The Weekend of Kaberle Thread

Well, I figured that with the current understanding in the rumor mill being that the Sharks are in fact one of the teams with a serious interest in trading for Tomas Kaberle, I would begin a weekend of contemplation for us here at Fear The Fin in this very thread.

1. Do you think the Sharks are actually in on this weekends Kaberle festivities?

2. Who would you like to go to Toronto if a trade did in fact occur?

3. Do you think Doug Wilson can pull off another "upset" trade? (Something in the way of Kent Huskins going to Toronto)

4. We all know by now that the player that Toronto would probably be looking to get in exchange for Kaberle would be Ryane Clowe. Personal biases aside, do you think Kaberle is worth one of our top 6 in Ryan Clowe?

5. Who do you think could fill the roll of Ryane Clowe if he were to leave? (We don't have too many big forwards with the scoring ability of Clowe in our minor league system)

6. Am I way ahead of myself with the questions in this thread?

7. Anyone still here?

If not any of these questions, what are your personal takes on anything and everything involving what COULD go down this weekend?

Could be maybe

A curious question. I guess we’ll find out by the end of Sunday. It’s almost a guarantee that some Sharks fans would be upset at who goes, if indeed DW is in on the trying for Kaberle.

If he does trade for him, it won’t be a steal for the Sharks. Burkie has been making this deal in public for 2 years. He was at at -16, and for a supposedly great PP guy, only scored 2 goals on the 30th overall PP.

He wouldn’t be able to sell Huskins to his city like he could for Clowe ( which, if he is the one, it should be straight up and not a pick…or at least not a pick over 4th.

If the trade is Clowe for Kabs

I think the sharks should get a pick or prospect coming back their way, considering leafs would get three years of Clowe and Sharks only get one year of Kaberle.
Of course, if the Sharks can get an extension worked out for Kabs before the trade actually goes down, then no other assets would be needed. Perhaps the leafs could throw in a 3rd or 4th round in the case that Kaberle bolts after a single season with the Sharks.

He isn’t ‘supposedly’ a great PP guy, he really is a great PP guy. His job isn’t to score goals, it is to set up his teammates and move the puck from point A to point B. Unfortunetly for him his teammates don’t have a clue how to score, yet he still managed to put up 49 points. If he was on a team that actually knew how to put the puck in the net from time to time I see no reason he couldn’t get 60 points.

my

general opinion on the matter is that Burke is looking for a little too much in return for Kaberle. Especially considering that Kaberle does not want to be traded and could become a malcontent wherever he ends up. Not to mention it is only 1 year guarunteed from Kaberle, who will almost definitely bolt in free agency for the city that pleases him. Or he could just re-sign in Toronto for a major discount so that Burke will take him back lol.

Dude, lemme getchur keys.

Huskins and Clowe for Kabs and a late pick/prospect might not be that far fetched

Huskins did play in Anaheim, so Burky does know him pretty well.

Although that knowledge of the Huskinator could be to our disadvantage!

Kaberle to a pizza parlor
Kovalchuk to the local jam factory
Willie Mitchell to the Sharks
Okay, I know that wasn’t funny, but still..
Kaberle to SJ COULD happen. Kaberle for Clowe and Huskins/a prospect?
I hope someone takes Huskins..
But if not, Clowe+ Torrey Mitchell?

Burke has an irrational love for guys like Clowe, I don’t think there is any need for Wilson to throw in a prospect. Also, the Leafs already have too many defensemen so I can’t imagine them having any interest in Huskins.

Not that I will believe any of the rumors that don’t come from …. well, no one. I even got burned in the false Marleau trade last year. Whatever.

The rumor is that the Kings want Willie Mitchell badly. I think they actually need someone like Kaberle more. I really don’t think Willie Mitchell will sign until next week because of Kaberle. I also think Burke has a deal lined up with someone, but is waiting until the last possible moment (and why wouldn’t he?) to see if someone makes a crazy overpayment kind of pitch for Kaberle.

I know we have an offer in on Kaberle, but I hope we don’t get him. I think we could use him, but I’d rather have Willie Mitchell. Having Doug Wilson as our GM has to help, too. If I was Willie Mitchell and was looking for a new team to show what I can do, I’m going to look at the past few offseasons of the Caps and the Sharks. Both teams have made big moves in that time, but the Caps, in my opinion, have been over the top in moving everyone around in an attempt to build a juggernaut. They made big moves in the middle of the season, or at least the deadline that jettisoned good players for shots at other good players. When I analyze the Sharks’ moves of the past few years, it’s been to bring in more talent, but really without changing anyone from the core group. It also can’t hurt that the collapse of the Caps in 2010 was more pronounced and recent than the 2009 playoffsofwhichnooneshallspeak.

If my memory serves, Big Willie narrowed down his possible spots as San Jose, Washington DC, Vancouver, and Detroit. He clearly wants to play for a winner. Detroit doesn’t have the resources left to sign anyone. Vancouver is still an option, but not for someone who wants to play 1st pairing minutes. If Mitchell signs in Vancouver, then maybe they’ll salary dump someone back to us.

1. I think DW tries to get in on every deal looking for good opportunities

2. Who would i like to go in the trade? Huskins? lol

3. Yeah DW could pull of an upset imo, but it wouldn’t happen this weekend. I think Burke is heavily exaggerating the offers he’s getting for Kaberle and I think DW will call his bluff and could eventually pull of an ‘upset’ trade. Burke says that if the right deal doesn’t come along then he’ll hang onto Kaberle but i think he’s bluffing that too.

4. I think Clowe is much more valuable of an asset than Kaberle is, but to the Sharks it’s a fairly even trade since we can easily replace Clowe with Couture and we really need to improve our defense and relieve Boyle of some minutes.

5. Logan Couture wouldn’t fill a power forward role but then again Clowe didn’t really play like a true power forward a lot of the time. I think scoring-wise Couture would easily replace Clowe on the 2nd line.

6. I doubt Kaberle will get traded this weekend unless some GM makes a dumb trade where they get ripped off.

7. Yes, i’m here waiting to see a fanshot telling me that we signed Willie Mitchell for 2 million (or less!) + bonuses.

Rumors from the Toronto Sun

via Bruce Garrioch (one of the dregs of mainstream rumor-mongering, in my opinion):

The San Jose Sharks are looking for help. But Kaberle, 32, who carries a $4.25-million hit, wants to stay in the East. That hasn’t stopped talk of Sharks GM Doug Wilson offering prospect D Derek Joslin and a first-round pick. Bieksa and his $3.75-million hit might make more sense. Not sure what to make of whispers that San Jose is willing to trade LW Jamie McGinn or C Logan Couture for Bieksa, but the talk is out there.

I don’t believe for a second that DW is considering Couture in any deal for Bieksa or Kaberle. McGinn? Sure. But I think right now he’s going to stick to his guns with the “low-ball” offer of Joslin and a 1st. For one year of Kaberle—I don’t expect more than that—that’s about fair.

by Timorous Me on Aug 14, 2010 7:52 PM PDT reply actions

If DW was willing to trade Couture, I think he would have gotten Halak earlier in the offseason.

I would be ecstatic if we were to get Kabs for Joslin and a 1st.

Not a fan of trading McGinn or Couture. We need them badly for depth because of how cheap their deals are.

My personal feelings

I prefer Willie Mitchell to Tomas Kaberle for a variety of factors. Not saying I don’t like Kaberle, just feel Mitchell is more suited to our needs, and doesn’t require the same kind of sacrifice from us. Unless Mitchell signs elsewhere prior to the expiration of Kaberle’s trade window, I want no part of us making a move for him.

kaberle over mitchell

sharks need more scoring and point production from the blue line… Kaberle can put up 50-60+ points a season…. Mitchell cannot…
With vlasic murray huskins and wallin as as our defensive defencemen, i dont see a spot for mitchell UNLESS we see one of those guys moved.. maybe in a deal for Kaberle? Itd be really sweet to see Boyle partnered with Mitchell and Kaberle with Vlasic…. but prob just a dream…

I would argue that since we have Nitty/Greiss now, we need defense more than offense.

But I guess it would depend on what we had to give up for Kaberle. If it is just Joslin and a 1st instead of Clowe, I’d rather us take Tomas and see if a defensive defenseman is available at the deadline.

If Kaberle can be had for Joslin and a first then get him.

Salary Cap

SJ is up against the cap wall. If Kaberle did go to SJ it would almost have to be for Clowe because hes the only person salary cap wise who would fit.

He raged at the world, at his family, at his life. But mostly he just raged.

by Icion on Aug 15, 2010 2:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Not that close to the cap.

We have over $3 million in space right now thanks to Setoguchi being on a cheap, 1-year deal. If you get rid of Huskins hit, and add Kaberle, we’d still have $587K left over for a healthy scratch forward.

If we want W Mitchell AND Kaberle, we’d have to ditch Huskins and Murray.

But I’d say that makes us decently flexible.

Yeah Kaberle could potentially put up 50 – 60 points, but we’d have to lose a 60+ point scorer in Ryan Clowe to get him (at the very least). So it’d be dumb to choose Kaberle over Mitchell imo, not that we need to make that decision since Mitchell is a UFA and trading Clowe for Kaberle would basically free up the cap space needed to get Kaberle.

I’m not suggesting he CAN’T be a 60+ point scorer, I just think it’s premature to value him that way considering it’s a mark he has yet to hit in his career. Until he puts up 60+ points a couple times I wouldn’t label him as that just yet.

Well, neither has Pavelski.

and yet, I don’t think its a stretch to value him as a 60 or even 70 point player.

Now, Clowe is no Pavs, but considering the pace he’s put up the last couple years and the fact Clowe’s in his prime, I don’t think calling him a 60 point player is outlandish.

by sum1no1 on Aug 15, 2010 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions

This year he got 57 points, last year he got 52 points in 71 games. It’s definitely much fairer to say he’s a 60 point scorer than it is to say he’s a 50 point scorer. Considering the extremely slow start Clowe had this season, i wouldn’t be surprise if he got 70+ points next season assuming he can get going a lot quicker this season.

by Khaaz on Aug 16, 2010 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

This side debate is moot, really. But I will conclude by saying it depends who you’re asking. A seller (DW) might pitch him as a 60-point scorer when a buyer might not see him that way. Upward trends and statistical proration don’t mean much, to me anyways. They can help make predictions, but they’re not definite qualifiers. I guess that’s the whole point in taking risks though.

Keep in mind that on the Sharks he MAY be a “60-point scorer” but for the sake of this discussion (Kaberle trade) I can’t see him getting 60 points, which would be a career high, as a Leaf.

www.twitter.com/thestevedave

by SteveDave on Aug 16, 2010 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Keep in mind, my statement of Clowe being a 60-point scorer on the Sharks was in response to a statement by sum1no1 that Kaberle could be a 60 point scorer with the Sharks. Obviously both of us are making assumptions here but sum1no1 was trying to say that by trading for Kaberle we’d increase our scoring since he could put up 60 points for us. When really we’d be losing Clowe, a player who could also net 60+ points for us next season so it’s not like we’re gaining much scoring really.

It’s over now though, and i’m glad we didn’t trade Clowe+ for him. As long as we sign willie mitchell i’ll be happy.

Clowe could potentially have ended up on the top line in Toronto, they don’t really have much that is better aside from Kessel.

Top line minutes would and potentially playing from behind a lot could inflate his numbers over 60 points in Toronto easily.

Playing on the top line would also imply playing against teams’ top D units and I wouldn’t consider Versteeg and Kessel (or whoever his linemates would be) creative enough to be able to work around that.

Anyways, this is all just conjecture. I would love nothing more than for Clowe to get 60, 70 or 80+ points this season so I could call him that!

DNW for Clowe.

I’d rather sign Mitchell now and wait until the trade deadline to pick up another offensive D component. At that point we will know more about what we need, who will fill the shoes of the player traded, etc.

We just traded who for who?!

by BawLa on Aug 15, 2010 8:54 AM PDT reply actions

I personally think we should get Kabs depending on the value.

1) Kaberle for Joslin + 1st is a steal…if you dump Picks, Prospects, Huskins, Mitchell, and Murray…you free up enough space for Willie and another bottom six forward while keeping your top 6 in tact.
2) As you folks correctly mentioned, Kabs would be an ideal mentor for Demers and even if he does leave after this season (though we could request a 3rd if he does from Toronto), Demers will be better

So if DW gets the right deal, I say go for it!

GO SHARKS!

Go Sharks!

by Dmitriy on Aug 15, 2010 11:53 AM PDT reply actions

Bottom line for me is that this roster would be better with Kaberle than without.

I agree with the concerns about value and our greatest needs… But Demers isn’t anywhere near the skill level Kaberle is.

The idea of having either Boyle or Kaberle on the ice pretty much all the time is very tempting. What an offensive juggernaut we would be, especially if we were to keep out top six in tact and keep Couture.

by skilletboy on Aug 15, 2010 1:21 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Also…

The market might dictate DW’s options. Sometimes you have to simply go with the best players available. Ideally getting Kaberle and a guy like Mitchell would be great.

by skilletboy on Aug 15, 2010 1:24 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I do think the Sharks are in on Kaberle, but I don’t want to see this happen unless we already have a legit shutdown dman under contract (Help us, Willie Mitchell. You’re our only hope!). I definitely don’t want to see it happening if it means giving up young forward talent (i.e. Couture). I wouldn’t mind if it was Joslin going the other way, but I’d hate to lose a first as well (as is the rumor).

But, like I said, I don’t want to see any trade for Kaberle unless we get a shutdown D shortly afterwards. And I definitely don’t want to overpay for one year of the guy, since he reportedly doesn’t like the Western Conference and would probably bolt after his contract is up. So, basically, I don’t want to give up Clowe.

Basically, if we get Kaberle, I want to only give up Joslin and Huskins and sign Willie Mitchell as well. So, I don’t really want it to happen.

Honestly, I had expected the trade to have happened by now. The lack of the announcement (hell, it’s the only “big” thing happening in the NHL right now) means that it obviously hasn’t happened yet… but that’s rather surprising.

I’m assuming that Burke is asking for WAY too much, despite the fact that he’s been trying to ship out Kaberle seemingly even when he was in Anaheim. Obviously, DW isn’t on that “fleeced” side of the trades he pulls off… he’s more of the “fleecing” kind of guy (that made no sense what-so-ever!)

I'm pretty pro-Kaberle

Most of it comes down to playing time. Dan Boyle was fourth in the league last season with 26:12 avg TOI. Kaberle, meanwhile, averaged 22:21 TOI per game. Meaning he’s used to playing some real minutes. Boyle, on the other hand, at times, was playing around (or even over) 30 minutes per night in crunch time. That’s just too much. He’s going to wear down. And, to me, he looked a little worn down late in the playoffs. That’s to be expected with that my time on ice.

Kaberle is a puck mover…which we could use, but don’t need. However, he’s an elite puck mover…meaning in crunch time, late in games, we wouldn’t have to run Boyle out there for 2-3 minutes at a time. We could still run Boyle regular shifts, and have Kaberle go regular shifts. A lot is being made of his +/-, and that is concerning…but he’d also be paired, ideally, with Vlasic, who would be beast covering his back when Kabs jumped up in the play. I really don’t think it’d be an issue. We wouldn’t be looking for him to kill penalties. And, yes, we’d still need a shutdown guy. But I don’t think we have to choose. If we have a chance to get a player of the caliber of Kaberle, who would make our team better (which I fully believe he would), then we shouldn’t hesitate to get him.

However, I wouldn’t give up Couture…and I’d have a clause in the trade that if he bolts at the end of the year, Toronto gives us a 3rd or 4th or something like that. I’d be ok giving up Clowe, assuming that’s all we give up.

Ultimately, I like Kaberle because I like the idea of being able to cut Boyle’s minutes so he’s more fresh down the stretch and late in games. And I don’t think Demers is anywhere near ready to step into that kind of role with the team.

yeah i agree. i think it would’ve happened by now

by FinAdic on Aug 15, 2010 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, yeah, that...

But I’ve felt that way all along. Burke is asking for too much for a one year rental. Kabs doesn’t want to play anywhere but Canada, so the US teams who would want him won’t want to give up a lot to get him, and Burke is trying to get a superstar’s return for him. Burke took a hard line, and no one’s going to meet it for a one year rental.

My simple answer to that was "No you!"

But…I’m disappointed because now our Defense still sucks :-/

I’m not willing to say our defense sucks until we see our defense sucking. Last season is an indication, but doesn’t tell the full story of how next season will go. Season hasn’t started yet, so defense doesn’t suck. :)

Ok stick with me for a minute here but....

Was this all a bluff by Burke heading into next season so that Kaberle will take a massive discount to stay in Toronto like everyone knows he wants to?

Secondly If Burke really wanted Kaberle gone he would have dumped him by last night regardless of whether it was exactly what he was looking for or not. Now if Burke doesn’t re-sign Kaberle he has nothing to show for it, but 2 years of ridiculous trade rumors. It will be the same old story this year at the trade deadline too, it will be speculated endlessly until nothing happens once again and Kaberle is left either finally walking away or taking a sizable hometown discount to continue playing in a town that no one wants him in anymore. IMO if Kabs really cared about money that much he would have allowed himself to be traded at the deadline last year and re-signed a huge contract with another team.

Just my off season conspiracy theory for the week.

NEXT WEEKS THEORY: Jamal Mayers hasn’t really been trying for his entire career, and now that he is on his favorite team, emerges as next years Rocket Richard trophy winner with a hefty 60 goals to lead the Sharks to their first Stanley Cup Finals win.

Dude, lemme getchur keys.

Why would Kaberle ever take a massive discount to stay in Toronto after this? It’s just proven that lots of teams want him, and the Leafs aren’t really one of them. Sure they kept him because they didn’t get the right deal, but he’s been trying to pawn him off for 2 years now. Why sign a contract with the Leafs if this is just going to happen every single year? Kaberle is done as a leaf after this year.

Kaberle

has an unhealthy obsession with Toronto. He’s nixed trades left and right over the years to stay. If he really wanted out, he’s had plenty and I mean PLENTY of opportunities to go.

Those were in the years before Burke, and the circus that has followed him since. I only know of him nixing 1 deal, but I haven’t followed the Leafs closely until recently…

I really don’t get why they tried to trade him in the first place.

this is why I say he would sign for a big discount

Like you said he has been pushed into being traded for two years and he still wanted to stay…why would that change now.
