Yeah, I doubt this as well. Unless there’s an injury or something we haven’t heard about yet, this makes no sense. Greiss needs a chance, and DW would not have signed Niittymaki if he was going to do this.

I don’t know about this yet, still don’t think DW is that contradictory.

best part about it would be that he took CHI to arbitration and then would have signed for less here if this happens. Granted it’s only 500K less, but still a discount.

Still don’t like this, as far as we know Niitty could be better than Niemi anyway.

Trade Greiss? I guess we could, if we really have as many prospects as everyone says in the works – but still, that means we’re looking at Niitty or Niemi as our goalie for a while. I guess DW really is ready to stand between the two!?

Greiss has too much potential to just sit. With Stalock coming up, maybe DW sees a split between Nitty/Niemi and if either one catches fire, ride em out. We have Nitty for 2 years, and if Niemi bites the big one and Greiss is traded, Stalock can ride backup/1a slot next year.

This is all trying to figure out what sam hell is going on here…

A team that has shallow goaltending depth and a stud d-man could possibly want a goalie prospect in the deal. Can’t think of any teams off the top of my head, but with our goaltending depth, I’d rather trade a goalie prospect instead of someone like Couture, Ferriero, etc…

I guess this is just DW’s way of saying he’s given up on getting a top 4 defenseman. Any defenseman he might try to acquire before the trade deadline will be done via trade so he probably figures he doesn’t need much extra cap space.

I guess it kind of makes sense assuming the deal is only for 1 year. What else are we going to do with the cap space at this point?

lol i’m jk. I just remember freaking out about how our goaltending pipeline would be hurt or something if we signed a young goaltender like Carey Price. Now we’ve signed 2 starting goaltneders, one of which is really young and could be around for a while. Whoever was worried about our “pipeline” before must be FREAKING out now lol.

by Khaaz on Sep 1, 2010 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, Khaaz I am freaking out. IMO, barring this being fake (see Brazil’s tweet) or a sign and trade Niitty (which is just a dick move that will be sure to endear the Sharks to future free agents), signing Niemi is a ridiculously stupid decision. It makes Greiss, who I doubt is any worse than Niemi, worthless since other teams know we have no room for him. It’s still not as bad as offer sheeting Price since there’ll be less of a sunk cost issue if he sucks.

by tarlinian on Sep 1, 2010 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I mean, we have “room” for him, just in the minors. I don’t think this is fake, I also don’t think we’re going to move Niitty… Perhaps keeping Greiss’ value was why they’re pushing hard to keep this on the downlow?

This is absurd. I mean, I know nearly everyone here has been brushing off the rumors as pure nonsense for most of the offseason, including myself. It just didn’t seem feasible or rational for us to sign Niemi, from a skill perspective, salary cap perspective, and based on DW’s insistence that Nitty was “our guy”. Ugh…this is so infuriating.

On the plus side, this has trade written all over it, as we’re left with nearly no cap space. I’ll defer passing judgment until this whole thing blows over.

Trying to be positive

which is difficult for me any time, especially now…

- I never found a reason to personally dislike Niemi, except for him stoning our asses
- He might be more motivated than ever, especially after sort of being disrespected by the Hawks
- The contract sounds pretty damn good
- He is young—if he continues to bring it, it’d be nice to have him in net for a long time

by Timorous Me on Sep 1, 2010 1:20 PM PDT reply actions

He wasn't disrespected by the Hawks

The Hawks were up front with how much they could afford to pay him. His agent knew that. The Hawks offered him a one-year deal with the idea that if he could continue his good play throughout the next year he’d be rewarded with a more lucrative deal. He and his agent declined. So they go to arbitration, and Niemi goes in asking for a number that the Hawks would never agree to – so it sounds to me like he wanted out.

"It's the Chicago Blackhawks man." - Jeremy Roenick

by The Fearless Freep on Sep 1, 2010 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

It was a business decision and I’m sure he understood it, but I also think, deep down, he has to be thinking that if they really appreciated his efforts, the Hawks could have found a way to keep him instead of someone else. But they thought he was expendable. Right or wrong, and whether or not they went about it in a professional manner, it’s still the truth of the matter.

by Timorous Me on Sep 1, 2010 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I think it became a matter of “do we unload another player (like Sharp or Seabrook) to keep Niemi, or do we take our chances on getting another goaltender?” In that regard, yes, I think in the Hawks minds it was all about business – who is more expendable. I’m sure Stan wanted to keep Niemi, but the question came down to “who ya gonna keep?”

Keep in mind DW’s offer sheet to Hammer really changed the financial environment the Hawks had to deal with. In a way, that offer sheet set in motion the whole Niemi situation.

I’m sure it was difficult for all parties involved.

Oh, I agree on all those points. My main line of thinking is just that the competitive athlete is always looking at ways to mentally gain an edge, and I think it would be easy to quietly think of this as a bit of a snub and really focus when it comes to the playoffs next season—to prove wrong all the doubters that say he’s a one-hit wonder.

What else were we going to do with our cap space this season? We can still trade Clowe/Murray/Huskins/whoever for a top 4 defenseman at the trade deadline and likely be ok on cap space.

With this move we’ve made an upgrade in net (potentially) and acquired a trade chip that we might be able to use later. We should still have enough cap space to acquire a top 4 guy assuming Clowe or Murray are sent off in the trade.

by Khaaz on Sep 1, 2010 1:24 PM PDT reply actions

Except for the fact that absorbing an additional $2 million cap hit in Niemi means we’ll have to potentially give up more in order to free up enough cap space for the mythical d-man.

We wouldn’t trade all of them of course. We’d likely trade either Clowe or Murray + a pick.

by Khaaz on Sep 1, 2010 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions

We’re not gonna be able to get a top 4 dman trading huskins or something. We’ll likely need to trade Ryane Clowe, or murray at the very least. Assuming we trade Clowe, we’d then have 4.8+ million cap space which is more than enough fo ra top 4 D.

by Khaaz on Sep 1, 2010 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think my point was that it makes it a lot harder having nearly no cap space left.

by OtherKid on Sep 1, 2010 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

DW has said he wants to acquire another defenseman before the trade deadline and i’m sure he wouldn’t have made this move without knowing that he’d still have enough cap space to acquire a number 4 guy. Maybe Niemi is involved in the trade for a top 4 guy this season? Philly is probably going to want a better goaltender assuming they can make the playoffs. Niemi + Huskins for Braydon Coburn? Yes plz.

Why all the angst over Greiss? I don’t think he’s anything special. If we have no chance of upgrading our blueline until closer to the trading deadline, then I see nothing wrong with using our remaining cap space to upgrade the overall goalie talent. And I believe this does that.

That will end up being the $2 million question for the Hawks too. Did his play have more to do with his blueliners or with his own talent? I’m guessing somewhere in between. Certainly it will be an adjustment, but I think he’s a lot tougher than he may let on. He’ll be ready to play.

In your face!

Signing Nolan has to happen now, after people stated it wouldnt happen. I couldnt give a shit about the other guy.

My feelings on this:

DW always says he’ll do whatever to make the team better. Perhaps the talent in the pipeline (Sateri, Sexy) werent as talented as billed and Stalock will need a few years. Greiss’ deal is two way and he hasnt played all that many games yet. Perhaps if him and Stalock split a few starts with Sateri and Sexy playing between Stockton and Kalamazoo this might be the best way to not have to rush our prospects.

How often do goalies go down mid-season?

By my count that makes us have 3-4 legit goalies that other teams would have to over pay to get from us in trade.

Stalock is the future.
Greiss was supposed to be the future.
Niemi and Nitty are the present.
With the Sharks cap considerations, I’m not sure if they can just bury Greiss in the AHL without exposing him to waivers. I think DW saw the opportunity to grab a cup-winning goalie, regardless of how overrated that goalie actually is, and pulled the trigger. Not too many of those on the market and frankly I can’t blame because there’s only a handful of those goalies on the market. But Niemi sucks and DW should know that.

This past year's playoffs...

Number of games in which the goalie gave up 4+ goals:

Nabby: 3
Niemi: 8

Number of games in which the goalie had worse than a .900 SV%:

Nabby: 6
Niemi: 12

Niemi was in no way, shape, or form “exceptional.” Nor was he great, good, or even above average. He had a spectacular blueline and a team that could score. I’m pretty sure any goalie in the NHL could have been in net for Chicago and they would have won the cup. Hell, half the goalies in the league would have made things less interesting for Chicago than Niemi did.

First, Niemi is no better than who we already had. Niittymaki, Niemi, Griess would all most likely put up similar stats over a full season. And, realistically they did last year (all had similar SV%). His performance in the playoffs, outside of the San Jose series, was pedestrian at best. He had among the worst stats ever by a SC Winning goalie in the playoffs. He won his Cup because of the most amazing blueline ever and a deep, talented forward corps that could score enough to make up for his 3 GAA in the playoffs (outside of our series).

Next, if DW wanted to spend 4 million on goalies in the FA market, he could have spent it on EVGENI NABOKOV! I’m sure he would have stayed on at 5 million, which would totally fit under the Cap at this point if you subtracted Niitty and Niemi. The point, I thought, in letting Nabby walk was that the Sharks wanted to spend the Cap space on a better blueline! Not more goaltending! Ugh.

This just makes so little sense on so many levels.

The only way this makes sense is if a team called and wanted Greiss as part of a trade for a blueline upgrade. Then I can accept signing Niemi as Niitty’s backup. Otherwise, I am completely stumped as to why DW would spend more money to bring in an inferior goaltender.

$2 million as backup? Nah, I guess Nitty and Niemi are going to platoon 50-30 or 40-40 split. But I agree with you man, this is freaking confusing. It’s like DW is playing Rommel head of the Afrika Corps and sending up all these smoke signals and screens to confuse the enemy.

Niemi sucks. Chicago would’ve won with Huet in net. In fact, the argument could be made that Chicago might’ve lost the SCF with Niemi in net.
Niemi had the worst save% and the worst GAA of any modern-era Stanley Cup winning goaltender. Wow.

Patty Marleau lives an erotic life.

If Nashville D doesn't shit the bed in game five

We’d be hoisting the cup. Niemi almost singlehandedly gave Nashville the series.

I have no idea what DW is thinking. He’ll explain himself tomorrow, but of course we won’t get anything besides “he is the guy we always wanted, a proven winner, blah blah blah.”

But both Fins are signed for short term. Nabokov might have stayed for $5M, but DW wasn’t going to give him four years he got in Russia.

At Nabby’s age, who’d want a shorter contract?

FINS hahahaahahah

So, do we think DW will say anything at the pressconference that starts in a minute?

And nabby could have stuck around here for two years and still gotten his big contract in Russia after that just on name alone. I think 2 years for 5 per keeps Nabby, and at the time DW was saying he didn’t want that much tied up in goaltending…

We have no idea he was interested in 2 year contract.

2 years is a bad time, btw. This is when lockout is going to happen.

Except Nabby is Russian and has an elite name. I’d think he’d still be able to get a good contract in the KHL then.

But, of course, this is all speculation.

He’s making a lot of money now because he’s still relatively young (comparing him to Hasek) and he’s a big NHL name. Most of the other Russians actually earn very little compared to former NHL players.

Either way, DW didn’t give any offers to Nabokov. It’s time we move on too.

Not so fast then.

Could be the same source spreading rumors that sent Marleau to LA a year ago and sent us all into a frenzy.

If I have learned anything from following the Sharks it’s that we can speculate all we want about trades and never know anything until the last minute. DW will have a plan in place to fill the shortcomings on the team like he always has. Now we just sit back and watch.

But we'll never do that. Because it's the off season and it's the only thing we have to cling to.
