Cheechoo on waivers
As reported by TSN: CHEECHOO, KOTALIK AMONG NHL PLAYERS ON WAIVERS
Jonathan Cheechoo, after a poor season that saw him pot only 5 goals, has been placed on waivers by the Ottawa Senators. There seems to be an expectation that the last year of his contract is going to be bought out - making him a UFA.
My question: would you like to see Cheechoo back on the San Jose Sharks if he signed a contract for at/under $1M per year?
If so what kind of role would you see him filling on the team?

No thank you. Cheechoo is far too slow to keep up with our scoring lines, and isn’t really a depth player that will effectively fill out the lower lines. I just don’t see him fitting in here.

I voted yes on the basis that he would only cost like 500k. He would still probably score more points than guys like Mclaren, Ortmeyer, Nichol, etc. Although i suppose they offer intangibles that Cheech probably wouldn’t…
I dunno it’s a tough decision. I guess his roster spot would be better used to test out the young guys like Ferriero, Desjardins or that maybe that Cam McIntyre kid.
It would still be awesome. If the Sharks did sign him that cheap I definitely would not be upset.
He still looked pretty damn good when he was playing against us that one time we played the Sens last season.
I like Cheechoo and its sad to see where his career has turned. Unfortunately he could not fit in our top 6 now and he is not a good bottom 6 player. Bringing Cheechoo back would be a disservice to both the team and him.

I hate to say it, but no.
It would be great for nostalgia’s sake, but I don’t really see him as a fit on this roster. I really do hope he gets a chance with another team though since I really want to see him bounce back.

Sucks, but also a no from me as well. Basically, I’m a skeptic to his abilities at this point, but I hope some team takes a flyer and he makes the most of it. Until he can show some of the ability we saw earlier here in his career, he shouldn’t be in teal, sentimental value notwithstanding.
NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Dan Ellis
Here are the highlights of a Sens game i remember watching where Cheechoo was playing great. Kipperusof robbed him with a couple amazing saves otherwise he would’ve had at least 2 goals and an assist. They actually announced he would be put on waivers a couple days after that game though.
I remember watching that game. Cheech had a spark in him that night. It’s like it comes and goes…

Interesting
In the poll it looks like people would like him on the team, and in the comments it’s a resounding NOOO!!!!
I, personally, would not mind having Cheech back on the team for a VERY favorable cap number. I still think he has something to contribute to a hockey team. I would basically start him out on the 3rd or 4th line with low expectations and see if he can work his way up the roster.
Maybe this doesn’t work for the Sharks, but I think that there is a team out there that will give him the opportunity. In all events I hope that he can put his injuries behind him and get his game back. The guy would take a stick to the throat for his team, I wish him the best.
Poor skating aside, Cheech still has a great shot, he’s good at playing in the tough areas, and he knows how to get the puck in the back of the net. I could see him having some success playing on the 3rd line alongside Couture and Manny or something.
Cheech has got so much heart, and you know that if we brought him back to San Jose he would give everything he’s got to help the team.

GREAT player until he got injured
Then he was never the same.
I hope he signs here for 1 mill or so.

I voted "no"
but, IF he could remain injury-free and IF he regains his nose for the net, I would welcome Cheech in teal with a spot on the 4th line. However, at this stage in his career, Cheech has a chip on his shoulder to show that he still is a top 6 winger, and I don’t think he would be ready for such a role. Perhaps if he is able to stick around in the NHL for a few more years, that would be an option similar to the invitations the Sharks offered Jeff Friesen, Sandis Ozolinsh, and others.

Cheech is one of those character guys that you can’t help but root for. And after his contract gets bought out, i’m sure there will be a few GMs willing to give him a serious look based on his reputation as a heart and soul kind of player. Maybe Atlanta? Toronto?

YES
He doesn’t have to be in the top 6, if he was on the 3rd or 4th lines he could replace Ortmeyer and put up more points than him too. And he always puts out 110%. It would even be a slap in the face to Ott if he came back and put up more points here. I would prefer 500k, but 1mil is alright.
I love
my Chachi and I was devastated when he got traded. So yeah, for a reasonable salary, I’d love to have him back.

but I had to vote no…he just wouldn’t quite fit in anymore. But who knows maybe coming back is motivation enough for him to ‘do better’? I dunno…
High sticking, tripping, slashing, spearing, charging, hooking, fighting, unsportsmanlike conduct, interference, roughing… everything else is just figure skating.

… but we don’t have that choice, at any price.
Still, no for me. He’s had two good seasons in his career. Maybe he just needs to go to a different team. Ottawa just seems depressing to me…
Still, I don’t think he’s going to have any sort of new motivation if he were to come to the Sharks. Getting number 14 again isn’t exactly the cure he needs IMHO.
How cool? Think Steve Nash...
"Go Sharks!" -Me
I don't know that motivation is the ingredient that is missing.
I have never heard anyone here or anywhere question his effort. I have always felt that this is a confidence issue ever since his injuries – that and of course the new rules benefiting faster players more than slower players.
i think he has always been mischaracterized as a top 6 winger. He had that great flash in the pan year winning the RR, but realistically i’ve always seen his style of play and skill set as a 3rd or 4th line guy. Gives the full effort, works hard in the tough areas, skating isn’t the greatest…and he just happens to have the shot that a top 6 might have. people (especially the media) however expected him to be this top line winger which he could never live up to. I would be totally fine with having him on the 3rd or 4th line at a contract about what we gave Manny last year. 700k range.
I don’t see Cheechoo as a grind type player. He isn’t stable on his feet, gets knocked down easily. He fights in the corners but doesn’t back check effectively. I just don’t see him in a 3rd line role. His greatest asset was his shot, and if he can’t bury that anymore then I just don’t see him being a better fit on a 3rd line than a guy like Mitchell, Malhotra… hell, Jed Ortmeyer fits the role better and we’re letting him walk.

Doug Wilson sign cheechoo cheap!
I hope San Jose could sign him very cheap and scores 25-30 goals next year!!! It’ll make Senators general manager Bryan Murray look foolish…you don’t turn your back on a hard worken canadian kid!!!!
I don't know about 25-30
He most likely would get 3rd line minutes. Also there isn;t a whole lot of room on the PP either
Yeah - that would be nice to have
I could see if one of the top 6 wingers went down. Cheechoo steps in and pots a few goals and bam he gets his confidence back
Don't do it DW
Let nostalgia go, Cheechoo isn’t a 3rd liner.

jMoneyBrah I like it!!! BUT................
what about the 2 kids……Alex Stalock…I can see him crack the lineup he won 39 games!!! He might become the #1 but I know it’ll take time for him to become NHL ready. Stalock is like Marty Turco with the puck handling &
Nick Petrecki another BIG BODY defense as the 7th defense man.
I hope Modano signs in San Jose!!!!
By all accounts (and I think DW might have said this as well), Stalock is not ready for the NHL.
He did have 39 wins, but didn’t have a great SV%/G.A.A and he was playing behind one of the better teams in the AHL.

I didn't before, but I agree with this more and more
Stalock probably isn’t ready yet. But I think Greiss can be more than adequate as a starter, so i don’t want to see another goalie signed for more than $2mil a year.
I don't think having Petrecki ride the bench as a 7th is a good idea.
He needs playing time.
Same with Stalock. He got wins, but his other stats were very average. I think another year in the AHL is what he needs.

I dunno, if we can sign Manny and Modano for that much then we won’t have room for Cheechoo. Cheechoo would not make a very good player for our checking line, he’s gotta be with some talented players who can help set him up. Plus Mitchell as a healthy scratch is just a waste of money, might as well trade him for the extra cap space.
probably the lineup is just as good without Cheech
but being that I posted in this thread he is included :D
I wouldn't mind seeing him on a line with Couture and McGinn
That would have the potential to be a very good scoring third line if matched up well. If McGinn or Cheechoo show too many defensive cracks, then you slide Malhotra (please?) or Miftchell up there.
At $750k or less with a two way contract, I think you give him a shot.
Modano is pretty intriguing. But he would also have to come pretty cheap.
...cheechoo...
…if the kid came in with a low cap number, being back w/ the sharks might get him on track…give him a shot…
…cheech took a real plunge after winning the ‘richard trophy’ & now, after floundering around for a few years, maybe a season away from his “hockey home” with the chance to come back to play with the sharks might kick-start his career…
…fans may question his recent play but pretty much everybody out here likes & respects cheech…could be what he needs & if it works the team benefits…if not, the cap hit isn’t too large…

Unless we’re talking insanely cheap, as in <$1 mil, I’d say no. As much as I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Cheech, he’s so injury-prone and seems to just fizzle out without a premiere set-up guy on a line with him.

Bring him in
Why not, he had a great few years in SJ and his wife is from the Bay, maybe he can get back here, settle down, and regain some of his old scoring touch, I’m not expecting him to be a 25+ goal guy but bring him to camp and see if he can earn a spot? But yeah he needs to come cheap.
