Wallin's foot injury "not healing as quickly as he'd like"

Photo

According to CSN's Brodie Brazil, Niclas Wallin is still having some issues with a foot injury that bothered him last season:

Doug Wilson not concerned by Wallin's foot injury. Wallin says it's not healing as quickly as he'd like.

Wilson seemed confident that Wallin would be fine for the regular season.

>> Brodie Brazil, via Twitter

The 35 year old defenseman has averaged 66 games over the last three seasons, and is apparently still struggling with (presumably) the same ailments that kept him out of seven playoff games last year during San Jose's run to the Western Conference Finals.

Wallin was a -3 in six games played during the playoffs, logging 10:40 per game when he was in the lineup.

This turn of events is surprising considering the circumstances surrounding this offseason-- he was inked to a $2.5MM one-year deal on June 27th, three full days before free agency opened across the NHL. It was initially seen as an overpayment by Fear The Fin, and after a long summer where comparable defenseman such as Paul Mara and Ruslan Salei signed contracts well under one million dollars, that assertion hasn't taken much of a hit.

Although Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson stated that he was not concerned by Wallin's injury, and fully expects him to be back for the beginning of the season, the fact that four months of non-strenuous activity (i.e. non-game situations) has not been ample time to rehabilitate the injury should be somewhat of a concern.

Attentive readers will remember the back and forth that happened last season when a trade for Wallin was reported, called off, and then eventually completed. Rumors surrounding the deal implied that Wallin was looking for a contract extension in order to waive his no-trade clause from Carolina-- and although that extension wasn't officially given during the season, it's possible that a verbal agreement between the two parties was reached which ensured Wallin would be extended a contract for the 2010-2011 campaign. In other words, San Jose could have been fully aware of his injury at the time of the signing, but felt bound by the terms of this hypothetical verbal agreement to sign him anyways.

If Wallin is indeed struggling to fully recover from his foot injury, one would think that this will make the training camp battles at defense more competitive than they would have been. Andreas Lilja's tryout invitation makes more sense when placed into the context of Wallin's injury, and it also gives a little more opportunity to prospects such as Derek Joslin, Mike Moore, and Matt Irwin (among others) to crack the team and get some early playing time at the start of the year while Wallin gets fully healthy-- something that likely wouldn't have occurred considering seven healthy (or so we assumed) NHL defenseman were under contract two weeks ago.

The Swedish defenseman will likely push very hard to rehabilitate before the year begins, especially with the Sharks facing off against the Columbus Blue Jackets in his homeland of Sweden to start the NHL season. It's an opportunity he hasn't had since 2005 when, in the midst of the NHL lockout, he went to play for Lulea in the Swedish Elite League.

Go Sharks.

LTIR for the entire season would free up the cap space, but that’s never going to happen. NHL contracts are guaranteed money & term, unlike the NFL. Only way to free up the cap space is if he’s demoted or put on LTIR for an entire year.

I don’t think voiding the contract is really necessary anyways— Wilson obviously believes Wallin can do the job he’s getting paid to do, and he seems to be fairly confident (according to Twitter’s 140 character limit) that he’ll be good to go at the beginning of the season. Whether or not that’s typical Doug Wilson-speak, I couldn’t tell you. Hard to really understand what that guy is saying when he says something.

If it’s still a concern now, four months later, I doubt Wallin will be 100%. He may play in Sweden, just for the hell of it, but I say, put him on LTIR right after they get back and give him a month or two to fully heal.

Last thing we want is last year’s playoffs Wallin eating up millions of salary cap space while playing below Leach ability.

This is bad

Skating on a crummy foot will only hurt us. Don’t play until your foot is completely healed!

This is not my favorite news ever. I don’t tend to consider Wallin to be an irreplaceable part of the team, but I figured he’d be a working part. Hopefully some time on the LTIR will help. Preferably sooner than later.

I think it's great!

Clears up that stupid $2.5M in salary cap for the first couple months. Let’s bank that for later in the year or a deadline pickup.

Plank, I think your speculation on Wallin getting the deal based on a promise by Wilson makes a lot of sense. If that’s the case, pretty stand-up job by the Sharks, especially when we have obvious contrast with Belanger and the Caps. Good take, Plank.

Unfortunately LTIR doesn’t work like that. Even if he starts the year on LTIR he’ll count against the cap.

Only situation where this benefits the Sharks on a cap level is if Wallin gets put on LTIR all year (which won’t happen).

How does this equate to the Sami Salo situation in Vancouver? Seems I’ve seen some people talking about how Salo’s injury (and how he’ll start the season on LTIR) is beneficial to that team in terms of their tenuous salary cap situation.

by Timorous Me on Sep 18, 2010 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Salo starting the seaon on the LTIR allows the Canucks to temporarily go over the salary cap while he is injured— once he returns however, they will need to become cap compliant, and all of the salary he’s accrued over that time will count against them.

This is a good time for me to do a post on this— I’ve noticed LTIR has gotten a lot of questions in the comments over the last couple years, and you’re definitely not the first to be confused about it (I was part of that group as well). A good refresher could serve us all well.

Look for it either tonight or tomorrow morning.

It’s an easy thing to confuse, took me forever to figure out how it works exactly.

I must have posted 15 to 20 times about it over the course of the summer, especially in regards to Salo and the Canucks.

Thanks for clarifying—I remember getting this straight at some point last season, but like a bad student seem to not have retained all that information over the summer. It’s like being back in my math classes in high school.

This really doesn’t bode well at all. If his foot was going to get back to 100%, I have a feeling it would’ve happened by now. I’m with you, Plank.

it's bad for wallin

but are you really worried about it for the Sharks? doesn’t seem that bad if they can carry some extra people on the roster filling his $2.5M while he is on LTIR. can carry leach and lilja with that salary, and try out one of the rookies as well.

by jhu12 on Sep 18, 2010 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Not sure about Lilja

Unless he accepts the league minimum, that’s an awful lot of money to be carrying throughout the season and would require a lot of creative roster management with regards to the cap. Which is what we were doing with the Worcester Shuttle. It’s one thing to do that with AHL guys. Lilja is a veteran with whom we probably couldn’t do that.

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn

by ElvisVF101 on Sep 18, 2010 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

You know, I’ve been thinking about Lilja and if he can return to his form of two season ago, it seems like he really could be a more useful part than Wallin. I’m especially encouraged by his PK numbers; it seems to me he could bring more to the table, in terms of being a regular PK workhorse, than Wallin. This would be huge in terms of giving a little more of a breather to our other (overworked) defensemen.

I’m going to assume that if Lilja looks all right, he’ll happily take $500k or so for the season and Leach could start the year in Worcester. And if Lilja starts the season in the lineup instead of Wallin because of this injury, McLellan might well get used to relying on Lilja instead of Wallin. If this is benefiting the team, I’m all for it…but that Wallin contract could end up being even more absurd than we’ve yet imagined if he misses time due to injury and then, when returning, finds himself as the 7th defenseman.

I watched the interview with him on sjsharks.com… and much like the sucker I am for most hockey players, I’ve warmed up to him considerably and wouldn’t mind him making the team at all.

its blasphemy

but I heard Bobby Ryan’s interview on XM after he signed his contract and he totally sounded like a cool guy. Its a rare hockey player that you can really hate when they aren’t in their colors.

Can you get signatures at training camp?

by pooponastick on Sep 18, 2010 9:14 PM PDT reply actions

This story on sjsharks.com explains the procedure for attending training camp:

6. For your own safety, guests MAY NOT stand in moving traffic aisles of Sharks Ice seeking autographs. Everyone MUST remain within the designated area outlined by Sharks Ice Management.

So, yes. You just have to be in the designated area and hope the players come to you.

Either that or just hang out in the parking lot after practice. Everyone is usually pretty cool about taking pictures or signing things for you.

I think that’s the one that only applies to the South Rink, or that’s how I read it when reading the rules.

go to a practice later in the year… there are only a few people at those and the guys will sign whatever, whenever.

Hmm...

if the Sharks signed an extension feeling like they had to, even in spite of knowing about the injury, did they have to sign the extension for so damn much!?
