What the Sharks Really Need to do
Key Moves
Re-sign..
- Patrick Marleau - After a 44 goal season and a good playoff performance Marleau did everything he could to shut the critics and keep his job here in San Jose... Although he WILL have to take a pay cut im sure it wont be a problem..
- Joe Pavelski - An amazing playoff run only adds to the tremendous value Joe Pavelski brings to the table... Sign him at all costs..
- Devin Setoguchi - Key words here are TALENT and POTENTIAL... How old is he again? Oh ya 23... Plus him, Pavelski and Clowe will have even better chemistry next year than this year... You dont fix what isn't broken...
- Manny Malhotra - What an off season aquistion by our GM.. Malhotra embodies everything a 3rd line center should be... Kids, take notes..
- Scott Nichol - Man I used to hate this guy.. Remember when he tried to fight Joe Thornton? Lol he is a true Shark... Another great addition to an already great team..
- Rob Blake - Depends how cheap he will sign for
Let Go..
Evgeni Nabokov- One of my favorite Sharks all time.. Arguably the best in the buisness.. But we must realize that many other good NHL teams have shown that they can win a cup without an expensive goaltender.. I know its hard but we must move on....Niclas Wallin-Definitely a quality individual with lots of character but not a good fit for a puck possession team..
Trade...
- Doug Murray for a pick or two
Free Agent Signings...
- Dan Hamuis
- Marc-Andre Bergeron

I like Weber
But I don’t think Nashville would be willing to trade him and a third (But again, that’d be great for us)
However, what about lines that look like this:

That roster looks pretty good.
And it seems reasonably realistic as well. Michalek/Vlasic seems like a great shutdown pair.

I don't know if that would be enough.
It would probably have to include someone like Ferreiro and definitely would have to include a clip.

Pricing, I see what you did there.
I think it will take a lot, but not too much. It’s definitely going to have to include a high end prospect.

That’s pretty good but it’ll probably take 4 mill each to get Hamhuis and Z Michalek; maybe if DW works some magic they might take 3.5 mill at the very best.
Marleaus cap hit might be as low as 5 mill if he signs a long frontloaded contract. Marian Hossa’s cap hit is 5.3 and there’s no reason to think Marleau wouldn’t sign an identical contract with the Sharks.
We should hang on to Douglas Murray if possible. I think i’d rather trade Ryan Clowe than Mitchell and Murray since they both still seem to be improving fairly rapidly.
Here’s what lines could look like with all FA’s getting signed at very reasonable prices:

That roster shouldn’t be that hard to put together since Hamhuis, Michalek, and Pavs would be getting signed at around full market value; and Malhotra would be getting a good pay increase as well, close to the 2 mil he was offered on the open market last season.
Welcome!
There is no way we get Weber for that little, and I doubt Nashville would trade him anyway. Philly will still need a back-up goaltender, so I am not sure if they would give up Boucher that easily. As previously stated, Hamhuis and Michalek are due for big raises this offseason and will not sign for that little.

I was following along just fine until I read:
“Douglas Murray, Brad Staubitz and a 5th rd. pick for Shea Weber and a 3rd rd pick”
Douglas Murray, Brad Staubitz and a 5th couldn’t even land Shea Weber, much less a 3rd in addition to that. I don’t think Murray, Staubitz and a 1st would pry Weber out of Nashville.
Lets see, a franchise defensemen and a 3rd round pick for a middle pairing D man, a guy who can’t get more than 2 minutes of ice time and a late 5th round pick.
It gets better when you read on and get to:
- Dan Hamuis ($2.000m)
- Zbynek Michalek ($1.250m)
You couldn’t get either one of those for that salary combined. Those are their RFA deals, they’re looking to get paid, not make the same.

1) Hamhuis is going to cost more than that
2) Michalek is going to cost more than that
3) Bergeron is probably going to cost more than that
4) I really don’t see Marleau taking anything less than 5.5m
5) Why do we need Boucher? He’s a back-up goaltender that we shouldn’t rely heavily on. I bet we could find someone in our goalie pipeline to play just as well as he does (and would be younger and getting some experience).
If you could get Weber(not that you can) why would you want Bergeron? That makes the blue line worse, Bergeron is strictly a pp qb, which you would have in Weber, MA Bergeron would be useless.
And like everyone else is saying those RFA’s are going to cost loads more than they are currently making.
Also why does Marleau get a paycut, if anyone deserves to keep making what he’s making its him.
Can we get a desiganted rosterbation post?
Or else we’re going to have a lot of fanposts about essentially the same thing.

And the cost of the defense in this post is absolutely ridiculous. Weber is one of the most valuable trade chips in this league. He’s a franchise dman on a cheap contract and an RFA after it’s up. There’s absolutely no way that Nashville basically trades Weber for Murray. It’s a straight downgrade. There is absolutely nothing that Murray does better than Weber other than maybe physically holding the puck in one place along the boards. Everything else is done at an elite level by Weber, who’s probably a top 10 dman in the league. And both Hamhuis and Michalek are not signing for peanuts.
I’m sure the FTF Staff will get one up when they are ready. Until then, it’s been pretty ok. One seems to pop up once the old thread is a day or two old…
This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Remember this day, men, for it will be yours for all time.

This is annoying. At some point these offseason posts need to merged into one
Trade for Shea Weber? I like to think Sharks fans are a little more educated than the average hockey fan. This isn’t fucking NHL 10.

Anybody can be traded for
But the cost for Weber would be astronomical.
