Evgeni Nabokov to KHL is Confirmed
According to Russian newspaper Sovetsky Sport, Evgeni Nabokov's agent Sergey Isakov confirmed that Nabby signed a 4-year contract to play in the KHL. Nabokov will join SKA St. Petersburg and become a teammmate of such former NHL notables as Alexei Yashin, Sergei Zubov, Alexander Korolyuk, Andrei Zyuzin, Darius Kasparaitis, Oleg Saprykin and Sergey Brylin.
The agent is quoted as saying that they've reached the agreement on the money a while ago, but had to sort out family questions. Nabokov and his family will move to Russia in August.
Nabokov and the KHL is holding a press conference announcing the signing tomorrow. We'll post an update on Fear the Fin with his reaction and thoughts on making this move.
Who knew that when we were watching Game 4 of the Western Conference finals between the Sharks and the Blackhawks, we were watching Nabby's last NHL game.

WOOHOO!
WE WON’T HAVE TO PLAY AGAINST NABBY EVER! Thanks for the memories, and good luck Nabby :-D
Go Sharks!
yeah
I’m kinda sad because it means I’ll probably never get to see him play again and let’s face it, he probably wanted to stay in the NHL, but at the same time it’s a relief knowing we’ll never have to play him. That would just be horrible.
On one hand sad, but...he will always be a Shark now :-)
and as ivan said, it won’t be odd
Go Sharks!
100% agree.
Fear The Fin = Man goes into cage... Cage goes into salsa... Shark's in the salsa... Our shark.
Hot damn
Kinda thought it might come to this, but it’s still a weird turn in the whole saga. At least now we won’t be faced with rooting against him after all he’s done for the Sharks.
Godspeed, Nabby. Or, uh, whatever it is you Russians say that’s roughly equivalent.

I thought it was a six-year deal worth $24 million. He definitely could have made some money in the NHL. I’m still really surprised he’s gone.

Nevermind, it’s four years. The Flyers could have afforded him if Holmgren didn’t blow his money on more D and Jody Shelly.

KHL doesn’t release salary information. I doubt we’ll ever know for sure.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
That’s a real shame, although I’d hate to see him come back to town like Kipper did its a shame he couldn’t find a job in the NHL. I would have definitely watched him play where ever. I am curious at the $ amount.

Im torn on this. On one im selfishly happy because now hes always a Shark (NHL wise) but now Im selfishly sad because I dont get to see hhim again. Thinking rationally he deserved to have a shot with another NHL team and its a shame he didnt get it.

To be honest, I was surprised that he decided to uproot his family and move, just to play a few more years. That is, until I saw the rumored amount – $6 million a year. That’s certainly a nice final payday, particularly considering it’s a 4-year contract and he’d have been stupid not to take it.

I think you put too much into moving. As one who was moved around as a child, it’s not as drastic as you think. Sure I wasn’t moved from one country to another, but still it’s just part of life. You either learn to adapt or you become another “victim” not able to handle change. :)
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?
"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security" -- Benjamin Franklin
Well obviously you have to adapt…doesn’t mean it wouldn’t totally suck. Also, moving from one part of the US to another isn’t nearly the same as moving from the US to Russia, they have a different culture and they all speak a different language. I really hope his wife and kids can speak Russian.
I'd bet that was part of the "non-salary" considerations.
I’d bet he was looking to get the kids into one of the international schools to help them acclimate.
"Never start a fight, but ALWAYS finish it."
Bleeding teal since 1997
Why would it totally suck? If they don’t speak Russian, they can learn. Rather than seeing the cons of moving a family to Russia, look at the pros. New opportunities, meet new people, experience a new culture. There is alot a family can get from going to another country.
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?
"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security" -- Benjamin Franklin
I think most people are thinking it from the perspective of their own childhood
Had my Dad said we’re moving to Russia when i was a kid I would have been totally against it (ignoring the Cold War which was over by the time I reached adolescence).
However, I’m sure Nabby has instilled in his children a pride and interest in Russian culture. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see them move back once Nabby’s contract expires (San Jose goalie coach anyone?).
I’m sure this is a decision that was not made lightly and I’m sure all parties involved have their reservations, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were looking at this as some kind of new and exciting adventure.

exactly why I said what I said … I moved around alot when I was a kid, many children are moved around alot due to family situations – that doesn’t mean it sucks. Talk to army brats, there are some that will say it sucks, and others that will disagree. To assume how his kids will react based on your own reaction is silly.
If my parents said we’re moving to Russia when I was a kid, I would have been thrilled. But I happen to love change. You just can’t assume to know how his family is reacting. Or to think it would suck just cause it’s not America (which is what I’m gathering from some of the comments).

SAD day for the NHL - Go Nabby
The hockey media is ridiculous. Somehow the GMs are afraid of the hockey media. Nabby is bona-fide #1 goalie, top 5 goalie (in terms of consistency) in the NHL.
Apparently he’s not clutch… except his numbers improve slightly in the playoffs. He was the best player when the Sharks went to the WCF in 03-04 (amazing actually). He was outstanding in 07-08 when we lost to Dallas. He was the reason Russia won the IIHF World Cup a couple of years ago. To scapegoat him is totally ridiculous (even in the game against Canada, where I’m not sure Russia was even playing any defensemen).
It’s sad day for the NHL.
PS I don’t blame the Sharks for letting him go, they had to with cap restrictions it was either Nabby or Marleau and Marleau is younger and getting better still, but it’s ridiculous nobody else will sign him.
Go Nabby

…can’t find a home in the NHL.
Sad. Sad day for the NHL.

Blame the overreaction to Niemi and Leighton being in the Cup Finals. The media whirlwind about the “era of the big time goalie is dead” is killing good goaltenders’ chances of finding homes in the NHL. Maybe it’s the NHLs way to try and increase scoring again…

Keith, Seabrook, Pronger, Carle
Every team out there who decided to go younger/cheaper in goal had better ask themselves if they have anyone of that caliber playing in front of their net.
Also, they’ll have to figure out if they have defensive forwards like Bolland, Toews, et al.
The idiot yahoo commenter who said anyone could have played net behind the Shark’s defense was clearly referring to Chicago and Philly’s D.

Exactly!
That’s the point everyone is overlooking…and it will be to the detriment of many, many teams. The defense in front of the goalie means so much! But if you can’t get your hands on a Keith or a Pronger, then maybe you should be looking at spending more money in net. Gotta keep pucks out one way or the other.

That's actually why I respect Nabby so much
On a much better defensive team like Chicagoo or Philly, I’m sure Nabby would have won a Cup (maybe more). But putting up the numbers he did for the Sharks, considering that our defensive core has been weak for some time now, is amazing.
I don’t think Yahoo commentors understand the state of SJS’ defense. Or they overestimate our capabilities, which I don’t mind one bit. It’s just, in the end it makes Nabby the enemy… and that just doesn’t cut it.
How cool? Think Steve Nash...

I so REC'd that post, Zero.
It’s what I’ve been saying all along, though in a slightly different way.
Sav% and GAA are just as much a refection of D-men as they are a goalie. Someone else said: “anyone could look good behind that Chicago D,” and while I might not go that far, I would say that our former crease defender did a whole hell of a lot to make up for other areas.where we lacked (as Plank pointed out in the total shots vs save %). Many of these goalies look better than they are, because of strong D, and many others look far worse than they should because of the same. Makes me think that the stats mosts fans use to track performance are anything but a good measure of skill.
K. I’m done for now.

I actually wanted to start a thread on just this topic
I.e. Do we really need more scores in games?
I mean basketball is rediculous, and marginalizing netminder skill doesn’t really seem all that exciting to me.

Nabby…good luck in Russia.
High sticking, tripping, slashing, spearing, charging, hooking, fighting, unsportsmanlike conduct, interference, roughing… everything else is just figure skating.

Why am I pissed
that there is NOTHING about this on the Sharks website? They put something up when Manny signed with the Canucks but nothing about Nabby going to the KHL?
Bitter.
And what’s the advice (Murray’s grandfather, Lars [Lasse] Bjorn) gives him?
"Hit more people."
It is on NHL.com, though
"...Take a deep breath sometimes... a break...and play some...hockey."
"...Hockey is a great way to take a pause from...day-to-day hard work..." -- Lt Gen. D.H. Huntoon Jr.
"TIC" means "Tongue-In-Cheek", when I use it in comments, in case one doesn't know. ;-)
different situations – SJ Sharks already announced that they would not be renewing Nabby’s contract. So there was no more relationship.
With Manny there was still the relationship when he was offered something from Van. Sharks had not already said good bye to him at that point.

I can see why they wouldnt have any news on the website
but it still would be good to see a small salute to the one that saved our asses for so many years. :/

it will be sad to see someone else in the sharks net
but it will be good to not play against him at the tank
I wanted nabby to be back in the NHL
and i wanted to be at the Tank in his first game back to listen to the crowd give him the biggest ovation in all of….anything.

So long and good luck, Nabby
Your pluck and happy dances will be missed.
Aside: how hard is it for a (non-Russian speaking) foreigner to attend a KHL game? I’ve always wanted to visit Russia..getting to watch Nabby play would be icing on the cake.

road trip
I think Ivano should organize a hockey road trip, stops in St Petersburg and Moscow, museums and hockey. A rooting section to go see his favorite team???
Now wouldn't that just be awesome to have a sea of teal behind him?
(Well, OK, a small lake, maybe).
