Fear the Fin Live at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft
Greetings, Sharks faithful. It is we, your trusted Sharks writers Plank and TCY. We have arrived at the Staples Center with much fanfare, and are looking forward to providing you with up to the millisecond Sharks coverage. Stop by throughout the day for updates, and keep up with us on Twitter. (@fearthefin, @FTFsTCY)
We'll have a live thread up starting at 3:30 PM.

The NHL Draft: The ream. Desire. The tree.
We're up close, and right behind the Sharks table. That is, until they figure out who we are and push us back 20 rows.

Either Chara got shorter in the off season, or the gray manikin store was out of XXXL's.
We'll keep updating as we get more in.
Go Sharks.

The NBA draft followed by the NHL draft

Three days
Today is only the first round of the NHL draft. Tomorrow is rounds 2-7. So that’d be three days of non-productivity.

I’m only watching the first round. Too much draft for me.

Yeah, it gets a bit overbearing. But last year, with the Sharks not having a first rounder and all, it was kind of a necessity to watch the second day.

Thanks for doing this!
For those of us who can’t watch/or be there :)
High sticking, tripping, slashing, spearing, charging, hooking, fighting, unsportsmanlike conduct, interference, roughing… everything else is just figure skating.

I-5 = Most Boring Freeway ever
There is no scenery to look at from Red Bluff to Los Angeles.

Harris Ranch has some pretty nice bathrooms, though. Or, at least, the gas station/sandwich shop that’s right next to it, that is.
Oh, and there’s the best thing ever on I-5: a drive-through Panda Express. Which is next to a drive-through Starbucks.
However, a not-so-good place is the gas station/McDonalds way north of there, that has millions of flies. It’s probably like 3-4 hours south of San Jose. There’s an In-N-Out right next door, if I can recall correctly.
I’ve driven down I-5 way too many times.

Kettleman City is where you are talking about
That one exit is fast food restaurants galore…and expensive gas.
Oh yeah, Kettleman City. That sounds right. I am not a fan of it – I’ve had to stop at the McDonald’s there almost every year, eating their disgusting breakfast burritos amid all the flies. But it’s like in the perfect place if you’ve been driving south from San Jose since 6am and you want some breakfast.

He’s been the absolute worst goalie in the league for the past two seasons. Like, an .880 SV%. That’s horrible.

How did I know it was going to be that goal
before I even clicked on that link?

Keith Ballard
Word is he might be available from Florida. We all know how DW doesn’t like to go the UFA route on July 1, so improving the blue line might happen via trade. Ballard’s one of the guys I’ve been targeting.
The Florida Sun-Sentinel is saying the Blues are interested, possibly for center Patrick Berglund. Berglund’s only 22 and has a bright future ahead of him, so if this is true, I’m not sure the Sharks have what it takes to get Ballard—plus Florida is likely looking to go younger than Clowe…and I’d really prefer not dealing away Setoguchi. You’d have to do better than Ballard in that case (though the nice thing about Ballard is that he’s locked up at a somewhat reasonable figure—$4.2 per through 2015—and is only 27).
Is 4.2 million really that reasonable for Ballard? From the little i’ve seen of Ballard he looks pretty good, but i dunno if he’s 4.2 million good.
Ehh
My impression of Ballard is that he likes hurting his own goalies. But those were only a few instances.

You would be surprised how ubiquitous they’ve become.
"Playing Detroit in the playoffs is like paying your taxes. You either pay now or pay later." - Suisun Dan
The money is somewhat relative
I think of it as reasonable in a world where Anton Volchenkov, who is totally one-dimensional (albeit very good at that dimension), will probably pull in over $5 million per year.
Among trade targets, Ballard’s probably more of a sure-thing than Coburn, and less of a risk than Brent Burns (head). With his salary, Coburn might be my No. 1 trade target, but I haven’t heard yet—except from people assuming it will happen—that the Flyers are actually interested in trading him. Of course that’s probably because it’s looking more and more likely that they won’t actually end up signing Hamhuis, who must be looking for some big bucks.
by Timorous Me on Jun 25, 2010 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions
I disagree that Volchenkov is one-dimensional.
Have you watched how he plays outside of Ottawa? He was running the PP for Team Russia. He’s also a great skater.
Out of all names proposed for a role to strengthen our defense, I think Volchenkov may fit into the Sharks system the fastest.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
Interesting—I didn’t pay much attention to Volchenkov during the Olympics, but I could believe that. Sometimes a team’s system can really hold guys back. You slip into a role, like Volchenkov has (particlularly when you do that as well as he has), and you become relied upon to stay in that role.
Anyway, I really enjoyed watching his defensive play whenever I saw the Sens play this year, and I’m sure he’ll be a good help for whomever gets him, but I’d just be really worried about the financial investment.
The key thing is here is that Russian hockey system never raised defense-only d-men. That’s just not anything the young kids are ever taught.
Volchenkov is an anomaly, but seeing how he’s played in the juniors and where he plays when he plays for Russia makes me think that there is a lot more to his game than what he’s allowed to do in Ottawa.
With that said, he’ll be a mile upgrade to anything the Sharks have right now when it comes to defense.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
I don’t know if bringing up how Russia played defense is a great idea when considering players to bring to the team. I remember how well that defense helped their goalie.

In one game.. In fact, in just one and a half period.
A bit of a poor sample.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
Have fun guys.
Call me if DW comes to his senses and drafts Kabanov with our 1st round pick.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
How will they have time to do that when they have more important issues like asking DW how often he tans and why he’s never aged.
