For those that are interested, DTV is airing 2010 playoffs and has shown SJ vs Colorado the last few nights. Showing on NHL Network. Last night was game three. I was fortunate to attend game 2, one of the wildest wins ever.
I’ve been watching the Detroit series over again on NHL Gamecenter since my subscription is still working and there is nothing I can understand on Chinese cable, lol.
I was tempted to watch the Chicago series because I missed Games 2-4 when I left the US but I always turn it off after like five minutes.. =(

I’d be looking at less heard of d for the Sharks to go after. The recent Kurtis Foster buzz is more what I envision of any more signings of defense. Though I doubt it would be Foster considering history

You know what I've thought about way too much?
Who will be our representatives at the All Star Game next season? I mean, we have Thornton, Heatley, Marleau, and Boyle as perennial all stars, and possibly Pavelski and Setoguchi (but likely not). I mean, we were lucky with three representatives last ASG, and now we have four guys who always go.
Oh, and then Couture is probably in the Young Stars game. Because he’s awesome.

and he says the KHL is very attractive to Russian players due to not getting taxed on their pay. He explained that in the NHL, after taxes and all other withholdings the player only sees <half of their salary. Just sayin…

Wilson bungled this good by giving Wallin a huge undeserved raise and Marleau a raise, and going wtih a UFA keeper instead of relying on his system.
What is wrong with you people!!!??? Even if they downgrade and go with Wooster players to fill out the forwards, there is MAYBE 3M left for a D and then they’re right up against the cap.

Yeah If someone goes crazy and offers him 4, 5 mil a year, then screw it take the picks and let Coture fill his spot. But if we can get him back for what hes worth 3-3.5 mil a year then Sharks are better off keeping him.

and there’s plenty of time left for trades. DW always says his team isn’t set until the trade deadline passes. The guy has been solid, so I for one think he has some master plan in the works.

And while losing Malhotra hurts, the Sharks do have a glut of centers. Thornton, Marleau, Pavelski, Couture, Nichol, and Mitchell are all natural centers. We need to get Couture in the lineup, and if we re-signed Malhotra, one of them would have to play wing.
And now this pretty much guarantees that we’ll go with a young/rookie line, likely McGinn-Couture-Ferriero or something. I’m not exactly adverse to that.

There is absolutely no way he’s worth $2.5 M. And if we’re looking at bad contracts, I’d rather have Wallin at $2.5M for one year than Malhotra at that price for 3 years with an NTC.

Like in anything, charge what the market will bear. As much as I like Manny, he proved this year he’s not the playoff difference-maker.

Letting Nabby Walk = Tough but probably correct
Letting Jed Walk = Also tough, and leaves us thin on non-top 6 PKers, but probably correct
Nittymaki = Reasonable in tandem with Greiss
Not matching Vancouver’s money for Malhotra = Smart
Doug Wilson has had a B+/A- offseason thus far, but we REALLY need to get a d-man, otherwise the roster has a real glaring hole.

I think a healthy Wallin could surprise us all, ala Huskins. During the regular season, he was solid in the #4 slot. You could tell he had limited mobility in the playoffs. And to come in against the likes of Detroit and Chicago? A tall order for anyone.
Plus, if Wilson wanted Wallin to stay and not retire or bolt for Sweden, which was being speculated from the time he was traded for, giving him a good cap number and a NTC clause makes him inclined to stay.
Wilson REALLY REALLY believes in Wallin.

Greiss doesn’t have a save% worth mentioning with his 15 NHL starts against weak teams.

Tampa plays in the southeast and Greiss’ save percentage was 0.912. Much much better, than 0.900. Over a half season’s worth of starts at the Shark’s shots against rate from last year that’s 15 goals. When you add that to the fact that Greiss has improved as he got more work in the AHL, I don’t really see how you can argue that he’s worse than Mike Smith.
I dunno. Greiss looked pretty solid in the few starts he got. I’m thinking Niittymaki signed as a vet backup and not a starter.

And Greiss is not a starter yet. But with this contract, he could be in 2 years. I’m rapidly warming to Nittymaki, even if Ellis was had for cheaper. You can argue all you want about Nitty, but Ellis is also unproven. He lost his starting job. Having a more experienced man competing with Greiss is not a bad thing. And $500K in cap space doesn’t mean all that much at this point. There’s a trade brewing anyway if we want to upgrade the d-corp.

i just looked at ellis and nitty’s numbers the pst 3 seasons and nitty seems to have more solid numbers on a far worse team so I’m EXCITED!!! plus he’s bigger and longer and should be able to cover more of the net than nabby!!! I agree. Murray is like a tank, but without the firepower… Plus, tanks are slow. With Wallin oversigned (which is my short way of saying he was signed for too much money), Murray becomes expendable.

Murray is expendable
He’s 30, has little offensive upside, is prone to bad reads, and regressed after a hot start.
He’s obviously been great for us, but he’s not irreplaceable. And if we can get younger or faster by trading him, it’s a fair move.

Agreed. With Wallin serving that role (although I would say Murray > Wallin) Murray could definitetly be moved.
My theory is that DW signed Wallin so he could trade Murray— it gives him another chip to play with outside of Clowe during negotiations. Only reason that contract really makes sense to me.

How? Murray is the only legit shutdown D-Man we have. And the only one who really brings a physical presence as well. I know there are some kids coming up who could bring that, but they’re not ready to play big minutes yet, which Murray provides.

Vlasic is not a shutdown guy. If he were, he would play on the first pairing. We’ll see how productive he is with Blake gone now. He’s been far too inconsistent in his career to call him a shutdown defender. His play late last year was seems to be heading in that direction though.
Vlasic, despite not being on the first pairing, consistently goes against the opponent's Top Lines.
Pairing number doesn’t really matter, it’s more about who that pairing plays against.

Kid played 35 minutes a night on the way to a Memorial Cup
He missed a significant part of the year with injury, but was the leader in TOI the previous season. The only reason he wasn’t this year was because someone thought it was a good idea to play Dan Boyle for 45 minutes a night.

No, he played on the second pairing because he and Blake had ridiculous chemistry and the two of them created one of the best shut-down pairings in the league.

His 1 year contract last year was for 600k dude, and the year before he signed it he had a much better season than he did this season. I don’t think a season with a .909 SV% and a 2.87 GAA qualifies you for a 333% pay increase.
