I agree on the illegality of the slash.

As best I can guess from the video, it looks like Yandle feels like Perry is trying to cross-check him, gets pissed (and knows it’s Perry) so he spins and swings for the fences. Not legal, or even terribly justified, by any means.

I think it’s somewhat ironic that Perry is the one bitching about that kind of play, since he likes to perpetrate that sort of thing (and I don’t feel particularly bad for him because of that), but you’re right that Yandle was way out of line.
