First off, congratulations to Joe Thornton on the 1,000th game of his NHL career. It's a great milestone for a great player, and one that shows just how reliable he has been in the health department throughout his entire career. David Pollak of Working The Corners has more information on the subject here.

The Sharks are 1-3-0 right now, which isn't an especially comforting place to be in for a team that a) stated they wanted to start the year out strong and, most importantly, b) is heading out on a six game road trip that will span ten days against some good teams, with two of those games coming in back to backs. In a perfect world you'd want to have at least two wins under your belt at this point and have some cushion to deal with the havoc that hockey can throw at you in an opposing team's barn.

It's way too early to panic, but also too late for the losing to continue. That's a tough spot for a team to find themselves in early in a year filled with Stanley Cup expectations, especially when said team has essentially dominated the shot clock and wound up with two points to show for it. The Sharks currently lead the NHL in shots per game (with a cool 40.5 per) and are second in the NHL in shots against per game (23.5). That is the best shot differential in the entire League. The Detroit Red Wings are second in this category and are 4-0-0. Go figure, eh?

In other words, the Sharks are doing the right things correctly, and doing them quite superbly for long stretches of game time. The issue is that their first periods have been atrocious, turnover plagued events that have caused them to give up the first goal in every loss. When you spot a team a lead early they're going to sit back and allow those shots to happen, fortify the crease in front of their goaltender, and cut down on second chance opportunities.

People will always talk about how important it is to get that early goal on the road, and that analysis becomes fatigued because it's used so often. Considering the Sharks recent trend of coming out flatter than two month old soda however, it is relevant tonight. The Devils have historically been a team that has had a very good winning percentage when scoring first in a game, finishing each of the last three seasons above or around the 70% mark. They're off to a good start this season under new Head Coach Peter DeBoer, and look like a team that could compete for a low seeded playoff spot in the East-- at the very least, they'll be much more competitive than they were during the beginning of the season last year. This ain't your gimme two point game folks.

Star-divide

Jeremy Roenick has a new feature on NHL.com called "The World According to JR" where he goes through and breaks down teams across the League. His inaugural post touches upon the Sharks and Avalanche, and states how the Sharks have historically been slow starters but he still expects them to finish at the top of the League at the end of the season:

The San Jose Sharks are, in my opinion, still the strongest team in the League, but they are historically slow starters, so I'm not totally surprised they are just 1-3 heading into a six-game road trip.

There is no question in my mind that they will turn it around, that Joe Thornton will have another good year, and that they will be at the top of the League come the end of the season. But this is one of those situations where they have a lot of new guys, and they have a lot of people that are getting acclimated and injured.

>> NHL.com

Over the last four years under Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan the Sharks have had some issues with their starts to the year, but nothing that is really an issue. As the years have gone by the team has gotten slightly worse in October but have gone deeper in the postseason each year, which underscores the point that it's way too early to read much into the 1-3 record at this point. However, it should be noted that San Jose would have to go 5-1-0 on the road trip to equal what they did last season in the points per game department, which is not so much significant as it is an opportunity for me to show off my algebraic skills:

So yeah. They should probably try their hand at this winning thing sometime soon. People always ask us at what point the Sharks would pursue a deal in the early season, and our response is always "it's too soon to tell." With that being said, if the Sharks come out and continue to struggle in the wins department on this road trip after getting both Havlat and Niemi back in the lineup, I think it's a safe bet to say that Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson would be quite aggressive in trying to add a player and shake things up. Again, that's an early call before a six game road trip that hasn't occurred yet, but something to look out for as the games begin to pile up.

Martin Havlat makes his season debut tonight for San Jose and will play on the second line alongside Logan Couture and Ryane Clowe. Benn Ferriero was recalled from Worcester yesterday and will find himself in the lineup tonight-- nothing is official yet, but some speculation on Twitter yesterday indicated that Desjardins would be the odd man out (which doesn't make much sense to me but we'll see how it plays out).

Expect Niemi in net for San Jose, Jonathan Hedberg between the pipes for the Devils.

Prediction: Sharks win 3-2. Goals by Boyle, Marleau, and Havlat. A 78 save performance by Hedberg nearly gets New Jersey the regulation win, but a late goal by Havlat and the game winner by Boyle in overtime stave off Vulture Watch 2011.

I actually agree with JR here. The Sharks are slow starters, but they can’t afford to drag out the losing for too long.

A few things:

1. I’ll be wearing my Sharks jersey all day, because I noticed I hadn’t worn it since they played Phoenix…
2. San Jose will play an Eastern Conference team in the playoffs.
3. I imagine Wingels will be sent down (scratch), unless Doug McLelland wants to have Desjardins develop further in Wooster. Mitchell can centre the fourth with ease, so it figures that McGinn and Ferreiro will act as Handzudomon’s wingers.
4. I wouldn’t think TOO much about Ferreiro being called up. He could just be an extra man on the roster in case of a road injury, or on another try-out basis.
5. GO SHARKS GO!
6. … Fuck the Canucks.

Okay, that's what I figured would happen

I was responding to the idea that Mitchell would slot into the 4th lien center role, which I saw no reason to do when there is already another player capable of filling that role who is already on the 4th line.

Guys who could contribute in Worcestor

Should NOT sit on the bench up here. I don’t buy the BS that sitting in the press box somehow allows a guy to absorb the NHL game, when he could be using his skates and his stick in a real hockey game in Worcestor, working with a competent coach like Roy Sommer. I sincerely hope that only Vandermeer and Winchester spend any significant time up there.

The only players on the roster right now that don’t have to clear waivers are Couture (for 20 something more games), Ferriero (for 5 more games) & Wingels.

by milanahalek on Oct 21, 2011 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

He'd be exposed to waivers

Someone would probably claim him on re-entry. But I don’t see McGinn needing to be scratched anytime soon. And he’s not at a point where being scratched for a game will hurt him. The younger guys (funny to think he’s not a young guy when he’s only 23) who don’t have much NHL experience though, I think they need to be playing, not sitting.

Just hope they keep those mistakes in mind

and forget about the 3 losses. Correct themselves without being too negetive. This team has only shown flashes of what it can do since game one and the group needs to find a way to put an entire game together. Great day for Joe Thornton and GO SHARKS!

Desjardins

I think sitting Desi for a game or two to watch is going to help him in the long run. I don’t think he’ll be sitting for long. He’s made some pretty bad mistakes the last couple of games (he’s NOT the only one) and that’s not something you want from a guy playing low minutes on the 4th line.

I like Ferriero on the 3rd line, getting a guy w/ some offensive pop next to Mitchell & Handzus is a good idea.

I also like Winchester/Murray/McGinn together…a great skating, hard hitting 4th line, they might be fun to watch.

Don’t know that I expect the lines to last throughout the game but I do hope they start to find some chemistry.

I’m also hoping the team figures out how to put it all together tonight.

Go Sharks!

by milanahalek on Oct 21, 2011 8:44 AM PDT reply actions

I have to say I think McGinn belongs on the 3rd line… he’s been playing with a lot of grit, speed, and lots of attempted shots. I like him with Mitchell and Handzus. But hey, I don’t get paid for my ideas on the line up.

McGinn has been playing OK – the last game was definitely his best, but at this point (going 1-3) it’s about production. He hasn’t produced anything through the 4 games and has had only 4 SOG. I’m fine with them givng Ferriero a shot. If the lines aren’t clicking tonight I’d imagine there will be more player shuffling & that will continue until they find some combos that work.

by milanahalek on Oct 21, 2011 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions

The team

really feeds off eachother and only having 5 top scoring fwds instead of 7 might of messed with them more than what a lot of us thought it would before the season started. Not having 2 more players to fall back on after all the super adrenaline wore off from the 1st game?
With all the mistakes and just getting Havlat back I’m mostly focused on the Wingels/Ferriero spot Tmac is trying to fill.
And here’s to hoping Mclellan can finally find 2 top lines that can click with Havlat! Be it with Pav or Hav next to Thorton or even if Handzus moving up to the second and Pav moving back down to the 3rd. I say the team comes out Phx game strong today.

Congrats to Jumbo Joe Thornton!

He’s my favorite Shark… has been one of my favorite players in the league since the late 90’s. What a career he’s had thus far and I hope to see him in teal for the next 8+ years. :)

I think this road trip will prove to be fruitful and beneficial for the Sharks. They are away from home and only around each other, which helps chemistry. That’s what the Sharks have been lacking- no communication and sloppy play because no one knows what to expect from the other.

I like the prediction Plank set… it will be a close one but Sharks finally put another notch in the win column… and Hedberg is on my fantasy team and I’m totally cool with a 78 save performance, even if it means a non-win for him. LOL!

So Sharks win 3-2… goals by Couture, Marleau, and McGinn.

Funny to think that throughout his career if he just missed one more game the past 14 years he’d be playing this 1000th in Boston. But nonetheless, congrats Joe, you’ve been my favorite Sharks player in the Franchise’s history. Still the best trade DW has ever made.

TMAC always stresses shot selection.

But its up to the players to execute the right shot selection (higher percentage shots) rather than just throwing it on net just for the sake of it, hoping something good happens. You got a snipe of a shot Couture, Marleau, Pavs, etc…USE IT!

I have season tickets to the jackets games. Im 100% percent a sharks fan, but I like to see the home town team do well too. Its the best chance at seeing pro hockey around here, and I go to every sharks game they come here. But I mainly cant wait for the detroit game next week. I’ll be there up there cheering the sharks and celebrating my bday

If the Jackets beat Detroit, I'll be very happy.

I just want to see

one or two sharks in front of the net (really in front of the net) after every major shot. That’s all I ask.
That with Burns and Demers stepping it up in their own zone. Let’s Do This!

Look, I don’t mind too much if a sponsor gets a mention for power-plays and other in-game nonsense, but shut the fuck up about Lexus, Drew.

I hope to god he just decided to be a little cute with that segment, and it isn’t something he’s obligated to do for the rest of the season.

Well said

You said what I’ve been thinking, but since I cannot articulate nearly as well as you Mr. Plank, I find myself nodding a lot when I read your posts. Too early to panic, but a disconcerting start to the season. I know we’re supposed to have a potent offense and I think in time, when the players gel together, we will. I’m glad Ferriero is getting a chance, as I think we can really use his offense. McGinn I like on the 4th line with Winchester and Murray. Wingles is the odd man out. I also hope Braun gets a shot pretty soon, although our defensive scoring is already good. Havlat plays tonight and Niemi just needs a few games to get his timing and rhythm down.

Go Sharks, let’s win one for Jumbo’s 1,000th game!

2. Wait, really? I thought Blizzard didn’t make their panda race playable characters in WoW because they didn’t want to piss off the PRC (since they consider the panda a national symbol and the country is home to a lot of WoW gold farmers subscribers).

Well, the expansion is called "Mists of Pandaren".

It’s a Chinese-themed world thingy. So. I think it’s less about pissing them off, and more and sucking them off.
