Recent ESPN.com study finds 20% of HP Pavilion vendors are in violation of health code
A recent study completed by ESPN.com found that 20% of the food vendors operating in HP Pavillion comitted "critical heathcode violations" in 2009.
HP Pavilion at San Jose
San Jose Sharks
Vendors with critical violations: 20%Inspection report excerpt: At one location, inspectors found Chinese chicken salad had warmed to 60 degrees, about 20 degrees above a safe temperature.
Although 20% is lower than many of the other stadiums in the country, the fact remains that one fifth of all food vendors in HP Pavilion are putting their patrons at risk of serious health issues.
What makes matters worse? The realization that the food is charged at a premium of 20-30% over non-arena prices. I understand that the vendors are taking advantage of a captive consumer base. That's capitalism at it's finest, and 100% legal.
However, the truth of the matter is that this profit-gouging comes at the expense of our health as consumers. To justify the exorbitant prices of food, shouldn't they be responsible for making that food safe for consumption?
If you're going to charge me $25 for a hot dog, fries and a beer, I expect that meal to be clean, and the conditions in which it was made to be up to code.
Bottom line is that the vendors are too concerned with the bottom line. So just remember: Next time you're in line for $9.00 chicken tenders, the financial cost isn't the only thing you should be worried about.

Verizon Center where Capitals play is 100% and they found mice droppings in there.
But that’s good to know. Give me the reason to boycott their stands this season.

That was nasty >.>
But most of the reasons aren’t that big of a deal imo, but meh…considering the price, it is, as you said, unacceptable.
Go Sharks!
Any violation, in my opinion, is a big deal. The price exacerbates the problem.
The only reason these vendors are not up to code is because they will have customers, regardles. SVSE is turning a blind eye to the problem, because they should be attempting to protect the consumer and insure quality control.

By the way, I guarantee you that Eric and his Chicago Dog stand over in the 223/224 area didn’t violate any health codes. He runs a tight ship, that Eric.

It’s unfortunate that the Department of Environmental Health doesn’t specify the specific vendors in their report, but there were some hot dog violations found. No way of telling if that was Chicago Dog or not, though.

I simply have to question the temperature that the food is being served at sometimes. It get’s so busy at the ChiDog stand that the turn-over is more than the roller-cooker can accommodate. I have seen on a couple of occasions an official looking person checking the temperature of the dogs. They must’ve had some sort of issue in the past with undercooked dogs. ( that just sounds funny) Regardless, Chicago Dogs are a must eat whenever I do go to the Tank.

Well, also hotdogs. But hotdogs are already pretty filthy, so I’m not sure what the vendors could do to make them less safe.

As I mentioned in the OT thread
Most of the workers are voluntary. I dont expect them to be up to the health code, and take my chances accordingly.
My question is, Why are these people voluntary? Are they on work release programs?

Must be, but I don’t get how this works. Now the price gouging seems more severe, if they don’t even have to pay the employees.

HP Pavilion - WORST FOOD IN SPORTS
The food and food selection is awful at HP. I doubt there is a building in the 4 major pro sports with a worse selection and quality.
If the Sharks do another State of the Sharks, this will be the question I ask. We go to be entertained by the sport, but I can’t choke down another cold burrito.
Agreed, by and large, the food at HP Pavilion is utter tripe. Odd that SVSE does so many things right, yet would overlook this crucial aspect of the arena experience.

I agree with that. Even most college football arenas offer better selection of food.
I get reminded of that every time I go see a Giants game.

I don't know the level of training the concession staff at HP Pavilion receives
But at most stadiums, food workers are VOLUNTEERS who work for a percentage of sales to go to their charity or organization. eg.Boys and Girls Clubs at Candlestick and The Wor. Sharks booster club at the MCI Center. I can understand gross health violations by people untrained in food safety, but if food workers on the payroll are committing these violations, this can’t be ignored.

the point is volunteers are not always versed in food safety. Should they be? Yes.
Are you going to pay for it? I doubt it.
As someone who has done far too much volunteer food service, I can tell you for a fact that you show up, they give you gloves and get you working. They is little to no briefing on food safety. For those of us who know who to safely prepare and handle foods, we can teach those we’re with, but not everyone is in a team that has someone who knows what they’re doing.

Food prep 101
First thing you learn when you get hired/volunteer in a reputable food service provider: Cold food should be kept at or below 40 F, hot food should be kept at or above 140 F, and wash your damn hands all the time. Sad how many people know this and disregard, and sadder how many people don’t even know this to begin with. I worked in restaurants since I was about 10 (dad owned a few when I was younger) through grad school, and cleanliness and food safety are always stressed. It’s interesting to think that the people you trust with your health, and life in some cases, are paid close to minimum wage (or volunteers in this case). Striking.
Considering “critical” violations vary from state to state I don’t know how much folks should be concerned. Personally I’d like more info before I hit the panic button. What the violations were, and where. If it’s some stuff was too warm or something, that can be easily fixed and I’m not going to worry. Now if they have rats doing the food prep, I’ll have something to be concerned about.

And add this as another reason that my boys and I will continue getting our food before the game elsewheres before going to the Tank. Not only is the food highly over-priced, but it is just not that good.

hello
I’d like to introduce myself; I am an idiot.
Sometimes I want a healthy option and not nachos. I usually (now) eat before the game or sneak food in. I do it to save money. You do funny things when you’re out of work for a long time but still want to pay for hockey tix. (and now with a job, I still plan to sneak in food!)

I made it a practice to never go hungry to a game. During playoffs I even went to the same place every time. Now that I think except the Blackhawks games. Oups.
But food around the HP Pavilion is much better than inside – and much cheaper too. Now it turns out, it’s probably also safer.

Sorry but the Arena has pretty bland food. And all of it is WAAY overpriced. I just try to make sure that I have already eaten before going to a game.
That being said, I can always tell when I have had too much to drink when I’m like: “Fuggit, Ima pay a shit ton of money for the crappiest Nachos I have ever had!”
+1 for right on the money.

If the problem is primarily "temperature"
I wonder how much that has to do with equipment. Basically, are the display trays old and in need of repair?
Morti made the point that maybe it’s because folks are volunteers and have inadequate training.
I suppose the study doesn’t worry me because the findings don’t indicate that HYGIENE is a problem among vendors. THAT I’d worry about. But food that’s been left out too long? Yeah, it sucks, but it doesn’t immediately strike me as the kind of thing that’s going to kill me or make me sick (yes I know bad things grown when you don’t adequately cook or cool certain foods, but I’m guessing they’re not serving spoiled milk here).
The way the report is presented, I’m really just not sure what to make of it. 20% with critical violations? What’s a critical violation? And the summary only made the point of warm food. Again, we’re not finding instances of workers going to the bathroom and not washing hands or letting food hit the ground are we? And what’s the difference there as compared to any restaurant anywhere in California?
While the concept is troubling, I’m not going to go to the Tank in fear of food because of this report. It will be more because it’s expensive and not all that good. But sometimes, you just want a crappy hot dog or crappy nachos.
I would be very interested to hear what the Organization has to say about the report. I’m sure it’ll be company spin and whatnot, but hey, they could do a lot to assuage fan concerns.
Maybe if there’s another State of the Sharks, someone can ask this?
