Heat WAVE OT Thread
WHY IS IT SO HOT!? I'm ready for some hockey, just so I can sit near the ice.
The informal skates with the players at Sharks Ice are starting to look more and more like an assembly of NHLers as additional Sharks have made their way to the Bay Area.
For a couple of participants, it made for an introductory session as both Antero Niittymaki and Jamal Mayers have found their way to San Jose. Counting the two newbies, there are more than Sharks 10 regulars already in town.

Come North, behind the Redwood Curtain
We’re finally having a couple of days of Summer, about 70F-75F at the most.

It was over 100 yesterday in Sacramento
I’ve been terrible this year viewing movies. The last movie I’ve seen was Iron Man 2.

it was 105 yesterday here in Texas...
…the heat advisory lasted until 9pm. UGH.
I’m terrible at watching movies…I only saw Toy Story 3 and Iron Man 2 off that list.
Okay I know I’m being a big baby here, but I hate this weather! And I’m where it’s a bit cooler near the airport. I couldnt’ sleep last night and it’s suppose to be hotter today. I want winter already. ugh!
As to movies – I watched the Sweden version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the follow up The Girl who Played with Fire over the summer. Great movies both.

This summer wasn’t all that great as far as movies that came out.
I saw Inception which was good. A-team was alright. Dinner for Schmucks kept my attention. And i wanted to see Predators, but never got around to it.

Get Him to the Greek was surprisingly funny, actually, and I enjoyed Iron Man 2. Though I have yet to see Inception (only person left on the planet, probably)

I’ve only seen Toy Story 3 this summer as far as movies go. There’s very few movies that have interested me any more (though I have kicked myself for not seeing Avatar when it was in theaters).

I did not like Avatar. talk about an over-rated piece of crap. Yeah the effects were kind of cool I guess, but I wasn’t blown away. The 3D was distracting even. I can’t watch effects driven movies, I just don’t really care.
My biggest complaint was the story and writing. it was just so cliche and predictable. It was really uninteresting. See it if you want, just for the experience, but I did not care for it.

I liked Avatar, but I didn’t love it. I liked it because, in my view, it was a visual masterpiece. I thought the 3D, for once in a movie, was actually done supurbly. But you are right, the storyline and the writing were terribly banal. All the money for that movie went into the visuals and viewing experience, and none to any writers, it seems.
Worth seeing in IMAX 3D if you get a chance, IMO, but not really worth buying on dvd or blu ray until 3D tv’s are perfected and made to be giant.

Yeah,. that’s why I was kicking myself for not seeing in the first theatrical run. My roommate had the DVD and offered to let me watch it, but it’s not the same in 480i on a standard-def TV as it would be on a big IMAX screen and in 3D.

oh please oh please oh please
do NOT let 3D TV ever happen. I am so deadset against that.
I really do not understand the attraction of 3D. yeah it looks kind of cool sometimes, but it’s gimmick and one that I find distracting from the movie or show or whatever. HD is something I can get behind that is pure enhancement of quality.
3D is just another excuse for them to raise prices and charge more. avatar was the first and last movie I will ever see in 3D.
wait, scratch that. I might see Piranha 3D, but that is SUPPOSED to be a campy cheesey flick so the 3D fits.
still, I don’t think 3D will ever fully catch on until they make it so you don’t have to wear glasses. that is the small beacon of hope I have against the call for more 3D.
Proud member of the "Bring Back Semenov" Club
I hate to be the one to do this...
But 3D tv is already developed. Its not main stream yet, but its already available if you have the money to pay for it and willing to pigeon-hole yourself with a few select brands.

God I hate 3D movies
It just hurts my eyes.
When you create the illusion of 3D your brain doesn’t understand that it’s really just 2 2D images. That leads me to try to focus on things that are not in focus in the movie… but you can’t, because the actual image is blurry. This leads to me having splitting headaches.
Fuck I hate 3D.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda
That actually has nothing to do with the technology but more to do with the fact that filmmakers are used to only putting what you’re supposed to look at in focus. It’s usually possible to make an entire scene come into focus, it’s just that filmmakers haven’t thought of other ways of bringing your attention to a certain part of the screen.
still, I don’t think 3D will ever fully catch on until they make it so you don’t have to wear glasses.
The upcoming Nintendo 3DS has already achieved this, IIRC.

I’ll agree for the most part on 3D being crap and a marketing ploy. Alice in Wonderland had shitty 3D, Clash of the Titans had really shitty 3D. But in my opinion, Avatar’s 3D was done spectacularly. First and only movie I’ve ever seen in 3D where I felt it was worth it.

I liked the video game Skies of Arcadia, so cliche-ridden stories don’t matter to me as much as long as the rest of the package is superbly done. And from what I’ve heard the non-story parts of Avatar are exactly that.

I voted for Inception because it was my favorite movie I’ve seen this summer. I almost voted for The Expendables, because THAT movie is what summer is all about (weak story, no thinking involved, lots of explosions…really, what’s more entertaining than that???). Maybe I’ll go see a movie today after work to beat the heat. My house doesn’t have central air…ugh.
Also, I miss the part of summer where it’s been 75 and sunny with a light breeze. Maybe I’ve been spoiled this summer by the awesome weather, but I can really do without Campbell’s 95-100 degree heat this week.

I almost want to watch the movie just to see how M. Night Shyamalan f’ed it up.

it gets A LOT better after the 1st season. a lot of stuff goes down. i personally thought that season 2 was the best of the 3, even though all my favorites episodes are in season 3.

Oh yeah, is anyone going to the October 8-9 Sharks v. Columbus games?
We’ve been trying to go, but it’s been a nightmare getting tickets and trying to get ’em to accept American credit cards. We could go through another ticket service, but they jack up the prices by over 50% (and screw that). Has anyone managed to get tickets?
ROAD TRIP IDEA
On Saturday, February 5th, the San Jose Sharks are playing the Boston Bruins at 1pm. That much has been known for awhile.
Well, the AHL schedule was released an hour ago, and the same day, the Worcester Sharks are hosting their arch-rival, the Providence Bruins. Game time = 7pm.
ZeroIndulgence and I are already planning to go; anyone else interested?

I hate searching for jobs
I haven’t had a job since Monday (long story), and looking at Monster and HotJobs reminds me why I hate job searching. Everything in the tech industry these days requires at least 6 years professional experience, experience in stuff my job didn’t give time to look at. It’s absolutely frustrating to be relatively inexperienced in this field.

"Skillet, we just spent $64,000 in that bar. So we're gonna have to get jobs to cover up the fact that we rob banks" -Mouse Fitzgerald
took me a loooong time too
and I ran into the same issues with needing more experience in just about every field I applied in. Jobs I KNEW I could do, could learn to do, and nothing because my sheet of paper was a spot on match. Gave up looking for like 6 months because it was so frustrating. I was so desperate at the end I applied to Yogurtland. (I was over qualified, lol!)
Good luck to you and sincerely I hope you find a job relatively quickly.

Job searching is nooooo fun
I’ve been searching for a teaching job since April, with no luck. I even finished my Masters, but apparently it hasn’t impressed employers as much as I thought it would.
use something like indeed.com to do your job searches … it combines these other search places results in one … craigslist is another good source
also don’t worry so much bout the “not enough experience” thing .. put in your resume for everything … last two jobs I got was not for the position I applied for, but the company liked my resume and saw that I would be a good fit for another position they had opened … or they can see you have potential and will take you anyways
good luck!

yeah, I got most of my responses from Craigslist ads. Monster.com did jack squat. Also try LinkedIn. Seriously. Connections galore. You never know who might be looking for someone. Having a connection already in the company to recommend me is how I got an interview for the job I have currently. I am eternally grateful for that.
