A return to San Jose for Owen Nolan? It's possible, and why it makes sense for the Sharks

As the off season drags on, the noise surrounding the San Jose Sharks makes church mice sound deafening.

It's quiet.

Until Willie Mitchell signs, there's always going to be some intrigue there. Although that may happen as early as today, there isn't much to discuss on the Mitchell front; he either signs here or he doesn't. And even if Mitchell were to sign, there are still some holes on the team.

The bottom six forward group, while mostly complete, looks thin. Doug Wilson brought aboard Jamal Mayers and resigned Scott Nichol to fill out the fourth line, and it looks like Logan Couture and Jamie McGinn will find themselves entrenched somewhere in the bottom six as well. Torrey Mitchell, who came on a bit as the season ended last year, will fit in somewhere too. That leaves one forward spot up for grabs.

Wilson is always one to tout the depth of the Sharks system. and rightfully so. By my count, there are at least four players who could be interchanged in that role depending on the team need. Still, there's a name out there on the free agent market that just makes too much sense to ignore. And he's currently skating with the team.

Now, Owen Nolan always skates in the Sharks' informal practices in the off season. This year, though, is different. As of today, Nolan hasn't signed a contract with any other team, making his presence in San Jose all the more intriguing. Although he left the Sharks in 2003 when traded to the Maple Leafs, he's maintained a residence here and still owns a couple restaurants in the city. San Jose means alot to him, and he's meant volumes to both the city and the franchise. Nolan remains near the top in almost every major statistical category, and when he retires, he'll be remembered as a Shark.

Michael Russo, the Minnesota Wild beat writer for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, mentioned recently via Twitter that Nolan was looking forward to playing this season after two strong years in Minnesota. Russo also mentioned that Nolan would prefer a California team, and also hinted that he thought Nolan would like to retire as a member of the Sharks.

The last two points are merely conjecture, but the fact remains that Nolan wants to play next year. Add in the idea that it would be a nice story for both the team and the player, and rumors are bound to pop up.

The Sharks shouldn't bring him back for nostalgia's sake. Although, as my colleague Ivan Makarov pointed out, the merchandise sales would be astronomical. No, they should bring Nolan aboard because he fits multiple team needs for a purportedly reasonable price.

Star-divide

At the trade deadline just a few months ago, I was vehemently opposed to trading for Owen Nolan. Things have changed since then. Signing Nolan, now an unrestricted free agent, wouldn't require any pieces... my main problem with a deal for Nolan last year. Now, as a pure money play, it makes sense. He's not going to count $2.75MM against the cap, as he would have last season. With jobs drying up and money in short supply, it would shock me if the 38 year old Nolan were to receive anything in excess of $1MM annually.

What needs does Nolan fit, roster wise? First, he improves secondary scoring. Although he was in the middle of the pack among Minnesota's forward group in terms of quality of competition according to behindthenet.ca, Nolan still chipped in 16 goals on a weak offensive team. Logan Couture will likely replace most of the scoring leaving with Manny Malhotra, but adding Nolan's almost guaranteed 16 tallies (he's scored 16 goals or more in each of his last five seasons) wouldn't hurt. Nearing his 40's, it's unlikely that Nolan will hit the 25 goal mark he did two years ago, but playing with San Jose (a team that is better offensively by leaps and bounds), it's not crazy to think he could net 20.

Second, Nolan brings the Sharks another player capable of playing penalty minutes. Although Wilson brought Jamal Mayers aboard to plug this hole, we've discussed how poor a penalty killer Mayers actually is. While Nolan hasn't been the most defensively sound forward at points in his career, he did play 1.42 minutes per 60 on the penalty kill, top six amongst Wild forwards. Again, Nolan wasn't playing against top competition, but he had a favorable GAON/GAOFF ratio, posting a 5.79/6.14. Mayers, as a comparison, posted a ghastly 19.42/8.30.

Even though Couture and McGinn will be depended on to make up some of the minutes lost as a result of Malhotra and Ortmeyer leaving, it's always nice to have guys who can effectively kill penalties. Nolan fits the bill here.

The last main thing that Nolan brings, in my opinion, is a veteran leadership that this team lacks on the lower lines. Nolan is one of the NHL's elder statesmen, and a trusted voice around the NHL. While he had the reputation of being somewhat of a malcontent earlier in his career, those days appear to be past him. He'd be a perfect mentor and line mate for the young McGinn and Couture, and would help to make that line a real offensive weapon for the Sharks.

The prospective addition of Nolan reminds me somewhat of the addition of Jeremy Roenick just a few years ago. Doug Wilson doesn't have a problem bringing on older players if he feels that they can add to the team. Nolan definitely can, and although his addition would come at the expense of playing time for a young forward, he's no slouch. Nolan would likely bring more productive minutes than anyone else in the system, and add experience to a line that lacks any real veteran presence.

As the off season rolls on, and the informal Captain's Skates become formal team activity, don't be surprised if Nolan sticks around. Signs point to a return to San Jose for the former captain, and I'm all for the idea.

Go Sharks.

I believe bringing Nolan back makes perfect sense.

Adds a vet to the forwards, and could make sense after we get that much needed D-man for the top 4.

And yeah, it would make a hell of a XX Anniversary Sweater.

I mentioned in the previous thread...

That it might make sense for SJ to sign him to a tryout contract like was done last year with a couple players I believe.

I also agree that we shouldn’t sign him unless he can really play. Obviously over 35 contracts count and we up against the cap.

It seems like it’s a team’s market right now and unfortunetly for us fans and Owen, it might be to the teams benefit to go that route.

Nolan might be willing to attend camp without a contract because it’s SJ. I’ve seen previous interviews with Owen where he pretty much said he’d love to retire in SJ.

It makes sense to me at least…

Quite frankly

I might have preferred Nolan to be signed in lieu of Mayers, but that’s a lot of quibbling against a guy who has yet to play a single game for us.

I talked to a buddy of mine who’s a Leaf’s fan, and a generally honest one at that, and has no qualms with stating who does and doesn’t suck on the Leaf’s roster, and he called Mayers a good locker room guy.

Maybe we could have a new Monsters of Medicare line with Buster, Mayers, and someone else. Think Chris Chelios wants to play forward?

All in all, I’d be a fan of bringing Nolan back. I think this year’s squad is going to greatly miss Manny Malhotra. Logan Couture is going to have to really take his spot, being the jack of all trades, able to play on any line and being that vital scoring depth. If he can set up a crease-crasher like Nolan, I think you’re spot on TCY in that Nolan could be a 20 goal scorer from the third line.

Also gone with Manny Malhotra is a bit of bruising. One Punch Manny didn’t drop many times for us, but we always knew he could, meaning we didn’t HAVE to rely on Shelley and Staubitz. It’d be nice to have some sandpaper come back to the lineup.

Hmm… Yeah, from the post on FTF, I’ve been a bit unexcited about Mayers so far – and I’m a bit confused as to why we have a forward like Mayers before we have a good D-man, but whatever. I’m also excited to see what Couture can do this year as well. It will be interesting to see if he can grow into Manny’s role more this year – though I don’t really see Couture as ever being much a bruiser, but maybe I’m mistaken on this?

Hahahahha Monsters of Medicare.

There isn’t a timeline for signings. GMs don’t tend to go, “well, i want to get a D man, then a goalie, then a 4th line forward.” They identify holes and fill them as they get a chance to do so. Mayers’ cap hit doesn’t really change our situation, nor preclude us from getting a D man later…

True. I guess I found it more surprising because I wouldn’t think Mayers is going anywhere (I don’t think he was on any other team’s wishlist, was he?), and waiting longer may have made us aware of other opportunities (like Nolan). But maybe this was a bit of flawed thinking on my part, because it’s not like there’s going to be a flood of great forwards into the market, and Mayers wasn’t signed THAT early ahead of training camp.

please to be exiting my eyebrow parade, son. You appear to be raining on it. - CTGray

by ninakix on Aug 24, 2010 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Eh I bet other teams would’ve gladly picked Mayers up at the price we got him at.

It wasn’t long ago he looked to be a perennial 20+ point scorer. He had 27 points a couple years ago, not bad for an enforcer who was also solid defensively. (and hopefully will be again)

by Khaaz on Aug 24, 2010 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

It was a hole that management felt needed to be filled, of the options that remained out there they felt Mayers was a good choice and got him at nearly the league minimum. There was no point waiting any longer as there are no players slated to become UFA’s until next summer and his cost is the same as any other player filling that spot in the line up.

I don’t really understand the dislike of signing Mayers, if he sucks, he gets waived, no big deal, it’s not like we gave him 2.5 and an NTC.

Cheech isn’t fast enough to be a pure defensive forward, so he has to be able to score. Doug Wilson should take Mike Ricci and do some abominable, against-God-and-Nature mind switch with Cheech, then stick him on the 3rd line.

Or Cheech should take some time off, heal his freakin’ groin for a year, and get to a point where his sweet, sweet hands and bull-like strength will work for him again.

I’ve wanted Owen Nolan this entire offseason, and not for nostalgic reasons.

We need more experience on the bottom lines, and Nolan’s experience would surely contribute to the progression of Couture and McGinn. His right handed shot, grit and work ethic would complement Couture/McGinn perfectly.

The only area that would be lacking on the third line would be faceoff depth, as Nolan was not very effective at the dots IIRC.

This move would push Mitchell to the 4th line…I think a Michell/Nichol/Mayers 4th line would have a nice blend of speed, toughness and FO ability.

We just traded who for who?!

I wouldn’t mind Nolan signing here, and I likewise wouldn’t be upset if we didn’t sign him too. I’ve never been one for nostalgia, so that really doesn’t factor into my decision. But the dude has put up some goals pretty consistantly over the last many seasons. I’d take 15 goals from a third line player. If he can also help Couture get to 20 and McGinn get to 15, then we have a pretty potent 3rd line…although that’s probably asking a lot. And he can chip in some PK minutes. All in all, it would be a fine signing. Although, if we don’t sign him and decide to go with a kid from Worcester (Ferriero, anyone?), well, that’s fine too.

Of course, we all know DW has yet to sign his “old guy looking to retire on a winner” guy yet this offseason, so it very well could happen with Owen.

This is an awesome idea, he’d be a great fit. I had thought about it before but I didn’t thik it could happen since i assumed we’d be up against the cap pretty hard, but cap space shouldn’t be an issue for signing a guy like him at this point in his career.

The sad thing is that he was a good scorer with a nose for the net before Thornton got here. It’s not like he sucked, was put on Jumbo’s wing, got the Richard, then sucked again. It’s more like he was a good 2nd line power forward worth a consistent 25 goals or so, hit on all cylinders with Joe, pulled his groin one too many times, and lost everything.

I’m all for this, and would totally buy his jersey!
Don’t think he should be captain though.

Well, no, Huskins should be C, but maybe Nolan can be an A!

Dont we wind up talking about this every year?

If it’s any year, it has to be this one.

He always played so well against us too. Didnt he get a hat trick against us when he played for Calgary?

Don't think anyone linked this yet

But this article headlined PD

How weird would it be to see Nolan come back though? Patty’s the only player left on the team from his last days in teal. I’m sure the adjustment wouldn’t be so bad since he’s been participating in Captain’s Ice for a while now.

Nolan

Was my faveorite player when I was a kid. If the Sharks bring him back I might just have to go stalk him. I still have his jersey from when I was 6 time for the long awaited autograph.

Nolan would be awesome

Provided he’s cheap, doesn’t serve as a locker room distraction, and doesn’t cause McGinn to rack up the miles on the Worcester shuttle again. But I think it’s safe to say that all of those conditions would probably be met if he signs. I have a feeling that he’ll likely sign after Willie Mitchell decides where he’s going to go, so the Sharks know how much money they have to work with.

Also, I was reading Nolan’s wikipedia page, and I find it quite funny that three of the five events considered momentous enough to be listed under the “Later Years” section was against the Sharks. The guy really does reach milestones against us.

Makes me think

We only think he’s still awesome because we only watch when he plays against the Sharks… He’s always awesome against the Sharks…

If we sign him, he’ll never play against the Sharks… what if he’s not awesome the rest of the time?

He might run opposition goaltenders or score from center ice or call his shot

I’m good with any of those.

Thats crazy…..

1. 11th career hatrick against us on On January 30, 2008,

2. On April 13, 2008, Nolan scored the game winning goal in game 3 of the first round of the 2008 NHL Playoffs against his former team San Jose Sharks

3. On March 10, 2009, Nolan scored his 400th (and 401st) goal of his NHL career with the Minnesota Wild against the San Jose Sharks

Maybe this means that if he plays for us we will be amazing, its like he only has amazing milestones when he faces us or plays with us :) OMG

If Nolan does come back

I guess that means McLaren stays in Woosta year?

Proud member of the "Bring Back Semenov" Club

by PNK on Aug 25, 2010 7:25 AM PDT reply actions

I think it does.

As much as I want to see McLaren patrolling our 4th line, we already have an enforcer in Mayers and another year in the AHL could give McLaren minutes to develop the other aspects of his game. If McLaren improves, he could become a 3rd line guy next year…if he doesn’t improve, he could fill Mayers shoes next year.

We just traded who for who?!

Torres signs in Vancouver for 1M

That’s probably about the same price range Nolan should expect.

Also, does that mean there is no way they fit Mitchell in considering they’re now 3.6 over the cap?

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Freeing up the necessary cap space would be quite the exercise at this point.

Man, it’s so much easier to just sit on Twitter all summer, haha. I think bringing Nolan back on the cheap almost makes too much sense. Ever since his departure, Nolan’s shown a penchant for consistently tormenting us on the scoreboard, almost as if he saved his best performances for when the Sharks were playing one of his 4 subsequent clubs. It’ll be interesting to see who Sharkspage chose for Mt. Puckmore, because I don’t see how Nolan doesn’t make the cut. In any case, production aside, the point I agree with most is the leadership aspect, and the Roenick comparison is very apt. The only veteran presence in the bottom six is Nichol and Mayers, but while a player such as Nichol may command the respect of his teammates, he’s not necessarily the leader Nolan is – particularly considering Nolan’s worn the “C” on more than one of his teams.

No on Nolan!

He is not needed and would take away from development from our younger players.

This Nolan talk surfaces every year and it’s never been a good idea.

Nolan was a part of Sharks history and he should stay that way. You want to sign him to a one-day retirement deal? Fine, but the Sharks should be moving on from their past.

by iggyfenton on Aug 25, 2010 10:25 AM PDT via mobile reply actions

The way I see it working out is this. Owen Nolan was a huge part of the sharks and turned alot of people on to them, he is nearing retirement, why not give him a shot at his first Cup this year which we will get ><… Soooo look how this plays out, one of our greatest players returns to the team 7 years later and wins his first cup with the team he impacted the most, the team I’m sure he was the happiest at.

I’m sure Nolan doesn’t give a shit about how much he gets paid now, he just wants to win a fucking cup and the Sharks are the team that will help him do that, b/c we are GOING TO WIN A FUCKING CUP NEXT YEAR!

by THEMARD on Aug 25, 2010 10:44 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t see any of these as sound reasoning.

Reason and Owen Nolan

Don’t enter the same thought process for Sharks fans. Much like Cheechoo and reason.

I should know. I’m one of those Sharks fans who wants the both of them back!

I’m told clubs have been notified they are out of Mitchell race. Look for LA Kings to announce Willie Mitchell soon on a multi year deal.

New update from Pollack.
Never say never, but do not expect to see Owen Nolan back with the Sharks this season. Just not going to happen, says a front-office source.

He says Nolan isn’t gonna happen. Reasoning in the link, as well as info on Niemi and Willie Mitchell.

Blue Line Depth

It seems to me there are more options than just trading Clowe, such as trading younger guys; however the thought of that kind of makes parting with Clowe a bit easier, although seeing him in another team’s jersey will truly sadden me.
However, parting with Clowe also means that we are parting with an incredibly slow forward. I know that Clowe is gritty, I own his jersey for sh!tts sake, but he clearly is slower than Pavs/Seto and I think that before considering bumping up Logan Couture, Torrey Mitchell should be considered. He’s nearly as gritty (although prone to injury, and THAT KID CAN SKATE!!!! I am actually starting to consider this an upgrade as we can then also have Zalewski or some other minor player start playing 4th line sub. Now to jump on the Bieksa bandwaggon haha

by Scarlett, Gold and Teal on Aug 28, 2010 8:26 AM PDT reply actions

forgot to include

Trading Clowe is also an OVERALL defensive upgrade. Clowe was a +/- 0 last year although he had 57pts and the second line was fairly productive (this also doesn’t include the goals scored on pp due to a Clowe fight, not complaining just thinking Stanley). This minus shows his deficiency on D, I know he has a great stick, but we need to be real!!!
