Around SBN: Auto Racer Jeffrey Earnhardt Excited to Make MMA Debut

Per Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) and SJSharks.com, Patrick Marleau signs a 4 year contract at $6.9MM per year while Joe Pavelski gets 4 years at $4MM per.

Great news for Sharks fans, more later.

This will shut everyone up about “Marleau is coming to my team” crap. I’ve seen some really dumb Marleau signing scenarios too.

Also, props on signing Pavelski as well.

Like Marleau was going to sign for $10 years 46 mil with a team he never played for. The sad part was they all started ripping me for saying it’s not going to happen.

Hey Hossa signed for 5.3 and Pronger signed for 4.9 to teams they never played for…

I was hoping Patty would sign for a similar number to a team/town he’s played for his whole life. =\

by Khaaz on Jun 24, 2010 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Hossa also signed for 12 years, and Pronger signed for 7 years. I’m fine with Marleau having a slightly larger contract for 4 years, and then take a pay cut after it’s done as he likely won’t be able to score 40 goals anymore. It’ll give the Sharks more flexibility in 4 years, when the team will likely be pretty different.

Yeah, 4 years is good i guess. I just think we should take advantage of the talent we have now while they’re in their prime and try to make a run at a cup or two before our window closes; and having a player like patty at something like a 4.5 million cap hit would’ve done wonders for our chances at a cup for the next 5 or so years. Although i’m confident DW can keep our window from closing completely.

by Khaaz on Jun 24, 2010 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions

DW and the Sharks have stated repeatedly that they do not like those front loaded long term contracts. I never expected them to pursue one. I’m actually really happy with the term of Patty’s contract…the cap hit will make things interesting, though (even though it’s exactly what I expected).

Not high at all – after a 44 goal season coupled with the type of contributions Patty brings on both ends of the ice, that number is completely reasonable.

Yesssssssssss!

Fantastic news. This just made my hour, day, and summer. $6.9 sounds about right – sure, he may have been able to get slightly more from another club, but not substantially more. He gets a guaranteed hefty payday for the next 4 years, and he and his family get to remain in a community and with a team that they know and love. I think objectively he made the right call. Pavs’ money was totally expected, and I’m elated that he’ll be part of this franchise for the immediate future.

I like these deals...

Marleau was going to get near 7 mil…that was a given…but to get him to agree to only 4 years is awesome, IMO. He’s not going to be worth 7 mil 4 years from now, so it’s good we won’t be tied down to the contract for like 10 years. I really, really like that.

And Pavs for 4 years at 4 million is slightly better than I had expected. I was looking in the 4.5 range…so that’s good.

Hmmm, I’ll have to go play with capgeek and see what kind of room we’re left with. Good times.

Solid deals all around

Numbers are nearly perfect for their values. Not overpaying for either, but giving them both decent chunks of change.

Wish Marleau’s deal would have been longer term though…locking him in for the rest of his career.

Personally think Manny should be the next priority, then Seto and Nichol. But where is it written you can only get one deal done at a time? Wilson will get them all in on time.

by BillytheSid on Jun 24, 2010 9:10 AM PDT reply actions

4 years is a safe bet for Patty. Odds are, at the end of those 4 years, he’ll ink one last contract with San Jose for a year or two at a lower cap hit. Highly doubtful he’d uproot his family to play one or two more years elsewhere.

Cap Geek

My guess is that Cap Geek doesn’t have it 100% right, because one of them is probably back loaded. Ortmeyer resign? What about Wallin? If we sign Wallin, do we ship out another d-man?

Front/back-loading doesn't mean a thing in regards to cap hits

Cap hits are the per/year average for the whole value of the contract.

Now, here’s hoping Seto, Manny and Nichol City get contracts before the end of the month as well.

I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t sign Marleau to a longer and more cap friendly contract. I hope we don’t regret that, especially if Joe Thornton walks next year and Marleau’s numbers regress to those they were before he was regularly playing on Joe’s line.

But Pavs contract is a good one.

by Josh Pearlstein on Jun 24, 2010 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Except that there is no way I think we’d have a viable replacement for Joe. Furthermore, assuming the cap doesn’t increase tremendously next year, he’ll probably sign for a bit less, maybe $7M. He took a very large discount on his last contract, so it would make sense for him to sign a contract at around Marleau’s value.

by tarlinian on Jun 24, 2010 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I can see that happening...

I think Joe really loves it here in San Jose. And I think his skill set is one that would not decline with age so much. So, yeah, i could see him resigning next season at a lower cap hit and staying here the rest of his career as well.

I started this offseason hoping for $6-6.5 for Patty

But the more we heard, the more numbers that were thrown out there by pundits, it seemed like higher would be necessary. I was getting especially worried about L.A., with the Lombardi connection and west coast locale—and all their cap room, which I think would have allowed them to go up to $7.5 for Patty. What a relief to have Patty back, and especially not in a Kings’ uni.

by Timorous Me on Jun 24, 2010 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions

Definitely a relief, and yes, he’s expensive, but I was worried about L.A. offering him more as well.

Sharks will unload a contract, probably Ryane Clowe and maybe Torrey Mitchell as well.

Seto will sign for somewhere in the 3.0M neighborhood.
Manny for 1.5-2.0
Nichol for 1.0-1.5

That would leave, if my numbers are right, about 9.0M to sign a D-man + a goalie.

I would have thought 3.0M for Seto

would be low too, until Pavs just signed for 4.0M.

Pavs’ 4.0M kinda sets the value for Seto.

Pavs clearly is worth more than Seto, and thus their salaries would reflect that relative value. I figured Seto would get about 75% of what Pavs gets.

it depends on how things work out in goal and on the blue line and just how close we’re gonna be to the cap.

I’ll reserve judgment on Marleau’s contract until we sign that big name defenseman.

But at first blush, I’ll dissent from the board. I don’t like that cap number at all.

Its one thing to take less then you could get on the open market which I think Marleau did however its another thing to take a pay cut, which I think asking Marleau to take would have been insulting.

FSDKJHFKSDJFHAS;LDKFH;SALDKHGSLKDGHASKFDHKJSAFH

This day is an awesome day. I’m not concerned about their cap hits right now – Doug Wilson has proven time and time again that he is a genius and to never doubt him. But let me say that Pavelski’s contract is more than fair, and Marleau’s is a bit higher than I’d like, but since it’s shorter he can take a huge pay cut after it’s over since his skill level will likely decrease.

Just think – a little less than a year ago, I was freaking out in a not-so-good way with the “Marleau to the Kings” rumor. Ugh, that was a dark day. But now I am assured that both Pavelski and Marleau will be staying in teal, meaning that I can finally get that Pavelski jersey I’ve been wanting to for the past year.

I am proud that my two clubs (Don’t Trade Marleau and Re-Sign Marleau) have been successful. My newest club probably won’t work, but is surely a cause that everyone can get behind, haha.
