2010 NHL Free Agency: San Jose Sharks Cheat Sheet
With the July 1st free agency period right upon us, it's time to take a look at how the Sharks will approach tomorrow's festivities. In general, Doug Wilson has avoided making a big splash on hockey's busiest day, citing the tendency for General Manager's to overpay at certain points throughout the year (with the Trade Deadline and NHL Draft being the others) as a reason for playing it close to the vest.
Wilson, of course, finishes San Jose's organizational allotment of overpayment before July 1st begins.
Hah.
At any rate, what we have here is a meat and bones look at what the Sharks should target tomorrow, along with anything else you need to know heading into free agency.
San Jose currently has $8.965MM in available cap space to use, with nine forwards, six defenseman, and one goaltender under contract. It allows a certain amount of flexibility to sign a notable defenseman during tomorrow's festivities provided a salary clearing move is completed later this summer.
Manny Malhotra, Jay Leach, and Dwight Helminen are the pending unrestricted free agents heading into tomorrow. San Jose is currently in discussions with Malhotra and appear to be pushing hard for him to return. Jay Leach was offered a two-way contract earlier this month, but will test free agency before committing to San Jose's offer.
Unrestricted free agents Jed Ortmeyer and Evgeni Nabokov will not be returning to the team next season.
Devin Setoguchi, Steven Zalewski, and Derek Joslin are the pending restricted free agents who will be on the market tomorrow for teams wishing to extend offer sheets. The Sharks qualified all three of these players earlier this week, and would therefore receive draft pick compensation if they do not match the opposing team's contract offer. A list of those levels of compensation, and the teams unable to go after these players, follows:
The key need for San Jose going into tomorrow is clearly a top minutes defenseman, one who will be able to play against opposing team's top lines and contribute on the penalty kill. The top six currently in place as of this juncture is a cast of players that inspires little confidence in terms of restricting shots against, especially when you consider the lack of a proven starting goaltender heading into the 2010-2011 season.
As it stands right now, the Sharks blueline would likely be considered a bottom ten unit in the league, something that is concerning after a likely downgrade in the goaltending department.
It's an issue that has plagued the Sharks since the beginning of last season, and one we attempted to remedy before the NHL Trade Deadline by proposing various trades that could help improve San Jose's defensive presence in their own end. However, if this article from sjsharks.com is any indication, it's possible that Doug Wilson feels that the need to acquire anyone in free agency tomorrow might not be the pressing issue that some feel is necessary for success:
On the blue line, the retirement of Rob Blake does open a top four spot, but the Sharks already have six blueliners under contract who played significant time in the Western Conference Finals and aren’t pressed to do anything. Younger players like Derek Joslin, Mike Moore, Nick Petrecki and Matt Irwin, to name a few, will all push for time as well.
The fact that the piece acknowledges Rob Blake's retirement as opening up a top four spot is a breathe of fresh relief, but the cloudy language here (especially when compared to the verbiage used when analyzing the goaltending position) seems strange. Of course it's just a general team release, but the varying tone in the article does indicate where the priorities might be placed tomorrow.
In other words, goaltending seems to be where Doug Wilson will focus his efforts.
The Sharks do require a veteran backstop to come in and have the ability to log roughly sixty starts next season between the pipes, but whether or not he does so is unimportant at this juncture-- Thomas Greiss had a strong season in limited time behind Evgeni Nabokov during 2009-2010, posting a .912 SV% and 2.68 GAA. It's possible that he could compete for the starting role considering the fact that he is at an age where development makes his skill set able to improve, but having that competition in net is a definite requirement for San Jose.
In other words, whether or not the veteran acquisition actually logs sixty starts next year is irrelevant, but he must have the ability to do so.
Fear The Fin has highlighted some potential targets throughout the last month at these positions, both on Twitter, the front page, and in the comments. What follows is a list of players at the defensive and goaltending positions that I find especially relevant to the discussion that will take place beginning at 9 AM tomorrow morning.
UFA Defenseman Targets: Paul Martin, Willie Mitchell, Dan Hamhuis, Zbynek Michalek, Anton Volchenkov, Henrik Tallinder, Pavel Kubina, Jordan Leopold, Joe Corvo, Mike Mottau, Kurtis Foster, Toni Lydman, Carlo Coliacavo
UFA Goaltending Targets: Dan Ellis, Chris Mason, Martin Biron, Marty Turco, Ray Emery (if healthy)
Go Sharks.

He’d have to at this point. Depends on what DW is thinking. He may want to keep everyone and fill our remaining holes on the cheap. We’ll see.

I’m starting to really like Kurtis Foster. His size, 6’-5", and his age, 28, are all bonuses. He is second in scoring amount all UFA defencemen, only behing Gonchar.
I think DW might be able to get him in the 1.5-2.5M range. He would be a 2nd pairing guy for sure nut I like the combo of size and offense.
I think the only gamble is as long as his leg has fully healed and isn’t an issue. But guy has to have a ton of character to come back from that.

Kurtis Foster is high on my list too...
He’s the kind of guy DW would like too…puck mover, providing offense. But his size would tend to indicate he could clog some things up on D too.
And after the Wallin signing, Foster is probably in our limited price range…

Exactly what I was thinking about his price!! Je could be a great option. And since DW has more defensive style D-men under contract, height like the offensive production he brings.
I could see him paired with Vlassic.

The thing is, I’m not so sure he’d willingly go play for the team that he broke his leg against. I remember when he was first getting back from the injury, and he had a chance to play his first game back at the Tank, and he refused because it brought up bad memories.

You really think he’ll be that cheap? I would think a guy with his size and his point totals would be worth a lot to a lot of teams. I mean if i were a Pens fan i’d probably be willing to pay Foster pretty much anything under 5 million to fill Gonchars spot nicely.
Foster made $600,000 last season. 2 million would already be a sizeable raise for him. Also his injury concerns after the broken leg will probably make some teams weary.

So his last contract was at 600k. And he’s never produced at those numbers. I doubt any team would be willing to pay him more than maybe 3m. Especially because he’s only a year back from his injury.
It’s possible somebody seriously overpays him but it seems like there is alot of risk too.
I could be totally wrong. I’m no expert by any measure. Just throwing it out there.
by skilletboy on Jun 30, 2010 11:11 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
This might turn out to be one of those classic “July 1 Freakout Overpays” that DW likes to reference.
I’d like Foster for a reasonable number. Great shot, hard and heavy; physical presence; but also not a great puck-mover and, as said above, an injury-risk.
If you could get Foster and remove Huskins, awesome. That said, I’m not sure Foster would have enough of an impact to warrant dumping Clowe to free up the cap room. I’d rather do that for more of a sure thing—maybe only the first five D-men listed above by Plank in the original post.

Torrey Mitchell and Kurtis Foster on the same team? Who's brinigng the popcorn?
Yzerman is a dolt if he doesn’t re-sign Foster to a deal. A right-handed d-man that can control the powerplay. Any team that had that kind of player on their roster would be a fool to trade him…

Epic Burn
at the beginning. Zing!
Also, where did you find out what team has/doesn’t have certain future draft picks?
New WTC up.
DP says that “Wilson hopes to have Evgeni Nabokov’s replacement under contract by Thursday night.”
That’s pretty crazy. Definitely not DW’s style, but very interested. Hopefully he has Dan Ellis in mind when he says that, and definitely not Turco.
That sounds very Turco-ish to me. I’m going to have nightmares tonight.

Ugh it kinda does. Signing Turco just makes no sense to me though. All these rumors make it sound extremely likely that we sign Turco, but if i had never heard any of the rumors i’d say that there was NO WAY that we’d sign him. So i’m gonna say…screw the rumors, Turco will not be a San Jose Shark.
Turco better not be a San Jose Shark. I’d have to go into therapy between now and October…

Question about Cap Space
NHL Numbers says we have 9.7 million in cap space. FTF has consistently said we have 8.9. Where is that 800 K that we are missing?
I’m thinking that it is going to Logan Couture, but according to Hockey Buzz’s Cap Central he is making 1.2 million.
Where is that 800 k going?
not sure but we have like 912k(?) in bonuses.
"Imagine how many banners we would have if I was GM..." - Drew Remenda
Why is Turco in the conversation?
I feel like I see Turco’s name in the Sharks potential future and I feel like we’re not talking enough about how stupid that is. Not only is Turco slightly older than Nabby, but he is even more over the hill and will have around the same cap hit. Cutting ties with Nabby was done for cap space seeing as DW clearly wants to follow the trend of young, cheap goaltenders. If he truly wanted to go in that direction, Turco would make no sense. If we signed Turco, we might as well have kept Nabby. That’s all i’m saying.

It could make sense if Turco accepts an “over the hill” discount, like Rob Blake going from $6M in 07-08 when we acquired him down to $5M in 08-09 then $3.5M in 09-10.
Nabby is going to hold out for a raise, while Turco might be willing to take a cut.
It’s not going to happen. People need to stop freaking out about it. :)

What are the odds
Of nobody signing Nabby, then DW picking him up cheaply? I know, slim. Just had to put it out there. It would throw us fans a curve. Hope Turco is not DW’s answer. Wasn’t it that DW wanted an huge goalie? But he let Karlsson go. Karlsson must not’ve impressed him, or, fooled him into thinking he was going KHL.
Heck, maybe Karlsson just suckered Calgary, for that matter.
It’s going to be a bidding war for top defensemen this year.
Can’t wait to see how it all pans out.

Someone WILL offer Nabby a 5M+ deal. The stability in goal he offers is exactly what some up-and-coming teams will want.
Devin Setoguchi...
I dunno, but those1st and 3rd rd picks are looking awfully tempting should someone offer him a contract in the 3.1-4.6 range (which is likely). I gotta say I wouldn’t be too sad to see him go for those picks and keeping a contract that size salary off the books.
If during the season when he was under contract someone had offered us a 1st and 3rd round pick in a trade for Seto, I would have taken it in a heartbeat.
Maybe... but only from a team like Edmonton so we know the 1st will be quite good.
But I don’t think I’d take that from a mediocre team, much less good team.

I disagree. I think re-signing him should be DW’s highest priority. Our lack of scoring depth beyond the top two lines was really exposed against Chicago, hell, throughout the regular season as well. He’s one of the most important parts of the future of this franchise.

Scoring depth beyond the top 2 lines?
Isn’t going to get any better by resigning Seto…since he plays ON the top two lines…unless you’re suggesting the Sharks drop him or Clowe down to the 3rd line, at which point either would likely be WAY overpaid to be playing a 3rd line role.
Speaking of scoring…the guy had only 36 pts in 70 games, about HALF of what he did last year. He is the archetype for players who simply cannot put up numbers unless he’s playing with Jumbo. Even Seto’s linemates Pavs and Clowe blow him out of the water in terms of point production.
First of all Seto was injured and then when he came back played on the third and fourth lines with the likes of Staubitz or Shelley. He took a while to recover from his injury. And if Seto’s back then yes he plays top two lines but that means Coture provides scoring potentially from the third line unless Clowe is traded. Also we need scoring depth.
