True. And it was pretty inevitable that it was going to happen, but still. I was sorta hoping they’d forget about it like they did with the RFA offer sheets and just let us have him.

Just realized, though, that it’ll likely mean we’ll have to wait longer for Setoguchi to sign, since he (or, more likely, Doug Wilson) was probably waiting for all the free agent stuff to be done with to sign.

If you don’t resign Niemi, you’ll have to find a starting goaltender who will play for 2 million or less; and hopefully he’s good and can start a lot of games because your backup is completely untested and doesn’t have great AHL numbers.

Hawks seem to think Turco will play for 2 million, i dunno about that, he turned down a 2 million dollar offer from Philadelphia already.

You guys probably won’t be able to resign your former 1st rounder Jack Skille also.

BASELESS RUMORS by Mr. Plank

San Jose is looking to move Devin Setoguchi for a top three defensive defenseman, provided they are able to obtain Tomas Kaberle for Ryane Clowe from Toronto. After those pieces have fallen into place Wilson would then extend a three year $1.5MM offer sheet to Jack Skille.

Blackhawks now have $113K of cap space, and only 15 players signed. They almost have to waive Huet and eat his salary in the minors just to do anything. They’re not going to be able to give Niemi the salary he’d get in arbitration. They’ll have no goalies and need three other players besides just to have the minimum roster.

LeBrun is saying they’re now trying to move Brian Campbell. Let me just include my hard-hitting analysis on that: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

$5.6M, actually (yeah, Huet’s contract was HORRIBLE).

But still, they likely can’t match Niemi’s arbitration offer, at least without moving another player, and then would have no goalies and $5.8M to sign 6 players, which is around $900K per player, for 2 goalies, 3 forwards, and 2 defensemen. I know the Sharks are going cheap on goaltending, but spending less than $2M total on the position makes me cringe, especially since their bottom two defensemen likely won’t be all that great.

Do you know something I don't?

The arbitration offer isn’t set yet…and if you look at his regular season it’s not terribly impressive and the playoffs were great. I think it’s entirely possible to get him signed for less than 2 mil, which would be the most they could give him and still have enough room to sign the two other spots they need.

by 2883 on Jul 12, 2010 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Niemi’s agent could try to build their case off of Halak’s contract which would probably give him a pretty favorable arbitration.

Who’s gonna finish this off? I am going Boyle. - FML! No more OT Predictions from me!

by Sharkzilla on Jul 12, 2010 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Halak was a backup for 2 years

Niemi was a backup for 1 year. The arbiter has more freedom to cut the difference of the two contracts himself.

by 2883 on Jul 12, 2010 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Halak has two full seasons under his belt, Niemi one. Halak’s statistics were much better than Niemi’s in year one, as well as having much better statistics in year two. I think they’re pretty iffy comparables when you take sample size and raw stats into account.

Wouldn't say much better

Niemi had more W’s better GAA and more SO’s. Halak had more TOI and a greater Sv %.

by 2883 on Jul 12, 2010 12:43 PM PDT up reply actions

SV% is pretty much the universal determinant for goaltending, I think. With the number of shots Chicago gave up in games it makes shutouts and GAA much easier to obtain.

Granted that should give him a little bump, but with only one year under his belt, a contract around $2.0MM for one year doesn’t seem that unlikely to me— at the very least it will be closer to that than the $3.75MM Halak is getting.

Also regarding this

You’re not allowed to use comparable contracts as evidence anywayThe evidence that can be used in arbitration cases:

  1. The player’s “overall performance” including statistics in all previous seasons.
  2. Injuries, illnesses and the number of games played.
  3. The player’s length of service with the team and in the NHL.
  4. The player’s “overall contribution” to the team’s success or failure.
  5. The player’s “special qualities of leadership or public appeal.”
  6. The performance and salary of any player alleged to be “comparable” to the player in the dispute.

Evidence that is not admissible:

  1. The salary and performance of a “comparable” player who signed a contract as an unrestricted free agent.
  2. Testimonials, video and media reports.
  3. The financial state of the team.
  4. The salary cap and the state of the team’s payroll.

by 2883 on Jul 12, 2010 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Halak wasn’t an unrestricted free agent though, he was an RFA like Niemi.

Playoff run is definitely important, but I think that with only one season under his belt, the arbitrer sees those dual .910’s in the regular and postseason and realizes that this is a very small sample size for a player whose statistics are just about league average. Fair point though, as Niemi did have a very good series against San Jose. I just think that may inflate our perception of what we think he is worth— the rest of his postseason didn’t approach those levels.

by 2883 on Jul 12, 2010 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Campbell and Huet are the reason they have cap problems. If i was them my first moves would’ve been to send Huet to the minors or some European league, and then give Campbell away for free to the Islands or Thrashers or something. Then boom, they have 13 million cap space to resign all their important players. They could’ve even gone after a free agent defenseman to replace Campbell, or resigned Kim Johnsson at a cheaper price than his last contract.

by Khaaz on Jul 12, 2010 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Huet can't be sent to the minors yet

but he will be jettisoned to the minors for sure. Campbell you have to have a taker… and it’s possible that a move like that is in the works but for all the hate that Sharks fans have for Campbell, the Hawks fans love him and without Campbell the Hawks do not win the Cup…

by 2883 on Jul 12, 2010 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't see any teams taking on that contract, except for maybe the Isles.

They need to get to the Cap Floor, and that would certainly help. But I don’t know who else would take on that contract.

Well yeah i doubt any cup-winning team would’ve still won the cup if you removed 7.14 million cap space worth of assets from it; although the Hawks would probably be the most likely to still be able to do it.

Either way, that has nothing to do with anything. Campbell really should be moved, but hopefully the Hawks aren’t able to do it.

Actually, thank you very much DW!

Seems Bowman felt that Hammer was actually going to cost MORE than the 14M/4 years, especially the later years. So matching a reasonable offer was really easy…didn’t need to think about it for a week even. So net/net DW actually lowered the Hawks cap in coming years. Well done!

How is it BS if DW himself said that Hammer is one of the top 3 d-men?

3.5 mil for 4 years is a steal if you think about it like that. Sure it hurts the Hawks since they were probably hoping to get him for around 2.5 per, but 3.5 for a player of his talent is a great deal.

by Ban on Jul 12, 2010 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

It's still a good deal.

I probably wouldn’t taken Pavelski at anything under 5 mill too, but fortunately we were able to sign him for 4 mill before he even became exposed to offersheets.

by Khaaz on Jul 12, 2010 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Never said it was planned

Stanbow himself said that it caught him off guard since teams don’t really give out offer sheets to RFAs all too often. But is it fair value for a 23 year-old player of his talent? Definitely.

You guys made our off-season tougher though, that’s for sure.

by Ban on Jul 12, 2010 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s not a bad deal, but you can bet it’s a worse deal than one the Hawks Could’ve done had other DW not gotten involved.

by Khaaz on Jul 12, 2010 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Unless of course

someone else offered him 4.2 mil or more. 3.5M for him 2 years from now will be an easy steal. Like the Buff/Eager/Sopel trade, where the Thrashers just took the pressure off and didn’t allow others to screw the Hawks more. I thought this was going to be a LOT more bloody than it has been. Now if the Niemi arbitrator comes in on the low side for our ROOKIE goalie, we keep Toews, Kane, Hossa, Seabrook, Keith, Campbell, Hammer, Brouwer, Sharp, Bolland, Kopecky and Niemi. I’ll take it. Much easier than if DW would have offered a little more.

by husler777 on Jul 12, 2010 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t see how you can keep Niemi and Campbell. I seriously doubt the arbiter decides Niemi should be paid 1.5 million or less.

by Khaaz on Jul 12, 2010 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions

True

but 2 or 2.2 might be doable. Plus with more negotiating time, could the Hawks back load a longer term deal….say 1.75, 2.5, 3.5, 4.0?

by husler777 on Jul 12, 2010 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions

2 would probably be doable if you didn’t play Kyle Beach, and didn’t resign Jack Skille (both 1st rounders), and you didn’t have any healthy scratches. So really Niemi at 2 million isn’t really doable. I also doubt Niemi would like to do a longer term than 1 year for LESS than 2 million a year.

by Khaaz on Jul 12, 2010 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Skille has disappointed so far

If the hardest hit is dumping him somewhere for future draft picks…meh….I’ll take that. Other worst case is losing Bolland if we want to keep Niemi….but he’d bring back something good in return I’d imagine.

I agree.

I think it is a great deal, that’s without question. But the fact remains that regardless of whether or not it’s fair or below market value, you guys couldn’t afford it. So to then come over here and thank DW, like you guys at Second City weren’t A) Running the Sharks organization through the ground for making this offer, and B) Seriously scared that you weren’t going to match, constitutes Mr. Rosey Shades up there as a total bullshitter.

But in the end, we still got a pretty darn good D-man locked in for 4 years at under market value. And all we had to do is match DW’s lowball offer. Story plays out quite differently at 4.25/per or with a more front loaded deal.

I completely respect and admire the fans that had to suffer under Dollar Bill Wirtz, and yet stuck with the team. It’s just that there are bandwagonners out there that ARE cocky and full of themselves (scroll up to see the conversation I’ve had with my former roommate, who is the definition of a cocky bandwagon fan), and those are often the ones that are the most vocal.

And like has been said, a good way to get on the good side of this blog is to praise Marleau. We were like, his sole defenders last off-season when everyone was calling for him to be traded, haha.

Sometimes things are not what they seem initially

I don’t see any posts on here today from Shark’s fans saying, “Whewwwww!!!!! Glad the Hawks didn’t saddle us with THAT salary albatross for 4 years!”. Seems Sharks fans are disappointed and Hawks fans are pretty happy to deal with the salary issues of having Hammer. So yeah, I stand by the lowball comment….especially DW being a D-man and being able to recognize the talent that was there for him to take. Looking in hindsight (and that might take a year or two), this may very well have been a very lowball offer.

by husler777 on Jul 12, 2010 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

You are really misinterpreting DW's comment.

He did not mean one of THE top 3 defensemen IN THE LEAGUE, he meant he would serve a top 3 role on a team. And lowball? The folks at your blog Second City Hockey pegged him at coming in at 2.5. 3.5 is a reasonable contract for someone his caliber and certainly not too high or too low.

Agree about Second City

but in hindsight, wouldn’t you say 2nd City was wrong? Plus the other question I have is, how much is it worth to not just add to YOUR team, but SUBTRACT from the team that is in your way? As a Hawk’s fan respecting SJ talent, the LAST place I want good players to go is SJ (well maybe Detroit but sides that)! Is that worth an extra 1/2 MIL a year?

I guess. But that means you don’t have 500k-1mil/year for your other players, including your starting goalie.

DW essentially forced your team to pay market value. He wouldn’t have offerred a contract to another team’s RFA that was undervalued. And presumably, the Hawks had made an offer that was significantly lower than the Sharks, or Hammer wouldn’t have signed the offer sheet.

by ievans on Jul 12, 2010 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Do you know?

Someone said Hammer wasn’t eligible for arbitration. I wondered why he didn’t go that route. Do you know anything on the arbitration rules? That way he could have stayed within the organization and gotten a pretty fair offer. Wonder what that award would have been?

by husler777 on Jul 12, 2010 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

RFAs gotta have 4 years of NHL experience, or less if they signed their first contract after the age of 20, to get arbitration.

Teams can only ask for arbitration for a player once. The player isn’t limited.

by ievans on Jul 12, 2010 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Nobody said that here because 3.5 for a 23 year old d-man who plays well in his own end and has some size is a fair market-value contract.

But I’m sure the Hawks would have preferred to try to get Hammer to take a home-town discount and help them out of their salary cap bind. In other words, they didn’t want to pay fair-market value, they wanted to pay less.

Regardless, calling it a low-ball contract is just silly. DW wouldn’t have offered a low-ball contract to another team’s RFA. What would be the point?

by ievans on Jul 12, 2010 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

I wonder if Hammer shopped the league for THE best offer, or stopped at DW’s house? I’d guess some other team would have offered more, but don’t know. Bowman gave him a lot of compliments during the year and even said he has the potential to be one of THE best D-men ever, so I know he didn’t want to lose him. I do wonder if DW thought he’d be able to get him a bit on the cheap because he thought the Hawks couldn’t match the offer with the other cap problems.

by husler777 on Jul 12, 2010 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I suspect no one else offered him an offer sheet, because, for the most part, offer sheets don’t happen all that often. And DW signed him to fair market value in his head, thinking if he got him, great, and if not, we lose nothing. And Hammer, after Chicago potentially lowballing him because of their cap issues, saw a good offer, and signed it, figuring he’d end up with either one of two good teams.

All just speculation, but its a good bet something along those lines is the actual story.

Hjalmarsson would have helped vastly improve the Sharks defense corps this year. There aren’t many quality d-men out their in Free Agency (besides Mitchell, but his health is in question.) Besides Bieksa and Kaberle, is there anyone else being shopped?

I honestly see no other option. You could trade Sharp, but Sharp is a great player at a great price, that wouldn’t be smart. Trading Sharp wouldn’t give you nearly as much cap relief, and it would probably hurt the team nearly as much.

Campbell is booed for a reason. Taking the penalty in the fourth OT that made us lose the series against our biggest rivals, and then leaving the organization for some BS “closer to my family” reason when it was obviously for the money is definitely cause for booing. I mean, nobody is going to boo Manny Malhotra, and he left for a ton of money in Vancouver. It’s all about the circumstances over the departure, not the departure itself.

I think it’s gotten old the whole boo’ing Campbell thing. It was funny first few times. But now? (shrugs) The penalty was bound to happen in that game. We all knew it – Stars had gotten one, so it was just a matter of time that we received one. Campbell was just the lucky bastard to get it. And so he moved on for money and used some lame excuse. Time to move on.

Now boo’ing Pronger and Perry will never get old.

The remaining hawks movables

The untouchable players.
Keith
Kane
Toews
Hossa

The players making roughly a million or less.(I rounded kopecks 1.2 down).
Kopecky
Reasoner
Brouwer
Stalberg
Scott

The remaining roster players.
Bolland 3.4
Sharp 3.9
Seabrook 3.5
Hjal 3.5
Campbell 7.1
Huet 5.6

Sharp is a good player and I dont see the hawks wanting to trade him.
If they were willing to take sign hjal I dont see them moving Seabrook either. They can still trade either of these players though.
The only people left for the hawks to move are Campbell, Huet, and Bolland.

  • Basically the Hawks have no money and have to rely on their minor system/trades to compete this year. They don’t even have a 4 line yet….But yes, they have fire power. Yes, they have skill to move the puck. But who can see Huet playing in over 50 games, consistently and having good numbers?
  • My hat is off to Chicago for trying to get these big guys but as we have seen, the long games (20+ Minutes TOI) takes it’s toll throughout the course of the year. I can’t say Keith, Seabrook, Hammer, Campbell won’t do it; I’m just saying it’s not smart.
  • Ultimately, I have no idea what I am talking about. I have never, probably will never, own or even have someone ask me what I think about this whole cap situation. All I know is that Chicago doesn’t have much money to play with and they don’t even have a serious goalie at the moment.

by Germware on Jul 12, 2010 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Trade him to which team?

If he goes to Europe, he comes back to your team in the offseason. It just means he chews up the 10% overage.

by IsThisTheYear? on Jul 12, 2010 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

The trade

was the least likely option on there. The best we can hope for is a team still needing to hit the Cap floor takes him on, but that’s not gonna happen. The most likely option is moving him to the AHL and just letting him collect his paycheque while his contract runs out.

by Germware on Jul 12, 2010 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Trade chances

are better next yr, of course, with only 1 yr left but with him not playing in the NHL this yr, teams (even those needing to get to the cap floor) aren’t likely to take a flyer on him.

Hawks are probably just stuck with him for the duration of his contract and end up stashing him somewhere next year as well.

by IsThisTheYear? on Jul 12, 2010 2:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Doesn't matter if Huet will be around...

His number will count against the cap until the season starts and you can rathole him in the minors (or GASP! maybe actually play him). You can’t sign Niemi with money that ain’t there.

So matching the offer sheet means that Hawks mgmt thinks the team is better with Huet + Hjammer rather than Niemi + rookie d-man.

by ToddCommish on Jul 12, 2010 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, but you can go over the cap in the postseason, as long as you’re back under it when the regular season begins. I’m sure the Hawks’ offseason plans will work with the understanding that Huet is not going to be on the cap, and they’ll fill up the team, just be over for a while, and then dump Huet in the AHL before the season starts to get back under the cap.

There’s no way they can put together a full roster with Huet on the team.

10% limit for going over the cap

Right up until the week prior to the season starting. Basically, Huet’s contract is right around the 10% buffer they’re given. Which means that Niemi will be almost impossible to sign given their cap constraints. Once the season starts, you can get below the cap by demoting Huet, but until you do, HE COUNTS against the cap.

by ToddCommish on Jul 12, 2010 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, yeah, he is their overage. But right now, they are at the cap with him counted…so they can still go about 5 million over while they build their team.

Convince him to sign with the Islanders for an obscene amount of money. This will solve two issues. One, Kovy will be in the East. And two, the Islanders wouldn’t be tempted to take on Campbell’s contract, thus bailing out Chicago, just to reach the cap floor.

Kovy needs to go to the Island.

Eh…I wouldn’t worry too much about Kovie just yet. Yeah, he’s put up impressive career numbers thus far, but he did it while playing on a lackluster team in a (largely) cupcake division and almost entirely in the regular season. He’s played in something like 7 playoff games ever. Who knows how much of a factor he’ll be in a division as competitive as the Pacific division.

I guess my point is that I’m not soundly in the Kovalchuk boat and I think his salary demands are preposterous for someone as untested as he is. That said, he could very well continue putting up these numbers, and end up being worth every cent.

Another reason to think positive, Sharks fans:

A good, young free agent signed an offer sheet with the Sharks, indicating that he wants to play in San Jose. We actually attracted good, young talent without having to trade for them or grossly overpay! I don’t think that’s ever happened in Sharks history.

So, basically, it means that San Jose’s reputation is going up, and more players not two years away from retiring/given the choice between being waived or traded here will come! Woohoo!

Frazer McLaren is a cheaper and better option than Cheech at 800,000. At some point, we have to let the nostalgia go and realize that Cheechoo would not fill any of our needs despite his (potential) low cap hit.
