Around SBN: Super Bowl XLVI: Eli Manning And The Meaning Of 'Elite'

According to Russian newspaper Sovetsky Sport, Evgeni Nabokov's agent Sergey Isakov confirmed that Nabby signed a 4-year contract to play in the KHL. Nabokov will join SKA St. Petersburg and become a teammmate of such former NHL notables as Alexei Yashin, Sergei Zubov, Alexander Korolyuk, Andrei Zyuzin, Darius Kasparaitis, Oleg Saprykin and Sergey Brylin.

The agent is quoted as saying that they've reached the agreement on the money a while ago, but had to sort out family questions. Nabokov and his family will move to Russia in August.

Nabokov and the KHL is holding a press conference announcing the signing tomorrow. We'll post an update on Fear the Fin with his reaction and thoughts on making this move.

Who knew that when we were watching Game 4 of the Western Conference finals between the Sharks and the Blackhawks, we were watching Nabby's last NHL game.

yeah

I’m kinda sad because it means I’ll probably never get to see him play again and let’s face it, he probably wanted to stay in the NHL, but at the same time it’s a relief knowing we’ll never have to play him. That would just be horrible.

Hot damn

Kinda thought it might come to this, but it’s still a weird turn in the whole saga. At least now we won’t be faced with rooting against him after all he’s done for the Sharks.

Godspeed, Nabby. Or, uh, whatever it is you Russians say that’s roughly equivalent.

To be honest, I was surprised that he decided to uproot his family and move, just to play a few more years. That is, until I saw the rumored amount – $6 million a year. That’s certainly a nice final payday, particularly considering it’s a 4-year contract and he’d have been stupid not to take it.

All the same, still sad to see him go, but also glad that we won’t have to worry about facing him.

I think you put too much into moving. As one who was moved around as a child, it’s not as drastic as you think. Sure I wasn’t moved from one country to another, but still it’s just part of life. You either learn to adapt or you become another “victim” not able to handle change. :)

Well obviously you have to adapt…doesn’t mean it wouldn’t totally suck. Also, moving from one part of the US to another isn’t nearly the same as moving from the US to Russia, they have a different culture and they all speak a different language. I really hope his wife and kids can speak Russian.

I'd bet that was part of the "non-salary" considerations.

Why would it totally suck? If they don’t speak Russian, they can learn. Rather than seeing the cons of moving a family to Russia, look at the pros. New opportunities, meet new people, experience a new culture. There is alot a family can get from going to another country.

I think most people are thinking it from the perspective of their own childhood

Had my Dad said we’re moving to Russia when i was a kid I would have been totally against it (ignoring the Cold War which was over by the time I reached adolescence).

However, I’m sure Nabby has instilled in his children a pride and interest in Russian culture. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see them move back once Nabby’s contract expires (San Jose goalie coach anyone?).

I’m sure this is a decision that was not made lightly and I’m sure all parties involved have their reservations, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were looking at this as some kind of new and exciting adventure.

exactly why I said what I said … I moved around alot when I was a kid, many children are moved around alot due to family situations – that doesn’t mean it sucks. Talk to army brats, there are some that will say it sucks, and others that will disagree. To assume how his kids will react based on your own reaction is silly.

If my parents said we’re moving to Russia when I was a kid, I would have been thrilled. But I happen to love change. You just can’t assume to know how his family is reacting. Or to think it would suck just cause it’s not America (which is what I’m gathering from some of the comments).

SAD day for the NHL - Go Nabby

The hockey media is ridiculous. Somehow the GMs are afraid of the hockey media. Nabby is bona-fide #1 goalie, top 5 goalie (in terms of consistency) in the NHL.

Apparently he’s not clutch… except his numbers improve slightly in the playoffs. He was the best player when the Sharks went to the WCF in 03-04 (amazing actually). He was outstanding in 07-08 when we lost to Dallas. He was the reason Russia won the IIHF World Cup a couple of years ago. To scapegoat him is totally ridiculous (even in the game against Canada, where I’m not sure Russia was even playing any defensemen).

It’s sad day for the NHL.

PS I don’t blame the Sharks for letting him go, they had to with cap restrictions it was either Nabby or Marleau and Marleau is younger and getting better still, but it’s ridiculous nobody else will sign him.

Blame the overreaction to Niemi and Leighton being in the Cup Finals. The media whirlwind about the “era of the big time goalie is dead” is killing good goaltenders’ chances of finding homes in the NHL. Maybe it’s the NHLs way to try and increase scoring again…

Keith, Seabrook, Pronger, Carle

Every team out there who decided to go younger/cheaper in goal had better ask themselves if they have anyone of that caliber playing in front of their net.

Also, they’ll have to figure out if they have defensive forwards like Bolland, Toews, et al.

The idiot yahoo commenter who said anyone could have played net behind the Shark’s defense was clearly referring to Chicago and Philly’s D.

That's actually why I respect Nabby so much

On a much better defensive team like Chicagoo or Philly, I’m sure Nabby would have won a Cup (maybe more). But putting up the numbers he did for the Sharks, considering that our defensive core has been weak for some time now, is amazing.

I don’t think Yahoo commentors understand the state of SJS’ defense. Or they overestimate our capabilities, which I don’t mind one bit. It’s just, in the end it makes Nabby the enemy… and that just doesn’t cut it.

I so REC'd that post, Zero.

It’s what I’ve been saying all along, though in a slightly different way.

Sav% and GAA are just as much a refection of D-men as they are a goalie. Someone else said: “anyone could look good behind that Chicago D,” and while I might not go that far, I would say that our former crease defender did a whole hell of a lot to make up for other areas.where we lacked (as Plank pointed out in the total shots vs save %). Many of these goalies look better than they are, because of strong D, and many others look far worse than they should because of the same. Makes me think that the stats mosts fans use to track performance are anything but a good measure of skill.

K. I’m done for now.
