With Hamhuis on his way to Philadelphia, is Braydon Coburn available?
Today, the Philadelphia Flyers traded the rights to RFA defenseman Ryan Parent and a conditional second round pick to the Nashville Predators for the rights to UFA defenseman Dan Hamhuis. The Flyers now have 11 days to sign Hamhuis before he hits the market as an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
Trades like this aren't uncommon; just last year the Florida Panthers traded UFA Jay Bouwmeester's rights to the Calgary Flames for Jordan Leopold and a third round pick. The trade gave Calgary a three day window of exclusivity to negotiate with Bouwmeester, who ultimately signed with the team before July 1st hit. Because of this, we'd assume that Philadelphia General Manager Paul Holmgren is confident he can get Hamhuis under contract before the exclusivity window comes to a close.
The exact trade for Hamhuis was explored by Philadelphia and Nashville at the 2010 trade deadline, but was axed for multiple reasons. After the season, Holmgren finally got the player he was looking for. However, that player will come at a significant cost.
Dan Hamhuis was one of the top three free agent defensemen on the market this off-season, and would have likely had multiple suitors, a list that would have included the San Jose Sharks. Hamhuis is expected to command an investment of over $4.0MM annually, and it's assumed that he'll sign with Philadelphia for somewhere in the $4.0MM - $4.5MM per year price range. That leaves them in a bit of a sticky situation, a situation which San Jose GM Doug Wilson can exploit.
Based on last year's cap ceiling, Philadelphia has just 17 players under contract with only a tad over $8.0MM in space to fill out the roster. Assuming Hamhuis will eat up around half of that money, Philadelphia is going to have to send some contracts out of town, especially if they want to bring in a better goaltender (something that has been mentioned repeatedly).
Although many believe that Jeff Carter and his $5.0M 2010-2011 salary will be sent packing, Bob McKenzie isn't so sure. Via his twitter account @TSNBobMckenzie:
It has been suggested to me that there's no chance Jeff Carter will be odd man out in PHI. More likely to be someone else. Interesting.
Being as McKenzie is one of Fear The Fin's trusted hockey pundits, we're going with him on this one. (Although, if it is Carter who's out, we'd be interested in that as well, dude is a beast) If Carter stays, where does Philadelphia free up some cash?
Talk around town is that a defenseman will be moved, as Philadelphia has Chris Pronger ($4.9MM), Kimmo Timonen ($6.3MM) and Matt Carle ($3.47MM) under contract. They also have control over RFA Braydon Coburn, who made $1.3MM last year and will more than double that number on a new contract. One of these guys has to be moved, especially with Dan Hamhuis coming into the fold. It's unlikely that Philadelphia would be able to pay a bottom pairing defenseman over $3.0MM annually and remain under the cap. That last pairing is unlikely to see many minutes, anyways, with the talent in the top four.
We at FTF believe it's either former Shark Matt Carle or FTF favorite Braydon Coburn who gets moved. Carle seems like the safe bet of the two to stay, though, for a few reasons. First, Carle really formed a bond with Chris Pronger throughout the season and into the playoffs; the pairing was very strong for the Flyers all year. Second, Carle is really the best offensive threat on the blueline; if they go with a top four of Pronger, Timonen, Coburn and Hamhuis, they become really one dimensional. We take that to mean that Carle won't be jumping to his fourth team in three years; we assume the Flyers don't want to add another piece on defense in that scenario after just adding Hamhuis and trading Carle.
That leaves Coburn the likely player to be moved, and we couldn't be happier. In fact, we proposed that the Sharks get involved in the Hamhuis to Philadelphia deal when it was proposed at the deadline. Here's a snippet:
Last night, a deal involving Ryan Parent (PHI) and Dan Hamhuis (NSH) was scrapped because Nashville reportedly wanted a forward in return. Both Parent and Braydon Coburn have been mentioned in trade speculation this week by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Braydon Coburn is a tough minutes defenseman, who plays a physical style and can be counted on to shut down opposing teams top lines. He hits, blocks shots, and works tirelessly in the corners. Offensively he is relatively unsung, but he moves the puck well up the ice with strong breakout passes, and has a very good shot from the point. He would easily play on San Jose’s power play, likely on the second unit with Rob Blake to provide a lefty-righty dynamic that would faciliate one-timers.
24 years old with a $1.3 M cap hit, an RFA in July. Would likely come in at around $3.0 M per year as his stock has dropped this season. Legitimate top four defenseman in years to come, and if paired with Marc-Edouard Vlasic, would provide San Jose one of the best shutdown duos in the Western Conference, both this year and well into the future.
- Mr. Plank, Trade Targets: Braydon Coburn
Of course, some of this argument is invalid now that Blake has retired... they won't be playing together in this life time. However, the base of the analysis is solid. In essence, the Sharks would be picking up the kind of guy that we have pined for for over a year. Although Hamhuis brings the experience, Coburn is cheaper and just went through four grueling rounds of the NHL playoffs.
With Philadelphia in a bind, the Sharks could likely pry Coburn away for next to nothing. A goaltending prospect and a late draft pick? We think Philadelphia pulls the trigger, mostly because they can't really absorb any additional salary at this point. They are going to take the best package they can get that doesn't require a dollar commitment on their end. A trade like this would also mean that Ryane Clowe, the Sharks lone trade chip, could be used in a separate deal to further upgrade the defense and add goaltending. We've talked internally about a deal for Josh Harding and Brent Burns of the Minnesota Wild, but that's another discussion for another day. A move for Coburn also wouldn't prevent the Sharks from submitting an offersheet to Niklas Hjalmarsson, but it's likely Wilson would look for another puck mover if Coburn was acquired.
The shrewd GM that he is, we assume that Doug Wilson is exploring this possibility as we type, along with many others. If this specific scenario came to fruition, though, it would go along way in improving the Sharks defense next year and for years to come. The week leading up to the draft should be crazy.
Go Sharks.

I know I’m not the lone dissenter here, but I think Coburn would be a better fit than Hamhuis would have been. I like the deal, and am ready to pull the trigger, but here are two issues.
DW has a tendency to overpay young guys, especially defensemen.
I feel DW is waiting until the draft to even think about completing a deal. What are the chances the deals we’ve been discussing here are still available?
Great write-up, though, … uh staff person. Thanks for keeping on top of developments.

Yeah this is great news imo. I thougth Dan Hamhuis was a little overated considering what people were projecting his cap hit to be. This opens up an opportunity to sign great players at good value like Coburn and possibly Jeff Carter. (who would fill Marleau’s shoes perfectly if he can’t be resigned.)
I really like Coburn...
A trade for his RFA rights would be pretty sweet, IMO.

I don't know anything about Coburn
Is he really good? Or, worth going for?
Chris Andersen could be in a porno with his 'stache. Too bad he still wouldn't know how to box out.

Haven't seen much of Coburn
But I do remember the commercial where he talked about how torched he got playing the game and kept coming back. That’d be nice to see in Teal. Young too, with a few years in the league. Are we allowed to have that kind of player??
I want Coburn. More than Hamhuis.
A team with him and Vlasic will be shutting guys down for years to come.

Don't forget about Hjalmarsson.
I posted this in the fanpost but i’ll repost it here for people who don’t check those.
Willie Mitchell would also be a great pickup if we can’t get Paul Martin.
Willie Mitchell could be a perfect partner for Boyle, (he’s a lefty too!) he’s an awesome shutdown defensemen and i hear he’s a really great leader as well, and a good mentor to younger players. He’s had some concussion issues but he just announced recently that he’s fully recovered from his concussion and he’s healthy again. His cap hit on his last contract was only 3.5 million and we could probably get him for somewhere close to that considering the injury issues he’s had. I think he’d be a great player for the Sharks to acquire.
I’d like to see us get one experienced top pairing defensemen like Paul Martin or Willie Mitchell, and then one young talented defensemen with tons of potential like Hjalmarsson or Coburn. Although i wouldn’t be upset if we signed Michalek. (or if we got Volchenkov at a reasonable price of course)
I would love me some Willie Mitchell for around 3.2 or under
If we can’t get Martin that is. I had Center Ice last year and watched allot of the Canadian teams. When he was not hurt Mitchell was a force on the ice, (we would have to make sure he is completely healthy however).

If I had my druthers we’d pick up someone younger, someone we can build with for several years. But if that’s not to happen, Mitchell would be a fine fall-back option. I wonder if, with his injury history, GMs might be a little more gun-shy than usual with him in the early days of July. He could have a few more good years in the tank to match up with our core’s best years.
Harding and Burns
I haven’t seen Harding play before really, but don’t we need a guy who can do at least 50 starts for us? The most games Harding has played in one season is 29.
I haven’t seen much of Burns either but he sounds interesting. (25 year old 6’5" 220 lb defensemen who can skate well usually do lol)
My only concern
Is that Coburn wouldn’t come as cheaply as mentioned above, because I bet there are a lot of GMs out there who would love to have him (considering age and a likely reasonable price tag compared to what some UFAs will command). So the Sharks may have to up the ante—maybe a goaltending prospect and 2nd or 3rd round pick.
Also, according to Hockey’s Future, the Flyers’ No. 1 prospect is a 20 year old goalie, Joacim Eriksson.
With Hamhuis all but locked up in Philly, I’m also joining the Coburn bandwagon. I like the idea of him being paired with Vlasic – that pairing’s potential could be at or near a Seabrook-Keith level of effectiveness in a few seasons. And they’d be cheaper, at least for now. It’s going to be interesting to see what DW does with the cap space that Blake frees up. If we do indeed manage to land Coburn for a song, Blake’s money could potentially be used to sweeten a potential Marleau offer (if I ran things it would). My only concern is, as someone else pointed out, that we’re nowhere near the only team looking to shore up their blueline in this offseason and the interest of other GMs could drive up his value. However, most teams don’t have the cap space the Sharks do (for now).

I kinda want Carle back
But I wouldn’t mind Coburn either. He had a rough year though, it gives me cause for concern.

This is somewhat OT, but
I’ve discovered tonight how much I appreciate Doug Wilson as our GM.
I looked at the Rangers contracts, and they’re disasters as I expected. Then I looked at New Jersey’s, who I assumed would be pretty good, and there are some good ones, but really $5 mil for Rolston, $3.4 for Zubrus and $2.5 for Pandolfo?
$1.7 for Huskins doesn’t seem that bad anymore.

Flyers fan here
I’ll start of by saying that, If Coburn does stay, He wont make anywhere near the $3 mill mark. If anything, It’ll be more like $1.5-$2 mill. Second, I also want to say that you may be reaching for the player your looking for. Yes, Coburn ha the potential to be one of the top D-men in the whole league, but he has degreased in production all three years hes been with us. Two seasons ago, we thought that since he was paired with Carel, that they just didnt have the chemistry. Last season, he went back to Kimmo and struggled all year. Not that I don’t think hes worth the risk, but I just cant see him being on a top line with MEV. So all that said, you could get a great player, or an average player for about $2 mill. I posted this as a fanshot over at Broad Street Hockey to see what could be a possible trade scenario, if you want to propose something, just look there.
PS, I hope you guys resign Marleau, I have his sharks player tee, and is one of my favorite players.

Thanks for the nice words.
Interesting comments on Coburn. I haven’t seen much of him, but I thought he looked pretty impressive in the SCF.
I’d do Clowe+Huskins for Coburn+3rd. But since you folks are looking to dump salary, I doubt that’ll fly.
Sorry, can't help but laugh
At the typo that led to the phrase “degreased his production.” I’ll let my imagination run wild with that one.
Coburn (along with Parent, heading to Nashville, obviously) seems to be the kind of player who might benefit from a trade—a change of scenery, a little wake-up call. At least with the Sharks, if paired with Vlasic, he wouldn’t immediately have to deal with an obvious No. 1 pairing distinction, either, since I suppose you could say Boyle-Murray has that tag for now (based on Boyle being the clearest 1 on the team). And with the ages of Vlasic and Coburn, respectively, there would be the potential for the two to grow together as a duo for years to come—something I’d love to see with the Sharks’ blueline needing an infusion of talent and youth. Or should I say, “talented youth.” Coburn would definitely fit that designation.
No real trade scenarios here, though—my opinion is that the least we’d have to give up is a 3rd round pick and an AHL-level goaltending prospect, but I’m not sure that other teams couldn’t do better.
I don't see us moving Coburn for cheap
The main feeling was that we had a solid top 4 D, of which Coburn was one of the pairs, but that after that, we were in dire straights. Coburn struggled this past year at times, but in fact, the entire team struggled. Coburn pulled it together in the playoffs and even had a game or 2 where it could be argued he was the best D-Man out there, although playing with Kimmo Timmonen is a good situation no matter who you are.
We wanted Hamhuis, but that was to make us even deeper on D, which doesn’t really make much sense after you ship out one of your top 4 (who also is after pronger, our 2nd biggest D-Man).
There is a lot to like about Coburn. I can throw this year out as an outlier for a lot of reasons, and I think your interest is well founded. He’s big and can be physical when he wants to be. He skates extremely well for a big man, and can move the puck up the ice in a variety of situations. About the only thing that hasn’t rubbed off on him from Timmonen, is the inner calm in the storm, as he can at times get a bit of tunnel vision.
Regardless, he’s a top 4 D-man for most teams.
