He'd totally be worth it though.
Just think.. on a GOOD game our forwards get about 2-3 points, right? LeBron averages 30 points a game. I say add San Jose to the list of teams going for him =P
To continue the discussion on Toronto and why they’d be interested in Hamhuis: They’ve traded for Versteeg, Mike Brown, and signed Colby Armstrong. Getting Hamhuis allows them to Kaberle and other D-man for more forwards. Burke likes to trade.
I’m still praying that it’s not DW who he ends up raping in a trade for Kaberle. I can just see Clowe plus 2 high draft picks for Kaberle happening.
I think Burke overpaid for Colby Armstrong, but then I look to Boogaard to he Rangers. 4 years at $1.65 million? They still can’t sign Marc Staal, their best defender, and they sign a player who’s scored 14 points in his NHL career. hahaha

Sounds like the Canucks are setting themselves up for our current situation, cap-wise, or the Hawks situation. On the latter, was signing Brian Campbell worth having to trade two playoff-producing forwards (Byfuglien and Versteeg)?

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
You probably already see this, but compare Campbell’s contributions in their Cup run to the guys they’ve had to trade. That had to hurt, is the point.
He is overpayed for a #3 d-man
But he overall helped them get there. The Most Holy Grail will make them philosophical about the whole thing.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Right. But that albatross of a contract isn’t done messing with their salary structure yet. What if they have to let Seabrook go? It’s made it harder for them to reload and make another push.
In the end I think they’ll be able to trade Campbell and Hossa when they eventually need to create more cap room for Seabrook.
That’s like 15 mill in cap space right there. Plus Huet is gone after this year, and he may ultimately be bought out or sent to Europe this year, or stashed in the minors. If teams like the Rangers can continually find ways to stay cap compliant during a season, I’m sure a smart guy like Bowman can figure out how to keep the team a contender. And if he needs any help, his dad is in the next room.
I’m not so sure about Campbell. Hossa could be traded, as his cap hit is much easier to digest.
The Rangers are a good example of how these signing end up multiplying your woes. The Rangers keep their heads above water, barely, but need to overpay to get free agents to play for them, and have to give up too much when they inevitably have to trade the bad contracts.
For sure
And I can’t be arsed to care, because F*** them! But hey, they have a Cup, they can milk that for YEARS.
Plus, Campbell doesn’t suck. With him, Toews, Kane, Hossa and Keith locked up long term, they’re never NOT going to at least contend.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
For sure. I’d rather be a Ducks fan with a Cup banner and watch my team miss the playoffs than a Sharks fan (which I, doh, am through and through) where I have to comfort myself with “it’s a process, it’s a process, it’s a process” year in and year out.
Take it easy
We’ll have our turn eventually for the cup. This team is still very young, and with the right adjustments in youth and talent we’ll be able to get it. Hockey isn’t just about winning the cup, but about the games leading up to it.
"Don't even start"
by ZombieSkittles on Jul 1, 2010 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, hopefully. You have to admit, though, that it sucks watching the Ducks and now Hawks go from laughingstocks to Cup winners WHILE WE’VE BEEN CONTENDERS.
We have good players and good management (despite the histrionic wrist-slitting going on here today). So we’re better off than a lot of teams. But still.
Honestly it hurts that we lost, not that other teams got their turn. All the teams have the same goal in mind, and only one a year gets that chance. Instead of kicking rocks try thinking of it as another year to try again.

Most defensemen are overpaid now though. Very few are actually worth their big contracts in terms of value. Not many Pronger/Lidstrom’s out there.
The good news is that this year’s FA market is going to substantially raise Seabrook’s price for Chicago. They might have trouble keeping him if they can’t get him to agree to a long-term, cap friendly deal.

We COULD take the approach Phoenix did last year and just hoard up a bunch of solid veteran castoffs who can be signed on the cheap.
Derek Morris, Leopold, Andy Sutton etc. Those guys might get lost in the shuffle of today and be able to be signed for a combined price of what it would have cost to get Volchenkov, Martin, Gonchar or Hamhuis.
Sadly I don’t expect DW to do such a thing. Because he seems to think Wallin and Huskins are answers.
Morris already resigned with Phoenix,.

Leopold is at best a #4 defenseman. He’s better in sheltered minutes, and would just create a logjam in that 3rd pairing with Huskins and Demers.
Mitchell I like, but don’t know how much stock to put into his concussion issues.

Yes. The Penguins are my other NHL team besides the Sharks (one I rooted for before we even got a team here). Kunitz should be healthy for this year. Cooke got resigned. They might be able to resign Guerin for cheap. Tangradi, Jeffrey and Johnson will probably get some time on the checking lines this year. They have 3 great pivots, so they’re going to be fine regardless of who is playing on the wings. And Staal can be used on the 2nd line if they want.
Maybe SJ needs to come up with a DVD touting the area

I know I’m new here, so I’ve held off being overly negative, because I know that looks bad to just join and be a dick, BUT…I declare today the day Doug Wilson officially turned the Sharks into the Giants, neglecting to spend the money to address their biggest need of the past several years.
I know a trade will make me look like a dick, and I’m ok with that. But right now, this really is pretty weak. Lord knows the bay area needs another team that is full of excuses for their questionable salary allocations.

He's done this on Free Agency before.
He prefers to make moves in the trade market. It looks gloomy, but I think it’s too early to declare the sky to be falling.

I’m not saying the sky is falling, and like I said, I’d like to look like the dick, but neglecting free agency year after year is bull, especially when you give sweetheart deals to cover your own questionable trades (huskins, wallin)

I agree, I question why he hasn't made a move in free agency now.
I have a feeling he has a move for some defenseman in mind, though.

This should scare people though
DW’s trades for defensemen in the past have been awful. Rivet was terrible. Campbell was terrible. Boyle is good but not so great in his own end. He always trades for people who are offensive minded and who struggle to defend. If there’s anything the Sharks DON’T need, it’s another puck moving D-Man who can’t protect the back end. We need stay at home guys. I really fear we’re going to trade for Kaberle or something dumb like that.
I really hope DW does trade for Kaberle at this point. We need him.

We've traded for D-men who made us better.
Rivet was an upgrade for us at the time, given how young the d-corp was with Carle, Gorges, Vlasic and the like.
Brian Campbell was the best player available at the deadline the year we got him, and we went undefeated to finish the regular season.
Dan Boyle makes our offense run. It’s why Todd McLellan played him so damn much last season, which was part of the problem.

If you get outbid for a free agent
That’s equal parts bad luck and bad cap management. It’s early to say he’s done nothing. You hear nothing about the offers that weren’t accepted. But Wilson has actively stated he’s exploring trades. I don’t know how much more we can ask of him other than to magically make one of the big name FAs sign with us for the money he offered them.

I would ask you sign people with a long term view of team structure, and not short term cap hits like Wallin, Huskins, and Clowe that hinder your maneuverability.
Witty signature line
Signings like, say
Marleau, Pavelski and Boyle? Plus the term for a guy like Heatley? In addition, he has a glut of young players coming up from Worcester, all of whom can compete for roster spots now and in the future?
Wilson has stated time and again he doesn’t believe in front-loaded contracts, and his history shows he likes deals of 3-4 years, giving him, what he believes, to be maximum maneuverability. And we’ve been active at every trade deadline. I don’t know how upset we can be with a contract like Clowe. For his skillset, the numbers are right. Him not always living up to them is a coaching issue more than a management issue.
Wallin and Huskins have been discussed ad nauseum, so, no need to beat that dead horse.

"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Haha fair enough, I know, don’t upset the regulars with crazy desires to upgrade defense at the expense of a fan favorite.
Witty signature line
Screw fan favorites, I was all for shipping out Nabokov and Cheechoo. I take issue with not signing excellent young players that will be nothing but a benefit to the team for years to come to very reasonable contracts. 4M for his skillset is amazing, it has nothing to do with him being the Big Pavelski.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
I still think they should trade Thornton, and should have let Marleau walk and build around Pavelski. We don’t need 100 point scorers to win games and win in the postseason. Especially since those scorers haven’t done enough in the posteason to warrant building around.
I’d rather build around Pavs, Seto, Clowe, Couture, and build up an awesome D. With all the goaltending depth we have, we’ll be fine there and if we actually tried to stockpile picks we could easily develop more scoring depth quickly. But instead DW likes to trade picks away like candy for big name players who aren’t necessarily always good moves.
I’m sorry, but if the current incarnation of Joe Pavelski is the best forward on your team, and you don’t have 5 other guys as good as him, you aren’t making the playoffs; you become the Minnesota Wild.
It’s true. No way we’d get anywhere close to equal value for him.

Look what we gave up for Heatley. Look at what NJ gave up for Kovy. Look what Toronto gave up for Phaneuf.

The Atlanta Thrashers dealt their captain, an impending free agent, to the Devils on Thursday night for a package that includes defenseman Johnny Oduya, rookie forward Niclas Bergfors, junior prospect Patrice Cormier and New Jersey’s first-round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
Cormier if you remember was the player suspended from juniors for the rest of the year for cheapshotting a dude in the head.

Looks like a bunch of blah players and a late 1st round pick for one of the top scorers in the league.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Not a fan of trading top tier talent
for role players. All in all for Atlanta it was a good deal in the sense that it helps them fill out a team for years vs hangin on to Kovy for last half of a season.
They win this trade since they actually got something back and they weren’t going to challenge for the Cup w/ Kovy
Sharks are in a different situation, there is no way that trading Thornton for role players works for a team with Cup or bust aspirations
They also swapped 2nds with ATL
i.e., NJ got ATL’s 2nd and ATL got NJ’s 2nd.
As awesome as Pavs is
And awesome his is. He is a very good 2nd line center, but not a great 1st line center.
stockpiling picks is great and all. But if you want a cup this year they are useless. I don’t mind if we have to suck ass for a couple of years later if we get the Cup this year.
That seems like a very pessimistic view…especially on July 1, when there’s still months of offseason left to shape the team…

How is it pessimistic? I’m being realistic of our chances. We have lost a good netminder, lost a HOF level defenseman to retirement.
This team isn’t getting any younger. Yeah we’ll have an awesome top line that will score again, and continued development from Seto, Pavs, Clowe hopefully, and shiny new Couture. But our D-Line isn’t going to be pretty and that’s even with a new addition that’s likely to come via trade. Does anyone really think Greiss or Nitty are going to pull a Hiller (who didn’t get out of the 2nd round mind you, Anderson, didn’t get out of the first) or Niemi?
Doug Wilson is forgetting a big component to why those goalies looked so good in the playoffs, 2 of those teams had an ELITE defensive corp. And while Colorado didn’t have Pronger or Keith etc, they still played pretty sound defensive hockey and were really good at blocking shots. Something we don’t have. And all 3 teams also happened to play the Sharks in the postseason, a team that notoriously finds ways to not put the puck in the net against big butterfly goaltenders. Mostly because they never put anybody in front of the net.
We lost a 40 year old defensemen who due to play 10 years ago is going to be a HoF’er. He was never even close to a hall of fame player while playing on the Sharks.
I don’t think our net situation is any worse this year really and we’re not even done yet.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Sure Blake wasn’t what he was in Colorado, but he was a very steady presence on the back end. Wallin isn’t a replacement.
So steady we nicknamed him Captain Hook.
And constantly cried that his 3.5 was a vast overpayment for his aging services.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
He showed in the playoffs did he not? Yeah, the hooking penalties happened when he got caught out of position, he can’t skate like Niedermeyer. 3.5 was not an overpayment though.
Dude whatever
Like E.D. we haven’t gotten any worse really, and there is plenty of time to make moves.
You also forget that the team that beat us in the WCF is not going to be nearly as deep this year. Vancouver is going to be the team to beat this year, and I think we could handle them.
Of course I am still for gettting a #2 DMan.
We are still contenders.
We haven't gotten better either
Chicago has lost depth, but they’re still the team to beat. Until we can match up with their skill, speed and have a shutdown defensive pairing like Keith and Seabrook then maybe we can talk about being true contenders.
You’re also forgetting about Detroit. They’re going to be well rested now after 3 years of grueling playoff battles. They also are getting Hudler back and have a little bit of room to make some more moves.
The Canucks have gotten better and have plenty of D-men at present to make some trades to add more scoring depth. They also have some talented youngsters in the minors that could make an impact in the NHL, or be used as trade bait to get more help. This is something the Sharks don’t have.
Colorado is going to be better as well. LA is going to better too.
We’ll contend sure, but we’re not going to be winning a cup.
You’re basing this on our roster as of July 1st. Somehow only these other teams can still make moves? Somehow for the first time in Shark history Doug Wilson won’t make moves?

As much as I am disappointed by DW, do you think there's he's at a disadvantage?
I mean unfortunately in the media, the Sharks are labeled as “chokers” (a word which has pretty much lost its meaning) and “disappointments”.
Plus, considering they’re a “newer” team, there’s that lack of “I was a huge fan when I was a kid, so I’ll take a slight discount” (at least for a few more years) ala Hamhuis.
I’m not trying to make excuses for DW (okay, actually I sort of am), but that seems to have been an issue for quite some time. For example, Vancouver is not as good as San Jose, but I have a feeling that most people would rather sign with the "Nucks, even if SJ offers more money.

I don’t think the choker thing matters, no. But I’ve never understood why the Sharks aren’t an attractive destination for free-agents.
Yeah, didn't think that choker stuff really mattered to players
But I was just trying to figure out why it happens rather consistently. Sure, Heatley and Malhotra wanted to come here, but the general lack (or, more accurately, COMPLETE lack) of big FA signings is baffling.

Wilson's really reluctant to give lengthy tems, I think
For a lot of guys, the difference between a 4 year deal and a 6 year deal (on likely your biggest contract of your career) is important. Look at Marleau—even with one of our own, Wilson went with 4 years.
I believe he doesn't offer long/backloaded contracts
because it’s not in the spirit of the CBA
…
At least, that’s what I read regarding DW (don’t recall when/where)

It’s like “See your contract in a few years!”
Not Pronger-like “I’m cheating the salary cap, but you can’t do anything about it because I will STOMP YOU!”
How cool? Think Steve Nash...
"Go Sharks!" -Me
I think Swisher meant front-loaded contracts. But the main point of Wilson’s backloaded contracts is that the increased salary comes with expected increases in level of play. (See Vlasic’s contract, as an example. He’s definitely going to be expected to do more towards the end of his contract as he gets paid more.)
In the case of Hossa and Zetterberg, to use the most egregious examples, the end of the contract is tacked on solely for the purpose of lowering the cap hit. It essentially allows teams to give out a contract with what will end up being a average annual value of let’s say $6M for $5M.
Yeah, that’s what I figured. I was just being fun and overly picky.

get them to chuck us a 3rd or 4th round pick or two
Might be a salary dump for picks in there somewhere. I also have a hard time believing they take 2 defensemen.

Well i don’t know how the trades would shake out, i woudl hope DW could get better vlaue for those players than that, but just for arguements sake we can just pretend that that is the trade.
I like the roster you posted. I think it’s competitive. Is Mitchell really an upgrade over Murray next to Boyle, though? And that seems like an overpayment for him. It’s definately a competitive roster, though.

Mitchell is a proven top line defensemen
That was Vancouver’s big whine during the playoffs. They had lost their #1 guy to injury.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
I think Mitchell is a huge upgrade over Murray. He’s a better skater, he’s much better with his stick and equally as good in the hitting department, if not better when it comes to open ice hits (probably dude to better skating ability).
I just don’t know all that much about him. People seem rather high on him, so that would be cool if he’s actually an upgrade to the blueline.

I’m not ever going to be behind trading Murray. can’t do it.
And what’s the advice (Murray’s grandfather, Lars [Lasse] Bjorn) gives him?
"Hit more people."
If he could somehow revolutionize his skating stride
He would increase his value to the team exponentially. That and raise his offensive game from below average to above average
It's alright...
Modano would just be cool. Though I doubt he’d sign here, mainly because we’re a rival with the Stars.
Kaberle? Please… no. There’s a reason why Toronto can’t move him. Mainly, it’s the expensive part. But, no please… please?
And Mitchell at $4M seems like a little too much.
Ferriero, McGinn, Mitchell, and McLaren are in the NHL next year pretty much no matter what (the way I see it). Unfortuantely, we missed out on the big names.
Would loved to have Volchenkov or Martin or Hamhuis at the rates they were signed though… dammit.

Honestly, i’d normally be pretty depressed after all the opportunities missed today but just know that this roster makes me happy. We’d seriously have some of the best defense pairings in the league with this roster imo. We’d also still have at least equal offense; although i expect big improvements from Mcginn, Couture, Heatley, Seto, and Mitchell. So really we SHOULD have better offense than last year as well.
PLEASE DW stop screwin with us and Sign Willie Mitchell, trade Clowe for Kaberle, and work on signing Modano!
In some ways I'm ok with no serious signings today.
Pretty much every dman signing today has had a ridiculously long term IMO. Especially for the Sharks who have some guys in the system who will be competing for top 4 spots. Let’s say that the Sharks did sign one of Hamhuis or Martin. (I’m going to ignore Volchenkov, because despite Ivano M.’s post yesterday, he has shown pretty much zero ability to move the puck at the NHL level.)
I sure as hell don’t want anyone signing for 5 or 6 years at $5M+. In 2-3 years, guys like Doherty, Wrenn, and maybe some of the guys in Worcester will be ready for time in the NHL.
Suppose the Sharks did sign someone for $5M for 5 or 6 years. In a couple years, there will be at least 3 new dmen that will have earned spots on the Sharks blueline. (Moore is definitely in SJ in 2011-12, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see two other guys make it by then too.) At that point you’d have Boyle, Vlasic, Murray, FA signee, and 3 new guys, who probably should be earning spots in the NHL. As they come to RFA, we’ll be wondering why we’re then trading Vlasic away for peanuts to get the cap space necessary to re-sign the younger guys, when we would have just been better off not signing some UFA to a ridiculously large contract, that becomes an overypayment as they exit the prime of their careers, especially for defensemen like Volchenkov that are dependent on their physical abilities more so than smarts.
It’s always better to have too many assets than too few assets. I’m really not excited about waiting on the blueline until some kids may or may not pan out. That’s how a franchise goes from contenders to pretenders really quickly.

Which is exactly why today is disappointing
We needed some key upgrades to just continue to contend. No doubt DW will pull of some brilliant trade (Boyle, Heatley… I wonder who’s next) but I’m not sure if that’s going to be enough.

As fans we all know windows of opportunity close so quickly. Obviously management knows this too, but sometimes I fear management puts too much stock in saying “once so and so gets here” as opposed to “IF so and so gets here AND is effective.” Its elementary and obvious, and yet, sometimes it seems to be such a fleeting philosophy. I’m not even directly this specifically at the Sharks, who in the past I know have executed great trades for good value.
That said, it is my concern that this team is going to spend too much time waiting for that blue line help, and if/ when it gets here, its going to be too late. I don’t know this is true, but I know its worth fearing. Its why I’m so disappointed.
Witty signature line
Your first sentence is a truism
But in 5 years, none of these free agent signings are going to be assets. They’re going to be liabilities that are preventing the Sharks from re-signing their younger better players.
The question isn’t sign a good UFA this year or wait for a kid next year. It’s sign a UFA this year for 6 years and not be able to re-sign the kid, who’s probably better than the UFA by then, in 4 years.
The typical arugment against this is that the window is closing is way overused by sports fans. It was used to justify rental trades (which are pretty much always bad in terms of value). The Sharks sure could use a Josh Gorges around now and a couple of blue chip defensive prospects around now. There really is no fixed window. With good management, a team can transition rosters quite effectively. Both Pavelski and Setoguchi have very high ceilings, especially Seto. I can see them developing into good first liners in 4 years. By then Couture, and some combination of McGinn, Ferriero, Mashinter, etc. should be doing well on the 2nd line. Someone in the system should make a good 3rd line checking center. At some point you have to trust the system will give you good results.
Basically, in reading this, you are saying we should give up the next few seasons and wait for our kids to develop…and hope they all pan out. That’s really all I see here. This sounds like a terrible strategy…

No I’m saying that you shouldn’t be signing 29 year old mid-level UFA’s for 6 years at their peak value because they are going to end up making you let got of someone who would have been better and cheaper. I would have no problem with any of these contracts if they had been for 4 years or less. But unless you expect the Sharks’ developmental system to suddenly turn into crap, it’s pretty much a guarantee a long term UFA signing is going to screw you in the future. If it were up to me I’d trade Clowe for a decent dman that isn’t signed to a ridiculous contract if we can’t get Kubina for a decent cap hit at a decent term. The typical argument used to justify future killing maneuvers is the “window” argument which is stupid.

So you can't trade a player you just signed.
How long does that last for. If it is for the entire first year wouldn’t any one year contract essentially contain a NTC?
Plus what would be the point of signing a player to a one year contract if you are going to trade him.
Thirdly: the price Wallin signed at is a NTC in and of itself
I think you can't do that NBA sign-and-trade thing
Where you sign a player and then immediately trade him (not sure if it’s predetermined as to salary and return).
Wallin can probably be traded sometime during the season, but not right now because we just signed him. Huskins, on the other hand, can be traded at any time

Hedberg isn't much of a goalie
Literally, the guy is small. I’ve seen him in Atlanta over the past few years. Talented, no doubt. And behind a decent defense he could be okay. But his size is a major disadvantage. He needs to come out till the blue line to cut off angles, and that just doesn’t cut it.

My comment about that was a joke. There’s no way we can add Lombardi at present, and getting him would make Pavs redundant considering we have a #2 pivot already. Hence joking about trading Thronton, which I would do, but not to get Lombardi or make Pavs #1.
Hawerchuck over at Behind the Net actually made an argument considering Joe Pavelski a #1
First-line centers aren’t all about points. Pavelski matched up against the best opposing players this season and had 2.33 points per 60 minutes at 5v5, which is slightly less than Thornton and Marleau, but more than Heatley. Last season, Pavelski matched up against 1st/2nd lines, while Thornton and Marleau got sheltered. Pavelski had 1.82 points per 60, which was 5th on the team.
Pavelski gets put out in his own zone a lot more than Thornton and Marleau, which lowers his numbers. But he’s a great faceoff taker, so the Sharks get the puck moving in the right direction. And when he wasn’t playing PP point last year, he outscored Marleau by a wide margin. Putting him on the point reduces his participation in the play and particularly cuts his goal totals.
You’ve got a 25-year-old RFA center who’s your #1 go-to guy defensively late in close games, an exceptional faceoff taker, probably your #1 PK man, can play anywhere on the PP, matches up against 1st lines in his own zone, scores almost as much as the first line does with weaker linemates and was second on the team in EV goals despite missing 15 games…And you’re telling me you think his ceiling is limited?
Just interesting IMO

Hey, I love Blake. And Roenick was amusing. But I’d prefer the Chicago’s approach of keeping it young as much as possible. We need more speed, and that doesn’t come with age.
Chicago’s “young speed” came from drafting in the top 10 of the draft for years on end because they were shitty. Are you suggesting we take that approach? Otherwise, young good players cost an arm and a leg…and are usually signed, locked up, and unnattainable.

Our current forwards
Marleau-Thornton-Heatley
Clowe-Pavelski-Setogutchi
McGinn-Couture-Mitchell
Ferriero-Nichol-McLaren
Do we need to throw that much money out there on forwards? I can understand if we want another penalty killer, because we’re pretty much going ot have to go Nichol/Mitchell, Pavs/Patty with the occasional Thornton/Heatley set.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
I’d say we probably need more experience and, outside of Couture, more scoring potential on those bottom two lines. Come playoff time they could be deadly for us…in the wrong way.
I’d flip Mitchell and Ferriero…see if the chemistry of Ferriero-Couture-McGinn could continue in the NHL. They were a force together.

Thats what I would do
until Mitchell shows me some offense I like him on the checking line, plus it allows Nichol to be aggressive on the faceoffs
I just am not a fan of Mitchell…but if we have to keep him, hide him on the 4th line and let him run around with Nichol.

He's one of the few PKers the team has left
Especially with Ortmeyer gone. Whatever other flaws Mitchell has, and he has many, we need that still.

I still think he has value to the team
The PK and on the checking line. I am all for keeping him unless we can package him in some deal for a #2 Dman
I like Matt Cullen a lot in that role. He can score, he can win faceoffs, and he can play on the PK very well. He’s a better scoring, poor man’s Malhotra, IMO.

Yeah, I’d say he’s not as good as Malhotra in the D end (although no slouch, and would be a constant on our PK), and definately not in the faceoff circle…but he’s much better offensively. I’d take him if we could get him for 2 mil.

Agree on Cullen
I have to say, I was really disappointed by Manny’s playoff performance with the Sharks. 1G, 0A in 15 games is really weak, despite his all-around ability. And the lack of 3rd line scoring once again reared its ugly head in the Chicago series.
That’s why I would still like to address the forwards, despite the defensive problems.
I'd love Lombardi
Didn’t list him though because I see him as very clearly above a reasonable $2 million per range.

‘poor’ isn’t the right word. He’ll make a hell of a lot more in Russia playing in the KHL than he would here. He’d just have to get used to living there, and playing in 8000 seat arenas.

I feel miserable with the way DW dealt with the big free agent D-men today, and to be completely honest, if I knew that DW wouldn’t sign Martin, Volchenkov, Hamhuis, Leopold, or even Coburn, I’d much rather have Nabby now than Nitty…. especially with the huge downgrade on D.
Wow Interesting day so far, I am really bummed out about Manny but not at that price and slowly warming up to Nitty. Looking forward to seeing what DW does with our defense. Right now feels like addition by subtraction… but there is a lot of time before the puck drops once more all I can do now is cross my fingers.

Keith is, but Seabrook is due for a big raise next year.
The Hawks are going to either let him walk or wheel and deal again next year to keep him.

Before the beginning of the year DW said there would be major changes if the Sharks did not win the cup.
Well I wonder if the big changes he had in mind were letting the youngsters take over, especially on the D, maybe that’s why he hasn’t made any signings?

Lots of Debbie Downers...
Some of you guys…jeez…. the season doesn’t start for what, another 3 months and you’re bitching about the current roster?
Wilson has said for many seasons now that he doesn’t like to buy into all the hype and overpay for a guy on FA signing day. It’s not like the only defensemen out there that could help this team are FA’s. There is this thing called TRADING for players…which Wilson, frankly, has a pretty good track record of doing.
Chill out, we’ve got PLENTY OF TIME to get a big name D-man.
That's only because we don't have next season's roster to bitch about yet ;-)

What would you all think of having a guy like Stephane Robidas on the team?
I know his association with the Stars is vomit inducing, but he’s got a manageable cap hit, signed for a decent amount of time, is tough as nails, and puts up decent point totals.
NTC is a bit of an issue, but surely we have some pieces that Dallas might be looking for.

Would I be wrong in hoping for Nabby to go unsigned for weeks and become so desperate that he calls DW and offers to play for 2 million a year for say 2 or 3 years.

2 goalies for 4 mil combined isn't as bad as Chicago having 2 goalies for 10 mil combined 2 seasons ago.
Plus, because Nitty is inked 2 mil a year he’d be easier to move than Khabby was.

Drew: Fill in the blank: "When I'm on the ice with Douglas Murray, I..."

I'm pretty sure "sign and trade" refers to the NBA sort of deal
Where teams sign a guy, then IMMEDIATELY trade him away. We can, however, trade him away sometime this season.

plus, even if we didn't, if my scenario actually happened, we'd get about a 3 mil dollar cut into what we pay our goalies, so it would still be cheaper, plus it would give Todd an excuse to rest Nabby more.

3 year 10 million per season?
why not – you get to keep your family here, and maybe win a cup. I’d do it.

Also, the least expensive signing was Francis Boullion @ $1.35M
But, hopefully, DW can start packing in players at a much lower cap hit… :)?

I'm actually a fan of the Niittymaki signing.
Guy posted a winning record and decent numbers on an AWFUL Tampa Bay team with an AWFUL defense.
I am warming up to it, overall I think it fits what we needed. Hes a guy who can play a chunk of games but also give Griess a decent number of starts or vice/versa.
Who’s gonna finish this off? I am going Boyle. - FML! No more OT Predictions from me!
I see him as an expendable guy
Two years just so we could get him to sign… if Griess works out, send Nitty down and let Stalock get a few “practice” starts in.
Then trade away Nitty next offseason, and you have Greiss all ready for the big gig.
How cool? Think Steve Nash...

I guess it was disappointing mainly because of Ellis being available
But it’s not terrible IMHO. He’s actually not awful. Playing in Philly (bad years) and TB (seemingly always bad)… he isn’t terrible numbers wise.
At least he isn’t Turco… ;)
