Um, damn...

That kinda sucks for our much touted “goalie pipeline.” Wonder what that means for Masalskis’s career with Riga, as he’s been with them for a few years now, I think.

Also…

Dynamo Riga is in Latvia. Just sayin, lol.

No, we really do. If not him, then Dan Ellis, or someone like that. Stalock is not ready for the NHL…and definately not ready to carry the team through the postseason. #rehashedargument

Ellis seems like a funny dude

but I don’t see what’s so great about him as a goaltender. His numbers aren’t that great, he’s about the same size if not smaller than Nabby, he’s already 29, and he’s not really dirt cheap.

And he’s the guy Pavelski scored his spin-o-rama goal on:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Mai7y7tU1Y

Ellis really shouldn’t have let that in.

by Khaaz on Jun 14, 2010 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Goalies have that moment all the time. Even Broduer has let in stupidly easy goals from time to time. It happens.

I suppose he could be bigger.

Speaking of Price

Here's my twitter losers

by idunno723 on Jun 14, 2010 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions

lmao

Well played. Although TBH that was an amazing move, and he didn’t score while spinning, the spin just juked the defensemen. He was then all alone with the puck right in front of the net. It’s understandable for a goalie to give up a one on none goal like that.

Seriously.

Price is fucking terrible.

lol wtf. Why do you hate Price so much? Is it just your love for Greiss that makes you hate him so?

He’s definitely a pretty good goaltender, the only question is can he be great?

by Khaaz on Jun 14, 2010 4:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't understand the circle-jerk he's been getting on here

He’s proven he’s fluky, overpaid, and at best ‘above average’. He sucks in a clutch, and everyone makes excuses for him. " But…but.. but..He’s still young’!

I don’t give a fuck if he’s wearing diapers still. Ellis is a better goalie, and costs less. Comparing Ellis to Price is like comparing an older Ferrari to a brand new Kia. Greiss has absolutely nothing to do with it. All the Price lovers here make excuses as for why he’s terrible. All I see in the sentence is “Price” and “terrible”. And TCY might preach about price until the cows come home, but I guess that’s where we’ll agree to disagree. We’re entitled to our own opinions, and mine is that doing anything for Carey Price would be catastrophic. If you recall, he WAS the starter in Montreal at the beginning of the year. He ended up riding the pine because he couldn’t stop anything, and Montreal was losing. This is the same reasoning I would get blasted for saying Nabokov was done as a Shark. I love the guy to death, but he can’t do the job at a high level anymore. When the reasoning for letting 7 goals in a game arises comes down to ‘this helmet is bad luck, I’m sold. You’re done. Price has proven one thing in the NHL: he can’t get the job done, and the only thing going for him is excuses.

If San Jose wants to win the Cup, there’s no room for excuses. Hate my opinion all you want, but you can’t deny that I’m right on that.

Price is fucking terrible.
He’s proven he’s fluky, overpaid, and at best ‘above average’

First, these are rather contradictory statements.

But, ok, I’ll try and delve into this a bit. You love Ellis, and hate Price, if I’m reading this right. The overpaid (at 1.8 million last season) Price has had the following save % over the last three years (going backwards): .912, .905, .920. Ellis’: .909, .900, .924. Seems pretty comparable…if not a slight edge to Price (behind arguably a worse team). Both have a similar number of starts. Both lost the starter’s job to someone else (Ellis was the starter until Rinne took it from him). Where is the difference that makes Ellis the “ferrari” and Price the “Kia.” I’m not seeing it.

I like Ellis, but I also like Price. And youth is a mitigating factor, since at 22, it should be safe to assume that Price has yet to reach his developmental peak, and could even get better from here. You’d have a harder time arguing that for the (almost) 30 Ellis.

And “clutch” is a fucking weak argument against anyone. Either you have talent or you don’t. And in this case, the goalies look so similar that I’d have to conclude that what you believe about one shouldn’t be much different than what you believe about the other.

Those aren't contradictory, whatsoever.

As you can see below this post, he has his moments. Every goalie does. But I’d rather have a goalie who shows up every day, instead of three games at a time. Because when Price decides to show up, he won’t steal a win, but he won’t give the game away. When he doesn’t show up, he will lose the game all by himself. That’s the nicest thing I can say about him.

In short: when he’s on, he’s ‘meh’. When he’s off, he’s godawful. “BUT HE HASNT PEAKED YET”. Great. Call me when he does, and I’ll fully support a move on him.

I like my goals like I like my booze..... Top shelf.

by GhostOfLinkGaetz on Jun 14, 2010 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions

OK, inconsistant vs. steady. Inconsistant Price had 3 starts last season where he gave up 5 or more goals, and 1 start where he was pulled early after giving up 3 goals in the first (not good). So that’s, what, 4 starts where he “single handedly cost his team the game”? More or less…

Let’s look at Ellis. 2 starts last season where he gave up 5 or more, and another 2 where he was taken out early (one was 4 goals through 2, and the other was 3 goals in the first). So that’s…4 starts where he “single handedly cost his team the game”?

Stretch it to 4 GA, add in 3 more for Price, and 5 more for Ellis.

I am really not seeing the difference here.

Price’s big problem has been consistency. The guy can get on a tare and then once he hits a bump he doesn’t recover. The guy just can’t seem to let things go when he should. He was fine until his injury this year and then he lost his confidence and never got it back. The guy would be solid in games and then when one got by him he’d soften up. Maybe it has something to do with Montreal, but it’s not like we’re much nicer to our own goalies here.

He could potentially be really good, but GOLG has a point in his cost. What is Price going to be asking for this year? I argued a while ago that he shouldn’t get more than 2, if he goes to arbitration he’d be lucky to get that. He just doesn’t have a resume that should demand starter money. You don’t pay guys based on draft position on their second contract, you pay them based on performance and measured improvement. Lately, Price has neither.

by Evilducks on Jun 14, 2010 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s the best part though. Price probably will not command a large cap hit because he didn’t have a very good season and he’s now considered a backup in Montreal. His cap hit will probably be 2 million.

I actually just discovered that SBNation has little player profiles on every NHL player with their “assets” and their “flaws”. I’m not sure who decide them but here’s Carey Price’s page: http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/54843/Carey_Price

Assets:

Is technically sound and always plays in control. Has a huge frame, and covers a ton of net. Rarely appears rattled in the cage. Plays the puck exceptionally well.

Flaws:

Has questionable mental make-up, since he has trouble handling the pressure that comes with being a star in a massive hockey market. Could stand to be more fiery.

His flaws don’t even sound that bad, and his assets make him sound amazing really. That really just reinforces what i’ve thought about Price for a while now, that he’s an awesome goaltender who just needs a change of scenery.

by Khaaz on Jun 14, 2010 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I wonder who fills out those assets and flaws because they actually seem extremely accurate for all the players i’ve looked at. They even have pages on players like Karlsson, Dwight Helminen and other lesser known players. Pretty cool.

Honestly, I think Price just needs to get outta MTL. There’s just way too much hype around him over there. Come to SJ, he’ll be fine. Less pressure and what not, and he’ll come around. I’m all for bringing Carey Price to SJ.

Well that stinks.

The goalie pipeline still should be pretty deep though. And I don’t think this confirms that Nabby would be back with the team like the rumor said. If anything, I think it confirms it’ll be Stalock and Sexsmith next year in Worcester.

Damn

Even though it’s a one-year contract, if he makes any kind of splash and does eventually decide to jump into the NHL, I can see another Gustavsson-like bidding war.

On another note, that picture really makes Karlsson look like Michael Phelps with Rick Astley’s hair. Or am I just seeing things?

by DownRUpLYB on Jun 14, 2010 6:43 PM PDT reply actions

I thought Karlsson was a RFA? Just an FYI, reports out of the KHL should be considered preliminary unless you hear from the team or the player themselves.

Saw him in practice a couple of times. He looks pretty good, but I would say more raw than Gustavsson. Hardly saw him enough to say, but if I had to make a snap judgement I would say AHL for a season, then NHL. If they keep him.

by pj48 on Jun 14, 2010 7:39 PM PDT reply actions

The problem with the KHL is that contract status doesn’t really matter to them. Doesn’t matter if they’re a UFA or an RFA, they shouldn’t be signing contracts until July 1st, when their current contract expires.

by Evilducks on Jun 14, 2010 7:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, yes, according to capgeek, he’s an RFA. Depending on his contract length with the KHL, this could just be a cheaper way for the Sharks to continue developing him. I don’t honestly think we were going to play a tandem of Greiss and Karlsson.

lol what? Is that supposed to make me like Carey Price less or more?

Cuz that play makes me like him a lot more.

He wasn’t trying to check the guy dude…he was going to play the puck, which he’s very good at doing and does pretty often, and then Cam Janssen just flew right into him. Most people considered that a dirty play by Janssen; I personally think that Janssen just didn’t have anywhere else to go, but he didn’t look like he was trying very hard to avoid him or slow down.

Either way, Price did a great job of preventing the Blues from getting a huge breakaway, and he even ended up drawing a penalty for his team. I think it also shows the heart Carey Price has by being willing to throw down with a guy like Cam Janssen who’s pretty much made his career on doing nothing but fighting.
