With the Sharks finally managing to come out of their disheartening six game losing streak with wins over St. Louis and Phoenix during this past holiday weekend, the wheels have begun to finally begun to gain some traction in San Jose. The big three of Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, and Dany Heatley are finally scoring. Logan Couture endured a slump to start January, and after being forced to sit out after a knee on knee collision with Colton Orr, now finds himself playing on Thornton's wing to give the top line the scoring production it has lacked all season. Joe Pavelski has returned after missing eight games with a lower body injury, further shoring up the Sharks scoring punch. Antti Niemi has been nothing sort of excellent in January, and looks to be establishing himself as the go-to netminder for the time being for San Jose.

Despite a key injury to Ryane Clowe, and a four-game suspension for Scott Nichol, things have begun to get a little rosier for the Sharks. They're finally winning games again. They added to their forward depth by acquiring Ben Eager and Kyle Wellwood on Tuesday. And you get the feeling that the team is finally understanding just what kind of fight it's going to be to crack the playoff picture this season.

But no matter which way you slice it, tonight's game against Vancouver is a definition.

A definition of details. San Jose has been able to do the majority of the little things correctly over their last two tilts, and as we saw at the tail end of the losing streak, had shown signs of improvement from their disappointing first half of the season. But consistency (or lack thereof) has been a glaring issue for San Jose this season, and it remains to be seen whether or not these types of performances can continue.

A definition of matchups. The Canucks come into tonight's game perched upon the top of the Western Conference, owners of 65 points and one of the deepest lineups in the league. From goaltending to defense to offense, Vancouver is stacked and remains one of the mid-season favorites to win the Stanley Cup. They're a roster loaded with weapons, and as the Sharks 0-2-0 record against Vancouver will indicate, one who has managed to outclass San Jose in many aspects of the game.

A definition of progress. Tonight remains one of the biggest games this season for San Jose. In an 82 game season some games stick out more than others, and playing Vancouver on the road after a dehabilitating losing streak definitely fits the bill. There's no better way to gauge the progress you've made over the course of the year than to play the best, and right now, Detroit and Vancouver are clearly the best teams in the Western Conference.

Added into the layer of intrigue is the two new acquisitions San Jose made this week. Both Ben Eager and Kyle Wellwood have a history with Vancouver-- Eager for being a part of a Blackhawks team that tormented the Canucks during the last two postseasons, and Wellwood for being a part of the organization before he was let go in the offseason and went to the KHL. New blood has a way of shaking up the locker room and increasing competition levels-- all of a sudden there's a guy sitting across from you that was brought in to take away your job, or at the very least, take away some of your minutes.

There's no doubt tonight is an important game for San Jose. Both in the sense of standings points allocation, which San Jose is hurting for right now, as well as potential playoff matchups. With Vancouver at the top of the Conference, and the Sharks looking at a low seed barring a sizeable reversal of fortune, this has the potential of being a game where statements are sent and matchups get made. It's getting more and more likely the Sharks will have to go on the road to start the postseason (if they even crack the top eight), and more and more likely that the Canucks will be a team they will have to face in order to reach their goals.

As Ric Flair once said, "You have to beat the best in order to be the best."

More importantly, you have to remember not to beat yourself along the way.

Prediction: Sharks win 3-2 in overtime. Goals by McGinn, Heatley, and Pavelski. Fear The Fin sells its soul to give away a free Sharks jersey, and Kyle Wellwood gets moo'd despite clocking in at under 180 pounds.

Memo to Brian Burke

Dear Brian,

Since your team (The Maple Leafs) got tooled last night 7 – 0 by the NY Rangers and because you’re team is 12 points out of the 8th playoff spot in the East with 37 games left in the season, it’s time for you to start thinking trades. You are going to be a seller for the 6th consecutive season and I for one would like you to deal either Francois Beauchemin or Tomas Kaberle to the SJ Sharks.

Although we’re struggling to make the playoffs this year, we stand a much better chance of getting in than do you. So please drop your demands of wanting a first rounder for your tradeable parts and let’s get down to business.

Sincerely,
San Jose Sharks Fan.

P.S.

We don’t want Mike Komsarek and that crazy contract you singed him to ($18,500,000).

Not to beat a dead horse (okay, I will, just one more time) but did anyone see that slash Colton (I’m a goon) Orr laid on Eminger last night? Now that’s a guy we need on our team, right Logan? Just joking, if he gets moved to SJ out of Toronto, then yes, the end of days in nearer than we think.

Depends on how much Detroit offers, right?

If they offer a crapton (heard that word here, love it—been waiting to use it) of money no one else may have that kind of cap room to throw around.

I don’t know Islanders cap room, but it all depends on what Detroit offers, right? To claim someone off waivers you have to match the initial offer, right? Or am I totally off?

Isle's have tons of cap room

They have about $19 million in cap room. Hey, can we borrow some cap room for the Sharks? Come on, we’ll pay them back. However, I don’t think Detroit has any cap room. Nabby to the Wings would be very interesting, especially if we got to beat him in the playoffs on a soft goal or two. :0)

by douchebags on Jan 20, 2011 9:51 AM PST up reply actions

This is pretty much right.

The Wings might get around that by loading it with incentives which won’t ding them this year, but will hit next and might bother another team. Alternately, they might give him a longer term that another team might not want to commit to.

But I’ll believe he’ll make it there only once it happens. There are enough teams that think they might still be in contention that need goaltending to make it interesting.

I really do doubt that he gets claimed should Detroit sign him. Nabby is a “known playoff choker” (I know, I KNOW). And who else would really want him of the contenders, anyways? Most contenders are contenders because they have their goaltending figured out by now…

Maybe is Colorado decides Anderson is beyond repair (unlikely). Chicago might just to block Detroit…and as a sign that the Turco experiment is done, but they probably don’t have the Cap space…and Campbell has been good. Honestly, the only “contender” who could benefit from Nabby would probably be us…but we can’t afford him, already had a chance at him this offseason, etc. Yeah, not happening.

I suspect he’ll be a Wing.

That “known playoff choker” thing must be pissed Wings fan off. So that makes me feel quite happy.

But I feel like a “future” contended (ie, Islanders) will end up snatching him away. Their season may be beyond repair, but a good end would be nice. Plus he won’t be a Wing, so we can hope right?

How pissed must Detroit fans be?

All I remember is how much crap they gave him for being a mediocre goalie in the playoffs haha.

Also, I thought I remembered reading an article in which his agent said he wasn’t planning on returning this season. If he is though, it’s not going to be as a Red Wing. Hell, we picked Kyle Wellwood off of waivers. Kyle freakin’ Wellwood! Nabby will probably end up in NY anyway.

I honestly don’t care. He’s my favorite player, so if he goes to Detroit, that’s a-okay.

Wing fan here

I can’t speak for all Wing fans, but I can tell you that a lot of us are still in a state of disbelief about the whole thing. IF Nabokov is signed by the Wings and clears waivers, he’ll be the back up, not the starter, because Jimmy Howard is back tonight. The thinking is that Chris Osgood’s groin injury is worse than initially expected, and he may be done for the year. There’s also speculation that Osgood will be back in time for the playoffs, at which point Nabokov will be re-waived (this is purely a guess by some fans, nothing official).

With regards to his effectiveness, I’ll be the first to admit that his reputation as a less-than-stellar playoff performer causes me to pause. Again, however, he’s being signed as a backup, so unless there’s an injury to Howard, he likely won’t see the ice during the playoffs. I can tell you that should he end up with the Wings, most fans won’t declare him “the greatest thing in the world who’ll finally meet his potential” just because he’s on the Wings. Personally, I’ve always thought Nabby was in the top-half of goalies in the NHL, but his playoff issues kept him from joining the “elite” status. I think that on a team like the Wings, he does have the potential to do as well as he did on the Sharks the last few years, which would be awesome if he’s the backup as expected.

Good luck tonight against the Canucks; I know that we Wing fans are all pulling for you to keep the Nucks closer to the pack in the West.

by Amerinadian on Jan 20, 2011 10:58 AM PST up reply actions

I saw that response

by browsing the comments at WiiM. Thanks for posting this directly over here. Will be interesting to see how the whole thing plays out. I do think, however, that some other team will end up claiming him. But should he clear waivers, he’s already played alongside Datsyuk in the Olympics. So it’s not like he’d be going in friendless.

If you mention doing yourself in, I will take you seriously!

I’m sure Nabby is being brought in as a backup…although, for the Wings’ sake, I hope they actually give him a fair amount of starts. Nabby will probably be rusty at first, but he’s been a great goaltender in his career. I can’t see Howard, and definitely not Osgood, as a better option than Nabby, should Nabokov actually get back to playing like he can.

Granted, I haven’t watched Howard as much as you have…but I’ve never thought very highly of him when I have watched him. I just never have seen him as anything more than a league average goalie…at best. The stats, at least this season (I know he had good stats last year in the regular season), seem to back me up (Antti Niemi has better season stats than Howard, just for reference). Going into last year’s playoff series with yall, he was the one reason I thought we were going to win…and, in the end, he wasn’t all that impressive…at least to me.

If I was a Wings fan, I’d be pretty happy about the signing (should it happen, and he clears waivers). Goaltending depth is never a bad thing, and Nabokov has at least shown in his career the ability and potential to be an elite goaltender. That he never won a Cup here are as much about this team’s failures as it is about his own. Behind Detroit’s pretty awesome blueline, he could be a difference maker down the stretch.

Nabby plays best when he plays regularly. I don’t know if he’s the best guy to get a start every 10 days or pop off the bench mid-game.

But for sure, he’s never had a defenseman as good as Lidstrom in front of him, ever.

You're certainly best served for the future with Howard

He’s got nothing but upside, and you want him manning your crease for the next decade.

I don’t know how well Nabby will serve as a “mentor” or fill the role that Osgood has since Howard assumed the starter’s mantle. Say whatever you want about Osgood, the guy’s a pro and a team player.

Nabby will certainly give you serviceable NHL goaltending at the least. And given the team in front of him, that might be all you need for whatever number of games you decide to play him.

Nabby is a competitor, and wants to play every day because he believes he’s the best goaltender in the world. He may actually be a bad option if he still has that mindset.

But, he had, as he described, the worst game of his career against Canada, and a serious professional setback in Russia. His mindset might be changed, and it may make him a better teammate.

Frankly, his playoff inabilities are overrated

He may not be a goalie who can win it by himself, but there are very few (if any) goalies in this league that can. Detroit has been blessed with decent goalies, and a brilliant team in front. Nabokov is better than Osgood, IMO, all accolades aside.

Totally agree. Nabby has been pretty decent in his career in the playoffs. That label is unfair without a doubt, but people love to pick on the Sharks. In fact, a couple of playoff years in the early of the Sharks choking, Nabby was the reason they got out of the 1st Rd. He was also the reason they almost came back on Dallas a few years ago.

He is a solid goalie, but I think DW is right, that matters less and less in the ‘new’ NHL.

Detroit offers Nabby $2M-$2.5M.

We snag him on waivers. Then we trade Niemi to them for draft picks.

Niemi gets rewarded for good play by going to a contender that potentially has an opening next season (assuming Osgood retires) and we get Nabby.

I call it a win.

I think he does want to play for the Sharks. He never wanted to leave, but it was a money issue. Technically he earned a raise, but DW couldn’t afford that much. A Nabby/Nitty tandem could work, even a Nabby/Nemo tandem. I do, however, think that Det. won’t get him, as too many other teams will get the chance to snag him off of waivers. Most likely a one year contract. Then he can try to convince DW to hire him next season.

The way things are, with Nitty on a 2 year and Nemo on a 1 year contract, and the way that it seems like Nemo is being pushed as the #1, Nemo would have to be re-signed, Nabby would have to be signed, and Nitty most likely would be the one to go (Greiss-style?).
Can’t wait to see how this sign-waiver thing plays out for now.

If you mention doing yourself in, I will take you seriously!

That's the question

I wonder now if he feels that his move to the KHL was a huge mistake? I wonder if his agent overvalued his worth? I wonder if he had been willing to stay for less, perhaps $3 million per, if he still wouldn’t be a Shark? I for one have moved on, but do wish him all the best.

On the topic of having to play Vancouver tonight...

Well, it’s a huge test. I’m mostly interested in seeing how the new players look. I am cautiously optimistic about Wellwood and his ability to bring some scoring touch to the lower lines. Eager doesn’t interest me in the slightest, but I can be easily swayed by goals. With Clowe and Nichol out, its not like we have our full team going against the NHL’s best…so it’s not a fully accurate view of how we match up. But it would be nice to see the boys respond and keep playing well.

Win or lose, I just don’t want them to look as shitty as they did on the losing streak. That was just intolerable…

This game should be fun

Roles have been reversed (slightly) in terms of the streaks these two teams are running. Hopefully we can start scoring and keeping the GA low. That +0 goals for/goals against differential is pissing me off. And our record at home is vomitrocious, so hopefully this road string will help.

As for Nabby, looked over at Wiim and they’ve concluded that he’s a “choker” and it would be better if Evgeni “playoff failure” Nabokov did not join their team. Great, now I hate Wings fans even more.

I like the Stoner Line.

THC seem to have some chemistry going (no pun intended).
Every game is pretty much a must-win game for the Sharks, as the point gap expands. The teams above them play each other, and are getting points. A long winning streak by the Sharks needs to be combined with some losing streaks by teams currently sitting in the playoff spots, for the Sharks to dig out of this Duck-hole.
It can be done. The Sharks have proven they can win, just have to make sure the whole team is on board, every game, every play.
Go Sharks! Beat the evil twins!

Not really that deep of a hole

We’re what, 3 points back. If we win 5 out of the next 6 games, I guarantee we’re at least 6th-7th seed.
Course, in order to get back to home ice advantage or catch up with Vancouver or something like that, yeah, we need to go on some crazy streak and they need to lose a bunch.

by warning on Jan 20, 2011 4:10 PM PST up reply actions

The hole is deeper than it looks

(TWSS)

The point differential aside, there’s also the fact that we need to leapfrog 2 teams, and the team immediately behind us (St. Louis) has 2 games in hand. It’s not just about the point differential. It’s also about the right teams winning and losing.

It’s not catastrophic or anything, but we shouldn’t be glib about how serious it truly is.

Last game

The last time we faced Vancouver, it was being billed as a statement game for the Sharks. We were on a winning streak, and going in to face one of the best teams in the league. Sitting at 4th in the West, it was a turning point to see if we would start to emerge as the best team in West.

Well, we got killed and outplayed in almost every aspect. Then we spiraled down into a losing streak and put ourselves out of the playoffs. Here we are again! This is a huge game!

Go Sharks!

We were pathetic, and ended up losing 4-3

I’m not sure how this team does it, but they seem to hang around with the better teams. Hopefully there’s a bit more energy after seeing just how bad this team could be, and a solid win because of it.

13 goals on Luongo would be a major statement!

I would love to see Niemi blank the Canucks, with Couture having a multiple point game and the big three really lighting the lamp! I am sick of hearing about the freaking Twins and how amazing Luongo is! Sit a big man right in his crease and he gets all pissy and cries about it; take his mind out of the game, much as we saw the hawks do to him in the playoffs! Place Heatly’s big body right in front of him and how much you want to bet lamps will be lit all night!
On the whole Nabby case, no way I want to see him in a Wings sweater, much rather see him in a Sens, Islanders (really don’t seem him going here as the Isles are deeply in love with there injury prone DiPietro sp?), hell I don’t know what the Bluejackets cap looks like but haven’t they been struggling with consistency in their crease as well?

Nitty and Niemi are a combined $4M.

Patty is $6.9M.

Patty’s extension cost us a lot. A. Lot. Again, if he’s eating $7.5M+ of LA’s cap while they’re trying to figure out how to keep Johnson, Doughty, Brown and others, I call it a win. Or, if he signed for $5M and we had an extra $2M or so in cap space, also a win.

Reflex goalies not named “Dominic Hasek” don’t last until they’re 40. Signing Nabby to a multi-year contract would be a mistake.

Patty goes hot and cold, and his +/- this year stinks, but he’s got the frame and wheels to be a scoring threat well into his mid-30s.

This just makes the whole goalie situation even more interesting (read: scary). This is pretty much what people were worried about for quite some time, considering Greiss is not an option. They mentioned it on KNBR a little while ago too so it must be true!

Also, reading back in these comments, someone beat me to it. Must be that I got up early today. And, I just walked back in the house after tightening my vehicle’s battery post, that took two hours! It’s quite crowded in there, have to take so many things apart just to be able to pull the battery out enough to reach the terminal post.
I’m tired, Sharks better win tonight.

They've been doing that for awhile

I commented on it during the previous Sharks-Flyers game.

They had a variety of stuff, kinda like the whole Hostess range, and then some . My favorites were the chocolate & peanut butter ones.

We play co-operative musical chairs with the kids at work. You still take out a chair, but the kids have to figure out how to still get everybody sitting down. If everybody gets a seat they win…all the way down to 1 chair. Older people can play all the way down to 0 chairs!

With Niitty out...

I think this is the perfect time to get Stalock a sniff of the NHL. Calling him up to play backup and get a start or two at this level would probably help his development a bit. We could see where he is, how well he does…then send him back with things to work on when Niitty is better.

Stalock very well may be the future. Getting him a week or two of NHL experience would be rather useful…

CSN stream

is there a stream with Randy and Drew? I can only find Rogers streams.

I had to move 3,000 miles away for the Giants to win the World Series.
