First look at Konrad Abeltshauser this season
I just got home from Intra-squad game #3 at the Halifax Mooseheads training camp where I got to take a look at Konrad Abeltshauser for the first time this season.
I uploaded a couple videos, forgive the quality. They were recorded on my Blackberry with a low battery but they give an idea of what type of player Konrad is. He is the monster #8 in green, can't really miss him.
Video 1: A few nice breakout passes (creates quality scoring chance at end)
Video 2: Short rush up ice and back-check
Konrad has beefed up this season (up to 212 lbs from 198) which is great news because he needed to fill in his big frame (6'5") and I suspect he will continue to do so.
Konrad has some weaknesses when it comes to reading plays in the neutral zone and can sometimes be overly aggressive in the play, which is dangerous because he doesn't have the most effective pivots or acceleration, but he is great with the puck in all zones. He reads breakout plays well, makes great breakout passes and is opportunistic in the offensive zone. He had a few very good pinches in from the point which were stopped but the law of averages suggests those will work for him over the course of the season.
Towards the end of the game with his team down 4-3, he chased a puck into the offensive zone and as the goalie came out to play it, he was clipped in the mouth with the goalie's stick. It didn't look too serious but he did leave the ice. Hopefully he is okay.
Mooseheads pre-season in Halifax begins on Sunday against the Saint John Sea Dogs which should be an awesome way to kick start the year as SJ will be one of the top teams in the Q this season and may represent the league in the Memorial Cup.
I don't plan on littering FTF with Abeltshauser updates every game but I will be tweeting about him throughout the season. If you'd like to stay informed on Abeltshauser and his progress, follow me @thestevedave.
I am also working on getting an interview with him in the near future, so stay tuned for that.

Great stuff! Abeltshauser looks awesome in those videos. He seems pretty smooth on his skates for a guy his size, and he looks real confident with the puck.
Thanks a lot for the update and the vids.
Thanks!
I’m just glad to have a piece of the Sharks I can watch here so I’m more than happy to share the info.
