My favorite on-air call of all time:

Sure is a slow off-season...
Nothing really exciting, although we re-signed a couple of key players.

Do you guys love your Mass Effect 2? I remember you used it for a theme for one of your series or games. In fact that’s the main reason I signed up here in the first place… I love that game
I’m playing through it again… which will mark my 4th time through it… (though the 3rd was more of a speed run trying to get everybody killed. Which is harder than you’d think.

ME2 OWNSSS!
I’ve beaten it 3 times now, and the last time was as a vanguard on Insanity. It was kinda tough at first since your not strong enough to charge in to more than a couple enemies in the beginning, but then it actually got pretty easy once my dude got some levels and research upgrades. It was a lot of fun, Vanguards are sick.
I need to go back and check out the new DLC.
It’s good to see that ME2 still spawns good chatter here.
I beat it on insanity with an infiltrator. Invisibility just proved to be so damn handy.
The DLC has been good. The last pack with the armor is perfect for vanguards, plus they finally made it piecemeal so you can mix and match which bits you like with other N7 stuff. I try and go back and beat the DLC with all of my playthroughs, who knows what random hooks it’ll have in ME3.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Yeah i’m definitely gonna go back and do all the DLC.
How was the infiltrator? I would’ve made one for sure if you didn’t run outta sniper rifle ammo so quick.
Yeah I haven’t paid for any DLC yet only got the stuff you free with your Cerberus card thing. I’m interested to see how much the game changes based on your decisions in the first game. My first play through carried on after Wrex and Ashley died so I’m keen to see what factors they play in ME2 when I play again
They’re not really that crucial to the story, though Wrex at least has fun dialog about remembering old times with you. His replacement is a little less interesting. What I’ve mostly noticed is a lot of tertiary additions, like you run into somebody you knew (and didn’t kill) or you get letters from people. I think the more interesting decision that has a little carry over is the Rachni. I’m curious what the carry over with the Krogan and Geth decisions you make in ME2 will be in 3.
I love the Kasumi DLC, her special ability is fairly awesome so she gets used regularly in my current play through. You also get a really decent SMG from her loyalty quest. The mission pack was also pretty good, much better than the hammerhead DLC. More of Cerberus being evil bastards when you’re not looking.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Yeah I’ve heard good things about that extra mission pack so will have to invest in that before I start another play through. Did you guys play Dragon Age, I love anything Bioware releases, they are amazing
Yeah, I did like the Dragon Age let me be an absolutely horrible person. Shepard in Mass Effect can be a dick/bitch… but nothing compared to the horrible things you can do in Dragon Age.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
I did my paragon play through, still gotta go back and be a bad person for that… same with Fallout 3. That’s like 100 hours of my life between those 2
Dragon Age is the first game where I’ve genuinely felt bad for the things I did to people. In part because the acts you commit are so horrible, but also because the writing is good enough that you have some emotional attachment to the people you’re doing them to.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Sweet. I felt bad when Alistair left me near the end but I wanted Loghain on my squad.
I’ve got the books for ME and DA too. Bioware has me wrapped round their finger. However, I doubt I’ll be buying the Old Republic as it’s a MMORPG but it does sound pretty sweet
I read the ME books… I wasn’t really impressed, they’re completely throw away in the grand scheme of things.
Still, really solid writing for a video game. I’m wrapped up in the plot. My current playthrough is trying to do what I think will be the most beneficial to the final battle.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
I managed to get through without anyone dying first time. Sheppard can die too right but you must do something really wrong for that to happen…
The only way for Shepard to die is to do it on purpose for the most part. You have to avoid every loyalty quest and pick all the wrong people for the jobs in the final mission. It’s probably harder to die than it is to save everybody.
I am proud of my playthrough where only Shepard and Grunt survived.

Nah that alien dude who has the perfect memory. It’s only been like a month and I’ve forgotten already

Yeah… brain fade on my part. Really want to play it through again now, just talking about it. Will be very sad when I finish the third one cause they reckon it’ll only be a trilogy
Bioware will continue to make games. Also, I don’t trust EA will just let ME go away after the 3rd. I imagine we’ll get some side stories or something.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Yes that’s true now that EA own Bioware, I’m sure they’ll want to keep making money off it. You gonna buy The Old Republic, I hate MMORPGs but it’s Bioware… still probably won’t get it but it’s the closest to getting a MMORPG I’ll be

Spent some time down at Sharks Ice yesterday and got to watch about 4 league games. It was really really nice and made the withdrawls tolerable. The last game we saw around 730-830ish on one of the side rinks was SO close to watching the real thing. Guys chirping at each other, solid SOLID goalie man, fast skating, amazing strong SOG, the other goalie wanting to go home, hearing his team-mate say suck it up and even one guy got ejected! Score 7-0 in favor of Solid goalie’s team.
If you have time to kill and you really really need hockey it’s pretty damn good enough to be there.

De nada...
Hmmm… FtF amateur night at Sharks Ice sounds like fun. We could pick sides to root for, get a bit tipsy and have fun screaming for our respective teams. Is it awesome or sad that our hockey entertainment has come down to this?
Mike Babcock's wife thinks Joe Pavelski's a STUD!! Enough said.
I was thinking that but I dunno
everyone always has a crazy schedule. Probably drinking in the lot though, they don’t let you bring your own stuff in and I don’t think you can drink outside of Stanleys.
My bud and I picked different sides…I was more on the losing end LOL. He picked this one team only because one team had this monstrous goalie I swear he was like 7ft on skates. He nicknamed the goalie Beefy so everytime someone tried to shoot the puck at him my bud would say Beefy and beefy would freaking save it! Haha.
I think its pretty awesome that we have the oportunity to be able to just go watch amature guys just play. Plus how cool would it be for the players to have a bunch of people root for them? It’s not Sharks hockey but its still some form of hockey. :)

Defense Defense Defense & More From The Kids
The Sharks need a front line defenseman desperately. I just hope DW has got something up his sleeve that will show itself to the world soon.
I know there is more to come from DW. This is going to be a very interesting season with Nitty in net and plenty of the young players having
more responsibility to step up and be real players. I am talking at you Pav’s line to be consistently productive all year, not just in streaks. I am talking about you Devin, time to get back to 30 goals or more. I am talking about you Logan, to take your talents to another level. I am talking about you Pickle, time to become a bigger part of the defense and special teams.
If we are going to keep up with Chicago, stay ahead of Detroit and all of the young and upcoming teams, we need to step it up even more.

Consider it this way
India had a very famous comeback in 2001 against Australia.
A 5 day test match has 2 innings (each side gets to bat twice). Australia scored so highly in their first innings, and got India out so early in their first innings that India were forced to “follow on,” meaning they would have to bat twice before Australia even had to come out for their second turn at bat. A follow on is very humiliating for an international cricketing side.
On the fourth day, two of India’s batsmen helped start the comeback by remaining at bat for 631 and 446 minutes respectively, putting together a combined 376 runs to completely turn the tide of the match. Imagine taking batting practice for 8-10 hours and NEVER ONCE fouling off a ball. They faced 600 pitches without getting out.

That’s why there’s one day cricket. For all of us Americans with short attention spans.
Although watching a traditional cricket game is a great way to burn through summer vacation. India vs. Sri Lanka is live right now.
Kids in the back seat cause accidents. Accidents in the back seat cause kids.
And T20 which I used to hate but am warming to. A test match is still sweet though. I know cricket is a hard game to get into, I’m still trying with my gf two years on but I’ll forever love it
I like the T20 idea a lot.
It does breaks a lot of tradition, but the batters are more aggressive and take more chances, so its more action packed. Easier for casual fans to consume.
Good luck with converting your gf.
Unfortunately, probably the only way to really get in to cricket is to actually play it.
Kids in the back seat cause accidents. Accidents in the back seat cause kids.
I’ll need that luck. You make a good point about playing it though. There probably are some sports which you can only start to enjoy and understand by playing them. Cricket is probably one of them. I played cricket for over 10 years
However, I’ve never played a game of ice hockey in my life (closest is tiny fun games of roller hockey) and I still love it. I guess it’s just an easier sport to pick up on through watching
Cricket isn't just about playing
It’s a whole culture. It’s kinda like hockey in that regard.
I’m almost of the belief that if you weren’t born a cricket fan, you can’t be made into one. It’d be like trying to become British or become Indian. It can be done, but it’d take a monumental effort.

Well, there is that
But the flip side of it is that all your hard work can be undone in one moment. Batsmen can sometimes be out there for an hour, trying to remain calm and steady and keep the runs coming, but then, in one moment, one little mental mistake, you catch an edge or get under one, and you’re done.
To be out in the sun for that long and not lose your focus has some merit. Given the circumstances: an international test match against the world’s best team who is riding a 16 match unbeaten streak, a streak during which they have regularly thrashed you, and you’re facing a MONUMENTAL deficit in front of your home crowd. It might not be Game 7 against Calgary, but it’s enough to bring goosebumps to a nation of a billion people who live and die with these guys and agree on precious little else.

Some Hockey news
The Rangers signed Frolov for 1 year at 3 million. Not a bad cap hit for a player so similar to Clowe.
The Rangers have no cap space to resign Staal atm, although it sounds like it’s already a forgone conclusion that Wade Redden (6.5 million cap hit) will be waived; but the dude still has 4 years left on his contract. Are they gonna leave him in the minors for 4 years, or maybe buy him out? If they buy him out they’ll have an extra 3.25 million which would be enough to resign Staal at a cap hit under 4.65 million. Maybe we could offer sheet Staal for 5 million, maybe more as long as it’s under 6.2 million (the 1st 2nd and 3rd round pick compensation range). He would totally be worth losing those picks.
I really can’t see the Rangers sending Redden to minors for 4 years. That would be messed up, and it would effectively end his NHL career. It’s not like the Rangers are some cup contending team that needs to make tough decisions like that to stay in contention.
I think a buyout is more likely, and so then is a Marc Staal offersheet. Omg plzplzplzplzplz I want Staal in teal sooo bad.
by Khaaz on Jul 27, 2010 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Redden's career IS effectively over
His current contract takes him until he’s 37. NO ONE is going to take that contract. At 37, he’s going to have trouble finding work anywhere as a UFA, especially if he can’t DRAMATICALLY turn his game around from the form it’s been in at MSG. Again, as long as the Rangers have cash, they’ll waive him. The extra $3.25M in cap space from the waive vs. the buyout just can’t be ignored. It’s a whole ’nother roster player.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
lol dude, obviously you get more money from burying a player in the minors than you would from buying him out, but it’s way more messed up to bury a player in the minors.
Buying Redden out would’ve been the right thing to do; the Rangers would show that they’re responsible for their mistakes and it would give Redden a chance to continue his NHL career by allowing him to sign with another team at a much more reasonable cap hit. Instead they’re probably going to make Redden pay for their irresponsibility by forcing him to play in the minors for the rest of his career.
Agreed on the bad faith nature of it
My point is more a cash-flow issue. The Rangers are not Columbus or Phoenix or Dallas or any of the other teams that have to worry about having cash to meet payroll.
I also don’t think they’re going to worry about the ramifications of demoting Wade Redden. They are a rich club in the richest US market. Attracting UFAs is pretty much a snap for them as they can spend to the cap each year and offer fat contracts to guys like Redden.
I completely agree the right thing to do would be to buy out Wade Redden, but seeing as how they CAN AFFORD to waive him, I see very little incentive for them to do so. In the equation of being nice to Wade versus giving themselves the most cap room, I think they’ll take the money and run.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
I don’t see how Frolov and Clowe are at all similar. Aside from point totals they’re completely different types of players on the ice.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Get out outta WTC-mode where you try to dissect peoples posts and find something to argue with them about!
Clowe and Frolov are pretty comparable players, but that’s not even the point, there’s a chance we could successfully offer sheet Marc Staal dude!
No chance. They’d rather bury Redden than lose Staal. I like your optimism though!
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
I already mentioned Redden getting buried in the minors.
You think a non-cup-contending team like the Rangers would bury Redden in the minors for 4 years? That’s fucked up…and it would likely hurt their chances at acquiring players in the future.
It’s not like they’re the cup winning Blackhawks who want to defend their championship next year, and actually NEED to shed cap space.
The rangers aren’t even in contention so i dunno if it’s a smart move to screw a player over so badly like that. It would effectively end Reddens NHL career; he’d still be getting paid good money, but it would be pretty humiliating for him.
It would hurt them less than actually losing Staal. I just don’t see them giving him up for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd pick.
Since we’re picking on the Rangers. You know what’s funnier than paying Boogaard 1.6 for 4 years? Doing that when you still have Donald Brashear for another year at 1.4 on a 35+ contract that you can’t even bury.
God I love Glen Sather. Whenever I get depressed, I find something he’s done to make me laugh.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Oh!
And they’re still paying Rissmiller 1 mil to play in the minors. I think he’s been doing that for 3 years with them.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
lol man they only let Rissmiller play 2 games after signing him to a 3 year contract, and then they sent him to the minors to never return, even though he puts up pretty good numbers in the minors.
The Rangers are fucked up, so maybe they will just let Redden rot in the minors for 4 years. If i’m an NHL player i sure as shit don’t want to go to the Rangers considering how easily they’re willing to bury players in the minors, and how Sather tries to take advantage of his RFAs.
I obviously don’t think they’ll keep redden on the roster and let Staal go, but i assumed that they would buy Redden out and maybe create an opportunity for an offersheet.
So long as they have cash
The Rangers will happily bury Redden in the minors. He actually comes back onto the roster between seasons without the hassle of re-entry waivers because he has a one way contract. They’d have to waive him every year. They would likely buy out the final year of his contract only just from a cap space standpoint. You get $6.5M for waiving him and $3.25M for buying him out. Over the long haul, so long as their cash-flow is consistent, I would imagine that they’d want the extra $3.25M in any given season. That’s a second line winger right there.
On the practical side, I think they also just hope he maybe stops sucking. If they paid $6.5M for him, they also probably would love to get $6.5M out of him.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
