Prospect Post
I was just wondering if someone could help me out with some of our younger prospects. I don't know a lot about some of them so I don't know what kind of hopes/expectations I should have of them in the next few years...
I know that he was picked 28th overall but he did not play well in the AHL. Is he a lost cause or just maturing?
2) Justin Braun & Nick Schaus
The Sharks signed them out of college and both put up 3 assists (3 and 4 games played). How was their overall play though?
3) James Marcou
This guy is listed as 5'7, 155lbs. Is he going to be a permanent AHL player or could he happen to put on some height and weight to play in the NHL. He put up 3 points in the 4 games he played.
4) Steven Zalewski
62 points in 78 games isn't bad, however, that -13 is a little worry some. I don't know too much about Zalewski.
5) Cam McIntyre
To be honest, I don't know anything about him...
Thanks for the help.

I would like to know more about Cam McIntyre
but I can’t find much information on him. Anybody have any insight?
It appears as if he is expected to make the team in San Jose
as his deal is structured so that he gets the same amount if he is in the AHL or NHL and I am pretty sure that the organization doesn’t usually give AHL contracts worth $600,000
Yeah, I'm guessing 4th line RW.
I like his size 6’1" 225. He’s going to be a beast as long as he can skate a bit.

Petrecki: Youngest player on the youngest team in the NHL. He’s a big, mean, physical defensemen. Learning the pro game takes time, he’s only been in the AHL for a year but was a dominant force in college. He’s not a lost cause at all, but don’t expect to see him in the big leagues next year.
Braun had a good showing in his short time last year in Worcester, was also a stand out in college. Again, young and has potential, but don’t expect to see him that soon.
As far as AHL defensemen, barring injury, expect to see Moore (similar to Murray) or Joslin (kind of the Kubina/Souray mold)
Zalewski centered the top line that put up a ton of points this year. Fast center, good vision, not that big. Has potential.
Don’t know the rest.

Zalewski did not center the top line for much of the year. He was on Couture’s wing which did inflate his numbers somewhat. It’s actually doubtful if he’ll ever make the NHL as a center, mainly because he is absolutely terrible at taking faceoffs. He’s sort of hit a wall 2/3 of the way through the season both of his years in the AHL. He was qualified though, so I guess the Sharks still think he has potential.
Petrecki: From all reports he looked completely out of place in the AHL and probably should have been playing in the ECHL and getting more ice time. He’s too used to being able to simply overpower everyone and needs to work on his agility. He’s obviously not a lost cause at the age of 20, but I think lowered expectations are somewhat in order.
Both Braun and Schaus seem to have done much better than Petrecki. According to some guys in Worcester, they both steped in right away as reasonably effective middle pairing defensemen. Braun’s more on the puck moving side, similar style as Vlasic defensively, while Schaus is a bit more physical. Moore will be playing in the NHL in 2011-12 season as a 7th dman at the least since he has a one-way contract for that year. He’s a slightly more mobile Murray with probably less brute strength. Souray is a great comparison for Joslin. He does sort of seem to have plateaued developmentally though. He’ll need a good training camp to make the team.
MacIntyre is a power forward type player who was pretty much NHL ready in terms of skill coming out of college. He probably would have been the top college FA signing if it weren’t for his injury issues. In the time he played he was supposedly quite dominating. My guess is that the Sharks think he can play a 3rd or 4th line role in the NHL pretty easily. I wouldn’t mind seeing a McGinn-Couture-MacIntyre line.

Developing players takes time. I wouldnt be mad at my Dwarf Meyer lemon tree if after planting it I expected to immediately start baring fruit. Although it did, so I guess my Lemon Tree is more like Vlasic than Petrecki.

The reason Schaus and Braun transfered so well is because their style of game transfers better right away to the pro system. Petrecki relied on pure athleticism and size to get his job done in college, which just won’t work nearly as well in the AHL. The game picks up speed in the pros so Petrecki needs to improve positioning and timing. For a big guy, if those are off then you look terrible. Get those back on point and suddenly you’re a beast.
I’m interested to see how he does this year. Certainly not a lost cause, but people thinking he was going to jump to the NHL right away were short sighted.

What style of game do Schaus and Braun play?
And i have hope for Petrecki… I am wishing that he could partner with Vlasic in the next 3-4 years
They’re both more cerebral than Petrecki. They use positioning and good sticks to defend as opposed to pure brute strength like Petrecki did in college when he’d just bowl people over. That doesn’t work anymore once you’re facing guys who can skate and actually have some strength. The other guys didn’t have his physical gifts so actually had to have good positioning and such while Petrecki could get by on overwhelming force in school. A bigger faster Nick Schaus is actually what Petrecki would be if he develops. Schaus plays a strong simple game and has a good shot, but isn’t really as big as you would like to be playing a physical defensive game.
i’m taking that the fact he was benched through the calder cup playoffs is a sign that he is not going to be in the nhl next year. like him though a little worried like you

Good skating guy for someone so huge
Took a pretty big step forward this year. Had career numbers and was arguably the number 1 dman on a team that also had Erik Gudbranson the #3 overall pick in this year’s draft.
From a couple of games I’ve heard on the radio, he’s a little weak on his skates, i.e., he falls over a bit too easily, and could use some more agility. I’d give him another year in the OHL. Bringing up defensemen too early is never a good idea and can greatly lengthen their development period.
