This Week in Wishful Thinking: Marc Staal

Back in the days of the old west, when the people were a bored and impressionable mass of lowly farmers, men used to roam the land offering tonics and cures. These men would make outlandish claims, appealing to the population's wildest imaginations. Their proclamations sounded too good to be true.

In retrospect, they were. The men selling their wares were flannel-mouthed liars trying to make a quick buck. Peddling false hope, they played into the restlessness of the townsfolk in a selfish attempt to increase their page views.

Well, they were after money. We're after page views.

Money isn't really an option since we're eating cardboard cupcakes every day of the week anyways. What's more true is that, right now, at this very moment in time, we're guilty of pulling at your heart strings. The title says it all. Plank and TCY are here to work you into a fervor over a player who has very little, if any, chance of donning a teal sweater next year. In all honesty, that may be worse than greed.

And the worst part? We're completely cognisant of it.

However, Marc Staal is a sexy name, and rightfully so. At just 23 years of age he's developing into one of the world's premier shut-down defensemen. He'd fit the Sharks like a glove. He's a better player than Hjalmarsson, he's a better player than Tomas Kaberle, he's a better player than Willie Mitchell, and he's a better player than Kevin Bieksa. If he was a UFA this year, it's entirely possible he would have made more money than any defenseman on the market.

We usually wouldn't even bring him up, assuming that a player of his caliber would be untouchable for any price. Young, elite shutdown defensemen don't exacly flow out the pipeline (unlike goalies, yuk yuk yuk*). But when the notoriously dependable David Pollak brings him up in a print article as a potential target after the Hjalmarsson fallout, there's some credence for discussion.

*With Dustin not blogging anymore, we're pretty committed to getting at least one "yuk yuk yuk" reference in per week.

So take a ride on the bullet train while we wax poetic about Marc Staal.

Star-divide

It's no secret that Rangers GM Glen Sather isn't the most skilled talent evaluator or shrewd negotiator when it comes to unrestricted free agents. Bobby Holik, Scott Gomez, Wade Redden, and most recently Derek Boogard, have all secured a very healthy standard of living thanks to Mr. Sather. He's willing to fork over the cookie dough to the kids before they finish their dinner.

But when it comes to his own RFA's, Sather is notoriously cheap (gasp!). He'll drag negotiations through the mud, refusing to give players close to fair market value. He knows that he has the upper hand in the negotiations, and he holds that card close to his chest.

For example, take last year's contract dispute with center Brandon Dubinsky. Now, Dubinsky isn't all world (like Staal), but he's a young player with upside and a decent track record. He scored 41 points in his contract year, and 40 the year prior. He likely deserved a contract in the $2MM to $2.5MM range, but Sather wouldn't budge.

The team gave Dubinsky a qualifying offer of $522,000 for one year. Dubinsky, one of the Rangers better offensive players, thought the offer unsatisfactory. Instead, he held out until training camp, finally agreeing to three year contract which pays him $1.85MM annually.

Staal looks to be in the same boat as Dubinsky was a year ago. During the draft in an interview with the New York Times, Sather described the gap between the two camps as a "chasm."

In Staal's situation, he's in exactly the same position Dubinsky was in last year. Where that's going to end up is anyone's imagination. He's a good player, we like him - just like Dubinsky: we'd like to have him back, we think he's got a long future, we're going to treat him fairly. Sometimes agents don't recognize that - leverage works both ways.

Although we know Sather is trying to keep the interview even keel, the situation is a bit different. Staal is a much better player, and this isn't a question of accepting a qualifying offer. Staal has reportedly already turned down a multi-year deal from the Rangers front office worth $3.5MM annually.

If Sather is smart, he'd pay Staal a figure closer to what he's looking for (likely around $4.5MM on average) But why, you ask, is Staal worth so much?

Because he's that good.

A quick look at his statistics in comparison to Rob Blake paints the picture of a player who, all at the ripe age of twenty three years old, would immediately be able to come in and play on the top pairing in San Jose.

Last season Staal was, to put it lightly, a motherfucking shutdown machine. In all honesty, this guy could probably break down Brad Pitt's game at a bar and walk out of the establishment with Angelina Jolie on his arm without anyone thinking twice about it. He's a stalwart defensive defenseman with some offensive upside, able to outscore opposing team's top forwards every single night of the week. Premier. Young. Still improving. Huge frame (6'4, 209) with an opportunity to add weight and become even more physical than he already is.

The guy's a goddamn knockout punch to the kidneys of all those who feel the Sharks blueline could use an addition or two (raises hand). He's an upgrade and then some, giving Doug Wilson more than enough opportunity to bolster the offensive abilities of the entire roster.

Steady your loins, FTF faithful. Steady them.

If added on to San Jose's roster, Staal would likely split time between being paired with Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Dan Boyle. Either of these options are intriguing-- with Boyle he would be more than willing to log the herculean minutes San Jose's number one is known for, and with Vlasic, they would comprise one of the most elite young pairings in the entire league. Killing penalties, scoring chances, and the hearts of men and women alike, it would be a surprise to us if we would survive the summer without going crazy with the thought of watching them play together.

The way we see it, there are two possible ways to acquire Marc Staal. Neither of which, however, is really within the realm of possibility. In an exercise of futility, though, let's throw some darts at the wall and see what sticks.

One offer sheet, shaken but not stirred.

Although many thought that Doug Wilson wouldn't dip his tan toes into the pool of RFA's, he signed young defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson to a four year, $14MM offer sheet. Wilson would have owed Chicago San Jose's first and third round picks in 2011 as compensation.

It never got that far, as Chicago matched the offer sheet. However, the attempt by Wilson told us a few things. First, he realizes that he needs to improve his blue line. That's a fact that helps us fall asleep when we rest our little heads on our pillows.

Second, it showed us that Wilson isn't afraid to get the guy he wants, even if it has to be done by unorthodox methods.

Shooting an offer sheet Staal's way would be an unorthodox method, to be certain. However, he'd need to up the dollars from Hjalmarsson's deal if he does indeed want Staal in San Jose. Staal's already turned down a $3.5MM deal from New York; an offer that low would essentially play into their hand. Staal would never sign at that price because he'd effectively just be signing the same contract that the Rangers offered him. They would match, plain and simple, getting the exact deal they wanted.

There are really two levels of compensation to play with here, under $4.63MM would be the first. Between that number and $6.18 would be the second. Anything under that first number would require the same compensation that signing Hjalmarsson would have. The second, and more realistic scenario, would require a first, a second and a third as compensation to New York.

New York would likely match anything under six without the bat of an eye. But is that the tipping point for them? Blue Shirt Banter thinks no, as the Rangers would likely still match the offer and put Wade Redden on waivers to free up the cap space. They have the cash on hand to make a player like Redden simply disappear, no madder how expensive he may be.

"The only type of offer sheet that would force the Rangers to walk away would be a 6.5+ million dollar deal. Mainly because they could waive Redden if they had to," Joe Fortunato of The Banter said over email. "But at the end of the day if you were willing to drop 2 first round picks a 2nd and a 3rd then it might be worth it just to let him go, because he isn't worth 6.5 million dollars at this point in his career."

An offersheet of this size would cause some pretty hefty ramifications on San Jose as well. Suppose Staal were to sign with San Jose. That $6MM would eat up all of the Sharks remaining cap space before Devin Setoguchi had even signed his new contract, believed to be in excess of $3MM annually.

It would likely mean the end of Clowe, Murray, Mitchell, and Huskins as San Jose Sharks. Although some may not be against that idea, remember: Wilson would be playing from a position of weakness, and would have to move these players for no where near their actual value. Moving Clowe for near nothing wouldn't be in the best interest of the franchise, and the cap issues would put Wilson in sticky cap situation to start next year.

The second option is the trade route. A DW specialty.

With an offer sheet essentially out of the running due to the fact that a) New York would match it immediately if it was a reasonable price and b) anything at an unreasonable price wouldn't be tendered by Doug Wilson due to a myriad of cap complications (along with his aversion to overpayment), the trade front would be the most likely possibility swimming in this sea of unlikely possibilities.

And at that point, you know every single piranha in the sea would be circling the New York carcass waiting to get a piece of Staal. He's a hot commodity, and Sather would definitely use that to his advantage.

According to Joe Fortunato of Blueshirt Banter, the price would be quite steep in order to acquire Staal via trade.

"For starters you would be looking at at least a first round pick, and then probably a top prospect. We wouldn't be looking for a defensive prospect in return perse, since we have like 12 in the system," Fortunato said via email. "Maybe one of your younger players like Pavelski instead of a prospect.  It sounds steep, but realize that Staal is 23 years old and is by far and away the best defenseman on the Rangers."

In reality, we think that even might be lowballing a bit. So let's play Devils Advocate for a moment. Pavelski just inked a four year deal which makes him a non-factor in trade negotiations, leaving Ryane Clowe and Devin Setoguchi just about the only pieces Wilson has to work with. Although we believe in Setoguchi just as much as anybody out there in the city of San Jose, the fact that he barely cracked the twenty goal mark last season probably means he isn't as valuable right now as he would have been with a healthy season. Furthermore, the Sharks first round pick will likely be in the latter stages of the first round, making it just about similar to the 31-40 selection in the second round.

If we're Sather, we ask for more and use competition to bid up the price. Plank and TCY have debated this off-site for the last two days, finally coming to the conclusion that it takes at least Setoguchi, a first, and either McGinn/Ferriero + another first to get in the ballpark of where Staal's price would be. Staal is still going to be an RFA next season even if he signs a one-year deal, making him all the more attractive for potential teams who wish to acquire his services. The fact that he's one of the best shutdown defenseman in the League today makes him appealing too, for obvious reasons.

And at that point, no matter which way you cut it, Staal's contract still needs to be signed. $4.0MM is the absolute minimum you get him for following a trade, with $4.5-5.0MM a likely possibility. That cap hit, coupled with the loss of offensive talent in McGinn and Setoguchi, makes it very hard for you to make up the goal scoring capabilities up and down the entire roster.

It's a tough price, and one that Wilson would very likely be asked to pay. With that kind of offer hypothetically on the table, you have to figure he looks elsewhere and attempts to find a much more manageable solution to the defensive issues without sacrificing young offensive talent who will be relied upon to score goals next season (as well as into the future).

We are your sugar water. We are your tonic. We are the fleeting cure that will never materialize.

And, on some level, we almost wish that the near impossibility of this deal would have kept us out of the story editor and instead planted us in front of the XBox with a nice big bag of baked Cheetos.

But during these summer days, when news is running slower than Jean-Paul Jean-Paul at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, it's something we can kick around at the end of the work week.

Even if we'd be better suited to a life in limbo with Dom Cobb.

Go Sharks.

Great Piece!

Here’s my favorite part:

But I would love to have Staal on our team

Yeah that was comedy

I love all the Staal bros and would love seeing any of them in a teal jersey.

Clowe, Ferriero and a first rounder I could part with but not Pavs (obviously) Seto nor McGinn

You also forgot the Chris Drury signing which is also terribad.

While Sather sucks at Free Agency, I think he’s one of the better traders out there (see Gomez to Montreal, Kotalik and co to Calgary). You could try dangling Murray as tradebait. Sather is notoriously infamous for buying into the hype of experienced veterans over young players.

If I were DW, I’d wait for Chicago to officially match if they haven’t already and then make the offer of 4.5/mil per year, assuming Marc Staal signs it. Not to mention the Rangers just drafted another defenseman in the first round so Sather might figure to let him go since he’s stuck with Redden deal for the rest of it as no one is willing to take a sniff on the guy.

by BruinsSelectSeguin on Jul 16, 2010 8:33 AM PDT reply actions

What about Clowe, Ferriero, Murray + a 1st?

Throw in a 2nd if you have to, and then sign Staal to 5+ years for 4.5-5.5 mil a year. The point is if you are going to give up that all that talent to get one guy you have to make sure it is not a one year rental, (maybe a sign and trade?).

When I was asked to write this up

I tried looking through your prospects on Hockey future but really didn’t see anything I liked. That’s where Pavelski came up, because I know that the Rangers had their eyes on him since the Olympics.

As did most other teams. There was no way that Doug Wilson trade Pavelski last year: I saw the rumor on your site at the trade deadline, actually, and I’d have to say that was about as far off as it gets.

Pavelski is about as close to untouchable as any player on any team. He’s a leader, a point scorer, and even somewhat of a playoff hero.

However, the assumption is that Staal is pretty close to as untouchable as Pavs is. Difference being, Pavs already has a contract. I understand that you need that WOW factor for him, but it wouldn’t be Pavelski.

Do not want.

Too expensive and we’d have to give up way to much.

I think people are over reacting a little bit when it comes to our defense. Now don’t get me wrong, I do not want to go into the season with this D, but it’s not as bad as people are making out. I feel we have three 1st pairing defenseman in Boyle, Murray, and Vlasic. Murray and Vlasic are great shutdown defenseman, and coaches and players have said that Boyle’s defensive game is horribly underated. I feel all we need is a good 2nd pair guy who can take minutes away from these three so no one is over worked. I would be happy with it being in the 2-3.5 mil range. In fact, I will go so far to say if it’s a good reliable shutdown man, our d should be considered in the same league as the Flyers’. That’s how much confidence I have in these 3 guys.

Also, I would like to see our bottom pair be made up of Demers and one of our shutdown prospects. I doubt this will happen because of all the people we have signed for the 3rd pair. But I want to get our prospects into the action and really start developing some at the NHL level.

I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!

by Diamondback15 on Jul 16, 2010 8:54 AM PDT reply actions

No way is Murray a first pairing defenseman. He played there last year, yes. And he was ok, but he’s too slow to be able to actually shut down the top end talent…which is something a top pairing shutdown D man has to do. Vlasic isn’t physical enough, and while still good, is a really solid second pairing D man, not a first. Boyle is a top pairing, and while his defense is underrated, he’s not a shutdown guy in any sense of the word.

The problem we have is that while we have good players, they’re being asked to take on roles above and beyond their capabilities. Murray and Vlasic look good on a second pairing if you have that top flight guy to put on the first pairing. Wallin, Huskins, Demers…lower line guys who are servicable…but if asked to play too many minutes, well, we’re in trouble.

We really do need a first pairing defensive guy to make our defense work. We currently do not have one.

I might disagree on Vlasic

I think he’s entering the phase in his career where he IS ready to become a top pairing D-man. He lacks consistent physicality, sure, but pair him with the right guy, someone in the young Rob Blake mold, and that’s a true top PAIRING.

If only there were a young, big, shutdown d-man available, possibly through offer-sheeting or trade…

Lidstrom did very well for himself and Vlasic fits more his mold (with less offensive upside mind you) and isn’t a physical guy. I was impressed a couple of times in the final games of the season and playoffs with a couple of hits Vlasic threw on opposing players. Although some of that may be due to the fact it was Vlasic throwing them. Murray is indeed too slow and really got exposed against the Avs and Hawks.

by BruinsSelectSeguin on Jul 17, 2010 7:24 AM PDT up reply actions

We have a perfect first pair defenseman

if we could only combine Murray and Vlasic into a single player… quick, dependable, physical and great stick-work D-man.

Here’s the main reason why it won’t happen. Why would DW overpay for Staal and give up picks/players if he wasn’t willing to just overpay for D. Hamhuis or P. Martin?

by skilletboy on Jul 16, 2010 9:08 AM PDT via mobile reply actions

Staal is younger and arguably better than either of those two.

Again, that’s also assuming either one of them wanted to play for SJ. They both went to teams seen as contenders as well. I believe Hamhuis wanted to go to Vancouver any way you look at it as he shunned by Pitt and Philly to get there. Martin may have wanted to stay in the east.

Hamhuis reportedly accepted less money for a longer term and to play near his home in BC with Vancouver. Honestly, I think Hamhuis is about as likely to live up to the hype as he is to flop monumentally like Beauchemin did in Toronto. He’s a tad overrated because Weber and Suter are the top pair and the Preds are a very defensive first team.

As for Martin going to Penguins, it’s tough to say no to playing with Crosby and Malkin when they’ve recently won a cup.

by BruinsSelectSeguin on Jul 16, 2010 9:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Both those players are also just examples. Why not offer 4.5-5.0 for hammer then either? DW just doesn’t offer up those contracts to those type of players. I doubt he’d give up so much for Staal.

It’s funny because two weeks ago people were rending their clothes and throwing ashes on their heads at the idea of overpaying for top UFA’s… Now suddenly we want to overpay for a different free agent AND give several top picks??? Am I missing something?

by skilletboy on Jul 16, 2010 12:21 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

There are others that wouldn’t agree. I probay wouldn’t agree either. It’s really difficult to compare. But either way the point is DW doesn’t like to overpay for top talent. I find it difficult to believe that he’d overpay AND give up so many picks..,

I think a trade is more likely that getting Staal.

by skilletboy on Jul 16, 2010 12:15 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

With Staal the only option as far as offer sheets are concerned is just to vastly overpay and hope they don’t match (like Vanek and Penner).

Hjalmarsson wasn’t overpaying and was gambling that Chicago would just take the picks and figure this was a way out of cap issues.

There is a reason this post was prefaced with the notion that it’s a flight of fancy and has almost no basis in reality. Staal would cost far too much to trade for at this point in his career.

by Evilducks on Jul 16, 2010 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

The offer sheet for Hjalmarsson was a win-win scenario for the Sharks. If they pass, the Sharks get a D man they wanted. If the Hawks match, then they have to get rid of another piece of their cup championship team which strengthens San Jose by weakening the Hawk; a conference rival.

by BruinsSelectSeguin on Jul 17, 2010 7:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I love that move, I don’t really see 3.5 as overpaying for Hjalmarsson at all. Maybe a little this year, but if he continues as projected (which seems likely) he’ll be a steal for the 2nd half of that contract.

more importantly I think this roster could win a cup! I would probably play with the top two lines to even out the scoring, (swap Seto with Patty). I would go with Willie Mitchell over Grebeshkov for a true shut down line but it would be for the same money, (3.5) so no problems there. If we can’t get Willie, (or he doesn’t pass the physical) I think Grebeshkov would be my second choice in the FA market.

I only put in Grebeshkov because I don’t want to take the risk on Mitchell. He is a good player, but with Greb, you don’t have to worry about concussion problems (although Greb had a testicular injury last year). And with Grebeshkov, Ivano gets a Russian on the team!

I have the same concerns over Mitchell

BUt if he gets a clean bill of health I would take him over Grebeshkov.

There’s 1 trade involved, Heatley for Staal. The ‘dream’ part of it is that Kovy would be willing to sign for only 7.5 million with us to win a cup, but I don’t think that’s THAT crazy, stranger things have happened.

Ian White isn’t a necessary part of the roster, i just think he would be a great addition as well. He would presumably be picked up as a UFA after the Flames realize they can’t afford his arbitration price.

by Khaaz on Jul 16, 2010 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Ian White coming in (he’s an RFA). Murray, Huskins, and Mitchell going out. They have to go somewhere…and find willing trade partners. We aren’t sticking them all in the minors.

It wouldn’t be hard to find somewhere for Murray and Mitchell to play, we wouldn’t be asking for much…Huskins we could send to the minors if worse comes to worst.

If the hardest part of making that roster happen is finding places to dump Murray, Mitchell, and Huskins then maybe that roster is more realistic than i thought.

by DownRUpLYB on Jul 17, 2010 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Nope. The original plan was for Thomas to be #1 and gradually have Tuuka take over. Thomas didn’t play bad this year except in the W-L ratio. Rask was stellar and with their offensive woes they had no choice but to go with the hot hand to make it into the playoffs.

However, due to the fact that the last 4 Finals goalies have been mediocre or streaky at best, there isn’t a strong goalie market for Timmy so the Bruins will likely not be able to move him so a plan of signing a guy like Nittymaki, Chris Mason, or a Dan Ellis was not in the cards.

by SharkFanSB on Jul 16, 2010 10:36 AM PDT up reply actions

+/- is an awful stat. Thornton was one of our best players in the playoffs. Shit, I really don’t want to get into this argument again. If you aren’t watching the games and drawing conclusions from +/- in a small sample size, there’s really nothing I can say here…

His +/- was bad but he was a beast against the Wings, all the talk of Joe under preforming should have died in that series.

Who’s gonna finish this off? I am going Boyle. - FML! No more OT Predictions from me!

by Sharkzilla on Jul 16, 2010 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Watched every game at least twice. He was great in the Wings series, and was MIA against the Avs and Hawks. This is because the Wings aren’t fast and he needs time and space. Against fast teams like Hawks and Avs he’s far less effective. This phenomenon will only get worse this coming season.

Also, while +/- is a flawed stat it is by no means useless and when a player’s is THAT much worse than all of his teammates it does in fact mean something.

by SharkFanSB on Jul 16, 2010 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Joe's +/- was deeply influenced by the fact that Patty and Heater were largely useless against Chicago

I know Patty had goals, but he was a -2 in a series without much special teams time. Heatley was playing with a torn groin. And that line was on the ice too much. They were playing upwards of 20 minutes a night. Thornton gained a lot of ice and puck possession, but had no one who could do anything with it playing with him. Chicago collapsed to the front of the net every time, and Heatley and Marleau wouldn’t go anywhere near it.

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn

by ElvisVF101 on Jul 16, 2010 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Won’t argue with any of that. As usual I’m just talking bang for buck, and for $7.2 mil worth of cap space I expect better than 22nd in points per game and dead last in +/- amongst centers that played in this years playoffs.

by SharkFanSB on Jul 16, 2010 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Bang for buck might be fair

But this season was a very different animal. Thornton may have underperformed on both the stat sheet and on the ice in previous playoffs, but this season, he was a beast on the forecheck and opened up a lot of ice. He also finally had elite wingers playing with him for probably the first time in his career, but at least one of them was injured, and the other was certainly less than 100%.

I think Joe’s game is the kind of game that won’t diminish too much over time. Legs may fade with age, but hands do not.

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn

by ElvisVF101 on Jul 16, 2010 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

The problem with Big Joe is that as this league gets faster every year there is less and less of a place for players that rely more on their hands than their legs. Lack of team speed in general is what killed us against the Hawks.

Which is not to say that Thornton isn’t capable of being effective with very little time and space (see: unbelievable lightning-quick series clinching setup to Patty against the Wings) but I don’t think he likes to play that way. His default mode of slowing things down REALLY hurts him, and the Sharks, in the playoffs when things are happening that much faster.

by SharkFanSB on Jul 16, 2010 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions

The league might get faster every year

But the game is ultimately won or lost in front of the net.

The Hawks had a MONSTER transition game for sure, not going to deny that or say speed doesn’t help. But that’s where a player like Marleau or Heatley or Setoguchi is supposed to help you.

In the case of Joe, he’s a puck possession guy. That kind of game is NEVER going away, no matter how fast the league gets. If you can’t take the puck from him, or have to commit a second player to trying to get the puck from him, someone’s open. I think the offensive zone set created from a guy like Thornton is never going to go away. That’s how you draw penalties and wear teams down.

And he did all that. His linemates, in spite of being so supremely talented, did little with that space.

Joe didn’t have an outstanding defensive series by any stretch of the imagination. In that instance, yes, speed was an issue. But if we have an improved blueline this season, I wouldn’t worry about that killing us. Our slow footed d has to bear more of the blame of Chicago getting the best of us.

If you want a case of whether hands matter more than legs, look at Calgary. They have, or have had, a lot of fast guys, and an elite player in Jerome Iginla, but they’ve been missing a pure setup man for years. What could be a decent team has become a bit of a joke and is rapidly sliding downhill. By and large, with Joe, this team has improved.

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn

by ElvisVF101 on Jul 16, 2010 11:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Your points are well taken, and I don’t think there’s any question that the Sharks have improved while he’s been here.

However, I think the facts that he was wildly outperformed by a center who at the time was making more than $5 million less than he was and that as a “pure setup man” he had fewer assists than his completely hobbled winger simply cannot be ignored.

I personally don’t believe the Sharks can win the Cup with Joe Thornton as their top center. Then again I don’t really have a great solution for replacing him either.

by idunno723 on Jul 16, 2010 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

No he definitely doesn’t make the team worse.

The problem is that to win the Cup you need more than that. The top line center is arguably the most important player on the team after the goaltender (I know, many will say top defenseman is next, its debatable).

Look at the last 5 Stanley Cup winners: Toews, Crosby, Datsyuk, Getzlaf and Staal are all significantly better playoff performers than Thornton.

Thornton is still a great player, he’s just proven that he doesn’t have what it takes to lead a team to the Cup, and whether you like it or not your top center is a leader of your team.

by SharkFanSB on Jul 16, 2010 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

How is it proven?

Proud member of the "Bring back Semenov" Club !!

by idunno723 on Jul 16, 2010 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Not at all

My logic all of the recent teams that won the cup had top centers that performed MUCH better than Thornton during their playoff run.

Such a performance is one of the many ingredients that are required to make the run all the way to the Cup. If a team is missing that ingredient (which so far it has been, and no I can’t prove Joe won’t make a leap next year just like no one else can prove he will) then their chances decrease dramatically.

by SharkFanSB on Jul 16, 2010 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Pavel Datsyuk’s playoff stats prior to winning the Cup:
2002-03 4 GP 0 points
2003-04 12 GP 6 assists
2005-06 5 GP 3 assists
2006-07 18 GP 16 points (8+8)
2007-08 (SC) 22 GP 23 points (10+13)

The rest have too small of a sample size.

I’m not saying JT will win a Cup. My point is saying Joe Thornton will NEVER win a Cup is a bold, bold statement.

I disagree completely – there’s no hierarchy in terms of leadership vs. position and the correlation between the two, at least anywhere else besides on paper. That’s just another example of how statistics, etc. on paper often are thrown out the window once reality is taken into account. Where there is a correlation is between skill and leadership – and generally, the most skilled players on a team will be EXPECTED to step into leadership roles, as other players will look up to them by default based on their skill on the ice, and stature within the league. Whether or not that should be the way of things, and whether or not said skilled players are capable of stepping or have any desire to step into such a leadership role is an entirely different discussion.

I will concede that Thornton’s easygoing personality can bite him in the ass at times, particularly during crunch time when nobody wants to step up and lead. One point that was made about San Jose on HNiC radio a few months back that really made sense was that the Sharks have no shortage of players that could and should be leaders based on their skill, and that fact was actually screwing them because it seemed every player that fell into that category just assumed that someone else was going to step up and take the reigns. I think that in a way set the table for Pavelski to step up the way he did in the first two playoff series.

I think people still think Jumbo will magically turn into Mario Lemiux one day…. Joe is Joe… He’s not part of the problem. If he continues to play the way he played this last PO’s then we’ll be fine…

Strawman argument. Toews outperformed him on an entry level contract. They had to pay that kid 6+ as an RFA just to keep him going into this next season. He also ended up making about 4M due to bonuses.

People really have to stop using Chicago as the example of the only way teams win a Cup. Chicago wildly overspent the cap, and that was with a bunch of top players still playing under entry level contracts. If you have a team that is so putrid that you have a billion top 10 picks over a long stretch…eventually you will have a deep, young, fast, talented team…until you have to pay them. Chicago was in a very unique situation in that all their good, top draft picks came together at the same time while still cheap so they could add a few high priced FAs and make a serious run. It paid off, but they’re paying for it now.

No one has ever won a cup like that. Ever. And to decide that everyone has to be like Chicago and go get themselves a Toews “making 5 million a year less than Thornton” and rely on that to get us a Cup is stupid. It doesn’t happen that way.

Thornton is a playmaker. He also now has finishers around him. He’s not the guy who’s going to score all the goals..he’s a passer. If his finishers are finishing like they should, Thornton looks like a god. But it’s very team dependant. Don’t overlook him just because he didn’t put up gaudy numbers…he needs his linemates to do that too…

Fuck, I said I wasn’t getting involved in this again…I’m out…

I agree with you...

…but I don’t think there’s nothing to learn about how the Hawks won a Cup.

Anaheim actually had a similar run where their top players were playing on their first or second contract, and thus were performing above their salary. Which allowed them to pay for 2 Norris winning d-men. But Anaheim also couldn’t keep that team together, similar to Chicago.

So I think the thing to take away from Anaheim and Chicago is that you have to take advantage of the small window of time when your top players are “cheap.” Keeping top-tier players at every position isn’t really possible without some players being time-limited value players.

by ievans on Jul 16, 2010 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, Anaheim’s roster implosion was more because Niedermayer and Selanne kept retiring and un-retiring, so they were in a constant state of flux between contending and rebuilding.

Both of those guys weren’t really true free-agents, though, and signed for contracts that were quite cheap based on their level of play. I mean, Selanne was playing for like $2 million, and was scoring 20-30 goals.

Point being, Anaheim was getting great value for them even when they were on the roster, but were at the cap limit because their young players and Giguere were getting the bux.

by ievans on Jul 16, 2010 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s also hard to get awesome, EL contract players without being terrible for a stretch of time. The Sharks have been surprisingly consistant in their winning ways…and thus don’t get good picks. So they contend how they have to…by making trades and paying their talent.

It’s a much more consistant way to always have a shot at the Cup. Winning a Cup is hard…to even be a serious contender is an accomplishment. I fully expect DW’s method to work out eventually.

We need Marc Staal

I honestly think there’s very few deals that don’t make sense for him. While a Staal/Boyle pairing is nice, we need to be realistic. Dan Boyle got burnt out last year, and we can’t have him play those kind of minutes, not if we expect him to be useful over the long haul. A Staal/Vlasic pairing on the other hand, that’ll eat 25 minutes a night without batting an eyelash, and letting Dan play about 20 (and by extension limiting Douglas Murray to 20)? Yes please.

Sadly, the reality of investing $21M in our top line makes this virtually impossible. Right now, I’m really regretting Marleau’s contract (hides from lynch mobs).

In a certain conversation that I may or may not have ever had with someone who may or may not have been General Manager of the Sharks, it was noted that defenseman the caliber of Niedermayer, Pronger and Lidstrom almost never move. This could be one of those rare opportunities. If we miss out, I really hope we don’t live to regret it.

Yep, seems so obvious

Imagine what this team would have been like had we landed Niedermayer after the lockout or done the trade for Pronger the next off season.

I’d do Seto, McGinn + 1st for Staal in a heartbeat. Maybe add another 1st (or 2nd in 2012). Swapping out Pavs for Seto would be a really tough call.. We do have Couture to take his spot. Only if Pavs wasn’t such a gamer, it’d be an easier call.

Then, move Murray and Huskins if needed.

omg Marc Staal?? YESSS I've been waiting for this day lol.

Whyy does SBNation have to crash on the day that I can finally talk about Marc Staal without feeling too guilty??

Marc Staal would be AMAZING, he’s exactly what we need and i think he’s exactly the kind of player DW has been looking for on our blueline. I don’t think it’s that impossible to get him. DW is good at getting what he wants and i can’t imagine he doesn’t want Marc Staal.

Personally i’d be willing to trade guys like Clowe, Murray, Mitchell, and even Heatley for him; as well as ALL of our draft picks lol.

Wouldn’t Murray might have some value to the Rangers? He’s big, strong, and physical, all of which are qualities the NYR’s seem to like. I could see him playing well alongside Dan Girardi, a guy who’s a solid defenseman with some real offensive upside. Couldn’t we do a trade like, Clowe + Murray + whatever draft picks are necessary? Maybe throw in a prospect like Ferriero or even Stalock if he has any real value to them.

I see Marc Staal as being the next Chris Pronger. I really think he could be exactly what we need to get us over that hump in the playoffs.

by Khaaz on Jul 16, 2010 1:41 PM PDT reply actions

I don’t think we should trade Stalock (they have lundquist. And for me, to get Staal, we would have to lose something that would hurt and make us think twice before doing the trade – that’s how good Staal is. I think a more realistic trade would include Setoguchi, Murray and two firsts.
I like Setoguchi, I like him a lot, but like I said before, a trade of this caliber is going to have to make Sather even interested in it. If we could trade Clowe instead, hell (assuming that a trade even does happen), I’ll be so happy.

by kiwi93 on Jul 16, 2010 1:51 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Aren’t the rangers looking for a center? I would think Sather would be asking for Logan Couture to be included in a deal, but we can’t trade him, he’s got too much potential and his cap hit is too low for us to replace him.

Why can’t we just offer the NYR all the picks they could ever want, + clowe and murray? (assuming they have interest in them, which they should really)

by Khaaz on Jul 16, 2010 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions

To be honest, I might think about trading Couture. But the trade then couldn’t Include Clowe or Setoguchi.

by kiwi93 on Jul 16, 2010 2:08 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I would think about it if the Rangers were set on him. It’d still be hard

by kiwi93 on Jul 16, 2010 2:11 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

The only reason i say we can’t trade Couture is because we wouldn’t be able to get under the cap after signing Marc Staal to a 4+ mill contract while also retaining Seto and Clowe.

Maybe if we dropped mitchell as well and got lucky with signing prices, but then who would center our 3rd line if not Couture or Mitchell? We wouldn’t have cap space to sign another good 3rd line center.

Having a guy like Couture who can play in the top 6, or as our 3rd line center at only a 1.2 million dollar cap hit is just invaluable really. If we traded him we’d be losing a great player, and we’d essentially be like losing 2.4 million potential cap space. (since Couture could play top 6 and is 2.4 million cheaper than Clowe)

by Khaaz on Jul 16, 2010 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't forget Leach

has a 2-way contract, so he’s not a shoe-in to make the team on a full-time basis.

Since this thread is already jacked up...

and were obviously hockey deprived. Remember last off-season when Plank suggested this?

Coming to a computer near you on some serious tape delay via Hulu.com, it’s a mothatruckin’ open thread of epic proportions. Game seven of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. Jarome Iginla and the hated Calgary Flames. An entire season boiling down to sixty minutes. Can the Sharks rebound from getting shut out in game six? Will Soupy make another soft play along the defensive zone boards? Can the wily veteran Jeremmmmy Roeeeeeeniiiiick save the day? Tune in Tuesday at 7:00 PM to find out!!!

Would anybody actually be interested in doing this?

Back on topic

We need a Staal. The Sharks have always had family connections. Joe and Scott Thornton, Milan Michalek’s big brother Zybek playing for a Division Rival, Darryl Sutter as coach linking us to the Sutter Clan, drafting the Ferreiro Brothers. It’s only fair we get in on the Staal Clan.

One of Sutter's brothers even played for the Sharks for a little bit.

Now all that is missing are the Staals and the Howes.

Yes

I like those trades and signing’s but I would replace Ryan Clowe with Devin Setoguchi.I would be extremely happy with that roster. But too much for Modano replace him with Afinogenov. And put Torrey at center.I would like to get rid of Heatley U never liked that deal he did.1.384 left.Maybe we could re-sign Ortmeyer, then sign Semonov or Ozolinsh???

It was my b-day this week

so I have been way too epicely drunk/stoned to make specific roster comments. All I will say though is that: trade Seto/clowe if need be, keep murray at all costs, and remember that this is the year. we just came off a wcf appearance and so we need to capitalize on vancouver’s over-abundance of defensemen. They think that reinforcing their d is the answer when none of their forwards besides kesler have the balls to get them to the stanley cup in terms of putting yourself in the line of fire for that odd deflection, etc that will get you over the top. we need some of their reject defensemen which will come cheaper to us and will be adequate to support our godly offense.

by Haie on Jul 17, 2010 1:21 AM PDT reply actions

Clowe to Pittsburgh for one of their Defenseman seems legit.

Brooks Orpik is from the City! I can dream right….

Seriously, the Penguins have a ton of legit defenseman, word is they’re looking for a winger.

If we did trade Clowey for a top 4 blueliner, we would need to go sign a vet foward of some kind, its becoming slim pickins so we would need to make this move soon.

by myk on Jul 19, 2010 5:57 PM PDT reply actions

Clowe for Orpik sounds like a good deal to me.

Logan Couture could replace Clowe just fine i think.

You are freaking out us RANGERS fans – STAY IN YOUR OWN DIVISION. ;) Let us know what you guys think over at www.thedarkranger.com — we are pissed at SLATS and management for not locking up Marc Staal immediately. I wish our own team believed in him as much as apparently The Sharks believe in him.

We hope he remains a Ranger! Sorry folks…
