Hamhuis sent to the Philadelphia Flyers

So I saw that he was shipped to the Flyers for Parent and Nashville also sent a 7th round pick with Hamhuis. The flyers just massively upgraded their already pretty damn good defense, and our dream rosters just took a big hit with Hamhuis and most likely Price being gone. Considering he was really needed here in San Jose...so what are the options left for us?

Paul Martin please come to San Jose :]

Go Sharks.

Other options...

Paul Martin (yes, please!), Zbynek Michalek (ok), Henrik Tallinder (not bad), Anton Volchenkov ($$$), Joe Corvo (eh, good puck mover).

And also, Philly’s gonna need to move a blueliner to keep Hamhuis, fill their other roster holes, and be under cap…so someone like Carle or Coburn (yes, please!) could very well be availiable by trade.

Coburn yes.

Carle is meh…but Martin and Michalek are the best options out there

Martin would be perfect for us. I like Carle, but I still think Coburn will be the one shipped out, since he’s an RFA.

Although Carle has improved his defensive play since the last time he was in teal, anyone playing with Pronger is gonna look better.

Cobrun is restricted and probably available.

So that could be an option. Hjralmasson is also an RFA and is likely available as Chicago probably does not have the cap space.

Coburn would be a great pick-up

He’s got size, physicality, and offensive acumen—perfect to replace Rob Blake, plus the bonus of being younger and more mobile.

That said, I really would prefer the Sharks adding to their blueline without giving up any prospects—or young forwards like Clowe. The Flyers, with their cap concerns, would likely want picks/prospects. I’m not even sure the Sharks have anything the Flyers would want for Coburn.

by Timorous Me on Jun 19, 2010 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Coburn should be on our radar now. Also you can’t forget about Hjalmarsson. Willie Mitchell and Johnny Boychuck really interest me too.

Willie Mitchell could be a perfect partner for Boyle, (he’s a lefty too!) he’s an awesome shutdown defensemen and i hear he’s a really great leader as well, and a good mentor to younger players. He had some concussion issues for a long time but he just announced recently that he’s fully recovered from his concussion and he’s healthy again. His cap hit on his last contract was only 3.5 million and we could probably get him for somewhere close to that considering the injury issues he’s had. I think he’d be a great player for the Sharks to acquire.

Johnny Boychuk is an intersting young player too, the only question is whether his defense partner Zdeno Chara is making him look better than he actually is. He could be a quality, young, physical defensemen with a good point shot that we can sign for fairly cheap.

I’d like to see us get one experienced top pairing defensemen like Paul Martin or Willie Mitchell, and then one young talented defensemen with tons of potential like Hjalmarsson or Boychuk. Although i wouldn’t be upset if we signed Michalek. (or if we got Volchenkov at a reasonable price of course)

Wow - and Arnott's going to New Jersey

Pretty busy day today for a Saturday in the Hockey world…and STILL NOTHING on the Sharks front :(

Go Sharks!

A lot of it was because they wanted to respect Rob Blake and give him his time alone in the spotlight. I’m sure there will be something coming soon, especially within the next week. After all, the entry draft is soon, and there’s usually a lot of news that comes from that!

Maybe on the internal UFA front…but not dealing/trading probably more has to do with the fact that DW just hasn’t seen any trades that were worth it. Waiting on a retirement announcement to make any trades would have been foolish.

That is so true

Perhaps some internal deals have been made, just not announced. DW likes to wait until after the NHL approves contracts before announcing them. Other teams seem to just blurt them out as they happen, before the ink is dry.

I'll bet money that Montreal wanted Couture

And DW said no.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Probably Cooch and another mid-level prospect.

I think I’m okay with DW saying no to that.

Does this trade even mean much considering Hamhuis is still a UFA?

It’d be funny to see Hamhuis sign somewhere else after Philly gave up a promising young defensemen and a 7th round pick. It seems like a dumb trade for Philly.

by Khaaz on Jun 19, 2010 4:46 PM PDT reply actions

They wouldn’t have made this trade if they didn’t think they could sign him…I expect he’ll sign.

In some quotes I saw today, Hamhuis himself makes it seem like a given.

I know this is a Defenseman discussion, but I'd love to see BB RW Miroslav Satan move over...

…strictly because seeing “SATAN” on the back of a teal sweater would just be so damn cool.

from what I know I’d say Philly got the much better end of the deal. I never thought Parent was all-that, and Hamhuis seems really good

by JenLovesHockey on Jun 21, 2010 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions

They only traded his UFA rights, and the Predators weren’t going to keep him anyways since they’re already pretty stacked on Defensemen. It was a good deal for them imo. They kinda got something for nothing.

by Khaaz on Jun 21, 2010 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

According to McKenzie
Recently acquired free agent Dan Hamhuis is not at all close on contract talks with the Philadelphia Flyers, with all signs pointing to him not signing before July 1, when he can become an unrestricted free agent.

The Flyers could very well look to trade away his negotiation rights, much the same way they got them from the Nashville Predators.

Guess he really wants to test the market, which is his prerogative. But not wanting to sign with a Stanley Cup Finalist must really mean he’s looking for some serious money.
