Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Odds and ends from the first two days of training camp

The Sharks have been at training camp for all of two days now, and David Pollak of Working The Corners has been doing a bang up job of covering the practice sessions.

Tonight I'd like to select a few bits and pieces from his articles and give some thoughts on them. I'm culling this information from these two pieces, and I fully suggest you read them all in full before continuing on-- there's a load of good information here, and Pollak has got that prodigious prose all of the ladies love.

McLellan has said he is sticking with the foundation of puck-possession, fire-away-from-the-blueline hockey that he brought with him three years ago, though tweaks certainly occur each season...

...As for the tweaks, "there’ll be evolution in our game. It’s  just not going to happen in day one, two or three," McLellan said. "It’s going to happen once our group gets together a little bit more and we have a familiar set of faces on a daily basis."

I think you're going to see a lot of tweaks throughout the year in respect to this gameplan, unless the Sharks go out and bring in an offensive defenseman via trade. The loss of Rob Blake to retirement means the loss of the team's biggest shot from the point, which is definitely going to hurt the offensive production from the backend-- Blake had seven goals last year, second on the defense behind only Dan Boyle (who had 15).

The purpose of "firing away from the blueline" is threefold-- first, to immediately score goals. That much is obvious. The second is to draw forwards up to cover the point, which opens up some space in front of the net for the forwards to work with. The third is to generate rebounds off low and hard shots which the forwards can subsequently cash in on.

Right now the Sharks have two legitimate offensive defenseman-- Dan Boyle and Jason Demers. Neither have what I would classify as a "bomb" from the backend, but they're definitely well-versed on putting the puck on net. Niclas Wallin, Douglas Murray, Jay Leach, Andreas Lilja (contingent upon him making the team) and Kent Huskins aren't going to scare anybody when they tee one up, and although Marc-Edouard Vlasic has always had the promise of offensive ability running through his veins, it remains to be seen if he will ever truly wrangle that.

Essentially, I think you're going to see the Sharks begin to work the puck down a lot more as the year goes on-- if I'm opposing teams coaching staff, I try to keep the puck off the stick of the likes of Thornton/Pavelski/Marleau for as much possible. Challenging the point less aggressively and focusing on blocking shots (forcing the below average shooters that populate the San Jose blueline to try and jam the puck through traffic) is the route I definitely would take.

Star-divide

The practice was fairly uptempo and had a bit of intensity to it at times. At one point, for example, goalie prospect Alex Stalock used his stick to whack Jason Demers on the ankle when the defenseman crowded him in the crease.

Thank god it wasn't Niclas Wallin crowding Stalock's crease eh?

Anyways, funny stuff, and a perfect opportunity to plug our interview with Stalock last season as well as throw down some Paul Simon:

The two favored candidates for the captaincy (at least favored by those of us NOT involved in the decision) had similar reactions when asked about the fact this is the second consecutive season that a new captain will be chosen, and that their names were getting a lot of attention.

Frankly, don't care about this but it's relevant to our discussion here. As I've stated for a long while now, I believe the Captaincy is strictly a locker room issue, and a facet of the team that we (as fans) don't have a very good handle on. Talking to officials, rallying the troops before a big period, speaking to the media after games-- there are so many responsibilities that extend upon what we see on the ice. Pretending like we can extrapolate the data available to us (goals scored, interviews) and make a decision as to what's right for the team doesn't make much sense to me.

So yeah. There ya go.

And I think it will be Boyle.

And here’s the rundown on goaltending, if I’m reading a slightly confusing stat sheet correctly. Antti Niemi started the game for Team B and stopped 14 of 16 shots; he was succeeded in nets by Thomas Griess, who gave up the game-winner. At the other end of the ice, Harri Sateri started and gave up two goals on seven shots while Antero Niittymaki stopped all 14 shots he faced.

Although I was obviously in opposition to the Niemi signing, I couldn't be more ecstatic for a situation in San Jose where the goaltenders will have to perform in order to earn their minutes (something that Greiss would have provided as well, but I digress). Nabokov's 70+ games between the pipes was a point of contention for me all of last season, especially when one considers how similar his statistics were to his backups during his entire ten year run here.

Evgeni Nabokov vs. Counterparts (00-01 to Present Day)

Year
GP
Win % SA
GA
SV GAA SV%
Evgeni Nabokov
537 53.29 14,149 1235 12,914 2.37 91.2
Counterparts
232
52.86 5627
502 5125 2.43 91.0

The loss of a .922 SV% last season is most definitely going to hurt (something I plan on covering later this week), but it's very nice to know there will be equal opportunity for McLellan to be able to ride the hot hand-- Nabokov dictated his starts during his most recent history here, something that the Sharks won't have to be concerned about going forward.

*****

That's a wrap for tonight. I must say, the fact that hockey is just around the corner has me doing naked cartwheels in public places all over town. Wave if you see me!

Go Sharks.

Great Post

Thanks for keeping us in the loop regarding training camp. I sure hope we can find another offensive defenseman or Vlasic can step his game up because I love the flow and style of offense set up from the point. Blue-liners are the equivalent of quarterbacks and i love how easy it is to set up plays from the point and then boom a shot into traffic. I think transitioning to a down-low game could hurt our team considering that none of our players are particularly good at taking the body down low (Clowe is inconsistent and Thornton is more of a behind the net guy than a sideboards guy). I don’t know how well many of our snipers could transition to that kind of offense

Thanks Plank

I was there but with all that was going on and shuffling it was hard to keep track of everyone all the time :) The rooks were definitely the most exciting to watch. Just their passion and the rawness of their game, though not always pretty, was the best. At scrimmage today, I wouldn’t have been surprised if any of the rooks decided to scrap with each other. They were crashing into the boards and each other like there was not another chance to ever play hockey again. Highlight of the day Thornton crashing the net and just bowling over the goalie (i forget who was playing that side) but I’m sure goalie man peed himself. OH and Huskins got a wee bit of a scratch on the cheek he was down for a bit but OOOKAY.

In regards to blueline points

It’s nice to drag the forwards up top and keep them honest and not just floating at the red line for the home run pass. But more importantly, you would hope it opens up room for the low cycle to start working as well. If you can drag the defensive wingers up top and the centerman low, you would hope that our offensive third man high will be open for the kind of goals that made Jonathan Cheechoo a 50 goal scorer in his magic run here. Last season, teams were pretty much able to collapse below the dots and everything jammed up.

The Sharks were often been guilty of not skating the whole shift last season. I found that to be the most infuriating thing. Well, maybe the second most after the GORRAM TURNOVERS!

I would hoping making the D have to work harder to stay with their assignments will help more of the bounces go our way. Fact of the matter is, I don’t feel the team worked hard enough for enough of the season last year to make the bounces go our way. They DID have their act together against Colorado and Detroit, but against Chicago, I don’t think so.

I always do feel the bombing away from the blue line is a mixed bag. It does do all the strategic things of bringing defensive wingers high and opening up ice, but if the blueliners aren’t moving their skates to open up new shooting lanes, the puck will just hit someone and be turned over. It brings us to a lot of those weird stat lines from Chicago, and Anaheim two seasons ago, where we dominate the shot clock, but have nothing to show for it. The team that can transition always seems to get the goals.

Bottom line, we can bring in lots of new offensive schemes, but when this team struggles, it’s not a question of tactics, it’s a question of will, in my humble opinion. I know people hate the “want” argument, but I hold firm to it. The Sharks give up goals when they take their foot off the gas and don’t match the intensity of their opposition.

I agree about the stuff about “wanting it” – I think it also matches with confidence. When they want it and go out thinking they can have it, they play like they’re gonna get it.

Not sure I can comment on the other stuff… ;)

Woh

Did anyone catch the crosscheck to the face Heatley delivered to Couture in todays scrimmage and subsequent scuffle between McGinn and Heatley. I just loved Couture’s face after getting the butt of the stick to the chops… he kind of looked at Heatley like “why would you do that?”

by SharksFanTillDeath on Sep 20, 2010 11:46 AM PDT reply actions

Missed the crosscheck but saw the scuffle. The Couture-McGinn-Mitchell line was tearing up the team white’s top line. That line scored two of team teal’s goals. They were flying. By far the best line of the day on either side.

Nitty is still perfect. Stalock looked real solid especially during the end of the game when white was pushing. I was surprised how small he is though.

This is totally random but i just realized that maybe Turco isn’t such a bad fit for the Blackhawks. Just thinking about his puck handling/passing ability with a great transition team like the Blackhawks is kind of scary.

by Khaaz on Sep 20, 2010 2:09 PM PDT reply actions

But then think of the Turco of the past two years. You know, the Turco that was just barely better than Toskala, the Turco whose five hole was bigger than Nabby’s. That’s the Turco they’re getting, and I’m quite alright with that.

Yeah i’m not worried about Turco making monster saves or anything anymore, but he’s still damn good with the puck and on a good transition team like the Blackhawks that could be a real factor when playing them. I have a feeling they’ll be able to create a lot of breakaways with Turco passing the puck up the ice to Kane.

So, a winning record and crappy SVG and GAA. Something like that.

by ievans on Sep 20, 2010 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions

You can only pass the puck up the ice if it’s not in the net.

I’m sure he’ll pull off some crazy passes, but his inability to stop the puck over the last couple years isn’t going to magically disappear because he’s on the Blackhawks.

I think ultimately the passing they’ll gain isn’t going to outweigh the goals they’ll give up.

by Auth0r on Sep 20, 2010 7:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Well it’s not like Turco has very big shoes to fill. I’m curious to see how he does, and whether the Hawks can really put his puckhandling/passing ability to good use.

by Khaaz on Sep 20, 2010 11:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Not to mention, the Turco whose five hole problems might only be, uh, enlarged due to the equipment rules changes.

by Timorous Me on Sep 20, 2010 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions

i agree the puck moving is overrated for a goalie, but i think it’s wishful thinking for sharks fans to think/assume the blackhawks will be weak in goal next season. i seem to remember something similar last postseason, with goaltending being their problem. Dallas was terrible the last two seasons, and goalies typically don’t have good stats on losing teams.

In fact, I’ve heard, their “wins” stat in particular tends to suffer the most when playing on a losing team. This is a brand new deduction behindthenet has just come up with using the most advanced numbers and formulas, so don’t go spreading it around just yet. It could be false.

Unless age has really caught up to Turco, he’s always been comparable to Nabokov, and when Dallas had a team of similar ability to the Sharks, he played just as well, if not better than, Nabokov, both in head to head meetings, and over the course of the season. He’s a good goalie with a much better track record than Niittymaki, and you all seemed very high on Niittymaki after coming to terms with him being your starter. I’m sure if the Sharks had signed Turco instead for 1.3 million, everyone here would be talking about how we got the best available free agent goalie for one of the cheapest prices. Most Sharks fans didn’t want Niemi on our team instead of a good defenseman, but now that a few weeks have rolled by since, I’m starting to hear that old ‘someone said this… I’m not quite sure who… but i’m really starting to agree… what he said was, well, I really liked our goaltending yesterday, with Niittymaki, but I like it even better today, with Niemi. I don’t remember who asid that, but I’m starting to feel the same way. we have lots of pieces that other teams like. there’s plenty of time before the trade deadline. he’s a cup winner, after all. the first cup winner in goal we’ve had in awhile. plus, he’s a rat. and not just any rat. you think North American rats have it tough? you think they gotta fight the whole way to get to where they wanna go? you should see the living conditions for rats in finland. you don’t wanna know. it’s ugly. i’ve heard stories, rumors, of how some of them have had to drive little rat zambonis around the ice after their daily rat work just to make ends meet. could u do that? could u drive a little rat zomboni around after work? i doubt it. the gas pedal is so small, you’d have to become a rat yourself just to operate it. if you’ve gotta chance to add a finish rat like that, who fits into our salary structure, you’ve gotta make it happen. unless a siberian rat becomes available for a similar salary, in which case obviously you’d go with him, unless there’s a siberian rat, you gotta make it happen. and ohhhh, you believe me now here son, i checked with Tim Burke right before this interview, and I’ll check again right after—there aint none of them siberian rats. Believe me, I’ve tried taking our north american rats on trips to siberia, leaving them in the sewers for a few days, sometimes even the whole summer like I did with Marcel Goc, but it’s never the same as getting one who’s grown up there, had to struggle through all that sick siberian shit. The guys who you leave there for a few days, maybe they’re a little mentally tougher, maybe they’re ready to make it to the second round this time, but when you leave them there for too long, something goes wrong inside that little head of theirs, they get rabid, sick and twisted. they go to salary arbitration instead of campaigning gary bettman to lower the minimum league salary so that I lowball them further. they start trying to score goals on the third line instead of playing what we like to call sharks hockey. they don’t say ich loven di back anymore when you say it first. you try saying hey now, that’s a bad little goc! BAD! And they don’t listen no more. Instead of being your one european scout, in germany, over the summer, they go rammstein concerts. you can’t teach someone to be a true siberian rat anymore than you can teach a true rat how to speak siberian. you just cant. you wanna know what I think? fuck goc. fuck rammstein. and fuck russia, und kovelchooken, und oveechkineenen. they’re all the same, like mice to me, and my rats squash them. these russian mice are so stupid, you put them on your third line, and they still try to score goals on the other teams net! was di fuckenzite ist das shizenfroogen? my finish rat squash all of these micearoaches.’

it wasn’t too long ago that sharks fans didn’t want the finish rat, and now they’re saying he’s a good signing after all. i think you see my point. they also unknowingly get what they perceive to be their own opinions straight from doug wilson’s mouth, because they are stupid and do not know any better.

so, in summation, let’s wait and see before designating turco as a weakness on the hawks, and let’s please designate the Niemi signing as a bad one right away. Yes, I am pointing out my own contradiction here, except nope sorry I’m not. We have to wait and see with Turco because whether he is a weakness for the Hawks can only be determined by his play. However, with Niemi, we’re not talking about whether he’s a weakness or not. We’re ttalking about whether he’s a good signing or not. And the criteria for that is he was a waste of cap space, and we only had a limited amount, therefore regardless really of how he plays, unless it’s absolutely spectacular, we can designate his signing as a poor one now. I hope you understand the difference. i will be back another day with a continuation of my ongoing rat pieces.

Normal people can understand it just fine. You’d think he was Charles Dickens and was getting paid per word. It’s just retarded run on bullshit that repeats over and over and over again. You can really take in everything he’s trying to say in the first two sentences and save yourself the boredom of him coming up with retarded analogies or examples that do very little to prove his point. Kinda OT...

any season ticket holders who can’t go to Teal and White tomorrow night willing to pass a ticket my way? I really wanna go, but don’t want to risk just showing up and getting stuck at the door. IIRC some people said the ticket allows for a guest to come along, so just the one ticket would be cool. Please please please. ANYONE who isn’t going, but has an invite, please consider donating it to me :) PLEASE and THANK YOU.

Sharks signed Sgarbossa today to three year entry level 2 way deal.

by Buttercrunch7 on Sep 20, 2010 5:37 PM PDT reply actions

This isn’t helping my cause for firing Doug Wilson. No idea how everyone else passed on him. He’s an awesome 2nd round pick at worse and no one drafted him. I’d say it’s brilliance on DW’s part, but he passed on him too. Someone else could easily have scooped him up in the 7th, so it’s more like incompetency on everyone else’s part. That being said, it’s a great move for the team. Everyone should be happy. It’ll be another matter completely if they let him play on the team in the coming years, but I suspect they will. I’m sure he’ll explode wherever he plays this season and then onto the Sharks next year if he doesn’t make it this year. He’s very light right now so he needs to add some weight.

by Buttercrunch7 on Sep 20, 2010 5:39 PM PDT reply actions

He’s an awesome 2nd round pick

And don’t you love how we get this “second round pick” without even using that second round pick… Wilson has an eye for talent, maybe not finesse talent, like Etem, but I’m willing to bet that Coyle will turn out to be just fine for what the Sharks need.

by kiwi93 on Sep 20, 2010 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I do love it. I’m just saying, if I was LA’s GM, or Anaheim’s GM, or Dallas’s GM, and I used my 7th round pick on him, Doug Wilson wouldn’t have gotten him. There’s probably a Sgarbossa every year. Imagine all the Sgarbossa’s we missed out on because Doug WIlson does not have an eye for talent. Obviously he wasn’t sure enough about Sgarbossa to draft him. He had to invite him to camp first. I pegged him as the Sharks best prospect playing in the 2nd prospects game after two minutes of watching him on a blurry TV screen, before he ever scored one goal. It took Doug Wilson all season plus a hat trick, including a highlight reel goal, in the 2nd of two prospect games to decide he was worth adding to our prospect pool.

So I’ll agree, it all turned out for the best, except for Doug Wilson having to pay him immediately, which, if I’m not mistaken, is not something he would have had to do if he’d drafted him. But a lot of it was chance. Chance that no one scooped him up in the 2nd round, or the 7th round. Chance that no one else invited him to their camp afterwards. Chance that he scored a hat trick and a highlight reel goal in the 2nd prospect game. It’s easy to credit Doug Wilson because 29 other GM’s were idiots, but if we’re going to grade him on a curve like that, you also have to acknowledge that Doug Wilson was himself an idiot compared to me. Like I said, I identified the talent right away, whereas it took a year and a hat trick on his rookie team for Doug Wilson to identify him. If Doug Wilson is failing to identify talent like this early enough, and taking huge risks in losing talent like this, then how many do you wager he’s lost out on in the past because of his flaws?

I think your statement really says it all, when you say “he has an eye for talent, maybe not finesse talent.” I understand what you’re saying, but that’s about as close as you can get to a contradiction while still making sense. What you mean is he’s good at drafting two way players, with size, but not finesse players. That’s fine and logical on its own terms, but me, personally, size is not talent, or skill. Two-way play, unless it’s because of a great poke check, or because of great skating ability, is not really a skill in most cases. It’s more smarts, effort, size, etc. Skill, or talent, is skating, speed, passing, stickhandling, shooting, etc. And those are all in the finesse category. So I think you’re right: he doesn’t have an eye for finesse. Therefore, he doesn’t have an eye for talent. In last year’s playoffs, right off the bat against Colorado in the playoffs, they were pegged as the fast, skill team, who would benefit from and up and down tempo, and we were identified as the big, grinding team. Same against Chicago and Detroit. And Colorado, this is a team spending like 15 mil less on players than us, who are faster and more skilled. I think that tells you all you need to know about Doug Wilson’s eye for talent. We survive on our size and puck protection along the boards, with just enough skill from guys like Heatley, Marleau, Boyle, etc. But the most skilled guy Doug Wilson has actually drafted on our team is probably Setoguchi, and he’s not an elite level skill player.

I've gotta know...

Do you really think that DW does all the talent scouting for our team himself?

by Auth0r on Sep 20, 2010 10:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m not excluding Burke and the other scouts. They’re at fault too. But you have to believe someone brought tape of Sgarbossa to Doug Wilson over the season. Sure it’s possible no one mentioned Sgarbossa to DW until after the draft. Possible, but unlikely. If that’s the truth though, then that’s a whole different problem, less to do with evaluating talent and more to do with lack of effort, not taking a look at all the good prospects until after the draft when they could have been scooped up.

Or the other option is like so many guys that go undrafted

we didn’t miss Pavelski or Demers.

by Buttercrunch7 on Sep 20, 2010 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Those are guys we got. I’m saying who have we missed? I don’t know how anyone missed Demers. Before he made the team I also designated him as the guy who was the best of our prospect D last preseason. However, i didn’t think they’d actually pick him, because Doug Wilson never agrees with my talent evaluation, and Demers’ strengths were skill (for a defenseman) and offense and finesse, but he was small and a bit of a liability defensively, so I thought no way they’re just going to go the safe boring route as always. But they made the right decision. But yes Pavelski and Demers were obviously good picks. Demers is a defenseman though, and Pavelski, besides his shot, is not really a finesse player. You have to look at the team as a whole, and Doug Wilson’s drafting as a whole, not just the anomalies. The team is the biggest in the league I believe. If they were also the most finesse skilled team, we would be a dynasty. I’m talking, if the Sharks were all 6’4 Patrick Kanes… Patrick Kane is skilled, and small. Instead of Kane, Toews, Versteeg, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Hudler, the Sedins, Raymond, Semin, Backstrom, etc etc, we have Heatley, Clowe, Marleau, Thornton, Pavelski, Setoguchi, etc. We’re a different type of team. It’s just my opinion and obviously I know very little about these matters, but I’ve always been of the opinion that if you traded for say, an Ales Hemsky, or signed any really small but very skilled player, and put him on a line with Joe Thornton and whoever, then you’d have a much better recipe for success. I don’t really want to say too much more because the Sharks management don’t deserve my wisdom but it’s food for thought for you guys.

Wow, wonder how he got to that game so that you could turn your highly trained and informed eyes on him. Might it be that the organization took a look, gave him some shots, and watched him rise to the occasion?

No, couldn’t possibly be. Doug Wilson is a moron and can’t ever make a good decision because that would cause the universe to implode.
