Owen Nolan is an awesome guy. He skated on the ice with his son, holding him up so he could take shots with the small stick he had. Talked to his wife a bit. He’s still UFA, and they’re still hoping he lands a contract soon.
A few of us here sure hope so too. To quote TCY when I twittered this photo, “Throw some teal on that guy!”
That’s all I’ve got, folks! I have to run some of these though Photoshop to clean them up, but if anyone wants 6 Megapixel versions, drop me a line. More than happy to share. I shoot RAW format, so the color corrections should come out pretty decent.

Well, now that I'm no longer a "newbie," it's really not all that bad....
Most important item is that the entrance for the South rink is about 30 yards ssouth of the main entrance. Bring a sweater (remember, there’s ice in there!), and a thermos of Coffee, tea, or cocoa (whichever is your poison), such that it stays warm.
When taking photos be aware that other people are there trying to watch and take pictures too (read: don’t crowd the prime glass, or you’ll get an ear full). I ended up on the far site (eastern end) near Niittymaki most of the day. Nobody was behind me, and the majority of the player shots that came out well were from that end as I wasn’t worrying about crowding out someone’s view. Top bleachers are good for this too, but the heaters can obstruct some of the prime shooting lines.
If you’re looking for signatures, bring a (reasonable) amount of swag that you may want your favorite player(s) to sign. I went for the pictures, but, in retrospect, I should have gotten a few autographs on my Away Jersey. I’m not the kind, though, that wants to be a spectacle when they come out, and I try to be mindful of their space (i.e. “Jesus, dude! let me SHOWER!”). Next time I go, I’ll try to hit up Greiss and Nitty. (As you all know, I’m a goalie guy).
Owen Nolan was a pretty awesome. Again, I was trying to be respectful of his space, but he’s definitely one of those players that appreciates the energy from the fan base. I really do hope that he lands something this season (hopefully here).
The bittersweet thing of the day is something that didn’t hit me till later—man, it would have been awesome to shoot pictures of Nabby at practice.

Please excuse my stupid question here… but this is my 2nd year as a Sharks fan (thx to my boyfriend and his buddy!!) but how do you go about watching the Sharks practice? I think that would be way cool to check out!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing these pics. I was over at Sharks Ice last Wednesday and took lots of pics, but yours are much better – obviously your camera is much better than mine, too!
It took me about 5 minutes to figure out who the guy in the Redwings jersey was, but then remembered that Brad lives in SJ and practices with the team every year. There were also a few other non-Sharks on the ice that I later discovered were members of the SJSU ice hockey team – what a nice perk for them to get to skate with the Sharks!
It was great seeing the boys back on the ice and also that such a big part of the core team was already back in SJ and gearing up for the season – that’s a good sign.
And lastly, Noctro, I also spent a few minutes mourning the absence of our Nabby, but as you said, time to move forward!

It had actually been a while since I shot. I was telling my wife that it took me about 30 minutes to get consistently good shots going.
My big investment this year will probably be a fast f/2.8 120-300 Nikkor lens. Should cut the distance to the subject by 1/3.

Was he still skating with the team this week? It was so good to see him. He had an ear-to-ear grin the entire time he was on the ice with his former teammates – so good to see him, but sad that he hasn’t been picked up by anyone, as of yet. He was wearing his Sens jersey inside out – pretty funny!
