Winging It In Motown

On Thursday night the Sharks lost 7-1 to a Detroit Red Wings team that was fighting for their playoff lives. It wasn't pretty, but by the time the second period rolled around and Evgeni Nabokov was pulled in favor of Thomas Greiss, the next chapter of this novel was already at the forefront of everyone's minds.

And so these pages lead us to game five, where the Sharks find themselves with their best opportunity to win this series.

To say this is a must-win likely does a disservice to the lead San Jose built during their first three games of play-- I expected the battle to rage on to a minimum of seven meetings, with the potential for nine (eleven? thirteen?) games falling somewhere in between freezing Mike Ricci's body for a future playoff run and having an Orange Out at HP Pavilion. In other words, well within the realm of reason despite their seemingly ludicrous nature.

But when looking at the events that would transpire after tonight should the Sharks fail to win, it's hard to say the road would be much easier. Joe Louis Arena still carries an air of mystique despite the comeback in game three, and it's disregard for hospitality was on full display two days ago. A very tough place to play, a team who is one win away from crawling back from the dead, the potential to force an elimination game? Not what the doctor ordered. At least not my doctor.

Game seven would obviously be a madhouse. The Sharks would have failed to capitalize on three opportunities to close out the series, with the Red Wings ecstatic at the thought of completing a phenomenal comeback of historical proportions. It would be a dance with the devil. A series victory still attainable obviously, but the emotional margin for error? Razor-thin. The tension in the building would be enough to make a man go gray in three hours.

Which brings us here to game five. 17,562 lunatics screaming for blood, the roar of the home crowd calling for a series clinching victory against the demons of Detroit. The Sharks will come out on fire considering the embarrassment of game four, fueled by the opportunity to advance to their first Western Conference Finals since 2004. It is statement time for the franchise, and a brilliant chance to bury the questions about mental toughness once and for all.

The first ten minutes of tonight will be monumental-- if the team responds as I expect they will, Jimmy Howard will be under siege from nearly every direction. And if a puck or two slips by him early, the roof will cave in while the Sharks continue to swarm. But if the Red Wings survive those first ten minutes by at least breaking even, it's probably safe to say we will be in for another tightly contested game that defined the first three of the series.

More on some even strength numbers later today. Can't wait for this one to finally get underway.

Prediction: Sharks win 5-3. Goals by McGinn, Marleau, Heatley (x2), and Pavelski.

Go Sharks.

Yay Drew!

In their eyes he looks like a homer because he gets fired up when people talk negatively about the Sharks. He’s had a long history with the team as a coach and broadcaster. Definitely not a homer though. Drew is passionate about Saskatoon. I’ve always felt he was very objective and critical of the Sharks. But it is true, the skeptics/media will not be quelled until we continue to slay the demons of our past and prove differently.

Sad when in a 3-1 series lead, that a home game for the Sharks is considered the make-or-break game. But it is unfortunately and both teams will come out playing their A game. That’s why the Sharks need to bring their A+ game.

Overall I say it’s going to be very close, but a hostile Sharks crows gives us the + we need.

Hi,

I have 1 ticket for sale to tonight’s game – section 101, row 22, seat 11.

by In Bust we Trust on May 8, 2010 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions

The Sharks better be looking at it as just ONE GAME. But as fans, we have the luxury of being allowed to look at the whole picture. Obviously tonight isn’t a “must win” in the sense that it is for the Wings. But the Sharks still need to end this series tonight. Another loss, and all of a sudden the Wings are heading home with a 2 game winning streak, the Sharks have to travel back to the Eastern timezone to a place where they’ve now only won NINE TIMES in their history. Can they win a game 6 in Detroit? Yes! Is it likely? Probably not. And then you’d be looking at a true must win, against a team that had just clawed their way out of a 3-0 hole. Not good.

This is all a rather verbose way of saying “I disagree.” I think the Sharks do have to win this game tonight…both because its their best chance to wrap us this series, and for setting us up as well as we can for any potential playoff future this season.

This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.

I’m disgusted because I’m going to have to miss yet another game. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I will be at a Mother’s Day dinner during at least the first half of the game. Luckily, the restaurant’s in San Mateo and I’m pretty sure they have a flatscreen or two at the bar.

In any case, I think we can all agree that the first few shifts will do a lot to dictate the rest of the game. I know you already pointed this out in the preview, Plank, but you can never reinforce that enough! Look no further than the Franzen show in the first period of game 4. I’m not going to make some lengthy post, however, as we all know that the team has just been further galvanized after Thursday, and they’re going unleash the fury from the opening stanza.

Danni for a girl

has too much of a porn association (Danni’s Hard Drive). I tend to discourage naming daughters after porn stars.

by JenLovesHockey on May 8, 2010 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I think there’s a famous porn star with my first name. I really haven’t found that to be problematic in the slightest. Spelling, on the other hand…

Going to be watching UFC on the big screen, with the Sharks game on stream.

Wings fan here, just wanted to say that’s some pretty damn good writing. I’ll know how this game will go as soon as I see the refs. You guys need a defensive answer to the Zetterberg-Franzen-Bertuzzi line though. I can’t believe Babcock didn’t think of this line sooner.
