Sharks hold on in third period, defeat Bruins 4-2
The Sharks may have been outshot and outchanced tonight in Boston, but some timely goal scoring and excellent play in net by Antti Niemi was good enough to hold off the defending Stanley Cup champions in the third period and put San Jose back at the .500 mark on the season.
Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture, and Benn Ferriero scored for San Jose at even strength, as Patrick Marleau added an empty net tally with four seconds remaining in the third period to seal the deal for the Sharks.
Both teams traded scoring chances in the first two shifts of the game, as Thornton nearly put one home past Tim Thomas when a dump-in bounced awkwardly off the end boards. The Bruins would go on to generate another excellent chance of their own on a 3 on 1 chance merely twenty seconds later, but Niemi came up with the stop. Finally, after Joe Thornton disrupted the Bruins breakout in the neutral zone pounced on the loose puck at the blueline, the Sharks put an end to the "First goal? You take it, no, you take it!" courtesies that were being extended between the two teams. Thornton sent a brisk forehand pass over to Pavelski where, entering the zone with speed, he rifled a beautiful wrister past an aggressive Tim Thomas to put the Sharks on the board early in the frame.
Frantic up and down the ice action punctuated with great energy on both sides dominated the remainder of the first period, with Boston pouring on shots in the offensive zone. The Bruins were firing pucks from all angles and getting sound aggressive pinches from their defenseman in the offensive zone, carrying the majority of play throughout the frame. San Jose would get a push back in the middle portion of the frame with some good opportunities from Couture, Marleau, and Pavelski respectively, but the Bruins would keep coming. Niemi had countless dandies in the period and looked like the goaltender who carried the Sharks on his back throughout the second half of last year.
The second period was a better outing for the Sharks, who pushed back well and began to generate some opportunities of their own. San Jose's second line capitalized in the middle of the period on a goal that was a perfect example of the kinds of skill sets each player brings to the table. After a dump-in by San Jose was played by a Bruins defenseman, Ryane Clowe came in hard on the forecheck and laid on a hit that separated his man from the puck. Martin Havlat jumped on it immediately, and sent a beautiful backhand pass to an uncovered Logan Couture in front of the net that Couture snapped home, giving the Sharks a 2-0 lead.
The second line of Havlat, Clowe, and Couture got better and better throughout the game, foreshadowing just how dangerous they are going to be later in the season when they become more comfortable with each other's tendencies. It has been said before many times of course, but the 1-2 punch San Jose has on their top two forward lines is a force that will allow them to stay competitive in every game this season.
And help them recover from rough starts to the third period.
Taking a 2-0 lead into intermission, and coming off a second period that was much better than the first, San Jose ran into trouble and allowed the pressing Bruins to quickly get back into the game. The first goal against came off an innocent looking dump-in that Niemi played behind his net. After the Bruins forwards had collapsed on him, Niemi tried to swing the puck around the boards to no avail. The bouncing puck skittered out in front of the net where it squeeked through the flailing bodies and onto the stick of Milan Lucic who put it into the net. It was Niemi's lone mistake of the night, but one that gave Bruins the momentum they needed to forge a comeback.
It didn't take long.
29 seconds later the Sharks chipped the puck out of their own zone after a tough board battle, but Dan Boyle and Douglas Murray both overcommitted and stepped up to attack the current puck carrier, Tyler Seguin. Recognizing the opportunity, Seguin hacked the puck into the zone onto the stick of Milan Lucic, who drove hard to the net and found Seguin streaking past a fallen Dan Boyle. Seguin roofed the shot past the helpless Niemi, tying the game and erasing a 2-0 Sharks lead in less than a minute.
Boston would continue to pressure San Jose, generating a trio of excellent scoring chances that Niemi would continue to foil. Outside of his giveaway on the Bruins first goal Niemi was absolutely stellar on the night, squashing Boston's chances and rarely giving them second chance opportunities in front of the net. Rebound control had been an issue for Niemi when he came over to the Sharks from Chicago last year, but tonight he showed just how much he has progressed in that area against a dangerous Bruins team.
After a Douglas Murray pinch led to a 2 on 1 going the other way that resulted in a Niemi save, the Sharks third line got to work on the ensuing faceoff. Chasing down a puck in the corner the recently called-up Benn Ferriero sent the puck up to the blueline where Jim Vandermeer corralled it and sent a shot to the net. Jamie McGinn got his stick on it on the way in, resulting in Tim Thomas unable to control his rebound. Benn Ferriero pounced on the loose puck in front, sliding the puck into the open net and giving the Sharks a 3-2 lead.
San Jose would survive a couple other odd-man opportunities the rest of the way, the most prescient being a 3 on 1 that Marc-Edouard Vlasic played perfectly. Taking away the pass Vlasic shut down the initial opportunity perfectly; after the loose puck kicked out to Chris Kelly, Niemi would slide across his crease and make an excellent stop to keep the 3-2 advantage intact. It was one the Sharks would not give up.
Overall, tonight was a game that is a good one to see the Sharks win. They were outshot and outchanced by an opposing team for the first time this season, but great survival mode instincts by Antti Niemi, timely goal scoring from the top three lines, and a penchant for blocking shots (21 in the game, with Boyle, Murray, Havlat, and Burns leading the way) helped seal the win.
You can always point to the possession numbers of blocked shots against, missed shots, and shots to paint the picture of who controlled the game, and in that sense, San Jose was definitely behind the ball-- Boston tallied 80 of the aforementioned numbers in comparison to the Sharks 50. Considering this was a much needed win, and San Jose's second game where they scored a big goal in the third period, the two points and excellent goaltending they received tonight overshadows any negatives that can be culled from these numbers.
After dropping three in a row the Sharks are off to a 2-0 start on a six game road trip that will take them through the end of October. It's a great start to a road trip the Sharks needed to have success on, and one that should help ease the early season adversity a 1-3 start provided.

This game was absolute poetry.
Thanks to Mrs Noctro for the wicked awesomest birthday present ever.
The Boston crowd was just livid at how well Nemo was shitting them down… There were just plain amazing saves in the game.
They did a great nod to Joe in the first. Was good to see that they still keep it classy in Boston.

But to be honest, I have heard some horror stories… A fellow I worked with was arrested for carrying an amount of weed only slightly above what’s considered “personal use”. He was convicted and spent two years in jail. He missed the first year and a half of his first child’s life because of it. I think that sort of thing is unreasonable… First offence should be like, a month in jail, plus some rehab programs. Obviously, smoking weed serves no constructive purpose if you’re not in constant crippling, but the best way to fix that is to get people off it, really. Not to ruin their lives.

Anyone else thinking
the 3rd line is set for a little while here? And that when/if Mitchell returns on Tuesday, he’ll be centering the 4th line?
The principal supporting business now is rage. -- Richard Hugo
Yeah
I say Mcginn goes down to the 4th and either Winchester or Dejardins sit out. It’ll be intresting to see who Ferriero works best with. Wingels deserved the chance but I guess it was always gonna be Ferriero’s spot. I’m also happy to see McGinn have a solid game to game role on the team, be it on the 3rd or 4th.
It is nice to see Ginner out there playing well
He may not be scoring a lot, but he’s had some really good looks and some excellent shifts. Guy plays a lot bigger than he is, and hasn’t been afraid to play in the scary areas of the ice. It was good to see him shoving Chara back after a whistle early in the game. Hope he breaks out this year and we get more than a glimpse of the promise he’s shown.
by Chicago Shark on Oct 22, 2011 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, this is part of my reasoning for kind of wanting tonight’s 3rd line to stick together—I like the size and energy of McGinn on that line, particularly when combined with Ferriero, who has the offensive ability and tenacity that works much better with a more skilled guy, like Zeus, rather than 4th line grinders.
I also don’t think Winchester needs to play every night and would be interested in seeing a 4th line of Mitchell-Desi-Murray. Maybe not enough size, though—but I think it could work against certain teams.
The principal supporting business now is rage. -- Richard Hugo

The only issue McGinn has is puck control— the guy just has so much trouble controlling the puck, whether it’s on the boards or in traffic. Get him in open ice and he’s fine, but he never seems to have that ability to get the puck out of scrums and up to the defensemen or down to a forward. If he fixes that as the year goes along, the guy is going to really help himself out and lock down a third line spot no problem.
Either way, McGinn is playing the best hockey I’ve ever seen him play right now. He’s been great.

The fact that I haven't heard his name been mentioned in the defensive zone is a very good sign.
I’m surprised. I’d given up on McGinn. To your point about his puck handling… Just imagine we combined McGinn’s skating and defensive work with Wellwood’s puckhandling and goal scoring (and tendency to try creative things)? We’d have another all-star!

Wellwood actually skates pretty well and because of the hands he has, is capable enough in the defensive end. His entire problem is his confidence in himself, which leads him to hesitate on almost every decision with the puck.
Many times last year he’d break into solid open ice with a significant scoring chance, only to let the moment go and turn it over, try something overly cute and turn it over, or simply pass to someone not as open has he himself was.
Shame we didn’t retain him. Even though I didn’t think he’d perform as well without Pavelski on his line, I still thought that given some time with Zues he could work on his own problems and be a pretty solid 2nd/3rd line playmaker on his own. His 3 goals so for in Winnipeg of all places should be proof enough of his capabilities. Oh well.
It's funny to watch him chug along on his skates/
No other player skates like Wellwood, really.

VVhirlwind's second paragraph
is one of the reasons why I was glad to see Wellwood go. He’s not a player you look to like the top 6 but when things might not be going right it would be better to see a 3rd liner like Handzus or even Ferriero who could make a difference or be able to cause a spark without letting their confidence get in the way. They ended up paying Winchester what they could have paid Wellwood for a really good rotating 4th line. And we all know they have the space to upgrade off Wellwood so.. the team can only get stronger in my eyes.

a lot of the reason for Boyle being so low in TOI was because he was lost yesterday. Dude was struggling for a full 40 minutes out there. Glad to see the rest of the D stepping up. Boyle struggled at the beginning of the season last year too, and I think he’ll be able to turn it around again.

I’m sure he will eventually. I don’t think they’ll keep Desjardins out of the lineup for very long.
This is why I didn’t want us to sign Winchester. He’s actually looked pretty good but still he doesn’t bring anything in particular to our team and he uses up a roster spot that could go to a guy like Ferriero or Wingels. Then again i don’t think Ferriero or Wingels are really fit for the 4th line anyway, so McGinn or Mitchell would have to play on the 4th line to make room for one of those guys, and I think both Mitchell and McGinn are a little too good for 4th line duty.

Yeah, pretty much....
Because mostly what Khaaz said already. Kid has spunk, and 2 memorable goals under his belt (including playoffs), but I think Tmac/Wilson want to leave him in the oven in the hopes of a stellar breakout year. Also, it would leave Worcester a little shorthanded (BigJohn could say more on that, I’m sure).

So because he is a FA next year you think Doug Wilson would want to get him for a steal on a new contract before he has that breakout season?

Interesting indeed
With DW’s win-now attitude, yet his consistant ability to work bargain contracts, this would seem to be something he has to weigh very carefully. Maybe he’s waiting to see how others are performing as to whether or not to deal them and bring those like Ferrerio up to stay.

Vlasic
He struggled a bit in games 2 & 3 but he’s been the best d-man on the team otherwise. It continues to completely blow my mind how underrated and under-appreciated the guy is.
I don’t think it’ll be too long before he and Burns start seeing top minutes and top competition…especially w/ how badly Boyle is struggling.
Yeah seriously.
And I love Boyle obviously, but Burns really is better, just with the size and speed and reach that he has—all of the different things he brings to the table. And Vlasic is more suited to shut down the top competition.

Disagree
Boyle’s way more defensively responsible and a better skater. Burns has advantages, don’t get me wrong, but right now I still pick Boyle as the better player.
I think Boyle’s struggles are being wildly overblown. It’s a mini slump. No big deal.
My eval has nothing to do with Boyle's struggles, but what Burns brings to the table.
I disagree that Boyle is a better skater, and I think Burns definitely has more upside defensively because of his reach and physicality. Again, I love Boyle and I think both are elite NHL defensemen, but I just think Burns brings the total package moreso than Boyle does. One man’s opinion though.

Seriously. Why would a rebuilding team trade a young burgeoning goal scorer for 2 old guys out of their prime who will be UFA’s next year??
A couple different reasons.
Booth is not a good defender so they probably felt he was paid too much and Reinprecht sucks so his contract was just dead weight. I think they did this trade so that they free up money for next season, and in the meantime Samuelsson and Sturm can probably make up for the production they lose from Booth this season.

A big part of it was getting Reinprecht’s money (he was in the minors) off the books.
With a team like Florida, don’t look at their cap. Look at their salary. They can’t afford to be paying a guy $2 MM+ to play in the minors. Vancouver can.
Either way, Canucks got way better. Man.

We’ll see how ‘not impressive’ he is when he’s playing with Kesler or the Sedins.
From what i’ve seen Booth is kinda like Setoguchi. He’s fast, he forechecks, hits people, works hard, and he can score goals. Booth has put up nearly identical numbers to Seto, except he didn’t have Joe Thornton, he put up those numbers on a very bad team and now he’s playing on one of the best teams in the league with a couple of the best centermen in the league.
All they had to give up for him were 2 injury prone soon-to-be-UFA wingers who are both out of their prime. I think they even gained a little cap space in the process.
Florida did not win that trade but it was absolutely a $$ move for them. They’ve apparantly been unhappy w/ Booth’s play for a while and he’s not worth his $4.25mil salary. He hasn’t been the same player since that Richards hit.
He will get to play next to Kesler so he’s getting a great oppoutunity to return to the 30g / 60pt guy. Vancouver took a bit of a gamble here as well becuase that’s a lot of money to pay a guy if he continues to put up 40pts a year.
Maybe instead of blaming him, get him some decent support, you know, someone who can pass the puck to him.
And another scorer to, most years all teams have had to do to shutdown Florida’s offense was to focus on Booth and Weiss.
I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!

Awesome win
I’m just glad Desi got to play… I was distraught.
Plus, he got the most ice time of the 4th liners, so I think the coaching staff has realized that they were picking on the wrong guy.
"Douglas Murray is a humongous human being." – Drew Remenda

Well he did take a dumb penalty on which Boston was getting a ton of scoring chances, so i don’t know if they were picking on the wrong guy. Had they scored on that PP we may not be celebrating a win right now, partially thanks to him; and it would’ve been the 4th game in a row he’s played in where he’s basically cost us a game.
But they didn’t score, and he does play well outside of the mistakes he keeps making so when/if he stops making those mistakes he’ll be an awesome part of our team.
I like Desjardins' game
However, he HAS to quit it w/ the stupid penalties. Everyone was complaining about Winchester and his penalty issues but he’s been faily disciplined so far. Desjardins, on the other hand, has cost the team quite a bit more than he’s giving (outsider of game 1).
It’ll be interesting to see what McLellan does if/when Mitchell is back on Tuesday. I think McGinn has played well enough to stay on the 3rd line, however, Ferriero’s goal may give him the edge and I don’t think Ferriero would be a very effective 4th liner.
If Ferriero stays on the SJ roster, I wouldn’t be surprised if Desi is scratched again on Tuesday.
He's just
trying to do too much, like Burns I guess. Good thing is, he calmed down after his penalty in the first. I like how all the roles are pretty much set and when everyone’s healthy Tmac is always gonna have to scratch someone people might not think deserves it. It’s only been a game but competition for those last spots seem to be working. Des and Braun should get to play the next game in my opinion with A. Murray sitting out. I know he hasn’t done anything to deserve it but I don’t think Winchester has either. Murray hasn’t been scratched yet and it would be good to see what Desjardins can do with more then just one different line mate.
And if Braun can keep up, I hope he gets to play at least 3 of the next 4 games (or all 4) of the east coast road trip.
I don’t necessarily think Desi should be scratched, but he may just end up the odd man out if Mitchell is healthy and Ferriero stays.
If Nashville doesn’t dress McGrattan it might be a good time to sit Winchester, though he hasn’t done anything to warrant being a scratch either.
I’ve been very happy w/ A. Murray’s game, I don’t think there is any reason at all to sit him.
by milanahalek on Oct 23, 2011 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions
I understand if
Desjardins sits out but you don’t think it would be maybe more productive to have a sort of healthy scratch rotation if no one is hurt and everyone seems to be playing well (if Ferriero sticks that is)? Players are bound to get hurt and spots are gonna need to be filled so it should never really be a problem. But in a game like tomorrow (if Mitchell plays) where no one seems absolutely deserving to be sat out…? I guess maybe I just want Desjardins and Ferriero to play more then what’s actually best for the team.

Excellent game despite the mistakes. The team is starting to gel again and really get back into the mood of the season. Hopefully they don’t dash my words in the next game, but just everyone’s head seems to actually be i the game. Thornton especially just isn’t playing like an adult with downs anymore.
Either way, much needed confidence boost to carry into the road trip. Its just a shame Vancouver was able to come back tonight >.<
About the Vancouver trade, I dunno, honestly I think it was an even trade really. Vancouver isn’t doing like they expected so this is their shakeup, they traded 2 20 goal 50 point scorers for 1 20 goal 50 point scorer. The trade is better set up for their future definitely, especially if the Vancouver system and better teammates prop Booth up more than he could do in Florida, however at the end of the day I don’t think they would have done the deal if they started 7-0. And so while Vancouver got their shakeup and accepted the “lopsided” deal for the youth guy, Florida gets money off its books and help THIS season in 2 veterans.
Outside of Vlasic
The defense looked like a f***ing train wreck in the third. Thank goodness for Niemi staying strong and timely scoring, otherwise this had the potential to be a really bad meltdown.
I made the point a few days ago that the Sharks only really get a few true measuring sticks in the season because they’re in the top tier of the league. So getting a win against the defending Cup Champions is a good thing, but seeing them give up 40 minutes of hard work in less than 30 seconds on a pair of boneheaded mistakes by three of the teams most important players is highly frustrating.
I think the third line definitely earned the game winner. Randy and Drew were talking about Ferriero’s knack for scoring 5 on 5, and I think it’s pretty simple actually. On that goal, that whole line was moving OFF THE PUCK.
The issue of shot selection has been beaten to death around these parts, but ANY shot looks better with traffic, and the easiest way to generate traffic is to be skating off the puck. When the power play, or the offense in general, looks stagnant, the way it was in the three games we’d like to forget, there was a lot of glide and standstill in too many people’s game. So nice to see good movement off the puck resulting in some very nice goals for Team Teal tonight.

Best post-game assessment came from Boston's Lucic:
"Just feeling it, just being out there on the ice it always felt like when you got the puck someone was on top of you and they really did a good job clogging up the neutral zone and kind of stopped our flow trying to create that speed."
I was thinking that the whole game. Major defensive pressure…more than any recent roster. I was having difficulty keeping track, but while SOG made it look like the ice was tilting for Boston, I’m pretty sure the turnovers told a different story.

Yeah, you can tell how freakin strong our D is going to be once they stop making so many mistakes. Between how strong our D is, and how dedicated our forwards are to back-checking, the opposing team is going to feel completely suffocated (as Lucic already seems to be experiencing) anytime they leave they leave their own zone.

Bruins and Sharks? Seriously?
They are in no way similar. Different team builds, different gameplay and completely different reputation.
I could see how they would have the same reputation up until last year.
Both have had some pretty bad playoff losses but the Bruins were vindicated last year. Washington in my opinion might be the Sharks-East because they are fellow President Trophy winners that have yet to capitalize (CWIDT?) on their regular season success and make it to the Finals.

I’m also from california, so a lot of it probably goes right over my head, but I think it’s fucking hilarious. It’s Halloween themed too!
Benn Ferriero
Glad to See Ferriero get the call up, he played great. Lot’s of hits and working very hard to get his shot. I think he deserves to stay with the big club (as I’ve said since the start of the year). I’d rotate Desi and Winchester in and out on the 4th line. I like Ferriero on the 3rd line, at least I did last game. Still waiting for Dan Boyle to get going offensively.
I went to the game
