San Jose signs Niklas Hjalmarsson to a four year, $14MM offer sheet
According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, San Jose has signed RFA Niklas Hjalmarsson to a four year, $14MM offer sheet.
Chicago has seven days to match the offer. If they do not, San Jose will owe Chicago a 1st and a 3rd round pick as compensation.

I’m sure Chicago will match the offer to keep him, but I have to say, this was unexpected.

But can they match it? If they do then they need to purge more salary. I think they take the 1st and 3rd and go home.
Good... bad... I'm the guy with the gun.
Screw the Wings.
Yeah they can be over the cap by matching the offer sheet and then shed salary later. I hope though that we get to keep him this would be a huge steal for us.

Bingo
The Hawks have until September to be under their (lowered-by-performance bonuses) cap. Matching the San Jose offer right now isn’t a problem.

The Hawks must be pissed, although they did it to themselves

but they did it and won a Cup
maybe that was their intention all along? Who knows. If we can reap the benefits of that error why the heck not. Go D!

Getting under would be extremely difficult for them, but you’re right in saying that they have a lot to play with still. Whether or not they want to go that route or let him walk for picks is questionable, but with a player like Hjalmarsson, I tend to agree— it would be hard to let him walk.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
I know teams have until September to get under the cap, and they’re allowed to sit over it by a certain amount in the offseason while they’re wheeling and dealing. But, to match an offer sheet, does a team have to be under the cap already and make them fit? Are teams allowed to go over while matching an offer sheet in the offseason?

TEams are allowed a cushion, and I believe it’s around roughly $64.0MM but would have to check my facts.
Either way, Chicago doesn’t want to let him walk. Can they afford to keep him? Who knows at this point, all a game of wait and see. I assume that Dale Tallon will be getting a lot of calls in Florida during the next week (as if he hasn’t gotten a lot already from the Hawks in the last three weeks LOL).

Also, keep in mind Chicago’s cap hit for performance bonuses— pretty sure it was about $4.0MM, but again, would have to double check.
Trying to throw a post together with TCY right now that will have all the relevant details.

Would you rather have the Hammer or Marc Staal?
Good... bad... I'm the guy with the gun.
Screw the Wings.
I'll answer that question with a question:
Which one hurts the hawks more?
…
But no, seriously, someone who actually knows anything about Staal, answer?
Staal, but that’s not an equal comparison really, Staal would require a lot more to sign. He would require a higher cap hit, and some serious picks if we went the offersheet route (although i have a feeling Sather would match nearly any offer); i don’t know if he’s really available for trade but he would cost some very valuable assets.
Hjalmarsson is cheaper, much easier to get, and still very very solid.
Is there a name that’s harder to spell then that?

I’ll actually be a little surprised if Chicago matches it – they still have major cap problems, even with the salary dumps they’ve already pulled off. Still, you never know.
I think I’ll just stick with The Hammer rather than attempt to learn how to pronounce his name. I’ll be happy if he ends up here.

If neither is an option they’ll go back to the Sharks and play let’s make a deal.

Interesting move. No idea if he’s worth the 1st round pick and the salary that will be second highest on defense. We’ll see I guess.
But is this is the game DW decided to play, why not throw an offer sheet at Niemi? He didn’t want to wait being afraid that Nitty will be gone by then?

Wait a minute
what does this mean for signing Setoguchi? If the Hawks don’t match, the Sharks have about $2.6 million left in cap space with Seto still unsigned. Somebody has to go if the Sharks want to sign Seto at the price we expect him to be signed for.

My thoughts
Murray’s ticket is easily punched out of town now, even if it wasn’t before with the Wallin signing. Really just no room for a player of his caliber if San Jose has Hjalmarsson next week.

Because DW loves Huskins Time
and Murray would probably gain more interest in Huskins.
Everyone is so down on Huskins all the time and they’re like “Trade him! Trade him!”, but if he’s so bad that we don’t want him on the team, who will want him?
(for the record, I’m officially over my hate-on-Huskins phase, he may not be the best D-man, but he’s earned my begrudging respect)

I feel the same about Huskins.
I’d just rather keep Murray.
I think Huskins earned his $1.7 million last year, it just doesn’t necessarily fit on this team.

the biggest disappointment was Huskins. 12min TOI and a -5. That’s ludicrous, at that rate you might as well play a rookie because his match-ups were that weak….Wallin is in the same camp as Huskins as far as playoff hockey goes, secret weapon notwithstanding. They play worse than other last pairings. At least Murray is moderate as far as playoffs go, at least near to holding his own.

Right— DW signed Wallin so he has another trade chip to play with in Murray (as oppossed to just having Clowe).
Not sure what kind of value Huskins has around the league. One year remaining is a plus, and the fact that there are some salary floor teams.
DW loves his puck movers. Hjalmarsson isn’t that. Only one he has is Boyle and Demers now. He’ll trade Murray and something else for that guaranteed, I think.

Wallin, Murray, Hjalmarsson, Leach, Vlasic. All defensive first guys.
Maybe you can get Vlasic to open up his game with a steady defensive guy like Hjalmarsson, but Pickles is never going to be the puck moving mold that Wilson is infatuated with.

DW
doesn’t care about revenge. The guy played without a helmet, he ain’t scared of another GM doing anything. This move is shrewd, and improves the hell out of the defense. I love it.
And it is also smart because they know, because they run a team too, and can figure these things out…that this is an either or for the Hawks in regards to Seabrook.
If they match on Hjalmmerstrom (SP?) , they pretty well can’t sign Seabrook for next year.
Hawks wil have the $4mil extra to play with next year (the money that came off their cap this upcoming season). If there the salary cap increases, they’ll have that to play with as well.
Seabs currently makes $3.5mil. I’m guessing his contract structure will be like Hossa’s and the team will be able to pay him around $5-5.5 mil per year. Should be doable, no?

Think of it this way— when is the next time Chicago and San Jose would be making a trade? It’s like offer sheeting someone from Detroit— who gives a shit, niether of these teams will be trading in the near future.
If you’re talking about Poppa Bowman’s pull throughout the NHL that’s a marginal point, but I think the upside greatly exceeds the downside.

Or can Chicago come out today and say they matched the offer sheet?
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
Precisely what I told TCY. There’s no way he makes another deal with this still up in the air, as Chicago matching the offer could turn things sour rather quickly.
My guess is that then Chicago will take their sweet time responding.

I’d bet money he’s paired with Boyle.

then whoever is left on the 3rd pair.

An “offer sheet” differs from a standard contract only in that it can be matched by the team holding RFA rights. This is his contract going into next year. The only question that remains is who is going to pay this salary, Chicago or San Jose.

Not really
If the era of the big money goaltender is over, why would you pay Niemi big bucks? In reading any of SCH’s pieces, they know that Duncan Keith is their MVP. Those guys know a thing or two about defense. As much as I like the move, I don’t see Chicago letting Hammer walk.

why would we boo him because Shark fans like to boo a player they rented for a few months?
Not in a million years
and probably longer since he helped win us the Cup. He’s seems to be a great kid on and off the ice. Any team would be lucky to have him.
Plus, we don’t understand the booing of a rental UFA player like Campbell (no matter how many times you try to explain it).

Chicago trouble
Let me get this right… Since Niemi filed for arbitration, no matter what, he will be a Hawk next year. Either he re-signs with the Hawks or the judge sets his salary (but he remains a Hawk). The Hawks cannot decide between Niemi and Hammer, they have to chose Niemi. It seems as if the cards are in Wilson’s hands here.
Goc went to arbitration didn’t he? And then never signed here.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
I don't think that's right
If they can’t agree on a number, Niemi becomes a UFA. I think…
Someone who knows the CBA should answer this question…

What will be the worst kind of an outcome is the Hawks deciding they want to stick with Hammer, let Niemi walk, and sign Turco.
Fear the Fin - all Evgeni, all the time.
And yet
It’s not worse than if we’d done nothing. There’s only upside in this move, other than pissing off the hawks.
They’d still have to move salary to sign Hammer’s offersheet and then come to an agreement with Turco. Not that the Sharks will be in on any salary moving trades with Chicago now, but it’s not like they’d trade in the West anyways. They’re still in trouble either way…this just forces their hand a bit.

Ballsy move from Wilson here, but this is a little excessive for a 4D. He’s making what Ryan Suter is for the next two years, and they’re on different planets.

Hjalmarsson is a great young player, in a year or two i think his contract will be a steal. He’s definitely got potential to be a top 2 guy imo.
Certainly entitled to your own opinion, but I don’t see it. Even here, he’ll play 3D to Vlasic and Boyle. 3.5m for a 3D is still pricey, IMO.

I don’t know. 3.5 for a top 4 guy is fairly common through the NHL. He could be as good as twilight Blake, certainly better than anything we have now.
Nashville is a bad comparison for salary in the same way that Soupy is a bad comparison for salary. Nashville either underpays their players or lets them walk.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
Exactly
what I was thinking. 3.5 is right in the ballpark for a top 4 on a GOOD team…

Good call. With the current state of the Sharks D I think paying a little extra to poach the Hammer is justified anyway.

by sharks in oc on Jul 9, 2010 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions
With us
He’s probably a 2D. Vlasic and Boyle will never be on the same pairing. Boyle is our best offensive defenseman, but Vlasic is our shutdown man. He needs a stay at home partner. In theory, Hammer could be that guy, which makes him a 2D for us. And 3.5 for 4 PRIME years is about what you pay these days I think.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
I don’t think 3.5 mil is that pricey for a very solid 3rd defenseman. I mean Brian Campbell is 7.1 million as a 3rd defenseman lool.
If you’re comparing someone’s salary to Soupy; you’ve got problems. ;)

Although DW today referred to Hjalmarsson as the 3rd defenseman for the Hawks—a subtle little shot at Campbell?
That’s what i thought at first, but i think he was rating them by their ice times, and Hjalmarsson is actually number 3rd in time on ice per game for the Hawks.
OMG THIS IS AWESOME NEWS
No wayyy Chicago can match that. They’d be shooting themselves in the foot if they did.
Holy crap last night while i was laying in bed (lol) and i seriously said to myself, “holy crap, i forgot about Hjalmarsson. He’s still unsigned! If there was ever a time for DW to offersheet a player it’s RIGHT NOW with Hjalmarsson. Chicago can’t afford to match a 3+ million dollar offer; but I dunno if DW is willing to make use of offersheets…sigh.”
I think they match it, it’s just going to be fun watching them get screwed even more.
