Johan Franzen and Detroit Stall San Jose in 7-1 Victory

The two teams that were playing in Detroit tonight entered the game with two very different goals in mind. One team wanted to continue building on all the good things that happened to it since the playoffs began. The other team came in frustrated, but desperate, with just one mission-- to survive to live another game. In the end, a more desperate team prevailed, as the Red Wings shocked the once confident Sharks team in a one-sided 7-1 victory.

Nothing in the first five minutes of the game indicated that the game would be so lopsided. In fact, the Sharks dominated that stretch. Early on Detroit got penalized for too-many-men on the ice and the Sharks answered with four shots on that power play, with nothing but Howard preventing the first goal in the game. As the penalty expired, the Sharks continued to pressure on the forecheck, and a turnover in the neutral zone resulted in a 2-on-1 breakaway with Logan Couture carrying the puck into the zone and Torrey Mitchell on his side. Couture decided to do what we've seen the Sharks do most of the time in these situations during the playoffs-- take a shot on the net. In hindsight this might have been a good opportunity to pass, as Mitchell was wide open. Howard caught the shot by Couture, and the score remained tied at 0-0.

The first trouble came as Dwight Helminen took the tripping penalty off the faceoff, putting the Red Wings on their first power play of the game. With Todd Bertuzzi effectively screening Evgeni Nabokov, Johan Franzen shot from the blue line, and the first of many pucks entered the Sharks goal (Franzen would end the night with 6 points-- 4 goals and 2 assists). Huskins stood nearby and frankly, I'm not sure why or who he was covering because he made no attempt to even touch Bertuzzi or his stick.

And then all hell broke lose.

The Red Wings attacks kept coming one after another. They were winning most of the faceoffs, they kept taking the pucks away in the neutral zone, and they took advantage of every miscommunication or error generated by the Sharks who were on the ice at the time. The worst part-- every scoring chance Detroit generated resulted in a goal. Five minutes later the scoreboard indicated 4-0, with Franzen scoring the second fastest hat trick in Stanley Cup playoffs history.

A quick goal by San Jose might have changed the mood on the ice, but it did not happen. Instead, Detroit scored again and the team left to their locker room with score of 5-0 in favor of the home team. In the players minds, and in our own, Game 5 was over. The remainder of the game saw Thomas Greiss getting some good practice time, a few scraps, and a whooping 23 penalties called. Both teams knew that the series will have to continue in San Jose on Saturday.

It just may be that the Sharks needed this kind of loss. One of the concerns that many of us had about sweeping Detroit in a four game series was that the team might get into the Western Conference final with too much confidence. They would have too much rest before playoffs resume next week, and perhaps the coaches would feel that they would not need to change anything, because the Sharks are playing their best hockey of the season.

This loss puts these notions out of the window. The training staff has to go back to the drawing board and reanalyze what went wrong in the Game 4. The players have to refocus, as they were just reminded how Detroit can play in elimination games. The level of desperation shown by the opposing team is not going to go down when the series resumes on Saturday. This will still be yet another elimination game for Lidstrom and company.

Nights like tonight do happen, but the Sharks are in a position where they can say, as did Dan Boyle in a post game interview, "iI's just a loss, and we'll treat it just like any other loss." They still have at least three more games to earn a win, although I'm sure no one wants to come back to Detroit again this spring.

But one thing is certain-- there is no easy road to the conference final. The Sharks will have to leave everything on the ice if they want to advance.

We have already seen them do this more than once during playoffs.

When the Sharks win on Saturday, we can all laugh about this game in hindsight, and I can laugh at everyone who doubted my Sharks in 5 prediction. And the boys will still get a good amount of rest and recoup time.

Sigh, tonight still makes me want to puke, though.

Sharks lead this series 3 - 1!

They did the Detroit fans a favor and let them see Nicholas Lindstrom win one last time in front of them at the Joe.

Come Saturday, they will watch him give his final handshake in a Red Wings uniform.

Still can’t wrap my head around the idea that Lidstrom might retire. Dude plays like he’s twenty five.

He literally has at least one more year in him as a top pairing defenseman. If he wanted to go the Chelios route, as suggested above, he could probably get into Gordie Howe territory playing in a reduced role.

I always hear the “go out on top” thing, but it just seems so strange when a player actually considers it.

On the other hand, I can’t imagine the league without him. He’s always been here since I fell in love with the NHL.

Recently I read a post I was ready to applaude

It ended with a note to DRW fans, that if they’re to bask in recent success they should also embrace their FULL HISTORY – much of which encompasses a lengthy period of futility before Stevie Y and company finally broke through. Too many of them (by birth or by bandwagon) have only recently embraced the Wings once they became the most successful franchise in all of pro sports. They don’t understand true heartbreak.

I agree. “Their time is done. It’s over.”

haha seriously

In comparison to 29 other clubs, Wings fans have relatively little to wimper about over the past decade+. It would be like Paris Hilton crying over an ill-fitting haute couture dress for the red carpet.

Regarding my initial statement, there are indeed long-time DRW supporters who remember the long Cup drought and early 90’s chokefest – but again, I mention the teenagers (too young to remember/care) and the bandwagoners (success!) who unfortunately bark the loudest and make me want to roll up a newspaper and bop them on the nose. Again, they do not understand true heartbreak. Just as Paris Hilton likely doesn’t understand the plight of true poverty. heres a funny little fact for you guys: of course the habs have us all beat with number of cups, but this is between the leafs and wings:

24 Detroit Red Wings 11 wins 13 losses .458 win %
21 Toronto Maple Leafs 13 wins 8 losses .619 win %

we are that close to second in cup wins

Have to tell you

I appreciate each and every classy Red Wings fan I meet – they go a long way in convincing me that the fanbase isn’t as awful as I would otherwise believe.

I’m a Yankees fan, which is the baseball equivalent of being a Red Wings fan, so I understand your love of the Winged Wheel hatred – it’s easy to sit back and laugh. The Sharks are like the pre-2004 Red Sox (minus the World Series wins in the Ruth-era) = we curse and curse the Red Wings for their success, which we so desperately want to emulate.

Oh, and the Production Line-era of the Red Wings’ history gives me goosebumps. Glorious history right there.

I’m hoping you guys go to the Eastern Conference in the next three years, not just for the obvious reason, but because it should reignite one of the greatest hockey rivalries of all time = Detroit-Toronto. The last realignment really screwed that up.

You should see how many times the Wikipedia page on the rivalry has been edited – it’s hilarious. Red Sox fans actually put in that their team showed “dominance” this past decade. Pffff…

Best non-SJ arena? You’ll hate me for this – American Airlines Center, home of the Dallas Stars. Luxurious in the extreme. Close runner-up = the new Prudential Center, home of the Devils. The area it’s in is dodgy as all hell, however.

Worst arena – Nassau Coliseum, where the Islanders play. Apologies to Dominik, but we’ve talked about it and I think he agrees with me.

Thanks for the recap

This is one reason why I’m not a working journalist/blogger because I often go MIA for a few hours after a game like today haha.

The last (and only) time the Sharks were slapped with a 7-1 losing decision in the postseason was back on April 28th 1994, Game 6 in Detroit. Two days later, with all the intensity and pressure surrounding a Game 7 in enemy territory, the Sharks answered with a 3-2 victory to advance.

Shake it off and end the series at home in Game 5!

Win 2 at home, split on the road, win at home, series over. That was always the formula for my Sharks in 5 prediction. And it’s right on track.

Really, the only super shitty part of this is how bad the Sharks looked tonight, and the fears it might be a harbinger of things to come. I mean, would we feel this lousy had the Sharks played pretty well, and lost 3-2, or 4-2? I doubt it. It’s the 7-1 drubbing that’s gotten inside of our heads. Let’s hope the players are stronger…

I hate when the Sharks lose.

But with an ass whipping of this magnitude I just went numb about 4 goals in and then didn’t care anymore. My hopes of a win were crushed so quickly that I never really had a chance to build up the true possibility of a sweep.

If we had lost a close one I’d feel much worse. I felt absolutely wretched after game 3 in round 1. True the overall situation was worse, but I was incoherent for hours after that one, this one I just didn’t care after the first ended at all.

In my mind, a close loss wouldda meant the Sharks didn’t completely shit the bed, and there were things to build on going home. There is nothing to build on from this game…other than Greiss got some playoff experience (and held the fort pretty damn well, actually). I just worry about what a loss of this magnitude means going forward.

I think this loss will be easier for the team to put behind them.

They, as a team, collectively shit the bed. It’s not a gut wrenching loss, it’s a humbling loss, which, after 6 wins probably doesn’t hurt that bad.

I’m being overly positive, but I can’t imagine that they think this is how they play as a team or will let it get to them. I expect them to rebound, or overcome, like they have all playoffs.

I’m not even remotely close to panic right now. Maybe Saturday, but not at all right now.

Some cliches are cliche because they are true

Phrasing what you said a different way, momentum is all about how your team responds to a given situation.

I do believe momentum is a real phenomenon in games, and sometimes in series (See Edmonton, 2006), but it only works if the guys on the ice respond. You see sometimes a hit, a fight, a strong shift or a goal creates “momentum,” which is just a fancy way of saying someone inspired his teammates with his effort and the rest of the team elevates their game to match.

For the Sharks to “reverse” the momentum, it’s all about belief. Given the emotion and composure we’ve seen from them prior to game 4, I have no doubt that they CAN reverse the momentum. But, it’s all about how the actually respond on the ice.

OK

I still think there is some kind of game to game momentum within series as well as shift to shift momentum within games.

But like Elvis is saying, it’s all about the players’ mentality. I think after a bad loss like that there is gonna be some pressure, some bruised confidence. It’s not necessarily overwhelming, but it’s there no matter what they say.

Do I think they can get through it and show up big tomorrow and win the series? Oh course I do and I think they will. However, I would have liked it if we’d already overcome that pressure as in the possible scenario when we had the bad loss Game 3 and then had a big show in Game 4 to win it.

That also would have done some to slow down the Red Wings confidence, even though I realize they’re pros and probably aren’t gonna be too heavily affected by something like that.

Just my preferences for how things would have worked out.

It could be seen as an opportunity for the Sharks to prove, yet again, their stones.. If they rebound tomorrow and win then losing 7-1 didn’t matter much and the Sharks proved they have what it takes…

Call me a Pollyanna

but I don’t feel lousy either. Shit I had the broom out until about 11 mintues left in the third lol. They had a bad game yes indeed. A real stinker. Will it repeat itself? I just don’t think so. I have a feeling Nabby’s gonna be standing on his little Russian head on Saturday. No one is harder on Nabby than Nabby…and let us not forget the force that is the Big Pavelski…

The positive things the Sharks have been doing has given me a confidence in them I never had before. Sure, there’s still the little nagging doubt, so many years of disappointment will do that to a person, but it gets smaller and smaller as these games go on. I look at last night as a hiccup, nothing more. It’s just a loss so let’s get over it and win on Saturday! One more game, that’s all we need! We eat adversity for breakfast!! GO SHARKS!!

I was talking to my Wings co-worker today and telling him the pressure was on us more so on them cause we would have to hear all the choke crap that comes with not winning the series. And with my Sharks co-worker we were discussing just this sort of game. Worried that it was on the horizon.

But … given this game, whatever. Sharks in 5!! (okay I’ve been saying 6 but I’m leaning towards they are coming out pissed on Saturday and will finish this off)

No point in beating around the bush. The Wings came out hungrier, more passionate, and more determined. They treated this like a must win (which it was), and the Sharks didn’t. I think it’s easier said than done to match the desperation of a team that’s teetering on the brink of elimination when it’s not truly a must win for the other squad. A team as proud as the Wings was not going to let themselves be swept, and though I guess I was mentally prepare to accept a loss tonight, I definitely wanted and expected it to be closer.

As said in the great recap, this could actually be exactly what the guys needed: a reality check and a kick in the ass. A reminder that this isn’t a movie, and you can’t cruise to the SCFs solely on the euphoria of taking a 3-0 lead on public enemy #1.

All that said, I’m not particularly worried. This team has already demonstrated they have the mental tenacity, drive, and desire to win necessary to succeed in the postseason. Boyle’s postgame quote really summed things up.

Here’s to a rowdy game 5, and go Sharks!

I hope so

If I recall right, of the 8x Detroit has fallen into a 0-3 series hole, they’ve obviously failed to advance, forced a game 7 once and then got swept out of every other series. This time, they’ve managed to avoid the brooms in a BIG way, so kudos on that…but now it’s time to die in the hostile confines of the SHARK TANK this Saturday. It ends in 5.

That was extremely hard to watch....

It was an exercise in self control for me, as I literally wanted to start throwing furniture at the television. Sure it’s just one game and we still have the upperhand, but these reminders of our past failures against Detroit keep running through my mind, and I struggle to keep my thoughts positive that this is a new Sharks team that has shown resilience and the ability to overcome. Nobody can say they weren’t expecting the Wings to come out guns blazing, but that was truly an embarrassment. It was almost as if every goal scored took several minutes off the clock, as It was “The Mule Show” all the way, and it sucked seeing him make the record books instead of us making the history books. Once they scored goal 4, you pretty much knew our boys were out of the game. I think the goal off Cranky’s skate pissed me off the most for some reason. I know it wasn’t entirely his fault, but the fact Nabby let that softy in, just like game 3. You also can’t really blame him entirely for tonight’s loss, because really the team as a whole just didn’t show up. I am sorta glad that it’s going to a Game 5 though, because if I can find a ticket I plan on being at The Tank to cheer the boys on and say goodbye to the octopi. Let’s remind them why we’re the toughest road arena to play in the NHL damn straight!!

I said I dreamed that we’d win the first two and split in Detroit (of course we won the fifth) but I thought that dream was too good to be true. Sure, we got our asses blown out 7-1, not exactly how I envisioned it, but here we are, up 3-1 headed back to the tank. I couldn’t have honestly asked for more before this series started, I’m still excited about this team and I can’t wait for Saturday.

Sharks need to come out strong in game 5

just like they did in game one. Came out with a roar, then. McClellan was right, this game was a spanking. But spankings are supposed to be learning experiences. The Sharks supposedly flew back to SJ right after the game, where Det was supposed to fly out on Friday. McClellan and staff will be putting our Sharks through some good practice drills on Friday, as well as drill some desperation into the team.
I think the Sharks can come back and win game 5, if they come out strong. Own the game from the 1st puck drop (throw).

Players are going to be interviewed after plays or scores or games, etc, but, I really wish that Couture had kept his mouth shut about Howard’s vulnerabilities. It gave Howard a chance to be aware of them and to work on them. Give out that info to your fellow players, not to the public. Of course, this would be for the Sharks on their offensive side of the ice, and had nothing to do with their defensive side of the ice.

There are waaay too many professionals behind the bench and in the video room, breaking down every nuance of the game – from their own weaknesses, to the vulnerabilities of their opponent. What Couture said to the media was nothing but the tip of the ice berg as far as the analytical dissection of their performance.

I’m just glad the Wings got really desperate in this game and not in Game 3. We could easily be looking at a 2-2 series, but instead we were lucky enough to fight back and take Game 3.

Tonight was a nightmare but I came away with a few positives. First off is that Thomas Griess got some good playoff experience against a very hungry, aggressive team that peppered him with a ton of shots in less than a full game of play and I thought he did very well after the first goal.

Also, I LOVED seeing Joe get angry and try to goad the Wings into taking some penalties. Nichol was pretty feisty the whole night as well which I enjoyed.

Plus, I kinda expected this to be honest. For one, we all knew the Wings were not going to lie down and get swept at home. That seemed unlikely given this corp of players. I know the last time they went down 2-0 in a series they ended up getting swept by the Ducks but they ran into a hot goalie with super huge pads in Giguere that year. This group of Wings has been to two consecutive Finals and won 2 years ago. The last time we went up 3-0, was against the Avs and we lost 2 in a row and won in Game 6 to go to our only Conference Finals appearance. Hopefully that won’t happen again, as it would be very comforting to win at home in Game 5.

I hope the boys are able to regroup and overcome this latest stage of adversity in these young players. Nobody said this would be easy. Previous Sharks teams would likely wilt at this kind of stuff, but this current team seems to have a much stronger resolve and resiliency.

Agreed

This is our series to lose and one thing that always pissed me off about Nabokov deciding when he is playing is we have no real idea of what we have on the depth chart behind him, tonight we got a peek at Griess and for the most part I liked what I saw.

In previous years we would have lost in 5 to the Avs. This is a new team, this team is not going to find a new and crueler way to break our hearts. We are going to the conference finals.

Looking forward to a strong effort on Saturday. Also, cheers to the folks who kept it classy in the game thread. I had to be on the road for the third period, but I think the FTF regulars kept the game in good perspective. It’s why, win or lose, I enjoy being on FTF. I can share the highs and be talked out of the tree during the lows by cool, relatively sane people.

Not too worried

Yeah it was disappointing but its our series to lose and I’d be shocked to see it go past 5.

I thought Griess looked good aside from the obvious rust when you consider the Wings didn’t take their foot off the gas until almost the end of the game.

Nabby needs to recover from this a lot faster then he did the Olympics.

It’s a bit different though – if you think about it, it was just one bad period and the Sharks didn’t even play so bad. It’s just that everything Detroit created went into our goal. The rest of the time was just a street brawl and coasting by both teams.

This team have surprised me so many times this season that I have a good feeling about tomorrow.

Despite me watching the game with an hour or so delay.

I’m actually not all that concerned right now, just because the results of last night were so ridiculous. A loss at home in game five however, and I will not be in a good place mentally.

Nice passes by Detroit in the first period and… some lucky bounces. I think off the 5th goal (?) off of Murray’s skate Nabby could have had, but he was pretty shell shocked by then. LOL as Earl said on BoC, def. a distinct kicking motion off of Murray’s skate. NO GOAL!

that kind of goal is standard

really seems like most of them are bounces off bodies or skates. The only goal that has annoyed me is the top shelf, Pavel wrister the other night where he took Jumbo’s pass in against a few sharks and scored from the blueline.

In all fairness, the Sharks had a different kind of streak before the losing streak, and that was one of coming back. The 3 games prior, and almost all 4 games between the olympics and “the streak” were 3rd period come backs.

Not sure why I pointed that out, I just felt it’s worth mentioning.

Goaltenders are protected within their crease. The contact was initiated outside of the crease, which gives Nabokov less protection. Think of it this way— he still has rights, but he has less rights than he usually would.

Deliberate contact is never allowed in any circumstances, but incidental contact is. Franzen’s seems like incidental contact to me, but that’s a judgement call both the officials and fans have to make.

It’s one I looked at on replay afterwards as well, but there’s nothing there in my mind that would indicate goaltender interference.

Okay so I haven't posted here until this morning

So don’t think I’m a complete troll. But I have been reading FTT since the Wings advanced. I applaud the general concensus here yesterday “Don’t count your chickens” and it turned out to hold a substantial amount of water.

I fully expected one of two extremes last night, and I am grateful for the one that panned out. Tomorrow night’s game will be exciting and hopefully I’ll be able to watch it.

Either way, I am impressed with the Sharks this year. It’s been stated in other blogs that yea, SJ did have a much easier first round, but at the same time, they had that easier first round with the #1 seed which they earned.

Honestly, SHOULD the Sharks advance, I am actually hoping for them over Chicago to go to the finals as I think they’re better suited to take out the Golden Boy and his entourage.

I think tomorrow night will be the hardest for Detroit to win— The Tank should be rocking and smelling blood, and the Sharks have played extremely well at home during these playoffs when they have the crowd behind them. If the Wings pull off a victory however, things are going to get crazy.

Was yesterday’s game atrocious…yeah…but they happen. In some way, I like the lopsided loss…it’s was so ridiculous that it is easier to forget. This series has been pretty close (despite the 3-1 Sharks lead)…the Octopi got all the breaks yesterday. That’s why it’s a best of 7.

As for the “pressure” on the Sharks? I am officially over it…we are in it to win Lord Stanley’s Cup. If the Sharks can’t handle the pressure to win one game out of the next three…they are not going win the Cup. I fully expect the Sharks to come out firing on Saturday…and if they don’t…we will know that this team may not have what it takes to wi the whole thing.

The general consensus among Wings fans appears to be in favor of Stuart riding the pine, despite the added physicality he adds to their blueline. He’s been turned inside out a few times by the Sharks and has allowed his emotions (still bitter about being SJ trade bait?) to get the better of him. If Babcock says gimpy Stuart will be on the ice for Game 5, well then, the Sharks will need to make the most of those shifts. Exploit Stuey!

I’m pretty sure his wife is from the area, and I believe that he participates in the unofficial offseason practices. I chalk it more up to him accepting that he is a Detroit Red Wing and is just tired of that question being asked rather than actual bitterness towards the team.

But after this postseason, who knows if he’ll still be invited to those practices. He’s seemingly got chippy with everybody.

Here is a good point from Detroit Free Press.

For the Sharks, the night was basically a total waste, unless this was a crafty ploy to make the Wings overconfident heading into Saturday’s next game at HP Pavilion.

There was no ploy of course, but the pressure is still on Detroit, and they may be going into Game 5 thinking they got this, and this are the same old Sharks.

I’m not and neither are the Sharks. From what I’ve eyewitness from these games, the Sharks have laid on the hits on the Red Wings. The hits have taken their toll on the Red Wings, Stuart left early last night. Dats looked like he pulled a groin. We’re the bigger, stronger and equally talented team. The Sharks will win in game 5! I mean, would we feel this lousy had the Sharks played pretty "well, and lost 3-2, or 4-2? I doubt it. It’s the 7-1 drubbing that’s gotten inside of our heads."

I would much rather, hands down lose a game like this, 7-1, the to lose a heart breaker game in OT. This game does nothing for the Wings except extend the series. Anything and everything that could have gone wrong for the Sharks did. It’s hockey, it happens, move on. It is much tougher of a defeat to swallow win you lose in OT, trust. Like people have been saying, that game was over after the first period, the next two was pick up hockey. Meaning it didn’t matter. This was obvious when we tried to pull our best Dan Carcillo acts and start scrums after every single whistle.

Re-up for Saturday.

Shoot. Pass. Score.

So, I read Puck Daddy's little write up on the aftermath of game 4.

I was surprised at how he finished the story (after quoting Plank and Gray’s optimism)

Were this not the Sharks, a big loss and a 3-1 series lead headed back home wouldn’t amount to anything more than an anomaly at best and a recalibration at worst. But San Jose hasn’t earned the right to escape from a devastating loss like this without facing questions about their resolve and fortitude and …

… oh, wait, yes they have: Lest we forget they already faced them in Round 1 against the Colorado Avalanche after the Dan Boyle/Ryan O’Reilly/OT Goal From Hell debacle. So beaten-down and debilitated were the Sharks that they only won their next six games by a combined score of 24-14.

So what that Heatley was shut down or that Thornton reminded us why he doesn’t wear the ‘C’. So what the Nabokov was shelled and pulled. It’s not on them to win Game 5: It’s on Pavelski and Clowe and Setoguchi and Mitchell and Couture. They’ve been the backbone of this team in this postseason, and there’s no reason to believe they’ll go spineless in three straight.

Sure, he still puts the digs in at Jumbo and Nabby, but even he realizes that the rest of this team is still here and isn’t about to just roll over.

Bring on game 5.

I don’t see a dig on Nabby in that. That’s a statement of fact more than anything. Nabby got devastated by the Johan Franzen Show (guest-starring Todd Bertuzzi and Valtteri Filppula) , then got pulled. No snarky swipes there.

That being said, I was coming in to say exactly that. It’s odd to see Wysh come in and defend the team instead of taking the easy way out and just crapping out another “same old Sharks” opinion like everybody else.

Ever since Lemiuex

Wings fans overreact to every little bump one of their players take. Look at the crying that occurred during the Ducks series last year.

For a team that seems unstoppable in the West, they sure seem adverse to the West style of play for the most part. Did they not think there would be a few bruising teams left in the playoffs at this point? We’ve sure seen our fair share and when we don’t handle it we just hear how badly we choked. After the first period I wanted a heavy dose of the 3rd and 4th lines hitting every Red Wing and making them pay for that win. Good on Jumbo for knocking them around a bit too.

Nah, I think Halak is legit. I loved him last season…love him even more this season. I’d love the Sharks to get their hands on him this offseason, with Nabby’s contract being up and all. But I doubt the Habs let him go.

They’ll have to trade Price…who probably will be fine with a change of scenery.

Halak also wears down, so the Habs can’t expect him to go out for 70 games and carry them through a season. They’ll need a legit backup.

It’s possible. Stalock was great in the AHL this season…but he wasn’t spectacular. He won a lot of games, but he also wasn’t tops in all the goalie stats. He was helped by Worcester’s offense. It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to see him in Worcester again next season…see if he can’t dominate that league with a full year’s experience under his belt.

And not just because it means Pittsburgh’s not back in again. That rivalry is ridiculously intense – when I was in Montreal for a Sharks game, I had strangers coming up to me saying that San Jose would never, ever, ever win the Cup as long as Joe Thornton was part of the team. That’s how deep the Boston hatred runs.

How sick would it be to face Boston in the Cup Finals, if only for the above subplot?

Incidentally, Boston’s one of the 4 EC arenas I haven’t been in (been to Boston itself, though).

at least from the outside. Most arenas/stadiums look like sporting venues when you get near, but it is quite literally a concrete block. The Bruins were out of town, so I couldn’t watch a game (later found out the Celtics were actually hosting the Warriors that night), but I did visit their pro shop. IDK if it was due to Winter Classic hype, but the Bruins definitely had a more significant presence there than the Celtics, which was a pleasant surprise.

Bravo, Ivan

The picture at the top of the story best exemplifies every Detroit goal from the last two series. Oh look, surprise! Holmstrom’s ‘accidentally’ falling on a goalie again, leading to a Detroit goal.

Face it. Detroit’s over the hill, even though their old timers show flashes of brilliance. The rest of the time, Detroit’s ‘accidentally’ falling on a goalie, neutralizing him from the play. The goals that have bounced off of Murray’s leg this series are solely because Murray’s the only Sharks D-man big enough to move these mammoth fat-asses out from in front of the net. Shit happens, and you can’t fault Murray for taking a stand and doing what a defensive defenseman does best.

Granted, the Sharks diodn’t start well. And the first place you start in game 4 is in net. I’ve been crucified numerous times by Sharks loyalists this playoffs by saying ‘Nabokov is the weakest link". He’s put forth some supposed ‘wonderful efforts’ against Colorado, but if you gace 13 shots in a game….. Aren’t you supposed to stop ALL OF THEM? Flukes happen, sure. And no doubt, he’s stepped up against Detroit. But in the same vein as Detroit fans whining about Couture’s "weak goal’ in game 3, lest we forget Zetterberg’s from game 3? It’s definitely food for thought.

The Sharks definitely can’t play the whole game as if they’re on a power play, like they did in Colorado. In my opinion, that turned out to be a luxury. The only way to beat Detroit is to keep your feet moving. Pretty simple. The Sharks came back in game 3 due to one thing, and one thing only: hustle. Detroit’s skill set, as wonderful as it is, is vulnerable due to their age. They run out of gas, every 3rd period. The Sharks have surprised a lot of people by ‘turning it on in the 3rd’, but it’s the same mantra as the Coyotes series, or the Wings’ season all year long. The Wings are at their worst once they shoot their proverbial wad in the first period.

I’m fairly confident that if the Sharks can come out of the series on top, but the most telling part of every game will be the first 20 minutes. Even if the Sharks are down by one goal going into the second period, the game is as good as theirs.

After it got to 4-0 last night, the Sharks were done trying. The fifth goal was the dagger where every last Shark basically raised the white flag and made sure they stayed healthy to fight another day. Smart idea, considering the first period at The Tank will be the biggest litmus test of this series. Do I bank my whole opinion on the first period of the next game?

Yes. Yes I do.

Now, maybe once it hit 5 or 6 to nothing, you go, ok, we probably can’t win this one, but they were trying to at least get back into it. I saw no white flags, although I did see a lot of white jerseys in the box. Frustrated play is frustrating.

I made an enormous mistake in using euphemistic language – I said “excessively negative” when I meant “tone down the word selection.” This isn’t PC land, obviously, and you definitely have a point about the South Park shark-sodomy image, but words like “faggot” and “cock sucker” tend to set people off – and no, contrary to popular belief (i.e. Plank’s belief) I’m not gay.

Ok, I’ll shut up now. Thanks, Skillet.

Yes, 'cuz Dwight Helminen is useful.

Or not. At least with a period and a half left, you could let Staubitz beat the shit out of some of their big names, leaving the chance that someone with a big name in Detroit has to play the rest of the series with one eye shut and a broken nose.

Sharks have been a slow starter all season…that just can’t equal them spotting detroit a 3+ goal lead. Knowing they finish well is a luxury but they have to keep the game in range till Detroit does slow in the 3rd.

I think pretty much every hockey fan will agree with your last question

I am extremely happy with the way the game went last night obviously, but the Sharks are going to come out pretty reved up to atone for last night’s…“performance”. If the Wings either score early or can at least keep it scoreless for the first ten minutes, it’ll settle down into a normal game.

Don't Panic!

by 42jeff on May 7, 2010 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I hope it doesn't come across as we are trying to crucify you

Because from what I hear, crucifixion is painful.

Nabokov was awful in Game 2 of the Colorado series, but prior to last night, he’s been well above average, moving into the territory of very very good.

Last night, he faced 9 shots. Goal #1, uncontested screen on a power play. I don’t know a goaltender in the league that could stop that. Goal #5, bad bounce off a defender. Has happened to us before, and I’m sure it will happen again. Goal #3, rocket to the top corner. Nabby should save that, so for the sake of argument, we’ll pin that on him. Goals #2 and #4, Nabby makes the first save, a Red Wing comes in basically uncontested to put a rebound home. Could he have made them have no rebound? Dunno. That’s a tougher call.

It’s for this reason, when people throw Nabby under the bus for last night, his defenders will take issue. Is there a single netminder this side of Vladislav Tretiak who could have stopped all 5 of those goals last night? I doubt it. This was not Game 2 of the Colorado series. Nabby didn’t stink up the joint all by himself.

It’s no secret that the game plan for the Wings is to wear them down, as you pointed out. Anaheim, Edmonton and Phoenix have all proven this at some point.

But the Sharks just plain, flat out didn’t come to play last night. Detroit may be old, but there’s a reason they have the grudging respect of much of the league and they are playing this post season despite losing what seems like 8,000 man games to injury this season. They know what they are doing. If you give them an inch, they take 10 miles. And we gave them 20 last night.

An OT message to my dear FTF'rs

As I mentioned in the Other Games topic, tonight the #6 Thunder host the #1 Idaho Steelheads in Game 4 of their National Conference Final series. Puck drops at 7:30pm at beautiful Stockton Arena and tickets are as cheap as $9 to get in the door.

The Thunder will be looking to even the series 2-2 and will need all the home ice advantage they can get – which means more butts in the seats! The weird phenomenon with minor league playoff hockey is playoff attendance tends to drop the deeper a team goes. Basically, the opposite of NHL hockey. So if you’re looking for something to do this Friday night, venture out to the Arena, grab a ticket at the window (plenty available right up until game time) and cheer on the Thunder! :D

PJ over at Sharkspage/BOC also attended Game 3 of Thunder/Steelheads. He has a recap, vid and another great photo gallery at: www.Sharkspage.com

That’s very, very true. Until they finally close the Wings out, they haven’t really done anything yet. They have to win this series, get to the Conference Finals, and then, finally, we can say they’re over the hump. They’re nearly over the hump…but nearly doesn’t cut it.

by JenLovesHockey on May 7, 2010 12:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Look at it from a Wings fan's perspective...if you dare

Three consecutive 4-3 losses followed by a 7-1 victory.

Yes, you’ve now outscored your opponent by three goals but still down 3-1 for the series.

BUT…each game was very close. Each of those games had a few decisive points be it a bad bounce, a flukey off the shin pad or defenceman’s skate goal, or a shot that goes wide and starts a two on one the other way in overtime.

A blowout shows you just got jail-sexed. A perceived bad call by a ref or a bad bounce here or there had nothing to do with that.

by AppleSweetRose on May 7, 2010 11:30 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree that the choke talk won't go anywhere without winning this series

Honestly, it won’t go away unless we go ALL the way.

But, at the risk of beating a dead horse, it was one game. Yes, it was an AWFUL game, a game for which there is no excuse. Coming out THAT FLAT in a potential clinching game is just bad.

But, the boys are up 3-1, meaning they have the right to another game. Questioning their mental toughness BEFORE they take the ice on Saturday seems a bit premature. There are questions for sure. Where was the team that battled back on Tuesday? Where were they in the first 20 minutes of this game?

I’d just say, I think before we ask more questions than that, this team, at the very least, has earned the right to answer those questions on Saturday before being saddled with the labels of “chokers” or “heartless.”

by skilletboy on May 7, 2010 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions

It's fine to disagree

I think there’s a consensus among a vocal group of regulars here to try and emphasize positivity. If you remember all the first time posters who jumped on the board late March early April during that awful awful losing streak and had nothing to say except to say that Joe is soft and Nabby is a sieve and the team has no heart, the board has somewhat soured to perceived “trolling.”

So overly negative posts or those filled with foul, mean spirited language, or if posts are perceived to contain that sort of language, are generally poorly received, simply because of history.

I wasn’t on the board last season, but from the stories I hear, after the Anaheim series, that’s pretty much what it was like. So, I think there’s just a lot of preemptive attitudes out there trying to quash any of that.

FTF is a community, and people are defensive of it. That’s all.

This recap made me feel a bit better. After a loss like this…. ah. What can be said?
I was numb, and I wasn’t even watching (I had to go to work, someone called off. I almost cursed the hell out of my coworker).
Just following the twitter updates, and I just sat there in my office, numb.
Blah.
Then again, we’re still leading 3-1.
It was a horrible night, but the Sharks can prevail. They should come out ready to kill the Wings in game 5, that’s all.
Sharks in 5, and I’ll be damned otherwise!

by AppleSweetRose on May 7, 2010 11:27 AM PDT reply actions

I’m not going to forget last night, but I will move on as a fan. The loss last night helped me clear my mind a bit. The Sharks aren’t immortal or invincible, and the loss could be what helps them out in the end. Pushing for one or two more games may mean a little less rest for the Sharks, but they honestly don’t need it. They need to stay fresh and alert for the next round. Having the victory over an opponent fresh in their mind is the best way to push on to the next round.

Last night was a reminder that the team I root for is only human. They didn’t win, but I did see some good plays, and Nabby gets a bit of rest that he has rightfully deserved. He’s played hard, and he has been strong for this team thus far. I know a lot of people will blame him. Heck, i’m sure a lot of people out there were chanting the “pull Nabby” chant. Fine, do that, but remember that he’s been the one in the net helping us get victory after victory against the opponents. I believe he’ll be strong next game.

In any case, i’m still going to be optimistic for my team and poop rainbows while others scream the blame game. I’m glad to see others optimistic also.

To a lot of out-of-staters (and Canadians for that matter), being a Californian and a hockey fan is a contradiction. For a long time, being Asian and a hockey fan was one too.

Every Indian I’ve ever met has referred to himself / herself as “South Asian.”

"Asian"

Tends to refer to South East Asia, i.e. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai, Laotian, Burmese.

South Asian refers to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, possibly parts of Nepal and Bhutan, but I suspect a lot of them would consider themselves closer to Asian.

They took away the old school Pint glasses years ago

Because they were knuckle dusters:

As our Empire dwindled, as did our penchant for fair fighting, rules, etc. As far as I know, there may be chain pubs switching from glasses to whatever they choose to be least lethal. But as a nation, we will always find an inventive way to maim each other whilst drunk. This sceptered Isle, this Britain!

The more I think about this...

Detroit is the real choking team here…they are obviously better as the 7-1 win shows, and last few years of playoff runs. So haha for losing 3 games to the wimpy sharks.

I’m not sure if you guys mentioned this last night as I wasnt in most of the game thread, but was I the only one cringing when Scott and Brett pulled out brooms on the pregame show? haha…we were yelling at the TV when we saw them do that (bad mojo!)….Brett looked a little uncomfortable with his I thought….bad bad. When the Sharks started getting stomped in the first period my husband starting yelling about shoving the brooms up their asses (poor Scott and Brett….I really do LOVE what they do on the pre and postgame but why the brooms? hehe )…kind of made me laugh and I was able to find the humor in the rest of the game. But winning in 4 against Detroit would have been crazy and amazing….5 would feel pretty damn good also. GO SHARKS!

The only thing that concerns me with this 7-1 loss: Nabokov’s oft-mentioned “streakiness” — that is, that unlike the nigh-unshakable rookie Howard at the other end, that this kind of thing could really fsck up his confidence, and affect his performance here on out.

The rest of the players, I fully expect to be able to skate it off and get their heads in the game for next time — but that might not matter if Nabby’s not able to put up the wall we need him to. That said, I think he absolutely can … but, the up-and-down nature of his play scares me a bit.

well

you know its unpopular to ever criticize Nabby but I have always thought he was undersized, a little erratic, a he used to be moody. I certainly don’t dislike him but… most of the goals he has given up have been firing around off of people too so far. detroit also moves the puck across the crease to the back door like no other team and that is where Nabby’s size and sometimes slow recovery post to post makes me nervous.

if he gets some offense in front of him he should be fine. like the link i posted above though, i don’t know if any goalie could have stood up to that onslaught yesterday with out a massive team effort in front of him.

Agreed

I’m certainly not criticizing his recent play, and I definitely don’t blame him for last night’s shit-storm; the defense gave him nowhere near enough support.

I think if we hold them off the scoreboard for, say, 10 minutes or more — either through Nabokov putting up some theatrics, or by good defensive plays — then we’ll be good and he’ll get his confidence back going forward. If the Wings open it up early again, though, then I fear he’ll fall apart.

Only tomorrow knows for sure.

I still point to Game 3

We gave up 3 goals early, can’t really blame him for too many of those. But in order for us to mount the comeback, we needed Nabby to shut the door, and he did. I take that as a positive sign.

And like you said, only tomorrow knows for sure.

Plank's right

Although I’ll have to say it was good to debrief and detox from all the vitriol on the threads last night – might as well be on the main story comments board where everyone can see it.

Don't be nervous

Nabokov will be rested if they start with him. The boys will have time to look over what they did wrong and better prepare themselves for a very desperate Red Wings team. I have a feeling it’s going to be a hard hitting game tomorrow. Both teams are fighting desperately, the Sharks to move to the next round, and the Wings to just stay in it. There’s a bit more suspense in the series now, but I believe they can pull a win.

Don’t turn this into a Nabby bash dude. He helped us win 6 straight playoff games before this loss. and to remind everyone out there about how Nabokov is an awesome goalie

I know the goalie is supposed to be the best D man, but hot damn did most of our none goalie D stink last night. I’m talking stanky. Neither Nabby nor Greiss could make up for their mistakes. I don’t recall how many now, but at the time both randy and Drew commented on how Nabby had no chance on the majority of those goals, and one was to blame on Douglas Murray’s big loveable foot.

It made me freaking cringe. Nabokov was giving it his all, but when you have Red Wings slamming into you like that it’s sorta hard to keep your eye on where the puck is going.
