Wilson Eyes Trade Market as Day One of Free Agency comes to a close

Photo

With Antero Niittymaki being the lone acquisition on the first day of NHL free agency, General Manager Doug Wilson will likely turn towards the trade market in order to fill any outstanding holes he sees in his roster.

The lack of activity from the Sharks today, especially in terms of obtaining a defenseman who could come onto the top pairing, is somewhat of a concern considering it was an area of need Fear The Fin has highlighted over the course of the past six months. However, as we reported yesterday, a release on the team's webpage indicated that goaltending would be the main area of focus for San Jose on July 1st.

As it turns out, that assertion turned out to ring true.

"It happened pretty quick," Sharks acquistion Antero Niittymaki said over conference call. "It was the first phone call I got and that was pretty much it. I signed because when you get to be on one of the best teams in the league, you can't really pass that up."

Niittymaki is a thirty year old goaltender who posted a .909 SV% last season for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Many will remember his brilliant run during the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy, where he put the Finnish National Team on his back and led them to a silver medal.

"Once we made the decision on Nabokov we went into researching the style of play, the type of goalies that were having success in this League," Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson said. "Antero certainly jumped out at us for a number of reasons. He was the MVP of the playoffs when [his team] won the Calder Cup in 04-05, and we really liked his performance in the Olympics in 2006. We've liked him ever since that point."

Was there anyone else the Sharks pursued throughout the day?

"There were a couple other guys we were looking at. We felt there would be a supply of goalies in this market, but we also felt that we wanted to get the guy that we wanted, and we were quite proactive in that once we decided Antero was our guy."

Other notable goaltenders who Fear The Fin highlighted as quality targets were Dan Ellis and Chris Mason. Ellis received a two year deal worth $1.5MM a year with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Mason signed a two year deal worth $1.85MM a year with the Atlanta Thrashers.

Inconsistency has been a hallmark of Niittymaki's career, with the Finnish goaltender displaying periods of utter brilliance that are followed by stretches where he has trouble stopping the puck. He's not the bonafide starter that Evgeni Nabokov was for San Jose, and will likely compete year round for the starting role with Thomas Greiss.

"We have Alex Stalock, who also had a very good year in Worcester last year, and will be coming into camp to compete," Wilson said. "There's going to be a lot of competition, and it will be decided on the ice."

Wilson also indicated that the trade market will be the most likely avenue for San Jose to upgrade their team, citing the free agent period as one where teams tend to overpay throughout the year.

"You're taking a look at pieces that fit," Wilson said. "We've actually been very active in the in free agent market in many ways, re-signing our own players such as Marleau, Pavelski, Nichol et cetera. There's many opportunities out there as we monitor what's going on in the market."

"Free agent frenzy-- they call it that for a reason. We're also exploring the trade discussions, and that's probably where we will spend most of our attention during the next while."

If the trade market is indeed where the Sharks will focus most of their attention, the re-signing of Niclas Wallin does make more sense on a broad level. Doug Wilson is known for his constant fleecing of opposing General Managers in this area, with Dany Heatley, Joe Thornton, and Dan Boyle all coming over via lateral movements.

So how does that tie in to Wallin? With most estimates pegging him in the four to five role next year in San Jose, Douglas Murray has become an expendable piece for the Sharks. It is possible that Wallin was signed in order to give Wilson another chip to play with when negotiating with opposing teams.

Ryane Clowe has been highlighted by Fear The Fin as the most likely casualty, due to his salary cap hit and inconsistent offensive output.

Although the top-tier defenseman have been gobbled up, there still remains some solid middle pairing players that San Jose could pursue in the coming days. Pavel Kubina and Willie Mitchell are both without contracts, and were highlighted earlier on Fear The Fin as belonging to the top ten UFA's on the market. Whether or not the price is right will be an ongoing debate of course, but there is still some value left on the market for a team who desperately requires players of this caliber.

Denis Grebeshkov, Brian Pothier, Joe Corvo, Mike Mottau, Brian Pothier, Shane Morrisson, and Carlo Coliacovo are also players who could find a fit in San Jose.

The organization will have $6.965MM to work with, with Devin Setoguchi and two other forwards needing to be re-signed.

"It's a long way before the season starts," Wilson said.

Taking the current state of San Jose's blueline into consideration, that has to be the most positive sign coming out of the Sharks camp today.

Go Sharks.

So, one day down, and we have a new goalie. For the DW Sharks, that’s actually a pretty active July 1. Niittymaki, if we’ve been listening to DW over the past week or so, is exactly the kind of goalie we should have expected him to sign. Big body, shot blocking, cheaper. Yes, I would have preferred Ellis, but Niitty isn’t terrible. Actually, if he can harness his brilliant streaks and make them longer, he could be a real steal. But we have no way of knowing, and definately shouldn’t expect, that to happen. But at least he’s not Turco, and I can still continue cheering for the Sharks…all of them.

So we’re exactly where we should have expected to be after day 1 of free agency. DW has never made the big July 1 splash, and even though we could have used a new defenseman, and this would have been the year to do it (with so many top D men on the market, prices stayed more reasonable), we shouldn’t be shocked that we didn’t sign one. It’s just not our GMs M.O. Now we head into the rest of the offseason…where DW usually works his magic.

First, the left overs of the Free Agent market. Willie Mitchell and Pavel Kubina are still without a home (as of me writing this), and would both provide an instant upgrade to the blueline. It’s possible that still being around after day 1 will cause their price to drop…something that would be beneficial to us.

Then there’s the trade market. This is where we should expect DW to do the majority of the rest of our tinkering. DW loves to trade. He even said on the conference call earlier today that he was going into “explore trade options” mode. And, well, we should expect nothing else, being as we’ve seen DW work over the past many offseasons.

So, who’s out there in the trade arena? Not sure. Tomas Kaberle is the most prominant name on the list…and one the Sharks could very well be in on. And at a 4.25 cap hit for one more season, he’s definately manageable as far as fitting him on the roster goes. He’d definately help move the offense along, and he’s a really good skater. Not an amazing shutdown guy, but not a fool in his own end. I like the sound of Kaberle in Teal. Elsewhere, Vancouver’s going to have to move a defenseman, after adding Hamhuis and Ballard over the past few days. Names like Bieksa and Ehrhoff have been mentioned as possible trade bait. Bieksa reminds me of a younger old-Blake, in that he has a booming shot, and is a big body who will throw himself around, but will also take some dumb penalties. But he’s pretty defensively responsible…and that’s a good thing for this team. His cap hit of 3.75 for one more year is also pretty decent and manageable. Souray could move, although I"m not sure I’d want him. Needless to say, there’s options out there that DW could exploit and really bulk up our blueline.

Luckily, today is still only July 1. And if history is any indication, now is the time DW really gets to work to shape our roster for next season. Tomorrow, our offseason really begins!

I’m pretty happy with the Nittymaki signing as well. Right before I saw the Sharks signed him, I saw that Dan Ellis was going elsewhere…and I said to myself, Well, if it can’t be Ellis, I hope it’s Nittymaki. No need to add anything to defend him—I actually think DW did a good job of that today (much more logical than his defense of re-signing Wallin!).

More and more I’m warming up to the idea of dealing for Kaberle, but I do dislike the idea of picking up a guy who will likely be around for just one season. And you know, I can understand DW’s hesitation to give out a long-term contract to outside free agents, but if he lost out on guys like Hamhuis and Vochenkov, who aren’t actually that old (so they’ll likely still be playing at a high level when they’re in the late years of their contracts), that’s kind of unfortunate.

Maybe the Wild would like to add another 2nd/3rd line forward in Ryane Clowe in exchange for Brent Burns.

But why trade an asset for a D man when you could have got one via free agency without giving up assets?

That’s what I don’t get about THIS year… I’ve understood and agreed in previous off seasons. But we have cap space now…

I agree DW isn’t claiming this team has been assembled so we can’t judge an incomplete. But some of his decisions are puzzling and frustrating.

Bidding wars. He still has a major asset in Setogouchi to sign plus 2 forwards (unless he fills those last two spots out with rookies which im hopeful).

Not necessarily true. Assuming the first and second line stay the same (Seto re-signs around 3.2M), the bottom two consist of Couture, McGinn, Ferriero, Nichol, McLaren, Mitchell, the D is Vlasic, Murray, Boyle, Wallin, Huskins, Demers, and Niitty and Greiss are your goaltenders you only have about 2.5M in cap space. You would have to dump Huskins, Clowe, etc. somewhere if you wanted a top D FA.

See then were back to that damn Wallin contract. No wallin contract that 2.5m goes to 5.0m. More than enough to have nabbed Hamhuis. I liked K. Foster (admittedly not a top pairing guy but 2nd pair for sure…) and he went or 1.8m.

And we lost Malhotra. 2.5 is steep but again without that Wallin contract DW could have kept him.

by skilletboy on Jul 1, 2010 8:57 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

The most interesting quote today for me…

DW confirming that Stalock will be in camp and competing for a spot. We all know DW pretty well and he wouldn’t say that if he didn’t really mean it.

Many people have not been happy with the idea of Stalock coming to the NHL early but I like it. If he isn’t ready he won’t make the squad. They won’t force him if he simply isn’t ready. But they will give him an opportunity. If he can prove he deserves to play he’ll get a shot. I’d like to see him at least get some pre-season starts.

by skilletboy on Jul 1, 2010 8:19 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

It’s fine if he can win the spot (I suspect he won’t, but by all means, give him the preseason shot). I did not, however, like the idea of RELYING on him to HAVE TO be the guy. Which, now, we don’t have to!

I wouldn’t mind seeing Stalock start off in the minors and come up half way through the season, just like Nabby did when Steve Shields was manning the nets. He then earned the job the following training camp.

by drthunder005 on Jul 1, 2010 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m still very high on Stalock so its good to see he’ll get a chance to compete for a spot, if he can win it great although I just can’t see him taking Griess’s spot right out of camp since they are not going to risk losing Nitty through waivers and frankly another year in the AHL is probably best.

Didn't DW say that Stalock wouldn't be in the NHL this season?

On the radio or something…

Either way, I think it’d be nice to see Stalock get a few starts (even just 2 or 3) to have him test the waters (provided we won’t lose Nitty/Griess if either one has to be sent down). Seeing as we got Nitty, I’d like to see Stalock get just one more good year in the AHL before having him ACTUALLY compete for the NHL.

Man...

all of the above points you guys have made are good ones, but I just feel so butt-hurt right now. Malhotra to the f**kin nucks and then nittymaki’s the goalie we were eyeing. Not trying to proclaim the world is ending or that I know more than DW its just that teams who are winning the cup are so stacked with talent on all contract levels that they literally have to win it before they lose half their team. It just doesn’t seem like that with the sharks right now, it just seems like they are content with having a good core and then praying every year that the half ass talent they get from the market will somehow not lose them a series (which it usually wont in the first 2 rounds but cmon, that’s the difference between us and chicago this year). But if we tear everyone to pieces using our own prospects then it will probably feel that much better

by Haie on Jul 1, 2010 8:40 PM PDT reply actions

Our “half ass” talent didnt lose us the series against Chicago out inability to score did. Also Nittymaki was cheap and not a lot of highend talent available in goalies except for Nabby.

That would be fun, but frustrating, because Niitty's should be waaay lower

Nitty playing for Tampa last year, then for Philly pre-Pronger (when they were consistently at the bottom of the East) means that his save % should be around .500 somewhere, but instead he kept it up at .921. However, Nabby, with great teams in front of him those three years, had a similar save %.

I'm not as mad about the Wallin signing now

Seeing as we at least have a defensemen guaranteed.

Sure, would’ve had more cap space to work with. But, considering the general lack of veteran talent that seems to be available, at least we have a guy to fill in a roster spot (albeit at a rather high price)

Sheldon Souray was just put on waivers by the Oilers. Any takers? I’m not that familiar with him. Didn’t he have an injury this past season?

by Megs on Jul 2, 2010 9:14 AM PDT reply actions

Lots of negatives

Contract is brutal, constantly injured, questionable defensively.

That said, he would improve the power play (great shot) and can play a physical style of defense. Just not worth the risk, though.

by Timorous Me on Jul 2, 2010 9:20 AM PDT up reply actions

NO!

No on Souray. He’s got a 5+ cap hit for an aging vet who is a pylon on defense. Think the speed and size of Wallin with Demers defensive chops.

All he has is a booming shot and injury history these days.

Yeah—obviously with the loss of Blake it would be nice to add a defenseman who can play a role on the power play, but if Demers becomes a regular Blake’s loss on the PP would be minimized.

This may be blashphemy

But I’m not opposed to Demers being shipped out. Yes, he’s a PP specialist, but I don’t know if and when his defensive game is going to come around. He probably just needs more experience and such, and I wonder if we have the right set of defenseman to give him that playing time. Is he really going to benefit from playing 5 minutes a night for us, 3 of which will be on the PP?

I suppose that it’s not that I don’t think he’s going to be a good D-man someday, I just don’t know if we can develop him.

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn

by ElvisVF101 on Jul 2, 2010 10:30 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't follow your logic

Demers was a rook last year. He hasn’t even played a full season’s worth of games. So why are you labeling him as a PP specialist? Sure, thats largely how McLellan used him in the playoffs…but it is understandable to shelter your rookie from the highest level of competition on the biggest stage in the NHL. T-Mac did the same with Couture (who had exactly as many PO minutes/game as Demers).

The fact is, Demers got stronger defensively as we went deeper into the playoffs. He was more defensively responsible, more confident and made less mistakes as compared to the reg. season. I can’t wait to see what his “sophomore” campaign looks like. And I can’t think of a better mentor for him than Boyle because their game’s are so similar.

We just traded who for who?!

by BawLa on Jul 2, 2010 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

I suppose I don't share your view

That Demers got stronger deeper into the playoffs. My memory is that he got less and less playing time, especially when Wallin came back, and was basically relegated to the Power Play.

I don’t see where he fits in on the current roster. He’s a #6 defenseman, as is Kent Huskins. Having both of them on the ice together is a mistake. Obviously it would be great to trade Huskins and his salary, but in the end, I think he and Demers are more closely tradable than most people would think. Huskins consistently improved, and would benefit from a better partner. Demers is younger, with more offensive upside. It’s probably smarter to keep Demers, but a decent draft pick for him seems fine by me as well. I suppose it depends if you think Demers is going to help us win now (I don’t believe he is).

I don’t know, I’m just not sold on the kid. Matt Carle was great on the PP, so was Ehrhoff, and neither of them are with us now.

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn

by ElvisVF101 on Jul 2, 2010 11:54 AM PDT up reply actions

Your first two lines there are not mutually exclusive. I remember him getting stronger defensively, but also got less playing time, most of which was on the PP. Just like most coaches in every sport, they would rather play the experienced veteran over a rookie in the playoffs in virtually every situation. And I don’t think that was wrong.

I agree, Demers is a #6 defenseman right now, but I think he has the potential to be a 2nd line defenseman, and at the least would provide some scoring punch on the 3rd defensive line. On the flip-side, I think Huskins is a #6 defenseman with the potential to be a #7 defenseman.

There are only a few Sharks I would say are untradeable, the rest are all available for the right price. That said, giving up on young talent this early would be a mistake. What would be the point of getting a draft pick for Demers? He has not accrued enough value yet to get a decent pick for him and his salary is minimal. If he was involved in a trade, so be it, but at this point it would be selling low on him.

The expectations on Carle were much higher as he was a high draft pick for us. He had a great 1st/2nd year campaign logging 42 points and a +9 rating. But the next year he regressed greatly. The combination of being in “win-now” mode, the regression of Carle with high expectations on him, the acquisition of Campbell at the end of that year expecting to re-sign him, and Carle was traded. Ehrhoff on the other hand, was looking like a 30 pt/ +10 defenseman for a few years until 07/08 when he somehow forgot to get the puck on net. He bounced back the next year in terms of points (when they told him to take a little bit out of his backswing) but wasn’t very good defensively in McLellan’s system. Thus with his contract size, was expendable in the pursuit of Heatley.

My point of this review of Sharks history is that while Demers may be generally similar to Carle and Ehrhoff, he has not had half the service time that they did when we gave up on them. Furthermore, Demers has actually had a better rookie campaign than both of them and was much less touted. You can cite the difference between Wilson’s and McLellan’s systems, but at least Demers appears to fit in McLellan’s system.

The way I see it, play Demers this year, and see how he continues to develop. I personally don’t think any prospect that shows any signs of promise should be given up on until you fully know what you have in them. Unless of course if you are getting the right guy in trade.

We just traded who for who?!

by BawLa on Jul 2, 2010 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I saw Demers play all playoffs and he’s not really bad defensively. His up ice pass is amazing i havent seen stuff like that in a while and i think he will get better hes what 21 years old? huskins i dont think is getting any better, we also may have seen the best of him this year

After Edmonton buys him out

We can talk about his pros and cons. But I think even removing his cap hit as a con, he still doesn’t make sense for us. We have a PP quarterback in Boyle. And we like to have a forward play the other point anyway.

We still need a shutdown partner for Vlasic. If we didn’t sign Wallin, I’d consider picking him up, but I still think we don’t have a good partner for him. But objectively, at about $1.5M to $2M, he’ll find a home after the buyout.

I don't get all the hate for Mitchell

I mean, yeah, I saw him play last season. But this is the kind of guy you can be patient with—he’s young, his cap hit isn’t that bad, and it’s not like he’s taking up a spot on one of the top 2 lines or blocking any younger players with real potential.

And he finally—at the end of the season and into the playoffs—showed some of the speed that makes him a useful player, and with a whole summer to build on that (and not recuperate from injury) maybe next year he will be back to being a solid 3rd line, PK guy for us.

Of course, I wouldn’t be opposed to putting him in a package deal for a defenseman, but I’m also not sure what Mitchell’s value is right now. So it might be better just to keep him and hope he gets back to where he was two years ago.

Well two years ago

He was an exciting rookie with potential, who had shown speed, sound defensive play, and scoring pop on the third line. That’s a player worth investing in.

Ferriero-Couture-McGinn
MacIntyre-Nichol-McLaren

Seems like a better bottom two lines than anything with Mitchell in it…and I don’t know anything about MacIntyre except that he’s bigger and likes to hit people, which is exactly what I want out of my 4th line. That third line could put up some real points if they are given ice time! Mitchell has speed, and nothing else. He can’t score to save his life. But his speed is a tradable asset that could help us upgrade the blueline, and for that reason alone it makes sense to use him to sweeten the deal for the right blueline acquisition.

I think it's a contract issue

In Sept.‘08 he broke his leg during the preseason, returned to the WooSharks Jan.’09 and was almost immediately re-injured, missed the rest of the regular season before finally joining the Sharks for 4 playoff games, 0 points.

That offseason Mitchell was an RFA and rewarded a 4.1mil/3yr contract….

(Reminds me of Huskins)
So with that in mind, resentment may spawn from watching Mitchell still trying to recover and reach the potential DW already paid for. Just assumin’

Good News Regarding Souray

According to Pierre LeBrun:

Sheldon Souray is available for nothing in return after Edmonton put him on waivers Friday, as the Oilers are praying a team will pick up his big contract. You can rule out the Sharks on Souray; no interest there.

There are a few more details about the Sharks’ and Kings’ interest in a top-4 defenseman, with all Kaberle discussions on hold until after the long weekend. To me, though, it’s just a relief—like yesterday when we didn’t go after Turco—to hear that DW has no interest in Souray.

Interesting that Mark Eaton today received a 2 year, $2.5 per contract from the Islanders. Granted, the Isles probably had to overpay to get him, but the Sharks may have had to overpay to keep Wallin (based on him simply waiving the NTC for the trade last season). Eaton is 33 and doesn’t possess much of an offensive game, is solid, if unspectacular on defense, so the comparison to Wallin is fairly solid, I’d say. And I feel a little less bad about Wallin’s deal—though I still wish we’d just gone in another direction.

by Timorous Me on Jul 2, 2010 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions

The more I look at it,

the more Wallin’s contract looks like a handshake deal, made when he came over last year that DW is honoring.

Also, seeing these HUGE numbers for d-men flying around out there, $2.5M isn’t looking as bad as it did a week ago.

A guy with Modano’s talents who’s likely to come very cheap would make a good replacement for Manny. Why not at least make contact to find out how much he’s looking for. Well that’s even more worrying then, because that could mean that DW doesn’t intend to trade Clowe (or Seto, but that’s a good thing imo), which means our blueline probably won’t see any major improvements.

by Khaaz on Jul 2, 2010 11:05 PM PDT up reply actions

could, would, should. You’ve spent a lot of time this offseason typing about what you think DW ought to be doing, which is fine. We all speculate. But when he doesn’t follow your prescribed plan, you freak out! Its only July 2!

Maybe DW wants to make trades involving draft picks and Huskins. Maybe he wants to sign W. Mitchell and Seto and be done with it. Point being, just because he isn’t following your plan, doesn’t mean DW isn’t going to set up this team in a manner that he best sees fit to compete for the Cup.

by ZeroIndulgence on Jul 2, 2010 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions

wtf are you talking about?

Excuuuuse me for speculating and giving opinions during the freaking offseason. Maybe we should all just stop posting and remain quiet til the beginning of the next regular season.

I actually made a big post earlier today in that “i wonder” fanpost talking about the possible reasoning behind DW’s controversial decisions this offseason and why they actually make sense.

The only thing i said DW should do is upgrade the blueline, which i think we can all agree on. In order to make any real improvements we need to free up some cap space since we have less than 3 million cap space assuming we resign Seto (which we definitely should imo).

I don’t think Huskins and draft picks are going to get us a top 4 defensemen, unless we give up some serious draft picks which probably wouldn’t be a smart move anyways, but that wouldn’t give us enough cap space to sign a top 4 defenseman anyways.

So yeah, Clowe seems like our most tradeable asset. He has good trade value, he’d free up a lot of cap space, and we now have Logan Couture who looks like he could fill the open spot in our top 6.

If DW is planning on using Couture to center the 3rd line then that could mean a few things, which is where the speculation comes in; and speculation is the name of the game during the offseason. Does DW plan on keeping our defense pairings the way they are? If not, how does he intend to do that with out limited cap space? If he intends to trade Clowe (maybe for Kaberle) then who does he intend to take his top 6 spot if not Couture?

That’s what offseason discussions are about. If you don’t want to participate then don’t, but don’t come in here like, ‘Bro STFU! DW knows best and he’s not gonna follow your stupid plan! DW is gonna do what the fuck DW wants to do!’

by Khaaz on Jul 3, 2010 12:57 AM PDT up reply actions

It’s a matter of phrasing. There’s a big difference between “man, this would be awesome…” or “I wonder if the Sharks could do this,” than “DW better do this,” or “DW better get on this.”

Many of the returning players on the Sharks are talking about this year being “unfinished business”. D upgrades are one thing but Modano might be too much. Plus I bet he isn’t taking much of a discount.

Not Mitchell, Not Souray, Not Bieksa...Yes to Jan Hejda

We’ve already talked about who would fit best on this team. Jan Hejda. He’s big, defensive minded, and his cap hit fits perfectly at about 2mil. He’s also only got 1 year left on his contract (I think), and the Bluejackets need pretty much everything so they make a great trade partner. DW could send over a nice chianti and fava beans for this guy. If we’re going to focus any mojo on a player, it should be Hejda.

by SinBin on Jul 3, 2010 3:07 AM PDT reply actions

Hejda would be amazing at his 2 million dollar cap hit. I wonder what it would take to get him exactly. I’m assuming Columbus is looking for picks and prospects.

by Khaaz on Jul 3, 2010 5:16 AM PDT up reply actions

I feel like we still need another puckmoving defenseman as well, on top of Hejda/Willie Mitchell. Kim Johnsson could be that guy, assuming he’s healthy. I also hear good things about Dan Girardi who’s also a UFA.

Signing another defensemen would mean we lose Murray but he might make good trade bait, and I don’t think we have much of a choice now with the Wallin signing.

by Khaaz on Jul 3, 2010 6:01 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m with you on the puck moving thing, which is why I’d be pretty happy should the Sharks trade for Kaberle. I think a lot of teams will be in on him, though. Clowe would be an attractive piece to Burke, though…so we could potentially do something there.

Hejda is awesome, but I think he’s the exact kind of player Columbus keeps in the offseason, and then moves only if they’re out of contention at the trade deadline and haven’t signed him to an extention yet. I think to get him now would cost more than I’d be comfortable giving up, anyways.

Yeah I waaaas all for a Kaberle trade

but if we can trade for Jan Hejda we’d have enough extra cap space to add another defenseman without having to lose Clowe; although we would have to move Murray to open up a spot on D, so there’s extra cap space gained there.

I actually really like Clowe and i feel like he’s a big part of the team, not just on the ice but in the locker room. Also, how awesome would it be if next season was the season Clowe worked out his inconsistency issues? He could be a monster. If it’s possible to seriously upgrade our D without losing Clowe then we should do that imo.

What did you trade for Hejda?

Murray and Huskins?

Doesn’t matter, Murray/picks/prospects/etc. I’ll leave DW to the trades.

The difference being...

Kaberle is known to be on the block…Hejda is not. I’d take Hejda any day of the week, but I doubt he’s going anywhere…yet.

Girardi’s restricted, I believe. Otherwise teams would be all over him—or at least I would be, if I were them.

Does anybody know what’s happening with Brett Sterling?

And theoretically what do you think it would take to get Gagne here

Since you’re a rangers fan, how do you like Dan Girardi? I don’t watch him very much but i hear good things about him. He sounds like a puck moving defenseman who’s also very strong in his own end.

You think Sather will resign him? and for how much?

by Khaaz on Jul 3, 2010 3:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Pfft… Who we should be looking at on the Rangers is Staal. They’re in a contract dispute because Sather only believes in overpaying players other teams develop and not his own drafted talent.

I actually thought Girardi was a UFA, but he’s still an RFA at 26 along with Staal. I think Sather wants to keep both Staal and Girardi, Staal especially. Girardi is probably much more gettable, and he’d have a much lower cap hit than Staal.

I dunno, i’m just throwing possible trade targets out there.

If they’re unable to come to terms they may be more willing to move Staal, thus my suggestion.

hey Krishna that wasn't a slight , i like the Niittymaki signing it was a good move for a good price

lol evilducks you are right about sather with over paying other teams players, look at boogaard. garardi he is just your run of the mill stay at home defensemen, he is not a liability in the offensive zone but he is better in his own end, not overly physical but you will now he is there, he is worth 2.5 million but he will get almost 3 due do sather’s gross salaries he gives out, but he is our second best defenseman behind staal. staal is special and there arent many like him in the league i don’t think anyone could trade for him, but i don’t see why you couldn’t get garardi in a trade he is a soild player.

I think with nitty in goal you guys will like him IMO

Since the face been revealed the game got real

by BL3ACH on Jul 5, 2010 12:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Garardi is going to arbitration most likely and won’t get what he wants (arbitration is brutal). This means a 1 year deal and he’ll walk next year.

Who knows what’s going to happen to Staal. Sather refuses to pay his own players, and I bet this drags on like Dubinsky last year.
