Penguins Trade Sergei Gonchar's Rights to the Sharks?

According to several sources, Sergei Gonchar's rights have been traded to the Sharks. This isn't terribly surprising that Gonchar's rights have been traded. After all, contract negotiations have been ongoing since November. And it was pretty clear cut that Gonchar's rights were going to be traded. But I certainly didn't expect the Sharks to be in the mix.

As a Sharks and Penguins fan, I am cautiously optimistic. There's lots to like about Gonchar, and he clearly has 2-3 more solid years to give. However, is he a good fit for the team? Does DW think he can sign Gonchar to a multi-year deal for less than the $5 million he was seeking from Pittsburgh?

More to come, and hopefully it's not just a rumor. It's not on any of the major hockey sites, but is spreading on blogs and boards.

Supposedly, the twitter source is somewhat unreliable. And I normally am hesitant from reading too much into rumors. So hopefully it doesn’t come back to bite me!

Gonchar on the Sharks doesn’t make a lot of sense financially.

Definitely. We really don’t need Gonchar, especially at anything around 5 mill. Plus we’d have to give something up in a trade for him.

I hope the rumor isn’t true, unless we signed him for 4 mill and traded huskins for his rights or something.

Just to clarify, the info came from Sport Express. I’m not sure it ran in the actual newspaper, but did show up on their web-site. Here is the link.

It’s the same as news showing up on ESPN or Sports Illustrated here.

But no certain source was cited.

I say, no thanks if it’s true. Gonchar is a second coming of Blake – good offensively, not so good defensively, plus he’ll cost more and he’s injured a lot.

I don’t want Gonchar at all. Powerplay skills aside, he’s getting pretty old and he’s never been very great in his own end. Last I checked we need help in our own end. Shutting down opposing top lines, blocking shots, controlling the puck etc. For the money it’s just not a good deal IMO.

Puck Daddy reports:

I agree with the gallery. I like Gonchar, but feel he would do nothing to resolve this team’s weaknesses. DW is known for making blockbuster trades, but smart trades— Not stupid ones for injury-prone players who are average in their own end. Again, I’m just reporting the rumor.

I'm not going to be happy

If signing Gonchar is the reason we can’t resign Patty. He made $5 Million for the past 5 seasons…He sure as shit knows as well as we do that he’s old and injury prone. Maybe we ink him for a lot less, a Rob Blake-like deal, say $3 Million. Doug Wilson has a plan.

by youratowel on Jun 23, 2010 10:49 AM PDT reply actions

I don’t even want Gonchar for 3 million. I’d take him for 1…that’s how little I want him on this team. We can do SO MUCH BETTER in the free agent market…

Bleh, supposedly the Blackhawks have traded Byfuglien, Eager, Sopel, and Akim Aliu to the Thrashers for their 24th overall pick, 54th overall pick, and Marty Reasoner and Jeremy Morin.

Sounds like an awesome deal for the Thrashers.

This means the Blackhawks now have like 5+ million extra cap space, which makes it less likely that we can offersheet Hjalmarsson successfully. =\

by Khaaz on Jun 23, 2010 2:50 PM PDT reply actions

Chicago, it appears, will be able to successfully pawn off their dregs to crappy teams in look of “stanley cup experience.” Sigh. They really want to keep Sharp and Hjalmarsson (with good reason), and I suspect they’ll successfully navigate around that and make it happen.

Chicago has tipped their hand

They’re targeting their core for keeps and willing to deal off the supporting cast. I expect them to do whatever they can to keep Sharp and Hjalmarsson, even if it means parting with the depth that got them there. Best way to stay competitive.

I’m sorry, but other than Buff, I’m not sure anyone traded today was really “depth.” They were mostly expendible cap hogs. If they can keep Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Keith, Seabrook, Hammer, Niemi, Campbell, Bolland…they’ll probably still be Cup favorites.

If they do something Huet, like send him down to the minors, then they should be able to keep all those guys no problem.

by Khaaz on Jun 23, 2010 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I might call Sopel depth as well

Defensive depth matters. He might be a bit of a pylon, but you can get effective minutes out of him, especially behind Chicago’s top 4.

You could make an argument that ANYONE would be good behind that top 4, but at the end of the day, Sopel was the one who was it.

They will have to lose at least one more of those guys

At least by the cap numbers on cap geek. And unless they go all 500K with the rest of their roster, I believe they will have to lose two. Unless Hjalmarsson signs for less than 3mil, and they are able to trade Huet, or they trade campbell, they still have a lot of work to do.

by ruben398 on Jun 23, 2010 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions

This probably has very little to do with it

but Atlanta will now have 3 players with African descent (Kane, Buff, and Aliu). Wonder if it’s also way to drum up more interest in a non-traditional market (apparently Atlanta’s population is 52% Black).

On the deal itself, damn, Chicago’s gonna have a lot more wiggle room to keep that core intact. Damn damn. The fact that they wrangled a first rounder in the process makes it that much more painful.

Sharks involved, well, somewhat
The trade (with Chi) was made possible via the Thrashers’ trade of Michael Vernace and Brett Sterling, along with a seventh-round selection in 2010, to the San Jose Sharks for “future considerations”

— from this article
and

“The Thrashers had to clear salary cap space to bring in the players they got from Chicago, so Atlanta made a another deal with San Jose, shipping defenseman Mike Vernace, forward Brett Sterling(notes) and a seventh-round draft choice to the Sharks for future considerations.”

by Khaaz on Jun 23, 2010 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions

you're going to be disappointed when i tell you what it says

but:

Recently, we passed along word that Patrick Marleau had purchased a house in Los Gatos, Calif., which is close to San Jose. The loose insinuation there was that this was a sign he’d be sticking with San Jose Sharks.

A bigger hint was dropped on Tuesday night, though. Sharks GM Doug Wilson announced in a pre-draft press conference that the team would not bring long-time goaltender Evgeni Nabokov back, and this would, on the surface, clear up a bunch of money to re-sign Marleau.

We have to caution that nothing is set in stone until the deal is officially announced, but it would appear that the Sharks have chosen Marleau over Nabokov.

by Khaaz on Jun 24, 2010 12:13 AM PDT up reply actions

and on the topic of gonchar..

they also had this to say:

There’s a rumor out of Russia that says the San Jose Sharks are trading for the rights to Sergei Gonchar, and they attribute TSN in the report. But we can’t find the TSN report anywhere, so we’re very skeptical about this possibility.

The Sharks have been looking for a blueliner after they lost Rob Blake to retirement, but we don’t see them trading for Gonchar’s rights since there are a handful of free agents on the market. In addition, it could cost them up to $6 million and, although they aren’t re-signing Evgeni Nabokov, they still have to lock up Patrick Marleau.

For now, we’ll file this one in the “very skeptical” file.

Proud member of the "Re-Sign Marleau" club.
