Sad to see the US go out, I was hoping they might make a push to the semis with the route they were handed by topping the group.
Nervous excitement building ahead of our clash with the Germans tomorrow. Time to avenge the pain of ’90 and ’96, the latter of which was probably the most painful moment of my childhood…

Everyone thought they’d make it this far. Absolutely everyone figured the US would make it out of their group. So they performed as expected to an extent. However, once their knockout round was known, they were expected to actually make some sort of a run…and at that, they fell woefully short of expectations.
At best, the US met their relatively low expectations. Sigh.

Do NOT Bandwagon for Germany!
They are the Montreal Canadiens of Soccer. They have a storied past, but they’re awful now (well, the ACTUAL Canadiens proved a lot of us wrong), but Germany’s success at the World Cup is built on a lot of bad soccer karma. Kinda like the Canadiens and their unfair player acquisitions back in the day.

So yesterday, in true soccer fan fashion, I headed down to The Brit in Monterey to watch the World Cup. My buddy and I showed up at 7:30 to start drinking…watched the rest of the Uruguay win, and got ready for the US Match. By the time the match started, the place was packed to standing room only capacity. And it was an awesome crowd. Very lively, all having a wonderful time. And then the U.S. played soccer, and it was awful. They were just terrible. Why they didn’t attack a Ghana defense that was weak and a has a shaky goalie I have no idea. We aren’t good enough on the back end to play a defensive strategy…but we have world class strikers…WHY SIT BACK???
Anyways, it was a depressing way to head into a wedding I was a part of. And I ended up drinking for 13.5 straight hours that day. I have a headache this morning. Groan.

I really must say it’s sad that the World Cup is over for us. I was really hoping to make a run at the Finals this year, we had probably the easiest path there that we’ve ever had this year. Not to mention, the World Cup is the only thing I have to watch here on Chinese cable (can’t understand any of the other channels =/ ) and now that we’re eliminated, I have no idea how I’m going to survive the rest of the summer. No Sharks, no World Cup…
I can’t believe it ended like that.. At least it wasn’t another Confederations Cup or Gold Medal Olympic Hockey type of heart break this time. Man, I hate US international sports, they always find a way to get your hopes up before crushing the **** out of them.
I know what you mean about the U.S. in international sports Had my hopes up for Olympic hockey this year, and still a bit disgruntled with having lost the gold medal game. I just didn’t think it would/could be Ghana AGAIN that would take us out in the World Cup, AARGH!!!

Gutted
Just the same old story for England yesterday, only thing left to do is get behind the Dutch. Hup Holland Hup!
And you think you live in a non-traditional hockey market...
Ive been on the Dutch bandwagon since the 3rd German goal. CMON HOLLAND!
"Hes like a Sweedish Bear" -Randy Hahn 4/8/10
Dont boo your team!
Gotta love the Dutch
Cruyff, van Basten, Bergkamp, Edam, windmills, total football, Amsterdam (and everything that entails), etc…
Gutted at the late, late penalty they conceded today – had van der Wiel and van Bronckhorst in my fantasy team and losing that clean sheet has cost me dear. Still, at least Sneijder hit the back of the net and played in Robben, it’s not so bad.
Looking forward to Brazil v Chile this evening, if Chile line up with their unorthodox 3-3-1-3 formation there could be lots of (mainly Brazilian) goals. Let’s hope that’s the case!
And you think you live in a non-traditional hockey market...
Total Football is cool
Cruyff is just one of those players though that’s easy to hate.
I’m still not quite sold on this Dutch team, but if Arjen Robben is finally the player he was always advertised to be, then I could be eating my words.
I still think Brazil, Argentina and Spain are the class of this tournament. The Dutch could be a dark-horse. Germany will crumple once they face a team with a real defense. Klosse and Podolski are awesome in the Bundesliga, and fairly meaningless in any game that matters.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
I think the Dutch are thought of as a darkhorse because no one really talks about them. Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Germany, and England got all the attention going in but no one spoke about the Dutch. I like their chances of making a run at this thing.
"Hes like a Sweedish Bear" -Randy Hahn 4/8/10
Dont boo your team!
They have a bit of a Golden Generation going
I’ve never been a big fan of Robben, but he seems to really be playing at a new level as compared to tournaments past.
As a Liverpool man, I have a soft spot for Dirk Kuyt, but I wonder if he can be a big game player. Love his effort and work rate, but in a tournament like this, you need someone who just plain finishes.

Ivory Coast = All French
Algeria = All French
Germany = Three best players are Polish, Tunisian and Ghanian.

Um, holy shit Brazil...
Way to blow it by playing shitty. Has there ever been a worse final World Cup game than the one Felipe Melo had today? An own goal to tie up the game (and one that really started the unraveling process for Brazil), and then a straight red after they went down 2-1, really making the idea of a comeback disappear. Just awful.
I had them winning the whole thing. Who wins it all now? Netherlands should waltz into the finals after their joke of a semifinal matchup. I think either Argentina or Spain takes them out in the Finals, though. Argentina’s looked really good.

Kingson did not look like he was going to save a single PK
For the first three kicks, his body language said he was just going to guess. And when he tried to be aggressive, the takers just waited him out.
Muslera at least made a stab at each of the kicks. Saved the two bad ones and got a hand to a third.

What a brutal, heartbreaking loss for Ghana.
You have a PK at 120’ to win it…and you clank the crossbar. And then go into PKs and have back to back PKs saved by the Uruguay goalie to lose. They were SO CLOSE to making the semifinals…gotta work on those PKs, though.

I never believed in Germany because they lacked a legitimate striker
But between Ozil and Mueller, they can overcome Podolski and Klosse’s big game disappearing act.
Ozil’s distribution and Mueller’s finishing are something the Germans have lacked since Klinsman was showing the world how to dive your way to a World Cup.

“They are telling the referees to rig the game against the South American teams”
Basically they cant lose, Its only the referees fault. Ill admit it England blew it against Germany, USA, and Algeria. But all my South American friends cant accept defeat and are conviced its one massive conspiracy theory.

Which is hilarious.
Because it’s teams like the South American teams that do most of the robbing in the games. Suarez and his intention handball that cost Ghana the goal. Argentina’s BS off sides against Mexico that gave them an early lead. Brazil’s handball for a goal.
Not to mention the Uruguay ref Larrionda that cost England a goal by not seeing it cross the line against Germany. Lots of shady play from SA if you ask me..

Dont boo your team!
I would hope so
The Spanish, were it not for their European Championship wins, would be the Sharks of Football.

I’m going to cheer for Spain tomorrow…even if it goes against my German heritage…just because of this. I mean, if SPAIN can win the World Cup, the Sharks can win the Stanley Cup!

The Uruguay-Holland game ended up being way more exciting that I had anticipated. Good show!

How about that first goal? What a beast of a strike from Gio!
Also, very pleased that the three Dutch players in my office fantasy team all hit the back of the net. Hup Holland hup!
And you think you live in a non-traditional hockey market...
It couldn’t have been placed any more perfectly than that…

Spain
I have been waiting for Germany to be knocked off ever since they destroyed me and England. Spain I doubt you can do it but please beat Germany, oh and then lose to Holland since I put money on them. Okay thank you.

Methinks the script is written
Torres of the bench to break his duck and German hearts.
Without Mueller, the German attack is severely lacking, and the Spanish midfield has bottled things up well.

This game has been boring...
I just want to see an exciting match…like yesterday’s!

It needed a goal for sure
I thought the game really opened up after Puyol scored.

Yeah I thought Mueller’s absence would make a difference as well… and I guess it did :(

Personally I am highly displeased by Germany's loss,
so I’m on the Dutch bandwagon now!!!
Go Orange people!!!
I meant displeased with, not by. Damn prepositions!

Well I expected Germany to dominate and seems they weren’t on the same page as I was. Now who do I pick? (thinking of picking a name from a hat)
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?

Spain baby Spain!
After watching the Netherlands game, I figured they’d be toast going against the winner of Spain/Germany because their central defending left a lot to be desired.
Then again, even though I knew Spain would beat Germany, and I knew they’d dominate possession, they really overpassed the ball.
I still think Spain will win because tonight, their back four were top draw. You worry about age creeping up with the likes of Puyol, Ramos and Pique, but it didn’t show tonight. Puyol really deserved that goal for all the unsung work he was doing at the back.
I think the Spanish starting 11 will be different against the Dutch too. I fully expect Torres to be back in with Villa up front. Torres gained some good ground in his brief spell, and he would have had a goal if Pedro had even bothered to look up to see him wide open!

Truth.
Wouldda been an EASY goal if Pedro had bothered to pass.

Go Spain!
A win for Spain is like a prediction of a future win for the Sharks!

Also
Lucas Podolski is the ACTUAL choking Joe Thornton. If hockey “fans” think Thornton comes up small in big games, they should watch him and Klosse.
Although, this time around, I give Klosse less crap. When he was partnered with Mueller, he was a great player. He clearly missed him tonight. Playing as a lone striker against an elite team like Spain, Klosse never stood a chance, and Germany so often wastes him in those kinds of situations. But give him a partner like Mueller, and you get great results.
Hmm… that actually DOES remind me of Joe a bit. That would make Podolski an awkward hybrid of Nils Ekman and Mark Bell…

Yeah, Germany really missed Mueller tonight. But Spain always tends to come up much smaller than their talent level indicates they should. Winning a World Cup, finally, would be huge vindication.

They're even more like us
In that this is probably the most talented team they’ve ever had. It’s REALLY now or never for them.
Although, for that matter, Holland is a bit historically like us too, except they loose finals. So I guess they’re World Soccer’s Buffalo Bills.

I’d almost kill for the Sharks to at least be hockey’s Bills, except by the 4th Championship loss, I’d probably hang myself. Ugh…
I’ve decided Spain gives me hope for the Sharks. Thus, I will cheer for them on Sunday.

Holland gives me more hope for the Sharks, spain has won a Euro in 2008 they cant be the Sharks of soccer. Holland beat France and Italy just two years removed from their WC finals appearance then bowed out to a beatable Russia team the next round. Holland ftw.
