Now, that Niemi has been signed, who might be traded, and who do you want to keep?
I'd say now that Niemi has been signed, the starts will be split maybe 50/50 or 60/40, etc between Niittymaki and Niemi. Greiss is likely going to be traded along with another player for a big name defenseman who is somewhat young and speedy like Vlasic or Demers, and is playoff proven if possible. I don't think Greiss alone is enough to satisfy another team to want to give up a good D-man. Of all the skaters on our roster, these are who I'd say we should keep to keep our shot at the Cup strong.
Thornton, Marleau, Heatley, Clowe, Pavelski, Setoguchi, Couture, Nichol, Boyle, Murray, Vlasic, Demers.
I say use anyone from Huskins, Mitchell, McGinn, Wallin paired up with Greiss in the package to land a good D-man.
Who do you guys say we should keep and who should be offered in a trade?

I like the optimism but...
Its going to take Clowe or Murray or DW pulling a rabbit out of a hat.
DW seems to be an expert at pulling a rabbit out of a hat when it comes to trades
Thornton, Heatley, Boyle…

Clowe/Greiss for Ian White at trade deadline. Ian white is a UFA at the end of the season. There’s actually quite a few top D-Men that will be UFAs after the ShaRks raise the cup this year. biggest problem being able to keep one if we trade for one.

Meant Clowe+Greiss not either or like the / implied….

I really like Ian White but man that is some serious overpayment. Huskins + a 1st is more like it imo. Good idea about trading for Ian White though.
Calgary is almost assuredly going to suck next season and with his 1 year contract he should be very expendable. As should Regehr, who’s another good option.
Just Keep McGinn
I loved the fire of fore-checks that guy showed in the playoffs… dude has quick skates, young and seems to play in my opinion…sharks hockey

All this Clowe trade talk!
What does he have to do to convince people he’s a stud!
1-Great fore-check
2-can score 40-60 points per when healthy
3-hands down one of the most dangerous fighters in the league!
4-helped us squeek by the av’s in more than one game!
stop hating and be glad we have him in our line up!
I'm with you
Keep Clowe!

i like clowe
but he could very well become a third line guy—if we’re gonna try and get our young guys some experience. and money-wise we’re stacked offensively, we need some D support
I would disagree with you here. At least for the forseable future our style of play is to dump the puck low and use our size and strength to cycle and get sustaining pressure in the corners to wear out the teams d, then use that weardown to get the puck off the boards and get scoring chances. Clowe is easily the best keeping the puck down low on the team after Thornton. Although, one could argue better than Thornton as he doesn’t draw the defensive attention that Thornton does, so it results it can often result in more zone time, that mixed with the grit and willingness to get in front of the net as well. Unlike Erhoff 2 seasons ago who was also locked up, Clowe had a large impact in getting us out of the first round and through the first two games of Detroit (then that line cooled off a bit and the big line took over the rest of that series). Don’t forget he certainly played a part in Pav’s success in the first two rounds by the down low work he did. Yes our D needs to improve, but I haven’t heard one name in a mention of a trade for Clowe on here i would even think twice about considering giving him up for.

i agree that clowe is important—but given we just re-signed seto and pavs and someone’s gonna have to go to make space for D… i think we forgot that we have an all-star 1st line… and only two solid blue liners right now—thus even with clowe gone we’d still have a very frightening offense. do i want to see clowe gone-no. do i want to have a decent blue line-yes.

We have to keep Clowe &
you can’t trade McGinn. I think he’ll score 20 this year! Perhaps 25 if he’s on the same line with Couture.
I’d trade Seto because I don’t like that one year contract
no way Mcginn scores 20 goals.
And seto’s contract is excellent. 1.8 million is a steal and forces him to earn a longer contract next season. No way we trade a 30 goal sniper in just his 4th year.

Thanks for the Memories Nabby.
20 goals does seem a bit high since he's a 3rd liner, but its not out of the question.
Especially if we lose a guy or two to injury.

Your crazy
Seto at 1.8 is a STEAL. He is also still a RFA after the season is over. This is a good contract for the Sharks
Yeah, that’s incredibly excellent. Now I love Seto. (:

TBH it’s not all that excellent considering that we didn’t even take good advantage of the extra cap space that his deal afforded us.
It also woulda been nice to try and take advantage of his relatively poor season this year by signing him to a 3.2 – 3.5 million dollar contract for the next 3 or 4 years. If Seto plays as expected this season (30-40 goals), he’ll probably be looking for a 4 or 5 million dollar contract next year. Though if Seto turns into a 40 goal scorer this season i won’t give a shit what he’s asking for lol; worst case scenario we’d have a 40 goal scoring RFA forward as a trade chip.
TBH it’s not all that excellent considering that we didn’t even take good advantage of the extra cap space that his deal afforded us.
A bit early to be weighing the value of Seto’s contract against what other moves have/haven’t been made this offseason. If Seto had signed a 3-4 year contract for ~3.5 we wouldn’t be talking be talking about shutdown Dmen, we would be talking about 4th line griders (as this would be all that our capspace would allow).
Yeah it’s great that his contract gave us an opportunity to sign a top 4 D-man, but we’ve now blown the opportunity that his contract afforded us. All the top 4 d-men have already been signed and the extra cap space was used to sign Niemi.
Now next season we might have 1 to 2 million less cap space than we would’ve had if we had signed Seto to a 3 to 3.5 million dollar contract for the next few years this season. If Seto scores 30 – 40 goals this season he’s going to cost 4 – 5 million rather than 3 to 3.5 million.
To be fair all the top 4 Dman were already signed before Seto did his contract. His low contract helps us field a deeper team, and allows for some flexibility to works some trades that Seto @ 3.5 doesn’t.
I get your point that the Niemi signing doesn’t help us acquire a Dman from free agency, but is there anyone there that you really want. While our options to make trades for picks and prospects is severly limited now, the Niemi signing does, however, give us some flexibility to make a trade using Greiss as the last chip to push the deal through.
I personally am for the Niemi signing, as it will give us more proven goaltending. I think NItty and Niemi can push each other and battle for the playoff time. This is a good thing in my mind.
On your point that Seto will demand more money if he scores 30 -40 goals: this is of course true, but conversely we could get him for a steal should he only produce 20-25 goals. So call it a calculated gamble.
Well yeah Setos cheap contract really just gave us a better shot at Willie Mitchell, which we blew. So his cheap contract didn’t really help us very much.
Seto just had his 20 – 25 goal season that we could’ve used to sign him to a cheap contract. If he scores 20 – 25 goals again this season while playing on the first or second line then he’ll probably be traded or something.
You are being WAAAYY to optimistic
You say you want a trade to get a young, big name defenseman. It is going to take a lot more than Greiss and the 4 guys on your list to steal away a young, solid defenseman. Like what has been said over and over on this site, Clowe and Murray are the only realistic trade pieces to get a good d-man. Greiss obviously sweetens the deal but not as much everyone seems to think. Trust me, I like the guy. I’ve met him in person more than once and he is a nice and funny dude; it sucks that he’s the odd man out. But he’s still unproven at the NHL level and pretty much every Sharks fan is over-valuing him. I love both Murray and Clowe and it would suck to see either go, but it will probably be Clowe. If Murray is traded, that puts another hole in the blue line (granted, not as large). So ZackAttack, if you want the type of defenseman you’ve mentioned, it’s going to take at least Clowe+Greiss+picks/prospects. No GM in their right mind will give up a young, big-name dman for Greiss and a bottom 6 forward or a bottom pairing defenseman.
