Setoguchi's Contract

Alright, what's the deal with Setoguchi's contract? I'm new around here (hello!) and I'm just curious what's going on with it, when does it need to be signed by, what people think it means that it hasn't been signed...  I saw some tweets about Setoguchi's contract expiring on Thursday - anyone have any idea about this?

Especially with all the rumors about sharks trading someone like Setoguchi for a d-man, are we not going to see Setoguchi as a shark next year? Certainly DW can't just be "forgetting" about this...

First of all, welcome!

I saw that tweet as well and immediately did some due diligence with regard to qualifying offers, etc. It’s not expiring on Thursday – RFAs have until December 1st to sign a contract with an NHL team or they’re ineligible to play on a team this season. As for why he hasn’t signed yet, well, that’s anyone’s guess. I’m sure it involves a cap hit in excess of $3 million per, so I doubt it’s due to insufficient money, but then again, who knows what amount the QO was for.

The QO has to be for what ever he made last season. I would not worry too much about him not resigning yet, its not uncommon for a RFA to go a while with out being signed and since neither he nor the team filed for arbitration there is not any reason to worry. I guess the other possibility is DW is using him as trade bait but I would be VERY surprised if that was the case.

Yeah. I would hate to see him go through trade, but I’m also curious to see how, exactly, DW is going to get a replacement for Blake. I don’t really want to see any of our players go…

Welcome!!! I don’t know what’s going on with the Gooch, but most of us are either antsy for him to be re-signed or at least hoping for it.

by JenLovesHockey on Jul 20, 2010 9:25 PM PDT reply actions

Welcome to FTF!

And don’t worry about Gooch; As Kid mentioned, I’d be surprised to see him go via trade, and also, there’s a reason he ain’t heading for arbitration! :)

Go Sharks!

I’m also in the not at all worried category. The fact that he didn’t file arbitration and has indicated that he wants to continue to play in SJ are all the comfort I need. I’m reminded of Clowe’s final year as an RFA and that went well into August before he re-signed under a very similar situation.

If September rolls around without a contract I’ll get mildly concerned. October is when I’ll officially panic.

Just have patience. Wilson knnows what he is doing...

Here’s how I think he is using Seto…

GM: Hey, that guy looks pretty good. What’s his name again?
DW: Oh, him? That’s Devin.
GM: Oh yeah! Hey, he’s got a lot of potential. How about a trade?
DW: I’m up for that. But I need a good defenseman in return **Cough**Marc Staal**Cough**
GM: Yeah, Well do I have the guy for you!
//GM offers badass defensive defenseman//
DW: Yeah, He would work out perfectly!
GM: Okay, so Devin for my badass defenseman, right?
DW: Well, I’ve been thinking that this other guy I have would work out really well in your system… Care to take a look?
GM: Sure. I mean, it’s great to have as many options as I can!!
DW: His name is Ryane Clowe… Now hear me out, Clowe is a power forward with great play along the boards, Devin really doesn’t do that. Clowe also put up 10 points in 15 playoff games… That’s pretty good for a power forward now isn’t it?
GM: Wow, I never really thought about it like that. So how about you give me Clowe for my badass defenseman?
DW: Well, you know that I’m giving up a lot in Clowe right?
GM: Yeah, I was afraid of that. How about my badass defenseman…and a third round draft pick??
DW: I think that would work
//DW smirks in the corner while GM signs the form//
GM: I can’t believe that I just got Clowe for my badass defensive defenseman and a third! Man, I’m gonna go share this to the rest of the league to show what an awesome GM I am!!!

This was just a joke for all of you who didn’t catch on!!!

Hmm David Perron just signed for only 2.1 million per year for years with the Blues. He’s a year younger than Seto and put up 11 more points this season than Seto did, but 15 less points than Seto did last season; either way they’re fairly comparable players imo.

Maybe we end up signing Seto at a very nice cap hit of 2.7 million or something after all? (the contract wouldn’t be for more than a couple years though i’m sure.)

by Khaaz on Jul 21, 2010 12:25 PM PDT reply actions

True

But we can’t just base his salary from his play last year. As we all know, Setoguchi had a 36 goal season two years ago that should be considered when structuring his new deal.

by kiwi93 on Jul 21, 2010 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Well his 31 goal season in 08-09 is why i said 2.7 million instead of 2.1 like Perron got. Considering his regression and a bit of a hometown discount, a 2.7 million cap hit for Seto doesn’t seem that crazy.

by Khaaz on Jul 21, 2010 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

was it 31… My bad! I don’t know why i put 36! Although I’m pretty content with anything from $3.2M-$3.5M. You also have to remember that Wilson has a tendency to give his players, say, healthy contracts haha

by kiwi93 on Jul 21, 2010 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah :(

But I hope that maybe he can squeeze out a 2.75 for 2-3 years as Khaaz said :D

Go Sharks!

by Dmitriy on Jul 21, 2010 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I hope his game picks up and he plays well enough that its worth it. :D

by ninakix on Jul 21, 2010 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, who knows with Wilson really, but i don’t think a 1 or 2 year contract at 2.7 million a year would be unfair for Seto.

by Khaaz on Jul 21, 2010 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

That was Patty's total from that year

So both Mason Raymond and Tomas Fleischmann have resigned with their teams

Raymond put up 25 goals and 53 points in 82 games last season – 2 years for $5.1 mil ($2.55 cap hit).

Fleischmann had 23 goals and 51 points in 69 games last season – 1 year for $2.6 mil.

Seto’s stat line of 20 goals and 36 points in 70 games last season suggests that the Sharks could lock him up for a year or two at similar numbers to one of these players. Considering the off year that he had I would love to see the Sharks get a two year $5 million dollar contract for him. This would represent a doubling of his previous salary and still keep him at a team friendly cap hit.

Also because of Seto’s age after two years he would be a RFA again providing the Sharks with a solid bargaining chip for potential trades at that time.

by jMoneyBrah on Jul 28, 2010 12:28 PM PDT reply actions

Those guys got locked up at some pretty solid cap hits. I dunno if we’ll be that fortunate though.

Pavelski’s numbers are nearly identical to Fleishmann’s this year and Pavs got 4 mill lol. Obviously though, Pavs is a lot better than his numbers this season indicate, as is Seto. If Seto gets signed at 3.2 million or less for 3+ years i’ll be downright ecstatic.

OMG PRESS CONFERENCE

What’s this press conference on Monday? Any ideas what they’ll announce for Setoguchi’s contract? Think they’ll trade him? Someone talk about this, please!!
