Sharks captain Rob Blake is retiring from the NHL after 21 seasons, a source close to the situation has told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area exclusively.
The source said that Blake is waiting until the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Finals because he did not want to be a distraction while the Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers are still playing.
An official announcement could come as early as next week. When contacted by Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, the Sharks declined to comment on the story. Comcast SportsNet Bay Area also reached out to Blake but he has not returned calls.

Probably my favorite player of all time. Glad to have been able to see him play for us these past two years.
It was inevitable...
But still sad to see him go. He definately went out with a bang, though. Conference Finals appearance as the C, and he played really well to boot. I figure he knew all along he was retiring, so he went balls to the wall this postseason.
He really was a boon to our blueline the last few years. I’m really glad he came here to finish his career.
Enjoy retirement!

I'm gonna miss Blake.
While most of us (including myself) were down on the guy for most of the year, he stepped it up big time down the stretch and into the playoffs and showed he could still play. It’s definitely sad to see him go and hopefully he stays with the team in some kind of front office position.

Always the professional
Thank you, Rob Blake, for being awesome in the playoffs and knowing that your hooking/interference penalties won’t be called when the post-season comes around. I hope you have a great retirement, and get into the Hall of Fame. You totally deserve it.

A long and fruitful legacy
If the story is true, it’s a shame. Like Jeremy Roenick, I think Rob Blake’s impact goes well beyond what we, as fans, can see. Next season, I’d look for it in the play of Marc-Edouard Vlasic. They were pretty much set partners during Blake’s tenure. They might be very different players, but I think it goes without saying that Pickles learned alot from the most feared ass in the West.
Oh Captain My Captain, thanks for a great run.

Goodbye Blake.
He was VERY good during the Playoffs as a leader and a player, and we are going to miss him for sure. Thanks for finishing your career here, and give the C to Boyle or Pavs!
Go Sharks!
