St. Louis Dispatch

Coming off a disappointing outing against the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night, the Sharks get a quick chance to clean up their game and get back on the ice tonight against the St. Louis Blues.

After giving Anaheim the run around during the initial ten minutes of the tilt, a Dan Boyle interference penalty at the 10:49 mark of the first period began to turn the tides against San Jose. The Ducks went on to dominate the ensuing 4v4 play, generate a pair of chances on the man advantage, and get their legs under them after being outplayed early on. They would take that into the second period, where San Jose had issues generating much of anything, and continue to wear down the Sharks until late in the third when San Jose got some life and began to string some effective shifts together.

By that time it was too little too late however, and the Jonas Hiller show that the Sharks have become familiar with over the last four seasons was in perfect form. Hiller made 31 saves in his first home game since February 2nd, including a pair of robberies against Joe Pavelski and a nifty cross crease save against Ryane Clowe. Dan Boyle would hit a post late as well, but the Sharks didn't manage to convert in a four minute span at the end of the game where they finally looked to have some life.

Rookie centerman Maxime Macanauer would score the game's only goal of the night, receiving a pass from George Parros from behind the net and taking advantage of some busted defensive coverage from the Sharks third pairing and fourth forward line. The Ducks bottom six forwards were giving the Sharks fits all night, utilizing their speed to stretch San Jose's defense and get into the forecheck quickly and aggressively.

Thomas Greiss was excellent in the loss, only giving up one marker despite facing 23 shots and being subjected to what looked like well over double digits in the scoring chance category. Greiss was the only reason San Jose was able to hang on for as long as they did in the second period, as the Ducks top line of Ryan-Getzlaf-Perry continued to be deadly on the low cycle and put together some dangerous scoring chances.

Star-divide

Against the Blues, San Jose will have to clean up just about every aspect of their game. Sharks Head Coach McLellan indicated on  Friday that Vandermeer will be likely for a starting spot on Saturday. The logical defenseman to replace would be Colin White considering they are both good fits for a bottom pairing role with Jason Demers; expect that decision to be made somewhat regardless of who fits where; White ha a poor game last night for the Sharks, something that Vandermeer will be able to take advantage of when trying to catch the eye of Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan.

There isn't not much San Jose can do on a purely individual effort tonight in order to improve on their outing against Anaheim-- the forecheck as a whole was middling, the passing through the neutral zone frustrating, and movement in the offensive zone didn't have much (if any) precision to it either. These weren't maladies that effected single lines or individual players-- for the most part they were team-wide issues and breakdowns that spanned across the roster. Outside of Greiss, Pavelski, and Desjardins (who drew two penalties), it was a sluggish and slow evening for the entire team.

The biggest key tonight? Get their legs going early on. A back to back after six game days off will not be as difficult as a game later in the season, so using that energy from the home crowd early is going to be important for San Jose. Whether you want to hang it on the six-day layoff or the inevitable off-night that every NHL team experiences at numerous points during the season, turning in an effort like the one from last night is bound to result in another one in the loss column for a Sharks team trying to get out to the strongest start possible.

Prediction: Sharks win 5-3. Goals by Pavelski (x2), Burns, Clowe, and Mitchell.

Very frustrating

to watch. The team just has to put it together. You could see that they were trying but just couldn’t take a step back. Instead they just kept dumping the puck in for an easy goal and kept playing right into the ducks hands. Anaheim absolutely owned the corners and the Sharks were just out of it. I don’t know about the Blues but I expect a completely different, much more grinding game against the Ducks on Monday.

Standard Sharks break syndrome, and this goes back many seasons. Break between games of 4+ days = auto loss for the next game. Maybe too many distractions and the players just aren’t buzzing on the same frequency etc, but ALWAYS in those games things just seem so disjointed.

by VVhirlwind on Oct 15, 2011 2:01 AM PDT reply actions

Poor preparation

I understand rust being a factor, but the team just CAN NOT continue to do this. They have to find some way to stay focused during these long breaks.

Sharks one point behind last season

Game 2: 0-1 loss
Game 2 last season: 2-3 overtime loss
At 2 games: 1-1-0 / 2 pts
At 2 games last season: 1-0-1 / 3 pts
Next 10 games, games 3-12 last season: 5-5-0
going: L, L, W, W, L, W, W, L, L, W

So, only 2 games into the season with a 1-1 record, still doesn’t put the Sharks in a bad place. In the Potential Points standings (known last season as the Magic/Tragic Numbers standings), the Sharks are still in 3rd place in the Conference. That being said, there are still a lot of games to be played, and the Sharks have the capability to put some high scores on their side of the scoreboard.

Note: Sharkstistics still pending. I have the charts running on my computer. Programs aren’t cooperating with each other like they were in the past, and are leaving artifacts in the browsers.

If you mention ending your life, or show signs of self-harm, I will take you seriously!

I've got a fever. And the only cure is MOAR GOALS.

Not that Halak will be difficult to score on. I do kinda hope Sharks win in OT though, because I wouldn’t mind the Blues getting a point. :P I really think we ought to reinvent our mojo though… Last year’s stuff is clearly outdated and ineffective. So… Scour your pictures folder and hit up some Google Image Search, and get the Sharks train running on schedule.

Missed last night’s game, but it sounds like the Sharks were off. But I’ll let it slide. It’s only been a week into the season… and it was the 2nd game? The guys who did the scheduling this year screwed up big time, and for many teams. Not sure why.

Though I do find it funny that the Ducks’ guy scored his first career goal against us last night. Of course.

Now that the games have normal intervals between them, I expect the team to have some sort of rhythm.

It was a weird game

Sharks looked out of sync. Passes were soft and random at times. I caught my self yelling “why would you pass it there” throughout the game. Oh well, I’ll blame it on the long break and goal-tending by Hiller ( I like him better when he isn’t playing). Greiss played great tonight, seems to have stepped it up a notch since a few season ago. If he continues his solid play, I can see him in a backup role even when Nitty is healthy. Putting this loss quickly behind me! On to the next one, Go Sharks!

There was that sequence in our defensive zone

where we made perfect centering passes on our own net at least twice. Clowe sent a perfect feed to a Duck in front, but fortunately our Dman was there to tie it up and clear it out. Passing was awful last night, especially on the power play and zone entry. Hope that’s something they work on in the morning skate today.

Go Sharks!

I’m pretty excited to watch St. Louis play and it should be a really good test for the Sharks. They had huge issues in the past with speedy skill teams.

I’d really like it if McLellan would chill out a bit with the line juggling – I know he was just trying to find a spark, but I thought A. Murray & Desjardins were two of the better players in the first half of the game last night and I’m not sure either saw more than a shift in the 3rd (I didn’t check shift charts).

I also really hope Burns settles down and just plays an easy game. I know it’s only 2 games into the season but he’s trying way too hard and it’s really not working all that well.

Lastly…I really don’t like Hiller! Wish he would suck more often.

by milanahalek on Oct 15, 2011 8:02 AM PDT reply actions

Sometimes

like after a long break I also wish Mclellen would stop with all the line juggling. If the team is clearly not getting it together because there’s no rythm then they should be left alone to try and find it, maybe just juggle the bottom 2. I think he tries to force rhythm like a spark to get something going and it just doesn’t work. Clowe was off by an empty net and it just felt like the entire team had to start over every time there was a new line. Playing the 4th line more would’ve been a better way to find a spark I agree (if that’s what you meant). They’re really good and should be played a lot more.

I hate defensive counter attacking teams so much, in any sport. So damn frustrating to watch sometimes. Which only adds to my hate for the Ducks.
Burns might have some ADHD I think, so slowing down might be a problem.
And is it me or does Hiller, Getzlaf and a lot of the Ducks look like they could be related? Or is it just the overall douchbagness of the team that gives them that look. Nothing against Hiller, I just don’t like the way he plays.

by raphelo on Oct 15, 2011 11:21 AM PDT up reply actions

McLellan didn't actually do that much line juggling last night until the very end.

Until the last 8 minutes of the game, Clowe and Couture were locked to one another, as were Jumbo, Patty, and Pavs. Before that the only major change was flipping McGinn and Wingels and shutting down the 4th Line (which I think was a mistake as they were drawing the penalties). In the last 8 minutes, McLellan shortened the bench and only played the vets, which is worthy of some criticism, but most coaches would do the same in that situation. I doubt the Canucks would sit the Sedins with 8 left and down one in favor of putting on Lapierre nor would the Caps skip Ovie to get DJ King out there.

Also, looking at the shifts on timeonice.com, it looks like Couture got trapped out there on a double-shift at around the 8-minute mark. They got Clowe back out there with him for part of that, and Handzus joined them at that point, probably to win the faceoff so Couture could be freed to go to the net, which isn’t bad strategy if you have a faceoff specialist.

Do you think

McGinn and Wingels could be the problem? I mean the whole we need a good player to replace Wellwood on the 3rd line talk. I know offense wasn’t or isn’t the entire problem and that it’s still early but?

by raphelo on Oct 15, 2011 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

McGinn or Wingels on the 2nd line

as they were last night, is DEFINITELY a problem. On the 3rd line, not so much.

anyone remember that moment in the third where mclellen mixed the lines up a bit to try and get something going and Thornton and Couture ended up on the same line? The Sharks did not look sharp at all. Their passes were off mark, they were bobbling the puck. It was a mess, hopefully they shake off the rust and play better tonight. On a different note, Nabby will be starting in goal for the Isles tonight! Good luck to him!

My biggest concern last night is that Boyle, Patty, and Jumbo looked like they were floating.

Or just confused as shit in the case of Jumbo making a decent zone entry, then deciding he needed to take a breakaway on Greiss.

I think some of that is the Ducks first line doing well. I think some of it is our guys not… I don’t know. Being mentally or physically engaged, I guess. There were a few times where I saw Boyle pull up on going into a corner or up to the wall to chase a puck effectively giving the Ducks the puck for free. Jumbo and Patty seemed to lose two out of every three puck battles.

Add on top of that the 3rd line couldn’t finish on some strong scoring chances (the over-passed breakaway by McGinn and Handzus comes to mind) and it looks pretty ugly.

I think, much as I like Wingels, it might be worth it to try switching him to one of the lower lines and moving McGinn, Desjardins, or Murray into his slot. Tommy seems to be working hard and playing fairly well and Cloweture seem to have their same chemistry with one another, but the three as a whole unit doesn’t seem to click. I think my ideal right now would be Wingels on the 3rd line to help Mitchell and Handzus finish and McGinn on the 2nd line to help Clowe retrieve pucks.

Just a question

When is Havlat playing? I know this is only 2 games into the season but he is already giving us reason to start disliking him. I don’t think he is malingering but this could get old very quickly and his speed would have been a great asset last nite.

I know he has problems but damn this is game 3 and Im not one of the people who thought heater was done, just needed time to heal. we could of kept him a let him sit for the first 10 if we were going to let Havlat just kinda idle. Hes a new player and needs to show his commitment to the team. if his doc says no go then there is no arguing with that but still doesnt mean I have to enjoy the thought that we have this really fast and responsible (seems to be anyways from the games i have seen) forward.

I dont know what will happen during the season but i am a plan for the worst but hope for the best kind of guy. So i am expecting him to get injured again this season no matter how long he lets that shoulder heal based on his career. He wasn’t injured a whole lot the last 2 seasons it seems so that gives me some hope. I know that it’s not Havlat’s fault but the whole he will play when he is ready and not before thing is getting as old as the we didn’t have our legs tonite excuse. I would say that letting Heatley go was a mistake but who knows and it russled up some money to secure Teeth for a long time. Burns is likely to pay off but he may never fit right as well, we will see as the season pregresses. Havlat needs to play, the team needs that speed.

They’ll be n’sync tonight. The Blues will go bye bye bye.

In case you haven't heard, I'm sick and tired of trying.

Rust shaken off...

At least I hope so. Was at the Anaheim game last night and was so frustrated by the lazy play by 95% of the team… but I’m sure now that I will be watching the game for free at home here in Norcal, they will be amazing as ever.

Sharks win 3-1… goals by Couture, Thornton, and Demers. All their first goals of the season.

A girl I like

came over to party and hang with me last night. When I mentioned I was a hockey fan and that I liked the Sharks, she kinda giggled and mentioned how awesome the Ducks are. Not only did my mouth drop a few inches, but I was already in the process of looking up the final score of the game. Of all the days the Sharks had to drop a 1-0 shutout to the Ducks, it was this one.

If only you had called me beautiful to my face, I would have stolen someone else’s soul for my own! We would have been great together!

Agreed w Zero

When I started dating my gf, one of the conditions was that she become a Sharks fan. A relationship just can’t survive divided hockey loyalties.

Even as a teenager, there was once a guy who was interested in me and I was thinking of actually dating him… until I heard he was a Ducks fan. The only thing worse to me would be if he said he was a Red Wings fan. Punted him real quick!

I love my girlfriend.

She knew nothing about hockey before meeting me last February, and now she streams every game she can. We love to get together and cuddle up while wearing our Sharks jerseys. :3 The playoffs were ultimately what changed things from “I really like you” to “I’m crazy about you.”

SO. If I end up marrying this girl, it’ll be partly because of the Sharks… Perhaps I’ll wear a teal tie to the altar. :D

Glad to see Greiss play well

In the big picture, since we’ll likely trade him at some point, I’d like to see him go somewhere he can be the starter. So I hope he keeps having good showings. Also means Sharks will get more in return for him, which is a plus.

Due to boredom: If the playoffs started today...

West
1 – Detroit vs 8 – Edmonton
2 – Colorado vs 7 – Anaheim
3 – Dallas vs 6 – Nashville
4 – Minnesota vs 5 – Chicago

East
1 – Pittsburgh vs 8 – New Jersey
2 – Washington vs 7 – NY Islanders
3 – Toronto vs 6 – Buffalo
4 – Philadelphia vs 5 – Carolina

I love the early part of the season. Things are so ridiculously fluid—Like, right now the Sharks are in 12th in the West, and if they win tonight they will fly to a tie for 5th.

What would they really look like

if seeded per points per game instead of just the current unequal games-played points?
