Something that got my blood boiling
From the Twitter feed of Tim Panaccio, of CSN Philly:
One GM told me tonight. “nabokov quit in olympics. People won’t touch him.”
Seriously? These words actually came out of a general manager’s mouth?? I mean, I guess when you see how bad some teams are it’s not surprising that there’s such idiocy out there in management, but I’m still floored.
If there is one thing I've learned from watching sports.
No matter what league, there is idiot GM’s everywhere.

Nabokov also did quite well in the 2006 Olympics. And the 2008 World Championships. And a lot of other tournaments and playoff series. Don’t pick and choose, jackass.

I can't believe how quiet things have been
On the trade front, both yesterday and today. Really thought there’d be more action, though I can understand why there isn’t today with how fast things are moving.
This draft is making me wish Doug Wilson wouldn’t always trade away our draft picks like candy. It makes me sad that a team that just won the Stanley Cup is stockpiling picks like crazy and going to add a ton of talent to their system. Meanwhile we have only 2 picks in the first 4 rounds.
They’re also trading away half of the roster that won them that cup to get those picks.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Not really. They traded away like 2 guys, and one is pretty easily replaceable. And Buff is an enigma during the regular season.
Byfuglien, Sopel, Eager, and Fraser. More than two players. And they’ll likely have to make more moves. And while that’s not half the roster, it depletes their depth. Just try to win the Cup relying solely on your top line. Hell, your top two lines. You don’t go anywhere without lower line players contributing – just look at Max Talbot and his two goals in Game 7 to win the Cup.

"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
I really doubt it – he was the catalyst with us. And since they were all practically 1 goal games, take away his goals and we win at least one of those games.

All those guys are easily replaceable for Chicago. They have Jack Skille who can probably play on the 2nd line if he continues to develop, if not he’ll be a checking line winger who can score and create problems with his speed. They have some good depth in their system at forward and have kids who can come in and play on the 3rd and 4th lines pretty soon. Their cupboard is far from bare, and they just loaded it up some more the past 2 days with the picks they acquired. Yeah, while it hurts that they lost some of their depth, they’re going to be just fine in the interim. They also got Reasoner back in the trade.

There's a lot you could do to bash DW
Some of his trades have been pretty terrible, same with his contract extensions.
But he’s not Brian Sabean or Al Davis or pretty much any other GM in the Bay Area. He’s one of the top general managers in the sport, easy. Some of his contracts have been iffy, but the moves that he has made consistently improves the team and allows the team to contend year in and year out.

The team was already a contender when he got the job. He’s made some good moves, but he’s also given up a lot of talent to get what were marginal upgrades in many instances. Not to mention many draft picks. He’s definitely not bad like Darryl Sutter or Mike Millbury bad, but he’s also no Ken Holland.
weren’t the Sharks like 13th in the division or so until the Thornton trade?
by pooponastick on Jun 26, 2010 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions
Wilson’s first year as GM was 03-04, same year the Sharks made the Conference Finals vs Calgary. Pre Thornton, pre lockout.
he made the thornton trade when they were at the bottom though, its not like he coasted through
by pooponastick on Jun 26, 2010 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions
But that just supports the argument that he’s a good GM – the year before, the Sharks were out of the playoffs, last in their division, 14th in the conference. Doug Wilson comes in, makes some moves, and the Sharks win the divisions and are second in the conference.

by pooponastick on Jun 26, 2010 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions
Not really
And the year before that the Sharks won the Pacific division. Hence they were already contenders. The only moves Wilson made was to trade for Nils Ekman and Curtis Brown. The team was already built for him. Ron Wilson had already been named coach the season before, under previous GM Dean Lombardi.
The team struggled in 02-03 thanks to Darryl Sutter, Owen Nolan’s injuries, and Nabokov holding out at the beginning of the season.

Gaede is a power forward that can play the wing and is excellent cycling the puck along the boards. He has pretty good vision and passing ability, though his skating could use some improvement. He’s also regarded as a very high character kid with an outstanding work ethic.

“I think once Gaede gets passed high school we are going to see some incredible hockey from him. He is one of those guys you always want on your team for making things happen on the ice. What his teamates do with that playmaking is another story. Right now, not much is working for the Woodbury team. Maybe they’ll work it out. If not, he is a great player with more potential for the NHL than anyone I see out on the high school scene. He is still a fun loving kid who hasn’t even peaked yet. Other hockey players like him because he is smart and considerate on the ice. He is admired by all levels of player.”

Upped his draft stock dramatically with a great performance for Team Canada at the 2010 IIHF World U18 Championship, finishing with five assists, six points and a plus-5 rating in six games… is capable of playing both wing and center, and he’s a very good playmaker with creativity and instincts as a big part of his game… finished second on the IceDogs in assists (30) and third in points (55) in 64 games in 2009-2010…

A snippet about our new German Dman
Halifax is by far the worst team in the league this season, but Abeltshauser has been our best defenceman when healthy. He needs to work on his defensive game, but it’s not nearly as bad as the +/- shows.
He came here as a 17 year old, and had to learn a new style of play on smaller rinks, as well as a new culture to live in. Yet, right from training camp, he’s been outplaying 19 year old veterans. All this while battling injuries pretty much as soon the pre-season began.
He’s a bit raw, but he’s been very impressive so far.
If the US
could play D in the first 15 minutes of a game they’d be pretty damned formidable.
So, we drafted the required German, just need a goalie and Ottawa 67 now.

I’m hoping that’s for 2 years.

at least Wallin’s contract is only one year. But I wasn’t terribly impressed with his play.

For who we have, we have one of the most overpayed defenses. Huskins at 1.7, Wallin at 2.5, and even Murray at 2.5… Those are some ridiculous contracts for pretty average (and possibly below average) players.
One could argue that Murray’s contract is fair. not one person could make a valid argument that Wallin has proven to be worth the same contract.

say what? Boyle and Vlasic are not over paid

Yeah, Boyle and Vlasic are definitely not overpaid. Boyle may be paid a lot, but there is a premium on offensive, puck-moving defensemen, and he’s arguably the best. Vlasic is one of the top defensive defensemen in the league at 23, with 5 years of NHL experience under his belt already. $3.1M is more than fair for him.

LOL Vlasic one of the top D-Men in the league? No way. He’s good but him and Murray should have their contract figures swapped. Murray is much more reliable, and he’s also not a wuss when it comes to having to move someone off the puck. Hell I’d rather have Josh Gorges back over Vlasic.
Boyle is overpaid. He has the same cap hit that Scott Niedermeyer had and he’s not nearly that good. He can move the puck sure, but he’s not exactly a shutdown defenseman. If Boyle is not overpaid at 6.75 than what should Pronger, Doughty, or Shea Weber be worth?
My bad – I meant to put “top young defensive defensemen.” But you have got to be shitting me if you think Murray and Vlasic should have their contracts switched. Murray is physical, yes, and he has improved leaps and bounds in terms of defensive play this year, but he just started earning that $2.5M this year. And more reliable? Vlasic is the most reliable defenseman on the team! Yeah he’s not physical, but that doesn’t hurt the Sharks if he doesn’t give up the puck or make bad passes, which he does. There can be two different defensive defenseman styles – Murray’s is physical, and Vlasic’s is quietly breaking up plays and scoring opportunities, which he does pretty damn well. Basically, if you don’t know Vlasic, that means he is doing his job well.
Rob Blake and Marc-Eduoard Vlasic was a top 5 shut-down defensive pairing for the past two years. That means, out of all the 90 pairings or so in the league, they were in the top 5.6% in allowing the fewest goals per 60 minutes.
And then let’s examine offensive contributions. Neither of them are known for it. Murray’s top two offensive outputs are seasons of 10 and 17 points and bottom two are 1 and 3 points. Vlasic’s bottom two offensive outputs are seasons of 14 and 16 points, and his top two are 26 and 36 points. Murray has also been the league longer.
I don’t hate Douglas Murray, I just think that your assertion that Douglas Murray is better than Marc-Eduoard Vlasic is laughable.
As for Boyle – CapGeek doesn’t have Niedermayer’s salary anymore since he retired, but there is the issue of Niedermayer being older than Boyle. He already semi-retired once, and was going on a year-by-year basis in the NHL. Two completely different situations.
Doughty and Weber are both RFAs, with Doughty being on his freaking ELC. You can’t compare their salaries to Boyle’s because the NHL has rules in place that favors the team over the younger player. When they hit UFA status, hell yeah do I expect both of them to have Boyle’s salary, and probably more in Doughty’s case.
And finally, as per CapGeek, while Pronger’s cap hit is only $6.25M, he is being paid over $7M until the 2014-15 season, at which point he will be almost 40 years old. Yeah, he’s being paid more than Boyle.
Boyle isn’t a shut down defenseman, sure, but he’s the guy that runs the power play, that confuses teams when he cycles down from the point and jumps up into play. His skating is superb – I remember some Penguins fans saying that his skating was “unfair” when we played them this past season. That’s valuable in the new NHL, and teams do pay $6.67M for it.

Pronger’s cap hit is actually 4.9 million now. It used to be 6.25 from 2006 to 2010 before the Flyers signed him to a long frontloaded extension.
But yeah i agree with everything you said. Boyle is about as good a defensemen as you can find. He’s one of the fastest skaters in the league, he’s easily one of the best offensive defensemen in the league, he’s excellent defensively, and he still somehow manages to be pretty damn physical even though he’s kinda small.
Right, misread that. My bad. But even if it is $4.9M, it’s an over-35 contract meaning that no matter what happens to him, the Flyers will be on the hook for it. That makes up for the lower cap hit, sort of like how RFAs also have lower cap hits.
Oh, and let me also correct something else of mine – it’s Marc-Edouard Vlasic. I can never spell that correctly.

With Wallin’s contract, does that signal the Sharks’ aren’t pursuing any of the big name UFA d-men?
Boyle
Vlasic
Murray
Wallin
Demers
Huskins
This d-core is weaker than last year’s. DW isn’t paying Wallin $2.5 million to play on the third pairing. Huskins at $1.7 million is still overpaid for a third pairing.

I don't know what this means...
Is Wilson just waiting this year out for his D? Is he waiting for Doherty, Petrecki, Moore, and Demers to make the roster before making any adjustments?
Because as it stands now, that is one poor D core and most certainly is not an improvement on the one that was wrecked upon by Chicago…
I think DW might not get anymore D. Because Wallin and Huskins ate now pretty close to untradeable contracts because they are so overpaid.
Unless DW trades Vlassic, Murray, or Demers there isn’t much room left on this team, let alone cap…?!?!
My one issue with DW has been this. He tend to over value his players and especially D.
I hope I’m wrong.

Not draft related, but relevant to today's signings.
I just checked Cap Geek and we have just under 9 million dollars in cap space, needing three forwards and a goalie. I say three forwards because it lists guys like McLaren, Ferreiro, etc as “non-roster” players, so if you plug one of those guys in our cap space would be closer to 8 million dollars. Still a decent amount of cap space left work with to sign two forwards and a goalie, but it looks like we won’t be adding another defenseman through free agency due to the Wallin deal.

I definitely don't think that's an upgrade defensively.
But I’m confident DW knows what he’s doing and has a reason for the signings.

That’s exagerrating a little. Blake will be in the HoF, but he wasn’t exactly in his prime with us. He was a good d-man certainly and Wallin is no replacement, but it’s not like we lost Boyle.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
He played damn good for us in the playoffs…no he’s not Boyle, he’s Blake. Our defense pairings are certainly weaker without him, how can you argue that?
Let see, reading my post…
He was a good d-man certainly and Wallin is no replacement, but it’s not like we lost Boyle.
Looks like I said that we’re weaker, I’m just saying we didn’t lose a hall of fame caliber player for the Sharks when Blake left.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
You really do just like to argue for the sake of arguing don’t you? Rob Blake will be a hall of famer, and he played excellently for us in the playoffs when it mattered, and now he’s gone and our defensive corps got a lot weaker. End of story.

We shouldve just let Wallin walk. Admitted our mistake, but we overpaid to keep his pathetic ass. He better play better when he’s healthy
Bring Back Nolan we have no reason not to except that he didn’t get along with marleau, we didn’t pick up any immediate impact in the draft
We better use that idiot Wallin as a forward and just crash him into people..lol

Don't get me wrong, I love Owen Nolan. He was my favorite player.
But do you honestly think he would make an immediate impact if he came back to SJ?

If he took league minimum… Played on the 3rd/4th lines… And was scratched often… I’d consider it.
The thing about Nolan that goes beyond his age is his desire to win. It would be only matched by Dan Boyle on this team.
Plus in it would ne nice to see him retire in teal after holding up the cup!!
I can dream right?

Even if Wallin is healthy
He’s purely a defensive defenseman. 35 years old. And it’s not like he’s mobile, or a great shot-blocker like Volchenkov.
I’ve been spending the entire afternoon checking here and anywhere else I can think of in the hope that SOMEHOW LeBrun was wrong and it’s not actually $2.5 million for one year. Unfortunately, when it’s confirmed, I’m going to be pissed at wasting much of my afternoon bothering with this, too.
Yeah man, i just keep telling myself that Lebrun is probably wrong. Cuz seriously, 2.5 million? That can’t be right. It makes no sense to give a 35 year old defenseman such a huge raise after a season where he didn’t play that well, and then got injured and pretty much missed the players.
It seriously makes no sense, it CANT be true…
I'm happy with these picks.
Unhappy with the Walin dollar amount.
