This is almost as exciting as Kovalchuk never ending saga.

I hope they stretch it out for few more weeks just to mess with us.

I’m less worried about the possibility of a sign-and-trade if it is indeed a 2-year deal. Phew.

I’m betting this is the nail in the D-upgrade coffin.

They need to move NHL salary to bring in a defender and I don’t see that happening before Oct. 1st.

oh nice.

also, murray’s face (the wallpaper) is hilarious. For some reason I feel like that’s how he looks like all the time

Does this mean Seto will be an RFA with arbitration rights next season? Or will he be a UFA?

RFA

rfa, but he is allowed to go to arbitration…also kypreos is tweeting the deal is 1.8 mill which is amazing

by Vortexx on Jul 31, 2010 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, 1.8 is great news.

Sounds like a good compromise. If the Gooch bounces back with a 60+ point campaign, he gets a decent raise next year.

by ievans on Jul 31, 2010 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

I came here just to say that. It blew my expectations out of the water.

by Auth0r on Jul 31, 2010 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions

This is pretty huge

$1.8 would leave us with about $3.7 in cap room—enough to possibly bring in Willie Mitchell (if healthy) for maybe $2.5 AND a veteran to sort of replace Malhotra on the 3rd/4th line for around a million.

It also adds a lot of flexibility in terms of taking on salary in a trade—without giving up Clowe or Seto. Not sure what assets we have that teams might want, but hell, if Wisniewski is worth a 3rd round pick, maybe there is hope. Or maybe the Islanders will just trade him to us now for our 2nd round pick.

by Timorous Me on Jul 31, 2010 11:27 AM PDT reply actions

Glad to hear it. Very good cap hit. I’m counting on Seto to put the biscuit in the basket 35 times this year.

by In Bust we Trust on Jul 31, 2010 12:15 PM PDT reply actions

Great deal for both parties

Leaves room for a short term d upgrade with someone like Mitchell (or cap space for a trade), and we also will have long term room for Seto’s raise as Huskins and Wallin’s contracts come off the books.

by tarlinian on Jul 31, 2010 12:16 PM PDT reply actions

So this is our current lineup

FORWARDS
Patrick Marleau ($6.900m) / Joe Thornton ($7.200m) / Dany Heatley ($7.500m)
Ryane Clowe ($3.625m) / Joe Pavelski ($4.000m) / Devin Setoguchi ($1.800m)
Jamie McGinn ($0.996m) / Logan Couture ($1.241m) / Torrey Mitchell ($1.366m)
Frazer McLaren ($0.543m) / Scott Nichol ($0.760m) / Cameron MacIntyre ($0.600m)

DEFENSEMEN
Dan Boyle ($6.666m) / Douglas Murray ($2.500m)
Marc-Edouard Vlasic ($3.100m) / Niclas Wallin ($2.500m)
Kent Huskins ($1.700m) / Jason Demers ($0.543m)
Jay Leach ($0.500m)

GOALTENDERS
Antero Niittymaki ($2.000m) /Thomas Greiss ($0.550m)

CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $327,500

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $56,920,834; BONUSES: $715,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $2,479,166

We basically have enough room to sign Willie Mitchell to something around a $2.5M/yr contract. (Cap space of $2.479 M add Mitchell at $2.5, subtract Leach at $0.5M). It should leave us with more room than the Sharks had last year as well. It does however, result in a roster with one guaranteed healthy scratch dman a game, which is either a good or bad thing depending on how you want to look at the situation.

by tarlinian on Jul 31, 2010 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Where is my "Like" button for this?

Not that I was terribly worried about the signing, but it’s nice to see that both Seto and DW understand how important he is to the team at the same time keeping his cap hit low enough to make improving the team possible. I love hockey players.

by princessminako on Jul 31, 2010 1:02 PM PDT reply actions

He's only getting $100K more than Huskins?

And half of Clowe? I’m blown away that he agreed to that. He got the shaft.

Way to go DW, Seto & agent.

Now time to put that saved cash toward PK/D
And as far as signings go, I’d like to read about a Jumbo ext. in the near future

Ha ha, yeah, that was a spiteful placement of him, because of his contract, at No 7 instead of Demers.

We really should play Demers a lot during the regular season, though, even if we get another d-man.

by Timorous Me on Jul 31, 2010 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I forgot about Park

I was looking around for a player who can play bottom six and PK, but also step into the top 6 and be semi productive. Also this player has to have some sort of playoff experience. Park still has speed, and its been soo long since hes played in the playoffs. Other players I considered were Belanger, B. Morrison, Modano, and Madden. However these 4 will probably cost more than $1M. Whereas Park can be had for under a mil. I like your thinking and the lineup looks good, lets hope MacIntyre is what every GM hopes he is (3rd line grinder w/ scoring pop).

Niiiiiiiiiiice

1.8 mil is an awesome cap hit that should really help us out this year. I was kinda hoping we could parlay Setos poor season into a cheap 3 or 4 year contract that would pay dividends after a year or two, but it’s hard to be upset with a 1.8 million cap hit.

Who woulda thunk that Wallin’s salary would be 28% higher than Seto’s this year??

by Khaaz on Jul 31, 2010 3:47 PM PDT reply actions

Considering many of us thought

getting Seto for anything under 3.0M would itself be a steal…getting him for almost half of that is insane. WTG, DW!

I was expecting him to sign a 2-3 year deal worth 3+ per. 1.8 is AWESOME

Well gawlee..

If both sides are happy with the one year deal, and Gooch wants to remain in San Jose for future playoff runs, then he needs to set a new high watermark for himself. Let’s hope he continues to thrive and help San Jose achieve the ultimate trophy.

Seto needs to fire his agent

His cap hit is slightly more than Huskins.

That being said. WOW. WANT.

I wonder what’s going to happen next season when Seto’s due for a raise. Who’s contract comes off the book at that point? Huskins and Wallin?

Well, whatever. We’re worry about cap issues then.

It gives the team a lot more flexibility than there would have been had he signed to what most of us were previously banking on.
