Sharks come back twice against Devils, win 4-3 in the shootout
Heading into tonight's game against the Devils the Sharks were first in shots per game and second in shots against. The issue wasn't getting scoring opportunities or giving up too many-- it was burying what came their way, and avoiding the brutal turnovers that have characterized so many goals against this season. San Jose played a nearly flawless game in the second area, only giving away the puck twice, and found themselves sporting a gaudy 41-19 shot advantage at the end of the night.
And yet the Sharks trailed 3-2 with under a minute left to play in the third period, needing a big goal late in order to avoid a 1-4 start to the season.
They got it from Joe Pavelski.
With 32 seconds left on the clock and Sharks netminder Antti Niemi on the bench to make room for the extra attacker, Joe Thornton pushed the puck out of a mad scramble in front of the net to the near circle. A creeping Pavelski was in perfect position to receive the puck, bending down to his knee and chipping the puck up top where it kissed off the top of the crossbar and down past the goal line.
It was the kind of break the Sharks needed to get back in the win column, and the kind of result they will look to build on tomorrow night with a date against the similarly struggling Bruins.
Late game heroics aside, the goal by Pavelski wasn't the only comeback San Jose managed to mount tonight. After spotting New Jersey a two goal advantage, off a goal by Parise via penalty shot and a beautiful play by Ilya Kovalchuk to keep the puck away from Michal Handzus and find Patrik Elias across the zone for the score, the Sharks came roaring back in the second period and managed to erase a two-goal deficit that was beginning to loom large.
Outshooting the Devils 20-5 in the middle frame, San Jose took a page out of last year's playbook and showcased how quickly they can get themselves back into games. Joe Thornton snuck a shot past Hedberg five hole on the rush after Dan Boyle found Joe Pavelski with an excellent outlet pass up the ice, cutting the lead to one.
A mere 1:03 later the Sharks struck again, as Logan Couture did a good job of sealing off the boards on an attempted Devils breakout and generating a turnover in the offensive zone. Clowe, Couture, and Havlat all got wacks at the puck in front of Hedberg, with Clowe's skate eventually doing the damage as the puck bounced off it into the net.
The blueline put in their best performance of the season tonight, with notable efforts from Colin White and Jason Demers considering their struggles thus far this season. Both players made good reads and executed the safe play in their own end, jumping into the play in the offensive zone during low-risk situations. If that pairing can build off tonight's quality low-key performance, the Sharks defensive depth will be all the better for it. Brent Burns and Marc-Edouard Vlasic have continued to get better every game; although Burns made a few poor decisions in the neutral zone, these are the types of things the Sharks are going to live with throughout the year considering his stellar offensive ability. As Vlasic becomes more accustomed to when Burns is going to jump up into the play, those decisions will become easier for Burns to make.
Penalty trouble was the name of the game for the Sharks in the first period as they paraded to the box three times in the tilt. Credit Niemi for keeping it close in the early going, as New Jersey had a couple chances that could have gone in. Niemi had another relatively strong game in net despite his statistics stating otherwise, but I would like to see a better decision from him on that Clarkson goal which put the Sharks down 3-2. With Clarkson in tight Niemi came up out of the butterfly and tried to readjust his positioning-- if he stays down and takes away the lower portion of the net, there's no where for Clarkson to go but into his chest.
The power play was 0 for 5 on the night, with some poor entries into the zone littered in between some excellent opportunities that Hedberg managed to foil. When the power play is playing well it is lights out, but when it is going poorly it feels like 100% of it is due to their entries. The Sharks obviously don't like to give away possession with the man advantage, but chipping the puck in deep will back the blueliners off just a touch next time because it's pretty clear the drop passes and frantic feeds across the zone at the blueline are not going to work each go 'round.
The second line looked excellent for a couple shifts tonight, with Havlat's dynamic skating ability really bringing a lot to the fold. They probably had the best Sharks shift of the game with a nice low cycle during the second period that generated a couple scoring opportunities. Havlat looked on and off throughout the game as you would expect him to be, but once they get clicking in about five games, that is going to be a very dangerous tool at the Sharks disposal.
Torrey Mitchell left the game with what appeared to be either a shoulder or elbow injury and did not return. Devils forward Nick Palmieri drilled him into the boards in the first minute of the game, causing play to be stopped and Mitchell to head to the dressing room to be evaluated. With three points on the season and his speed looking as good as ever, you hope that this setback isn't one that keeps him on the shelf for an extended period of time.
All in all the Sharks had an effective game tonight. A mere two giveaways is going to help you win a lot of games in this League, and outshooting a team 41-19 is a surefire way to ensure you're putting yourself in position to get those breaks to go your way.
San Jose heads into Boston tomorrow night for a matchup with the Stanley Cup champion Bruins. Puck drops at 4:07 PM.

Please have a good game against the Bruins, Sharks
especially Nemo Griess. Fixed it for you.

Although I wish you were right BT. This is exactly what backups are for! Back-to-backs! How much you wanna bet TMac rolls Niemi out again versus the Preds on Tuesday…?

I actually think this is the right move here
Nemo missed out on several starts to start the season and plays much better when he gets in a rhythm. Get him into the zone, then we can start giving Griess starts.
It's less a concern of the here-and-now
and more of a concern of what this back-to-back start could project to the future of the season. Nemo was ridden harder than the mechanical bull at The Saddle Rack last season (just to get into the playoffs) and his resulting play in the playoffs was inconsistent.
I know he needs to get his reps in, but I’d just prefer if he was eased back (especially on a back-to-back), because I TMac goes Pringles on his starting goalies: Once he pops, he can’t stop. My preference is just to let Greiss play today, then send Niemi back in on Tuesday. But now with this development, who knows when we’ll see Greiss next?

Did anyone else
think, “Thank God it’s over”, after Thorton scored? Damn it felt good when they tied it up. The second most important thing I saw was Boyle coming back strong for a strong 3rd after an over thinking, shaky 2nd. Worst officiating I’ve seen in a while though. Good to see them fight through it.

Wouldn't be shocked if....
1) Mitchell is out for an extended period of time.
2) Douglas Murray is suspended for a game or two for his elbow to the head.
Death, taxes, and Torrey Mitchell getting injured.
Eight warnings plus one ban in the last month and counting.
It wasn't 7-0.
Therefore this game is a huge disappointment and the Sharks clearly have no heart.
I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!
Good job Giants, now win 3 more world series titles and then you just might be worthy of being mentioned in the same league as the A's.

Niemi needs to step it up
good to get the win, but we are not gonna be scoring with 30 some seconds left every game…..
Haters Gonna Hate
Not sure those were really his fault
Except possibly the third, and that one was sort of bullshit anyway, cause Colin White was interfered.
You give 90% of NHLers that much time open in front of the net
And they will score.

Pavs made my day, i wrote them out of it and was going through the motions of the last minutes of the game since their PP hadn’t been working all night and babam!
They’ll probably keep Mitchell out for the Boston game and simply bring Wingels into his slot. If there wasn’t anything wrong with it other than pain and soreness then he would have come back in the 3rd period, but that he didn’t suggests that it is at the level where better safe than sorry, so may as well sit him for the back to back.
I thought Niemi played well for everything except the 3rd goal, it was just a total misread, he thought there was someone coming to his left and read pass to the gaping open net and moved to cover it and the shooter just flicked his stick forward. Excellent psych fake, Niemi just choked on the pressure a little bit and tried to preemptively move and got caught on it. Oh wells.
`Can anyone tell me
How that wasn’t blatant interference on White before that third goal? Was this just a completely blown call, or am I missing something?
Niemi had another relatively strong game in net despite his statistics stating otherwise,
C’mon Plank, don’t lie to the people! Even if his play was technically sound, he let in three goals that could have been stopped. That’s the problem with the goalie’s job: You make a mistake (or in this case, three) and it looks bad on you.

Niemi's Play
Three Mistakes? He had almost no chance on NJ’s first goal (you have to give credit where credit was due, that was a great feed and excellent finish, if the Sharks did that would you be saying the opponent’s goaltender made a “mistake”?
I also fail to see what his “mistake” was on the penalty shot?
The only mistake I saw on the goals NJ scored was on the referee for missing the interference call that should have been called on NJ for interference on White at the blueline that allowed a wide-open Devil to score.
This comment is funny because last game Greiss also let in three goals and you consider him the “hot goaltender.”

burns hooking call - penalty shot
Did anyone else have a problem with it? Correct me if I’m wrong but a hook is when your stick is parallel to the ice and makes contact with the other players hands/stick. Burnzie’s stick was perpendicular to the ice. Am I missing something?
Either way, what really matters is he blew his assignment which lead to that breakaway

Havlat was pretty awesome.
I didn’t watch the game, and I only saw that one highlight from the goal, but he looks like he really wants to win right now (hopefully he keeps it up).
The speed he brings to that second line is just incredible. I feel like its a noticeably welcome change after Heatley (although I did love Heatley’s work ethic)

2nd Line
I can’ t believe what a difference Havlat made!! I know it wasn’t all him – Clowe still looks “off” but Couture looked much better and Havlat’s speed was noticable. He also has some pretty soft hands!
I feel horrible for Mitchell, it looks like the kid is finally putting it all together and he get injured off of an awkward hit. Hopefully it’s nothing long term for him. Same with Josefson (broken collar bone), the game of hockey can be mean sometimes!
Handzus has been everything I’ve expected him to be & more! I know people complain he’s slow, but with his smarts, positioning and size, he’s been a rock on that 3rd line. That desparation dive on the 3 on 2 late in the game was awesome.
Niemi is still pretty rusty as well, you can tell by his lateral movement as well as his ‘after save recovery’. I’m not so worried about him, he’s always been a bit of a slow starter.
All in all – YAY for the win! Team still has quite a bit of work ot do but hopefully the W will give them come confidence and hopefully they have the legs to skate w/ Boston tonight.
Havlat looks way smaller than usual...
I’m a ‘Hawks fan first (kill me later) and was disapointed to see Havlat leave Chicago in the first place. Being that he’s one of my favorite players, I was truly excited to see him land with the Sharks. But, is it just me, or does it seem like Havlat has lost 15 lbs or more since he left Minnesota? I know he’s never been a big player, but maybe it’s just the uniform or something because my first reaction was man, did he get sick or something? Shoulder surgery isn’t chemo…
If you can't be dead, at least be funny.
About time they sent Tommy down…

This Devil's Fan says it Best
Just off in the Left with his hands over his face
Glad to get a win, but still frustrated
Dan Boyle is struggling, and it seems to trickle down when he does. Even with all the new additions, it seems to me that #22 is still one of the most important cogs in the machine that drives us. If he’s off his game, it seems everyone is off their game.
I sincerely hope Patty is still suffering some flu-like symptoms, because he looks SLOW. He had some flashes of brilliance, and when he committed to puck retrieval, he opened up a lot of ice for Thornton and Pavelski, but I swear to Stalock, IF HE PULLS UP AT THE BLUE LINE ON A RUSH INTO THE ZONE ONE MORE TIME…
Niemi frustrates me and impresses me at the same time. The shootout, to me, was a microcosm of his game. On the Kovalchuk goal, he was just horribly out of position and slow, and let himself get beat. He responded, by playing his game and being excellent on the subsequent two goals, being patient, not letting anything get to him. He’ll still make me cringe on occasion, but dang it if he doesn’t work his ass off. And on a team that seems to get outworked at the worst possible times, that counts for a lot.
Ryane Clowe is a beast in the offensive zone, but he’s a train wreck on defense. He watches the puck WAY too much, and doesn’t get into the play.
I’m on board with Michael Handzus. Quite possibly the slowest forward on the team put his head down, skated down the middle and broke up a transition scoring opportunity, even when he was the second to last guy caught in the zone on that play.
The Clarkson goal CAN NOT HAPPEN. Yes, interference, blown call, whatever. But once White is down, SOMEONE has to communicate to Demers that he’s all alone and he has to stay on his feet. Frankly, that should be Niemi, but there are some 20ish guys on the same team. SOMEONE has to make a call. And Demers himself has to make a better read. I don’t understand that decision at all. Good on him for rebounding his next shift and clearing the crease, but he needs to recommit to his defensive game, something that he had been steadily improving last season.
I’m definitely proud that the team came back. And the goals were definitely of the second effort variety. It shows character. But character can also be showed when you play up to your abilities and be excellent. I’ll never say no to a comeback, but I’d like us to start smacking some guys around like we know we can instead of having to overcome ourselves in addition to the other team. A lot easier to beat one team night in and night out as opposed to two.
