Marleau and Pavelski re-sign with San Jose

Heading into this offseason, Doug Wilson's top two priorities were plain for most to see-- sign Joe Pavelski to a multi-year deal, and see if a dollar amount could be reached with Patrick Marleau that was beneficial for both sides.

And as the news dropped today, it became clear that the organization had found those magic numbers. Joe Pavelski inked a four year deal worth $4.0MM per, and Patrick Marleau signed a four year deal as well, coming in at a $6.9MM cap hit annually.

"We are very pleased that Patty and Joe have committed to this organization now and in the future," Doug Wilson told sjsharks.com. "They expressed a strong belief in the direction this franchise is heading but also understand the challenges to keeping a talented group like ours together."

Keeping that core group together has been a priority for the organization following a successful playoff run to the 2010 Western Conference Finals. Fighting through some major setbacks against Colorado that saw two fluke goals go against San Jose throughout the series, and dispatching the arch nemesis Detroit Red Wings in a mere five games, the Sharks were poised to make a statement and finally break through to their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance.

Chicago had something to say about that however, rolling over the Sharks in four. Although ten years from now the record books will callously indicate that a sweep abruptly ripped the dreams away from an entire city, the series was much closer than it appeared-- San Jose competed hard for the majority of the time, and a bounce here or there could have tilted the tables in the Sharks direction.

With the core locked up under contract, the attention now turns towards the compensation both Marleau and Pavelski received in these deals, and what that means for both the near and long-term future. We had previously slotted Pavelski in the $4.2-$4.5MM range after looking at some market comparables-- for him to sign a four year deal at $4.0MM flat is a great success for the organization, locking up one of the best young two-way centers in the game today until his 29th birthday. The penalty kill, powerplay, and even strength contributions Pavelski brings to the table are well worth that type of money.

Marleau's contract at $6.9MM is one that, at face value, seems to be on the high side when many were hoping for a long frontloaded deal that would extend to eight years at $5.0MM. But with Doug Wilson staunchly opposed to these types of contracts due to the fact that they violate the intended nature of the CBA, it's likely that this type of discussion was never on the table. It's hard to say Marleau isn't worth that type of money considering his all around prowess, and along with the 44 goals he scored this season, you're paying market value for a player who deserves to be compensated as such.

It's not a hometown discount persay, but when coupled with Pavelski's contract, Doug Wilson definitely had a successful day just twenty four hours before the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

With the NHL salary cap announced to be $59.4MM next season, San Jose currently has $12.225MM to work with when attempting to sign four forwards, one defenseman, and a goaltender. Restricted Free Agent Devin Setoguchi still requires a contract, and with most estimates pegging him in the $3.0-$3.5MM range after seeing Pavelski's compensation, that number will be cut to around $9.0MM for three forwards, one defenseman, and a goaltender.

Provided a pair of young players from Worcester (McLaren, Ferriero) make the roster, along with an unrestricted free agent such as Scott Nichol, the Sharks would be left with around $7.0MM to land a top-pairing defenseman such as Paul Martin, and shore up the goaltending position considering long-time netminder Evgeni Nabokov will not be returning. It's more than enough money to do so, and unlike last season, will not require a trade to get under considering the bump in the cap ceiling.

However, for a player such as Manny Malhotra to return in this scenario (who should make around $2.0MM per), trading away a roster player could be required if the Sharks wish to bring in some major defensive help. Ryane Clowe is the name that always comes to mind in this situation, but it's unlikely he would be dealt until after July 1st when Wilson has had a crack at the free agent market.

All in all, the Sharks have proved once again why they are a consistently successful organization. Although the team currently has $21.6MM locked up in their big three forwards, with Dan Boyle also making $6.66MM per year, the time to compete for the Cup is now. Joe Thornton's contract expires next season, but after that, the remaining three players are all under contract until 2014.

The implication? San Jose arguably still has a four year window to compete for the Stanley Cup. Taking into account the regular season muscle they have flexed during the last five years, that makes a decade of being in a position to legimately contend on hockey's grandest stage.

Hard to say Wilson isn't one of the better GM's in the game today.

Go Sharks.

I remember Jumbo saying he liked 3-year deals.

I wonder if the Sharks will give him one considering everyone else who has a contract expiring that year.

I hope not

Given his steep drop the last two years I would hope they let him walk and use the 7+ mil to better effect elsewhere.

Steep drop?

You mean the steep drop from 96 points to 86 and then 89? Thornton is a playmaker, he gets his assists, and this year was his best postseason ever. Not exactly a “steep drop.”

I actually hope the Sharks lock up Thornton until the end of his career. His skillset is not the kind that deteriorates with age. Later on he’ll still be able to pass and find teammates and create plays. He’s one of the best passers in the NHL…top 3. You don’t just “let that walk.”

Yeah, I agree.

And I think his drop in points has more to do with teams adjusting to rules after the lockout. Seriously, look at the ridiculous numbers players put up that year and the next.

There’s no indication on CapGeek of either Pavelski or Marleau receiving one, but I doubt they would have it up this quickly anyway. Check back in about a week and it will likely be up to date if they did in fact receive something along those lines.

lol there’s been rumors about the Sharks being interested in every goaltender out there, now matter how little sense it would make to acquire them. (and not just goaltenders) I think that’s just a testament to how good of GM we have since it seems like the Sharks have been involved in every trade rumor that we hear about like Spezza, Thomas, Turco etc.

by Khaaz on Jun 24, 2010 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

We’d have to give up some serious salary to be able to get Vokun, and with Halak gone and Montreal qualifying Price I think that is unlikely as well.

You’re correct in assuming we picked Toffoli— we selected him over email about a week ago when SBN Hockey was setting this up. Completely forget about doing another writeup for it, though.

I’ll shoot TCY a text and see if he’ll do something for the front page, or maybe just fanshot our previous article and explain this is the guy we selected. I have to run right now.

Nice

It’s really kind of mind boggling to me that Toffoli isn’t popping up in a lot of 1st round mock drafts. How many other players got 79 points in 55 games this past season in the OHL? I keep hearing about his poor skating but from the video clips i saw of him he looks like a pretty good skater to me.

Here’s a “prospect profile” video of Toffoli with some clips of him skating for anyone interested.

lol any draft that has Toffoli not being picked by the Sharks or anyone else in the first round is just retarded. Puck Daddy’s mock draft had Ryan Lambert saying that we’d pick goaltender Calvin Pickard with our 1st rounder; (like we need more goaltenders in our system) and thanks to Wyshynski’s misleading article title even his own writer Ryan Lambert thinks the Sharks organization broke the news to Nabokov solely via the website, and Lambert made a joke about firing our next goaltender via twitter…

That blog really pisses me off sometimes.

I’d make a good guess to say that there are probably some fat bonuses in both of those contracts as well. Good job to DW, and Patty, and Pavs.

There are specific situations in which there can be bonuses in NHL contracts

Neither Patty nor Pavelski’s situations are satisfy those reasons.

For bonuses to be allowable the contract must be an entry level contract, a one-year deal for a player over 35, or is a one year deal for players who have spent a hundred or more days on IR in the previous year.

WILSON!!!

He’s better than a volleyball…He’s sharper than Ron…He’s THEE Wilson of Wilsons…

Ok…enough of that crap.

Uh, I’m happy Patty and Pavs are back, but it wont matter much in the playoffs if we don’t get at least one very good Dman (and another of at least good quality wouldn’t be too bad either). I fear that if we don’t get Martin-like and Coburn-like help in the defensive zone we could have two goalies for all the difference it will make imho. If DW knows defense so well why did he let SJ’s D come to be in such a state?

In the interim, I think Todd should tape team teal down to some hard, plastic chairs and force them to watch hours on end of Mark Messier and Scott Stevens playoffs videos just to make sure they understand what leadership, determination, and grit look like.

BTW, the Patty pics made me grin for a moment somewhere down in my tiny Grinch heart. I feel so good I might help that old lady cross the street. Pfffft…nah…I never feel THAT good.

Congrats guys

That’s great news for you Sharks fans. I’ve always liked Marleau – great job by Dougie Wilson to keep him in the fold. And Pavelski is a Wisconsin guy, so I’m good with him as well.

A lot of posturing here in Chicago about what is happening next, but the overall consensus with the Byfuglien trade is positive – salary dump and good prospects in return.

Anyway, I’m expecting more great things out of the Sharks next year – if the Hawks can’t repeat (and given how difficult it is to do, I’m thinking they won’t), you guys certainly deserve it. Good luck.

Interesting Day for Sharks Fans!

First, on the Pavelski deal…I think it’s a steal. 4 million a year, 4 years. Awesome. He’ll be due for his big payday (assuming he continues to improve on his badassery) right when some of our biggest salaries are off the books. Perfect! I could have seen teams throwing 5 million a year at him, and figured we might get away with 4.5, so 4 is amazing. And to have it done before July 1 is key, as now we don’t have to worry about offer sheets and whatnot (I figured they’d sign him early).

Marleau’s deal is a little more interesting. 6.9 million is probably slightly less than he could have gotten on the open market (7-7.5 would have been expected by me), and it’s good value for him, but it’s still a huge chunk of change. I love the term of the deal. 4 years is awesome. Nice, shortish, gives us future flexibility. I was really worried we’d lock him up for a cap hit like that for 7 years, and that’s just too long. DW seems to really like keeping his deals shorter, and I appreciate him for that. Marleau’s cap hit, even with the salary cap going up, will mean either one of two things, though.

1) We’re not planning on upgrading our blueline, we’ll just resign Wallin, and then go cheap in net with either a Greiss/Stalock tandem (ugh) or sign someone like Ellis for 2 mil a year; or
2) Someone has to be traded, so DW can upgrade the blueline through FA or trades.

I definately hope its #2, because the blueline is pretty weak. I assume Ferriero and McLaren are going to be given a shot to stick. Malhotra could come back for 1.7 to 2 mil a year, Nichol for less than a million. If we then trade Clowe, we’d have enough to sign a top pairing blueliner and a goalie, and our offense wouldn’t take too big a hit, and our back end would be solid.

Guess we’ll see. A good start to the offseason, but it definately raised some more questions that will need to be answered as we progress through the draft and into free agency.

Glad you’re staying with us Patty and Pavs! Now, win us a Cup!

Clowe stays

It’s my opinion, but also a strong hunch that he’s not going anywhere.
There’s still a lot of capspace room, and DW looks deeply for bargains where he doesn’t have to trade core players. Clowe is a core player, even if he’s located on the outer shell of that core.
Be also aware that Sterling and Vernace are eligible for UFA come July 1st. The “trade” there doesn’t lock up any money (unless they’re signed). If not signed, the 7th round pick was a freebie.

If Clowe stays, our blueline doesn’t get an upgrade (because we wouldn’t be able to afford it under the cap). We’d be stuck with Boyle-Murray, Vlasic-Wallin, Huskins-Demers in front of Greiss and some bargain goalie. Even if that other goalie was Dan Ellis, that’s a scarily weak backend.

Something has to happen.

Sterling and Vernance have literally no bearing on anything in this conversation.

Guess we'll have to wait and see

Sterling and Vernace do have bearing, as far as my reply about potential capspace.

Yeah, there’s just no other option that makes more sense in terms of dumping an expensive contract that consistently yields mixed results. As clutch as Clowe was throughout the first two series this postseason, we rarely see that Clowe during the regular season.

read the last sentence again

“As clutch as Clowe was throughout the first two series this postseason, we rarely see that Clowe during the regular season.”

Hasn’t our team constantly been flamed for having great regular seasons and sub-par postseasons? Isn’t the post-season what matters?

I’m not worried about NOT making the playoffs, I’m worried about how we’ll perform IN the playoffs. If Clowe steps up big in the playoffs, but is merely okay during the regular season, then I’m fine with that. I’d rather have that than a player who absolutely dominates the regular season and just disappears in the POs.

Clowe’s post-season performance is absolutely why we should keep him.

by PNK on Jun 25, 2010 8:17 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t think anyone, least of all myself, is minimizing how important Clowe was in this postseason; the issue is his cap hit. I don’t see that sort of role being worth a $3.6 million cap hit on a team that’s going to be hard-pressed as it is to ink the free agents everyone wants to see return (Manny, Nichol, Seto), as well as fill out the blueline.

Sorry, but I disagree.

New WTC on the signings

Lots of interesting quotes and stuff in it. Check it out

A couple things I inferred from it:

1. Pavelski is the fucking MAN. He could’ve easily gotten much more, and he seems to be aware of that, but he doesn’t care because he wants to do whatever he can to help the team. Future Captain anyone??

2. DW sounds like he’s looking for a big shotblocking type goaltender; which is exactly what i’ve been wanting and hoping for for a while now. This should definitely put to rest the Marty Turco rumors since he’s pretty much the exact opposite of that type of goaltender, moreso than Nabby even imo.

3.

by Khaaz on Jun 24, 2010 2:19 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I also enjoyed how candid DW was in that article, particularly about goaltending. The fact that he’s (apparently) actively seeking that (awesome) type of goaltender is great news, particularly for those of us that want a few less gray hairs. It definitely sounds like Pavs has bought into the system in San Jose, and I think that creating an environment that players actively seek out, rather than just treat as a job, is the best possible situation any professional sports franchise can be in.

I went today.

I went around 4:30ish and a lot of the stuff was already gone. No gloves, goalie masks, etc. I went there to see if I could get a good deal on a stick that hadn’t really been used that could be used for when I play and I ended up getting a Demers stick (as I am a righty) for $99. The only other righty sticks were Cheech, Grier, and Claude Lemieux, but they were a little more expensive. There are still quite a bit of game-used jerseys and lefty sticks as well. For all the Couture lovers out there, they still have a bunch of his sticks and I saw one McGinn stick as well.

Clowe for Souray

Or maybe DW’s planning on making a play at Kaberle, which is why Seto wasn’t inked just yet. I’m not a huge Kaberle fan, TBH. I like Souray’s booming shot, and his size. He’s a bit of a one trick pony though, so Martin would be the obvious choice. Martin has health questions, so I’d want something a bit more reliable.

I hear ya, although I never thought Pavs leaving was a possibility, seeing Nabby go was a major gut check and the thought of losing both Patty and Nabby sent me into a mild panic attack.

Getting Marleau back in the fold for another 4 years gave me a serious sigh of relief followed by a smile that can’t seem to go away.

Yeah, I agree about Pavs, but I was still extremely nervous about Patty until the news that Nabby wasn’t being extended a contract. At that point, I was much more confident about Patty returning.

I’m still really pleased with Pav’s contract. And while I’m happy Marleau is back, I don’t feel the overwhelming joy everyone else seems to feel. He’s a good player, but his cap hit could have been used well as well. I was never worried about the future of the Sharks, regardless of the outcome of Patty’s contract negotiations.

Marleau

I am NOT happy with Marleau resigning. We, in Detroit wanted that guy. We were willing to pay up to the cap to get him. Ok, Patrick, you want to play in the bay, or do you want to play for hockeytown? You are an idiot. Go into obscurity, when you could have been a Red Wing… and live forever.
