Sharks win 3-1 behind Pavelski and a milestone night for Thornton
Joe Thornton just recently played in his 1.000th NHL game. Since he's been such a prolific scorer throughout his illustrious journey, a huge career achievement in the points department couldn't be far behind.
Thornton became just the 50th player in NHL history to notch 700 assists as a result of a two assist performance in a 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators. It goes without saying that we're watching a player who will likely be included in the Hall of Fame when he finally skates off into the sunset.
We're a far way away from that, though, as Thornton showed tonight that he remains one of the NHL's most dangerous passers. Joe Pavelski, who has six goals in seven games this season, has been the prime recipient of Thornton's feeds so far this year and chipped in two more with the captain's help tonight.
Despite Pavelski's two goal outburst, the game was a more or less uneventful affair through the first two periods. Nashville has always been a stingy team when it comes to quality chances allowed, and San Jose did their best to emulate that style. The Sharks were the first to get on the board, as Logan Couture and Martin Havlat combined for the team's first shorthanded goal of the season. The pair streaked into the Nashville zone, and after Havlat put one off the pads of Pekka Rinne, Couture made a nice move and pounced on the rebound to give the Sharks the lead. It was another great moment of chemistry between Couture and Havlat, who connected for their second tally in two games. Havlat, who himself is still coming back from injury, has three assists in his first three games with the Sharks.
The second was a scoreless affair; both teams had their chances but the Finnish goaltenders at each end held strong for their respective clubs. The aforementioned Rinne was strong as usual, and the Sharks' Antti Niemi seems to be getting better and better with each start after returning from injury.
The Sharks did give up a goal in the third, however, as Nashville's Ben Smith slid one past a sprawled out Niemi on Nashville's fourth power play. It was an unlucky goal all around; Brent Burns broke his stick, Michal Handzus gave his to Burns, and the Sharks were stuck with virtually three players to defend. Handzus did what he could in an attempt to seal the puck on the boards, but Nashville worked it free and into a scramble in the crease. After Niemi made a few key saves, Smith tied the game with some good hands.
Even though Nashville did convert on that play, their fourth power play of the evening, the Sharks killed the other three in what has been a strong stretch of penalty killing for the team. Since allowing three power play goals against Phoenix in the home opener, the Sharks have killed 15 of 18 penalties over six games. The power play, however, has hit a bit of a cold streak. It's something that all will be conscious of going forward.
Nashville didn't have the game tied long, as Pavelski would receive a pass from Thornton and come from behind the net to force the puck past Rinne to give the Sharks back the lead just 0:57 after Nashville tied it. The Predators would pull RInne soon after, but Patrick Marleau made a strong play at the blue line to break Pavelski who hit the open net dead-center.
This win was an encouraging one for San Jose; not only was it their third straight win and one that put them back above .500, but it was also an all around strong performance by all players. Niemi stopped 19 of 20 shots against, Jamie McGinn had another excellent game playing alongside Handzus, Marc-Edouard Vlasic continues to play his incredible defensive game and the Sharks pumped 16 more shots on goal than their competition despite leading most of the game.
After a troubling start to the year, the Sharks seem to be on the upswing. They'll catch their arch-rival on Friday when they visit the Detroit Red Wings, a team headed in the opposite direction lately. After starting the season hot, the Wings have been outscored 11 to 2 in their last two games.
That won't matter Friday, though, as Detroit will be ready to take on the San Jose squad that knocked them out of the playoffs two straight years. Get excited for one of the marquee games of the season later in the week. It's going to be a doozy.

Things seem to be trending the right way.
None of these wins on the trip have been sparkling from what I’ve seen (though I’ll admit, I’ve only seen highlights of Boston so far), but the pieces are seemingly starting to slot together and guys who have been lagging are picking it up.
I’m impressed that Couture essentially called his goal tonight by saying he didn’t think he had one against Nashville and he wanted it.
And gotta love Jumbo getting to 700 assists. The man is amazing.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!
He did have a goal against Nashville before this one though.

Honestly
If it happens in the playoffs then I’m on board with you, but sticking up for your teammates even if it costs you a penalty is more valuable in the long run IMHO.
I remember from the Cheechoo days till about after we got eliminated in the opening round against Anaheim, all the talk was teammates not sticking up for each other. Even if the other team scores on the PP and we lose the game (my point: in the regular season only), it’s just one game but as cliche as it sounds, teammates sticking up for each other come playoff time is priceless.

I gotta think if there was an interested ownership group it could happen
But.. they would have to renovate an old arena for NHL as a temporary stop gap, then start construction on a new arena.

Marleau actually got primary assists on both of Pavs' goals tonight
as he has on at least one of Pavelski’s other goals (specifically, the sweet pass through the legs of the d-man on the PP back in the season opener vs Phoenix). Not that there’s anything wrong with secondary assists. Congrats to Jumbo on the 700-assist milestone.
I know Patty hasn’t put any goals in the book other than the empty netter against Boston, but I think he’s been playing very well so far this season, especially since he started getting over the flu. He’s been playing hard on the boards, keeping his head up, being defensively accountable, making smart plays. Somehow he didn’t get a shot on net tonight, but the goals are bound to come sooner than later if he keeps his play up like this.

Marleau is starting to get to where the puck is
There were some nice defensive plays against him by Suter and Weber. But they are literally one of the best, if not the best pairing right now in the NHL, so them’s the breaks. If Patty every really gets his game going physically, he’s due for a monster tear. He’s still just a step off, and the puck won’t sit for him. He needs to say FU to the world, and he’ll be just fine.

He’s Patty – it’ll all average out in the end. Some games he’ll be south of the mark, some games he’ll go super hot and by the end of the year, he’ll have earned his contract.

On the right track...
So is Marleau the odd man out now that Pavelski is on the 1st line? I love this top line and I think Jumbo is loving having Pavelski there with him. I think Pavelski will definitely be scoring 30-35 goals this season, if not more.
I’m going to have to DVR the Sharks 4th straight win on Friday… duty calls at a friend’s wedding. I guess they didn’t look at the Sharks schedule before booking the venue and picking the date.

Marleau
He’s definitely NOT the odd man out… Pavs is just on a serious streak right now and playing the best hockey I’ve ever seen him play, however, he’ll hit his cold spots like all goal scoreres do, and Marleau will get on a hot streak.
Marleau’s shooting percentage is 4.2% right now which is about 10% below his career average. He’s been skating well the last few games, using his size and had the 2 primary assists on Pavs’ goals last night. The top line won’t work as well w/o him IMO.

The points on that line
Are highly incestuous. And there’s a few cases where Joe or Patty have deserved an assist for their work but the number of passes has shut them out. I’m still worried about Patty’s back check and physical presence, but his game is certainly on the upswing as he looks to be fully recovered from that flu. Clowe is the top 6 guy I’m most worried about at the moment. I feel like he’s not quite reading the game just yet, and he may need a few games to really get going.

For those who don’t know and do care: Drew is on KNBR 680 AM every Wednesday @ 3:30 PM for about 15 – 20 minutes. Great to hear Drew each week. Also, not surprised at all by the big Pavelski’s start. I thought he’d do incredibly well with Marleau and Thornton. Imo, Marleau s/b on the top line because of his speed and scoring ability, slow start and all. Glad to see the Defense is as good as advertised, fewest shots allowed. Can’t wait for Friday v Detroit. And as Drew said today on KNBR, one of the most depressing cities in the NHL. He said in his 20 years with the Sharks it’s never been sunny when they fly in, just dreary and grey. “I just don’t get it” when asked about being in Detroit.
