Preseason Quirks
I went to the Sharks preseason game last night against the Nucks. Aside from the wealth of scoring from many sources (Lilja in particular had a great game incuding his goal) against a team that admittedly did not have all of its starters present (the Sedins, Burrows, etc), one thing in particular caught my eye. A certain Kent Huskins was wearing the A for the game. Interpret this as you will...my own 2 cents is simply to repeat what others have said before me: that obviously we as fans are not privy to all that goes on in the clubhouse, including what coaches are looking for when choosing team leaders. I know McClellan likes having Huskins on the team because of his leadership qualities and his Stanley Cup ring.
But seeing the A on number 40 caused a double take.
Is it the regular season yet???
**edit: forgot to mention Marleau wasn't on the bench for this game--another contributing factor

Here's what we know:
1) Huskins is not one of the better players on the Sharks.
a) He’s a third-pair defenseman.
2) He’s not a fan favorite.
a) Most people think he’s overpaid. He’s going to make more money than Devin Setoguchi this year.
b) He’s not especially gritty, fast, or exciting.
c) He doesn’t score goals.
d) He pretty much never talks to the media.
3) For all I know, he must be like Yoda in the locker room, because apparently T-Mac thinks he’s leadership material.

Setoguchi will actually make $1.8M this year, while Huskins makes $1.7M.
Also, Huskins is one of the better skaters on the Sharks’ blueline. And I’d argue that he’s exciting when he does anything really lol. If he skates the puck through the neutral zone the hairs on the back of my neck stand up immediately.
To be honest though, Huskins isn’t so bad. Granted the Sharks paid him more than he’s ever been paid, but I think that was done more in an effort to attract free agents to San Jose since we’ve never been great at that. Either way, his contract and Wallin’s are off the books next season and we get Moore and maybe Joslin to fill out that bottom pairing for cheap and give Setoguchi his raise.
Huskins is making 1.9M this year, he made 1.5M last year. Seto’s cap hit is more, not his salary.
As far as leadership material, I wasn’t aware that “He’s not a fan favorite” in some way disqualifies you. Or what any of the options in 2 has to do with leadership.

I don’t think “d” has anything to do with being captain. I think it has a lot to do with overzealous fans who nit pick every thing a player does off the ice. Marleau is crap in front of cameras, Heatley too. I’m sure they’re useless in leadership. Blake gave shit interviews too for the most part.

Pretty simple
Boyle-C
Thornton-A
Marleau or Pavelski-A
Being the preseason, I think(hope) it doesn’t really mean anything. Of course, I could be wrong, and we may end up seeing Huskins wear the A occasionaly suring the season.
