Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Stars fan with a question for you Sharks fans...

I currently need a bigger boat..., don't kill me <.<;
I don't expect Cheechoo to stick with the Stars, but his tryout brought up a question I should bring to the people who actually know him.  What’s the convention on his Nickname? Cheech? Cheecher? Cheechy? Cheechs? or does it riff of Johnathan? Or does he have a nickname like Bubbles or something?

On a side note, I think Niemi was a good signing for you cats, especially if y'all were determined to get rid of Nabby.  I've always hated facing Nabokov, so I don't know if it's good that y'all cut ties with him.  I can definitely see the allure of going the cheap route, since the last few Stanley Cup champs haven't done it with the big name money goalie.  Lord knows that Nabby and Turco seem to share that stigma of good regular season guys who never got it done in the post season, whether or not it's justified (Marty's 3 SOs in a series loss to Vancouver implies it wasn't his fault totally...).  I'd add Giguerre into that list, but he got it done one year.  Of course, having Niedermayer and Pronger = probable success anyway...

Do y'all feel like Nabby was successful due to your system/quality of defensemen?

I like to call him a disappointment.

that’s just wrong … he was injured and just wasn’t able to be 100% back to what he was … but to say disappointment is just wrong.

+1

He tore his groin, and didn’t have the same core strength when he came back. He needed that to bull his way to the shooting lanes and create openings for his great shot and good hands.

If anything, Cheech’s rise and fall show just how hard it is to be an elite hockey player. Lose a split-second due to injury, and you go from a Richard Trophy winner to a tryout player hoping for a contract.

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t his last memorable thin as a Shark that bad ass goal against Hiller? That was him right? If so remember that.
Thats all I really remember anyways…

I rec’d that shit.

Cheech could always score against the Ducks, even post-groin, and he broke Hiller’s face with a hard shot from the boards.

Haha, maybe at the end...

He still had the best goal scoring season of any Shark ever…that was pretty awesome.

The accepted nickname is "Cheech"

Jeremy Roenick was also fond of calling him Chachi.

If Cheech sticks with you guys, I will go from hating the Stars with a burning passion to being mildly indifferent to them.

Injuries have clearly taken away the leg strength that made Cheechoo so effective. I’m really hoping he sticks with you guys. I’d just hate for that double sports hernia surgery to be the last chapter in what is otherwise a really amazing hockey story.

Gotta have the Cheechoo whistles out! Unless he sticks with the Stars, then I’ll have to boo him on principle.

Sad to see a sniper become a "gritty 4th liner"...

He just doesn’t have the wheels to get to the spots he did five years ago. You’ll see him consistently be a step late to get to rebounds or to open spots on the ice. He can’t move laterally very well on defense, and has a rather frenetic skating style. He LOOKS like he’s going fast, but then you’ll see guys gliding past him.

I actually feel that Cheechoo can get it done on a third line.

While he didn’t put up big last year, I think he can still contribute to a hockey team. Always passionate, always puts in the work, and always at max effort. At a league minimum contract he should be a good play for most any team.

Thanks Elvis and the rest

Yeah, not sure how well he’ll work out… we’ve got a couple of true grit types in Ott and now Burish, along with Peteresen, Barch and Sutherby, so most of our lower line positions should be filled, and not leaving much room for any of our prospects to stick in camp (not that any are projected to make the jump this year). I’ve heard post injury Cheechoo just doesn’t have any wheels at all and sorta meanders on the ice. Dunno, just seems like he would have to greatly impress in the tryout to actually make, and if he shows his Ottawa playing style.. meh.
Overall a win win for us though, not like it’ll cost us anything…For me at least, if he shows up and has worked out trying to get back, I’ll gladly pay him the same thing we’re paying Bustrrom if we can only jettison his (Fabian’s) primadonnakov toukis.

As to y’all’s goaltending situation, there’s similiarities. Excited to see the start of the season, to find out exactly where our teams stand goaltending wise. Gonna be strange a Marty and Mikeless trip to the Sharktank, and no Nabby facing us….

I’ll go ahead and answer that last question, because no one else seems to have addressed it yet.

I think Nabby was successful because he was just that badass. I’m pretty sure not everyone sees it this way, but considering the state of the defense the past few years… he’s actually been sensational. The harp on him will be that he never won a Cup. But behind a better defense, Nabby would’ve been able to win possibly multiple Cups. Put him behind the Chicago defense, for example, and they’re winning every year.

But this all may be biased, because he is my favorite NHL player of all time…

Cutting ties with him though was to be expected. Losing one of the best goalies in the league is definitely a blow, but his cap hit was just too high to be spent on one player. I guess the argument now would be that we’re in cap trouble anyway, but whatever.

pretty much agree with all of that except the favorite player thing(my daughter puts him at #1 though). I kind of feel that Nabby got a raw deal from the circumstances.
-He didnt get the kind of offensive support he deserved in the playoffs many seasons due to injuries or snake bites or whatever.
-A better D would surely have produced better results.
-there were series that we just ran into the team that was on fire and could seem to do no wrong.
In short I dont blame Nabby alone for a lack of a cup. His coaches and teammates have to be given their share of the angst.
At the same time it’s hard to pick a series where you can say Nabby totally stole that one for us and it usually takes some of that to get a cup.

I personally like "Bubbles".

Cheech. (Real)
Chong. (Fake)
JC. (Fake but we should have been all over this one)
Cheechoo-Train. (Real. Real annoying when the train whistles were out)
Rocket. (It only had the staying power for the off-season after he wont that trophy)
<Insert any type of animal who can’t stand on ice>. (Just truth)

Now if he’s in Dallas:
Traitor.
Cheech-BOOOO.
Falling star.
