avery, he’s a legitimate player. There’s a reason Dallas loves him. He does his job, and he does it well. Plus, with all the talent still in the playoffs, no reason why a guy of Ott’s caliber doesn’t at least merit a look.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
It sounds like Canada had a hard time putting a competitive roster together. Where is Morrow for example? Or Niedermeyers? Or any of the Flames?
Same is true of USA – no Parise, for instance, or Pavels.. never mind.
I suppose that’s true of most teams except Russia. The tournament will have the weakest star representation in a while. But that’s not unusual for an Olympic year.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
I can't help
But taste a little bitterness in my mouth when I see/hear/read people who just loved to hop on the “let’s all laugh at the sharks” bandwagon in past years (and even this current year) all of a sudden be on board as if they have always been loyal fans. Fuck ’em! Our boys are winning this for us, the ones who have stuck with it and truly know the pain and the subsequent joy of being a Sharks fan.
Last night when the game ended I felt a definite connection to all my fellows.. knowing just how much that win meant and what a monumental shift we have witnessed in our beloved team. Actualized, confident, and making people eat their words as they become the championship team they were meant to be.
Go Sharks.
Personally
I hope that for the rest of this spring and into the summer, the Sharks don’t give a shit about me, or anyone else but each other. It’s how they’re going to get it done. The haters, the bandwagoners, the naysayers, the pessimists, the downers, the irrational and the zealous; not one of them can step on the ice and do anything about getting this team further on this journey.
That’s purely up to them, and it’s why I am damn proud to support them. Whatever else happens, I am proud to stand behind this team because they care about each other, and they go out every game and put themselves in a position to win through hard work, dedication, skill, and belief.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
It’s always fun when your community pulls the whole “We love the Indians” montage from Major League.
Sure, at first you’re thinking, “Hey, bandwagoners, get the hell away from my stuff!” But as your team wins games and you’re at a sports bar and every TV is on the game and every person is watching as if they’ve been fans their whole lives, that is just so much fun. And it only gets better with each round.

Add him to the wagon. He’s one of the first to always
a) rip on the NHL generally, ignore the Sharks until the playoffs
b) rip on the Sharks when they’re season’s done
Granted this seems to be KNBR’s general policy, although Fitz & Brooks and Ralph & Tom do seem to at least somewhat regularly pay attention to the Sharks. But just heard Bruce on the radio just now talking about how they’re getting ready to ____ Detroit. I just want him to shut up. Can’t believe he has an afternoon show now.

Yeah, I don’t ever listen to KNBR unless it’s to catch a Giants game. I have Sirius, and I spend a fair amount of time on Sports Express, the CBC’s equivalent of ESPNews. It’s awesome because:
a) They spend a fair amount of time discussing all things hockey
b) There are no commercials
c) Did I mention they talk a fair bit about hockey?
d) They air HNiC Radio every day, and the repeat starts right when I get out of work
e) They talk a lot about hockey
f) They offer really quality highlights, analysis, and commentary about all of the leagues (NBA, NFL, MLB, etc.).

winning cures all but...
I ain’t no bandwagon fan; jumbo has 2 huge goals and a really nice pair of assists but he still floated 4 or 5 passes to his own blueline leading to breaks the other way. Patty potted a huge one in OT but still looks like he is on 1 leg and someone took both of Heater’s legs. Has Blake put a shot on net in the series?
Up 3-0 and everyone is acting like its christmas. I am all “Go Sharks” like the next teal blooded fan, and I was calling for them to exorcise their Detroit Demons, but they haven’t finished anything yet.
The wins are big, I am stoked for tomorrow, and its sweet to be a fan in San Jose but I would be a hypocrite if I didn’t point out that this team has had some big breaks go their way in a series that could be a few bad bounces from looking totally different.
'It's amazing the clarity that comes with psychotic jealousy.'
For sure
But like I posted earlier, Blake was +3 last night. He’s doing something right in that vein. Heater is likely injured still, but I think we knew this. I hope Patty is injured, because otherwise, I have no explanation for his play at times. If the issue is between the ears, well, that’s nothing new for him. He has good career playoff numbers for sure, but in the past, when he’s gone away, the team has suffered. This team MIGHT be deep enough to overcome that, but we’ve already gone 7 wins into the post season. I don’t know how much more we want to tempt fate when it comes to his performance.
This team is awfully good, but we can’t afford to have ANY passengers.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
I’m definitely not complaining but if they had lost the last two the mistakes would be under the microscope.
good teams overcome and as critical as I am of Jumbo and his hot cold passing, he has been very visible this series. He hasn’t put a stamp on it like a Crosby or even like Pavs in the last series, but he still has one more game to complete the statement.
'It's amazing the clarity that comes with psychotic jealousy.'
I reckon people are still pinching themselves now anyway.

I have a question regarding Sharks merchandise
Where can fans get some of the cool things that are displayed by attending fans? Everywhere that I go, online, I see just the basic jerseys, t-shirts, hats, and so forth. I’d like some full color decals of the full Shark logo, even with the shield would be nice. They’d go great on my “dark teal” vehicle. Also, lapel buttons of the full logo, for my jacket. Black full-logo jacket in my size. The ones online are for Large on up. You get the picture. All I have currently is a worn-a-couple-of-times 15 year old hat with the old logos.
I’ll check back later on to see if anyone can show me good links to the good stuff that’s sold at the games.
Oh, and Yahoo stores, NHL stores, Amazon, and eBay don’t have things I’m interested in, at least at the time of this writing.
Thanks in advance to the greatest hockey fans on the planet! Go Sharks!
"Nice Save!" --Nabby, to Blake
The ideal crucible.
This series has been the ideal crucible for the Sharks.
They learned in the first series to never take anything for granted.
They learned that they were a team that could overcome.
They learned that the Hockey Gods held no sway over them this year.
This series they learned that they have nothing to fear.
That hard work can overcome the hardest struggles.
This is the next test. They stand like a gladiator in the middle of the forum, their foot firmly on the windpipe of their defiant foe, sword in hand; the crowd screaming “Finish him off!”
Can they do it? Will they plunge the blade, or will they allow the victim a shred of hope, enough room to breath a few more times and look for an opportunity.
4:30 tonight. Be there.
